Busting the myths behind black skin and how to treat it with
tender love and care.
Transcript
00:00Hello everyone, I'm going in skin care and skin today.
00:08I'm Logan Tamika, I'm your founder of Housing Skin Care, and I'm so excited about this conversation.
00:14We have a lot of really great people on this panel today.
00:17First, I'll be here by the world-renowned dermatologist, Dr. Lauren Krieger.
00:23Hi y'all, thank you so much for being here. Thanks, Tamika, it's a pleasure to be on stage with you.
00:34Thanks for having us.
00:35Of course, and then next is a writer and producer of Skin Long Year Day.
00:41Hey guys, this works.
00:51And then last but not least, you have a founder and CEO of Code of Skin, New Orleans local
00:59and I'm so excited to join in here. We have so much experience on this panel.
01:13And I'm really excited to bring all of you to just hear all of our perspectives.
01:17I'm sure you did that right now.
01:19You know, from this side of this, this treatment, this information, there's just so much going on.
01:25I think it's skin care in general, but especially if you think of skin care for people who have validated skin.
01:30And so, I would like to know how you guys think within our community, with the tools and the knowledge necessary to achieve skin success.
01:39And also, if you guys want to share, what does skin success mean to you?
01:43Yeah, that is a great question. It's a tough one.
01:46First, I think you have to define what skin success means for you.
01:50And as a dermatologist, I'm going to treat the individual differently based on what their goals are for skin success.
01:56So, the way I treat someone with acne is going to be totally different than the way I treat someone with heart loss, for example.
02:03So, I have to take into account their lifestyle, their preferences, their goals.
02:07So, first, finding a dermatologist that understands that and wants to be those goals.
02:11So, second, I think we kind of underestimate sometimes just the patience and consistency that are needed in order to see the change we want to see with our skin success.
02:23So, knowing that the journey sometimes requires trying different products, trying different dermatologist staff, trying different treatment plans.
02:32And I usually tell patients it takes at least three to four months of this disease or something before you know whether or not it's going to be successful.
02:40And you also want to make sure that you don't try a million new things at once.
02:44Really take your time, see how it's working.
02:47And then third, find a team, find a team of products, a team of caregivers that will work for you.
02:54I think one of the things that is about secret is there's actually a repository of black dermatologists.
03:02So, the black derm directory, you can find a black dermatologist.
03:06There's also a skin of color society that has a ton of information for patients as well as a repository of black dermatologists as well.
03:14So, finding that team is important.
03:16To me, skin success is always my internal, kind of internal needs.
03:22During the pandemic, I travel on my fork.
03:26Before the pandemic, I had an executive member and said,
03:28you know, I'm getting patients with being a quality producer.
03:31And when I was seven, when I was older, one year, my speed started to blow.
03:37I travel around with half days.
03:39I was in my little African.
03:41I was at three airports.
03:43I had an internal fulfillment meeting with my family and being around the people that I love.
03:49I had an internal fulfillment meeting with my family and being around the people that I love.
03:55I had an internal fulfillment meeting with my family and being around the people that I love.
03:59I had an internal fulfillment meeting with my family and being around the people that I love.
04:05I had an internal fulfillment meeting with my family and being around the people that I love.
04:11I had to say, because that is just kind of straight at that point.
04:13For me, I found, I found, I found, you know,
04:18I had a learning lesson about skincare was no childhood error, right?
04:21I had everybody who could afford to go to school and use the education.
04:24You need my mom's knowledge of skin.
04:26And that's just because of my skin.
04:28Be dermatologists, you get pretty expensive.
04:31All I just like to do is buy answers, products, so do your research.
04:35Make sure you educate yourself on your skin needs and understand that not everything works
04:39for everybody.
04:40So as long as I want to consume, giving back to the community, giving them a knowledge
04:44to the need, the first thing to do is give them history knowledge.
04:47Do your research.
04:48It's just that simple.
