21:25My brother don't need to let me go out past 11.
21:27She'll be crying about that .
21:28And if I go out, I'd be locked up.
21:29So where were you at before 11?
21:31I stay home.
21:33So if somebody said they saw you,
21:35they would be totally incorrect.
21:37Somebody said they saw me wearing the ball?
21:39No .
21:41Somebody said they saw me .
21:43Man, hella wrong.
21:45Hella wrong.
21:46For sure, 100%.
21:47Not a lot of people that look like you.
21:49Man, I'm 6'5".
21:50That's true.
21:50Exactly, bro, I'm 6'5".
21:52Well, if you see me as a , bro,
21:53you're gonna notice me.
21:55I don't need it.
21:57Kamani tells me his name.
21:59He gives me a phone number for him,
22:01which is not the phone number that I already have for him.
22:05I have him ID'd out of a photo lineup.
22:08That looks like the draw of him.
22:10The dark-skinned one that had to ski maps up.
22:13So he's the alleged perpetrator.
22:17I'm not gonna sit there and beg him for information.
22:21You know him?
22:22Who?
22:22Grab him.
22:24Ray?
22:25Who are my brothers?
22:26Hello, brothers?
22:27Hello, brothers.
22:28Gotcha.
22:29Well, uh, we'll see how it goes for you.
22:31So the person that was in the same apartment as Kamani, his name is Gregory Jones.
22:38Me and Deesburg, we asked him the same questions that we asked Kamani.
22:44Where were you at Saturday night?
22:45Saturday night?
22:46Saturday night.
22:47Inside?
22:48He was inside.
22:49He was inside.
22:50He was inside.
22:51He was outside.
22:52He was outside.
22:53He was outside.
22:54He was outside.
22:55He was outside.
22:56He was outside.
22:57So the person that was in the same apartment as Kamani, his name is Gregory Jones.
22:59He was outside.
23:00He's outside.
23:01He was outside.
23:02He was outside.
23:03He was outside.
23:04that we asked Kamani.
23:05Where were you at Saturday night?
23:08Saturday night.
23:11Inside.
23:13It was inside.
23:13My grandmother.
23:15Cool.
23:16Gregory has given us a similar story
23:18that Kamani told us.
23:20Gregory states that he was home
23:22at the time of the murder
23:22because his grandmother gives him
23:24a curfew of 11 o'clock.
23:26We investigated the homicide
23:27that happened on Saturday.
23:29I don't be as honest as I can with you.
23:31And I'm asking you the question
23:32where you were,
23:32but I need you to be
23:33100% sure about
23:34what you tell me next.
23:36So don't get caught up
23:36in some that you may not
23:38want to be a part of.
23:39Okay?
23:40So I want to give you
23:40another opportunity
23:41to explain about Saturday night.
23:44Saturday night?
23:45Inside?
23:46You could?
23:47My grandmother?
23:48Mm-hmm.
23:49You have any flag on?
23:51You don't have a gun?
23:53Okay.
23:54We're not going to find
23:55any guns in your house.
23:58Gregory Jones is held
24:00in the custody
24:00of the sheriff's office
24:01pending the results
24:03of the search warrant.
24:10We have in the closet
24:12on the top shelf
24:13in a, like, purse,
24:14two guns,
24:15one with an extended magazine,
24:1740 caliber,
24:19and then a 9mm.
24:20Glocks.
24:21That's what we have on scene.
24:23And then two magazines upstairs.
24:26During the search,
24:27unfortunately,
24:27we didn't find any cell phones,
24:29but it's a very exciting find.
24:32Two guns that match
24:33the crime scene
24:34in the house.
24:36So now,
24:37I'm looking more
24:38at Gregory
24:38as potentially
24:40being a co-perpetrator.
24:42Today,
24:43we were expecting
24:43to find Kamani Johnson,
24:45but we were not expecting
24:46to find Gregory Jones
24:48or anybody else
24:49that matched
24:49the descriptions
24:50given by the surviving witness.
24:52The other dude
24:53that opened the car on me,
24:55he was red.
24:56He had a bush.
24:58Can you talk to JP Deputy?
25:00I asked him to hold Gregory
25:02until we got done here
25:03to see what we got.
25:04Okay, well,
25:05go to the bureau,
25:07call NCIC,
25:08find out if the guns
25:09are stolen.
25:09Okay, good.
25:10Call an NCIC
25:16when we find guns
25:17is part of our procedure.
25:19We have to know
25:19if they're stolen
25:20or if they're not.
25:21Got two guns.
25:23Both calibers match
25:24the crime scene.
25:27But right now,
25:28I don't have much
25:29to charge Gregory Jones with,
25:31so running these guns
25:32to see if they're stolen
25:33can help me
25:34lock him down
25:35so that I can
25:36further investigate
25:37Gregory Jones
25:38as a potential suspect
25:39in this case.
25:40That way we can
25:42charge him,
25:43hopefully while he's
25:44still in jail
25:44and we don't have
25:45to go look for him again.
25:49Hey, man.
25:51Let me ask you,
25:51so we found two guns
25:52in the house.
25:53Are those y'all
25:53or who they belong to?
25:57Huh?
25:59You don't have no gun?
26:09Right.
26:10One of the guns
26:12did come back stolen,
26:14so Gregory's getting
26:15booked on that,
26:17so he'll be in jail
26:17for a couple days.
26:27From what I have so far,
26:30Kamani is identified
26:31as the driver
26:32of the perpetrator's vehicle.