04:49Educate yourself, you know, just knowing the story, looking at the back of something that
04:52is his own, he clears everything, and then just want to turn your head, right?
04:56So let's not maybe say what it comes about.
04:58Just educated by community, I just want people to go.
05:01There's a whole lot of free knowledge and information that you can get before you do this.
05:06Absolutely.
05:08Thank you for sharing that.
05:09And if you offer defining skin, since I think often we're kind of painted this picture with
05:15one, frisky, clear, super perfect skin, and in reality, like, acne or all the skin conditions
05:21that might not be limited to the full of the time, and so I'm understanding how they feel
05:25best and how you achieve that.
05:27So I understand sharing that.
05:28Dr. Figured, I'm going to go back to you over the city, over the prep, what we do know
05:34that there are, you know, different issues or concerns that might be unique to folks with
05:38melanin, but let's hear what some of the common issues that you see come up in your office
05:42are, how do people kind of think about approaching those, you know, preventing those, what does
05:48that look like for them to give for our community, and how do we get better at Melody?
05:51Yes, definitely.
05:52First off, melanin is amazing, from the medical perspective, in addition to being gorgeous,
05:57it has so many benefits.
05:59So we know that melanin protects us from many types of skin cancers, right, and so we're
06:03less likely to get many types of skin cancers.
06:06We also know that melanin provides an advantage in terms of aging, which is why black don't
06:12cry, so that's true.
06:13And although we could just leave it at that block upstairs, we'll keep going.
06:18So, I think one of the things about melanin, though, is it does come with its human challenges.
06:25So, when you have things like acne and the inflammation from acne or some extra, you can
06:30deal with things like post-inflammatory, hyperpigmentation, or the brown that's left behind it.
06:34And oftentimes that brown is even more bothersome than the acne itself.
06:38You can also deal with discoloration or uneven pigmentation in the face, a common condition
06:45is melasma that I see as well.
06:47Hair loss is a big thing that I treat in my office, and it's not to be minimized.
06:54Hair is brown, right, so it's so important to address hair loss and cultural sensitivity.
07:00For the men in the audience, you can get things like razor bumps, which is also going to do
07:06a lot of sparring, and I'm also going to get bumps in the back of the neck.
07:09So, although there are so many advantages to melanin, you definitely have to, you know,
07:14consider that there are some eating challenges that we have to pick up as well.
07:17I think early diagnosis and early treatment is key.
07:21It's so much easier when you establish with someone and you, you know, you come in with what
07:27products you've already tried, what's worked, what hasn't worked, and then you can develop
07:33treatment, which I think I've mentioned before you've reached a point where the, where the
07:36most inflammatory hyperpigmentation is so devastating, or the hair loss is irreversible.
07:41So, early diagnosis is really key.
07:43Yeah, and then just over on this topic, like, will these specific concerns, I think, that
07:48are, like, very relevant, what's relevant.
07:50And, um, when you think of, like, a home care versus, you know, office care, like, those
07:54that look like, you know, people really start, like, taking advantage of what they have on
07:59shelf or, you know, or one of their resources and things like that before they come to the
08:03office and really keep that work going.
08:05Yeah, and I think it's really a nice marriage, so you should have both, you should have components
08:09of both.
08:10Um, so I think a lot of times, by the time, I'm seeing someone, they've tried over-the-counter
08:14things, and they may not have worked, but I am recommending over-the-counter products,
08:19um, on a daily basis.
08:22And, of course, I make recommendations sometimes, they don't always work for the patient, but
08:25we'll try something else, um, such as looking for product ingredients, for example, when
08:30you're looking for things that help fight hyperpigmentation, you want to look for niacinamide,
08:35when you want anti-aging, you want, uh, tinted sunscreen for hyperpigmentation, when you're
08:41looking for something to help with acne, you're looking for red noise, um, you're also looking
08:46for AHA, BHA, glyphosate, and I know some of your products have those in there as well.
08:52Um, so looking for those ingredients, and, you know, that's really hard to know, as, as
08:56Brittany mentioned, you empower yourself with the resources that are online, what products
09:00help with what, and then when you need help, we're, we're here.
09:04Thank you so much.
09:05It's a highly vulnerable, and a breakout brand, uh, I guess you're going to open forever.
09:09Um, but also tears open, um, on, so your fill isn't, um, skin whitening, you know, following
09:17this journey of this woman, going through the process of trying to make herself lighter
09:21skin, and so, um, I really want to hear about that experience, too, and really, how can we
09:27continue to talk about that narrative of, you know, lighter skin, and being, uh, the core
09:32of a bunch of a lot of marketing and a lot of brands, and, and really addressing, you know,
09:36a lot of marketing and a lot of marketing and a lot of marketing and a lot of marketing,
09:41um, I mean, it's really tough to see, um, you know, balance towards the arts and people
09:45who move up over in a bunch of people to pursue, um, which in Africa, you know, the part where
09:51you are in this middle field, and somehow people have convinced that this is true, and, you know,
09:58it's just so much that we should be preaching with that, you know what I'm seeing, ourself
10:02is right now, and we're in the narrative of our writing, and the fact is, right, which
10:07one of the issues are amazing, and we all have made it, but some of us have a little bit
10:11more, more, more to the same, right?
10:13It's not a mess, isn't it?
10:14And so, we just have so much money, I can only support the same message that I'm less than
10:18people.
10:19Yes, you know, you've got to say, you need it, and, you know, these are just things that we have
10:25to do, and we should have to lower ourselves, maybe, to the future, and then, and so I'm
10:29having a few things that I've been talking about, so you want to just make some of these
10:33things that we should have to change in our writing now, because it worked, right?
10:37We can, like, we can, like, we can, like, we can, like, we can, like, we can, like, we can,
10:39like, we can, like, we can, like, we can, like, we can, like, we can, like, we can, like,
10:42so the first thing is, like, we can start calling out these brands, like, that you're
10:47going to convert it to a certain spectrum of color.
10:50Pretty hot, is anybody going to pretty little bit of this, right?
10:53Let's say, can you guys go, right?
10:56So keep all of them models, and even as far as you know, you can have a certain shape.
11:00It's all of them.
11:01There's a book, and there's one, as it spreads that all of us, all of them eventually will
11:05show a certain spectrum of meaning, and they need to disempower, right?
11:09These enemies will really have to be in touch with the diversity of tourist children, right?
11:14If you want us to get to our new commercials, or the, uh, Toys R Us, or the Nails, or Toys R Us,
11:19or the St. R Us, or the St. R Us, or the St. R Us, or the St. R Us.
11:21So, a big kid with a big board that always appears to be a kid, which starts calling out
11:26his brands to his little boy, and then comes with us, and you have to stop seeing, and you
11:32get to the back of the sun, right?
11:34Or, either K-4 Darksaker, right?
11:37That has been the most important part that it comes from us, and I'm actually K-4 Darksaker.
11:43Or, what could they have done, let's see, um, everything that we have to do is, you know,
11:49to guys to watch my videos, um, what we've been supposed to say, I would have to do that
11:53because I've just continued the conversation around scapegoat, scapegoat, scapegoat, and
11:57being able to fault people for disease, right?
12:00Because they're trying to solve experiences, and they're actually going to break years
12:05and years.
12:05So, you can see all your vision is going on stage, you know, if you're not even trying
12:09to find out the change and shift to something else, and say, well, you're still building,
12:14because you can have your summer season, right?
12:17So, you have heard how the military was going to summer, and a day, a bunch of time, right?
12:21You don't like it, because this is a bunch of time.
12:23You can also appreciate this, and it's going to be a bunch of things, right?
12:26Even in the summertime.
12:27So, I hope you guys continue to have this conversation, please.
12:31If anybody here are going to take this meeting to you, I don't want to take it out for an
12:35island, which is unfortunately because of my family members saying that I was encouraged
12:39to do it, and I started to say I wanted to sit here because I thought I was sick and
12:44apparently, I wasn't as good as I could be, but I wasn't sure as fair as they wanted me to
12:49be, so this is a serious problem, but again, they don't fault people for disease.
12:53I just want to shake the narrative, right?
12:55I just want to kind of tap on that, so one of the things that I think is interesting is
13:00to actually recognize it and see what possibility for it for ourselves, for ourselves.
13:04So, I don't want to be any better off of that because I just want us to understand and recognize
13:09what my role is, what my role means, right?
13:12I think a lot of times, especially in the same age, the world's largest and sourced
13:17is African American women.
13:19We are what they target.
13:21So, once they do a surprise, it's like they're limiting us in these things and just get us
13:28in and get the most dollars back in the whole nine.
13:30I want you to recognize that, too.
13:32While we want to see our people and we want to see us up there, we want to be able to identify
13:36what the people that's in front of us.
13:38at this point, where we are now, is a marketing strategy.
13:42So, make sure that, of course, as she said, we don't want to see us.
13:45We want to be recognized.
13:47We want to identify ourselves with the way the world is shifting now and everything is
13:52like, oh, we've got to be cautious and we've got to be aware that they've got to start using us.
13:57They've got to start using the ones that are like her, like me, to advertise us, right?
14:01Don't fall off of like me.
14:03Fall off of like home.
14:04Right.
14:05No, no, no, no.
14:06No, no, no.
14:07No, no, no.
14:08No, no, no.
14:09No, no, no.
14:10No, no, no.
14:11Now this is a good point.
14:12A whole size, I think, you know, is what you're saying.
14:13It's always so interesting how the beauty industry is in life.
14:16Something that's incredibly horrible feels too cool.
14:20I've always read that.
14:22It's like 85% of the whole different energy and souring bring out, but somehow they may just
14:28feel like, no, you're wrong and you're dirty, but it's like, like, the people who know
14:32children are the minority.
14:33Like, how are we having these conversations?
14:35And, you know, the same thing.
14:36We're thinking about how are you kind of sharing something that's a normal representation
14:40and, like, recently in that narrative and making sure that we're at the forefront, which
14:45the four brands represent us and represent both the people and, and, you know, folks that,
14:50you know, have different conditions or more.
14:53We're thinking about how are we going to do something that we need.
14:55Um, this is what we want to make.
14:57You know, like, I see this, right?
14:59We are empowered.
15:01You know, just let me just bring it to the black hole, right?
15:05Let me let people who are who this is going to be encouraged to have to take advantage
15:09to try to shift disparities.
15:11If one of these areas that continue to do is want to continue to create division.
15:15We know that the nation will be going to be a form of a future.
15:19One time with Americans, a different isn't it?
15:22And, of course, we're going to be a good idea of certain things that we need to do in targeted
15:27things.
15:28We have to be very careful and sincerely pay attention to the decision.
15:33We can be answering the issues that we need to do with our own issues.
15:36We know that we do so, so we need to be a good way.
15:40So, other people don't have to prepare to do this.
15:42What is the separation?
15:43What is the separation?
15:44Right here.
15:46Discipleation.
15:47Right here.
15:48Discipleation.
15:49We're just trying to change that.
15:50But, as you have to, and I love to do this, I love to do this.
15:54And I love to do this, because I love to do this as well.
15:56I love it.
15:57I love it.
15:58We love it.
15:59Well, we're the United States.
16:00You and your God and your friend.
16:02So I think that in a lot of ways, you know, a lot of stand-care for those folks,
16:07and especially, you know, hard to manage it to be one product, a little bit of a treatment.
16:12I've learned a lot, so let me share this now, but really there's a lot of prevention in it because
16:16there's a lot of sort of routine that needs to be made within skin care, and then the results
16:21that we want to really create that healthy relationship with our skin, and frankly, it
16:25just loves the skin in itself.
16:27So I'd love to hear about how that's impacted your product, how you build your brand, and
16:30really what that means to you for people to build an entire routine, build some sort of
16:35consistency instead of just one product, right?
16:37I mean, like I said earlier, everyone can actually force both with dermatologists, and I've always
16:42identified you for making sure that you utilize all your resources before you go spending money,
16:47you know, just crazy, right?
16:50One of the things I do want to get Dr. Warren on is that you want to make sure that either
16:55when you visit a dermatologist, it shows someone that you can identify with, someone who knows
17:00your skin, and not just the skin, because that's the best you told me everything.
17:05So when it comes to a kind of eventual skincare routine, it's extremely important, especially
17:11for those who can afford to visit a dermatologist every week or twice a week or even a month.
17:16So it's me, when it came to me building my brand and building my company, I focus more on,
17:23I know a lot of people, which is a great job, this is this thing, I know a lot of people feel
17:26that, you know what, I need to create, I need to add another product, I need to add another
17:29product, you guys, a better product, you guys, a better product, that's not good from a business
17:33standpoint, right?
17:34For me, I've started my business with four products and have managed to make $10 million
17:40sale on four products, right?
17:43So you have to, you have to, like you're saying, it's not necessarily about, it's not necessarily
17:49about the continuing, yes, thank you, the quantity, right?
17:55It's about the quality.
17:56I started my business in 2019, just started back down in 2019, so free family and reevaluate
18:01and recreate and relaunch.
18:03And in that time frame, I put a lot of money, time, and attention into product formulation,
18:09because what I was told before wasn't doing anything, so I really got heavy attention,
18:13but to give results to my people, and actually the people interested.
18:17I said, this works, this product works.
18:20And when I relaunched the tweets, I asked you how to use the product, and it's pretty cool.
18:24You know, I'm just, I'm just, I'm just, I'm just, I'm just, I'm just not going to share
18:29the whole idea.
18:29Thank you so much.
18:31But when I re-launched, that became my full point.
18:34I needed to actually be able to reduce the brand, reduce the product, reduce something
18:39that actually works.
18:41And forget the numbers.
18:42Forget the numbers.
18:43Because there are a lot of people out there who already see that, right?
18:47So it's extremely important to make sure you have an healthy relationship with you, which
18:51And the way you can find that is finding the logs and guarantee that it works for you.
18:56I'm going to say there's any cause it works for you.
18:59So, don't buy it. I'm just saying you have to find what works for you,
19:04what identify what you're saying, because what works for you may not work for you.
19:07And you can't have to find that. Like, where are you?
19:09You're going to scan the emails.
19:11You know, but just focus on that and educate yourself
19:14and make sure that you do the proper research to find what helps.
19:20Amazing, amazing.
19:23Well, you've got a little round of round question as we close.
19:26What is one skin you'd like to keep on to on this stage in a video?
19:31Will you start with Dr. Gregory?
19:34Yeah, I mean, when you see the words in my head in my mouth,
19:37this is what my mind is going to be.
19:39It's not one size fits all.
19:41It is not one size fits all.
19:43So, skin is amazing. It's beautiful.
19:46It is your self-confidence, though, is what you present to the world.
19:49So, it means a lot.
19:51And this panel is just definitely full of women who understand that.
19:57So, I'm really excited to feel especially a part of it.
20:00But, you know, I think you have to say you feel empowered in selecting your products, in selecting your dermatologists.
20:09And I just want everyone to leave with that sense of empowerment today.
20:14So, I have two things that I'd like to do.
20:18One, obviously, while you're just going to insert the growth method.
20:22I don't know.
20:23Okay, I don't know what to do.
20:24I'd like to do.
20:25One is not necessarily right.
20:26Yes.
20:27Okay.
20:28The other one is water.
20:29Water.
20:30My job.
20:31When people say you take water, your skin is going to be better.
20:33I don't like water.
20:34I'm very drinking.
20:35I just like having to sniff myself with water.
20:37But, I've had to wish you to turn it.
20:39It nourishes you.
20:40My business is really important.
20:41Your skin needs to do.
20:43To have a seat right.
20:44To have a seat right.
20:45To have a seat right.
20:46To have a seat right.
20:47To have a seat right.
20:48To have a seat right.
20:49To have a seat right.
20:50To have a seat right.
20:51To have a seat right.
20:52To have a seat right.
20:53To have a seat right.
20:54To have a seat right.
20:56To have a seat right.
20:57To have a seat right.
20:58To have a seat right.
20:59To have a seat right.
21:00To have a seat right.
21:01My good.
21:02Okay.
21:03Well, for example, I don't think I'm going to get this.
21:05There's another thing I'm going to get a seat right.
21:07One, are you going to wash่aw?
21:09It's all you need.
21:11No.
21:12You're going to really entirely talk with my needs of my needs and sales.
21:16That's very interesting.
21:17You need to find a suitable cluster to actually get rid of the eggs and stir and grinds, right?
21:31So that's what I wanted to add to that.
21:33That is not true if you're not to have much of the water in a towel.
21:38It'll take you back to the other end of the water again.
21:40And then the second one, I'm going to want to get, you know, a little nervous.
21:43All right, two days, do not need that two days.
21:48I can't get rid of the blemishes, okay?
21:50I just had it in the skin, and when I drive into the editing, I still want to learn how I'm trying to dry my skin out.
21:59My sickness is a mess.
22:01I'll be walking around here with two days, basically a mess burning.
22:04They've got the fact that two days will, what is it, I don't know, I can't do it.
22:13There's many games on it in here.
22:15I'm just saying, oh, it's wearing your face, and it just kind of did it.
22:18I just want to kill your face, because I know my people.
22:21You didn't get it?
22:22I know I didn't get it.
22:23But that is not true.
22:24So please, it's not a good one of the shrivels for a illness this winter.
22:29You know, something on the towels, it's not used to be.
22:32You know, and that brought me back, and I think another myth I'm going to throw here, too, is that if you have oily skin, you should not be stripping your skin dry.
22:42You should not be avoiding moisture, hydration, or oils.
22:45You're not taking hydrating your skin, it's going to make it more oily.
22:48It'll probably bring out more.
22:50So you brought me back to the end of the day, so I'll watch my face, and it was tragic.
22:54When I say two holy grails, two dermatologics, holy grails, and two products, you should not skip in your vegetables.
23:02One, sunscreen, and if you have any issues with pigmentation, the sunscreen should be a tinted sunscreen.
23:10It's a tanning component called ferrous oxide, or titanium dioxide.
23:15That's one.
23:16And two, there's P for anti-aging, and it's a retinoid.
23:21It's a retinoid, it's a secret to anti-aging, so those are the holy grails, which, by the way, all of us get the whole forms and ingredients, so for the chocolate, it's going to be cold.
23:35There we go.
23:35And don't see that range.
23:37I hope everybody's ready.
23:39Well, listen, thank you.
23:41Thank you all for joining the stage.
23:43Thank you for having me up here.
23:45It's a great conversation.
23:46I listened to her past, and so we got into here.
23:48We're trying to see it relevant.
23:50And just hope you have ourselves, see yourselves represented.
23:53I appreciate all of y'all.
23:54I hope all of y'all enjoyed this conversation.
23:56You got something out of it.
23:58I think I'll be great.
23:58Rest your lessons fast.
24:00You got something out of it.
24:06You got something out of it.
24:08I saw something out of it.
24:10This way I would have been able to get to it.
24:11You got something out of it.
24:12Sometimes when I went up, they got something out of it.
24:13What year I had happen, I was going to give out a couple of porcissimo side, as well.
24:14I think that I had something out of it.
24:14You got something out of it.
24:15Let's been playing.
24:17I together I checked.
24:18I put an idea.
24:20You got something out of it.
24:22That's a great conversation.
24:22I left the pod before yesterday.
24:25I got something out of it,
24:26I did believe this.