26:34There was two other perpetrators.
26:38Gregory matches
26:39the general description
26:41of the second perpetrator.
26:43He's lighter skinned.
26:45He has a bushy style haircut,
26:46but it's not enough
26:49to arrest him for murder.
26:51So what are we doing today?
27:08We're going to
27:09Malcolm's mom's house.
27:13So we arrested Kamani
27:14last Thursday.
27:16Right.
27:16So I'm just going to go
27:17give her an update,
27:19let her know
27:19that he's in jail
27:20and that he was arrested
27:21with somebody else.
27:23And we're working
27:24on Gregory Jones
27:25as a potential suspect.
27:27Yeah, it'll be nice
27:28telling her, of course,
27:29that we got one of the guys,
27:30but we still got
27:31some more work to do
27:31to find out
27:33who he's other one more.
27:34Hopefully that'll give her
27:35a little bit of closure.
27:36Yeah.
27:43How you doing?
27:45Mind if we step inside?
27:49Meeting in person
27:50rather than simply calling
27:51them on the phone
27:52shows the family
27:54that I care about
27:55this investigation
27:56and Malcolm.
27:58We want to bring them
27:59good news
28:00that we have made an arrest
28:01and that we're continuing
28:03to thoroughly investigate
28:05the other two perpetrators.
28:08Getting justice
28:09for Malcolm Solomon
28:10is important
28:11because this can be
28:14anybody's tragic ending.
28:23How were I?
28:24Well, that went pretty well.
28:25Yeah.
28:26She's been pretty calm
28:27the entire time.
28:28They had a lot of questions
28:30that I know you couldn't answer.
28:31Yeah.
28:32Unfortunately.
28:33You know, families usually do
28:34and unfortunately
28:34this early in the investigation
28:36you really just can't
28:38tell them a lot.
28:39Like, I can tell you
28:40his name
28:40because he's in jail.
28:42You know, the other people
28:43that I'm looking at
28:44I don't want to put them
28:45out there just yet.
28:46Right.
28:46So, but I think
28:50she took it pretty well.
28:51Mm-hmm.
28:52As well as she could
28:53I guess.
28:55You know.
28:56But I'm glad I was able
28:57to at least give him
28:57that initial closure
28:59that somebody's been arrested
29:00and that we're still
29:03working on it.
29:04Yeah.
29:06The last couple of days
29:07Gregory Jones
29:08has been in custody
29:08for possession
29:09of a stolen firearm.
29:10But we need more probable cause
29:12to charge him
29:12for Malcolm's murder.
29:13I mean, right now
29:14the clock is ticking
29:15for Deesburg.
29:16Any day now Gregory
29:17could be released
29:18or bailed out of jail.
29:45I finally got the
29:51ballistics comparison back
29:53so that's a big win.
29:57I compiled the lineup
29:58to show the surviving witness
30:00to identify another suspect
30:03at the crime scene.
30:05So we're headed
30:06to the 4th District Station
30:07to see who she picked.
30:09Gregory Jones.
30:39What did number two do
30:40was the date of the incident?
30:42The police saw
30:43from this phone
30:43and I was pulling
30:44the car door open.
30:46Is it a driver
30:47or passenger door?
30:47No, the passenger
30:48was signed.
30:49Nothing.
30:51He said that he was
30:52pulling on the door
30:53hand of the car.
30:55The passenger door.
30:57Good.
30:59With the identification process
31:01of Gregory Jones
31:03being successful
31:04and the ballistic match
31:06of the guns
31:07that were found
31:08in the house
31:08they were both living in
31:09puts me over the top
31:11with probable cause
31:12to be able to charge
31:13Gregory Jones
31:14with the homicide.
31:18Yo.
31:19Yeah, you need help
31:20with the vote?
31:21Uh-uh.
31:21No, I'm just picking it up.
31:24She picked out?
31:25Oh, yeah.
31:26Actually, she did.
31:27Wow.
31:29So,
31:30you picked Gregory out
31:31and said that he was
31:33the one that opened
31:34the passenger side door.
31:35That's pretty good, right?
31:37Well, I'm about to head
31:38back to headquarters
31:38and type up this arrest warrant,
31:40so...
31:41All right, bro.
31:44I'm hoping that Gregory Jones
31:45is still in jail.
31:46Thank you so much.
31:47You're welcome.
31:48So that I can go charge him
31:49with the homicide
31:50without having to track him down
31:52and arrest him again.
31:53All right, let's go type
31:54this arrest warrant.
31:56Got the warrant typed up.
32:23I should check
32:24if he's still in there.
32:24Jefferson Parish Jail.
32:31Now that I have
32:32the arrest warrant in hand,
32:33I want to see
32:33if Gregory Jones
32:34is still in jail
32:35for the gun arrest
32:37by Jefferson Parish.
32:39Search.
32:39He is not in there.
32:41So, yeah,
32:41so he's bonded out
32:42on his stolen gun charge.
32:46It's frustrating
32:47that he's not in jail anymore,
32:49but the arrest warrant
32:50is never going to go away,
32:51so he'll get picked up eventually.
32:54The marshals are going to find you
32:55pretty much wherever you go.
32:57Here we go.
32:58I'll send this warrant off
32:59to Vow's
33:00to go look for him again.
33:02Once he's in custody,
33:04it'll be another clearance
33:05for this case.
33:07And then I'll have to work
33:09on the third perpetrator,
33:11see what I can find out on him.
33:13Oh, my God.
33:43I'm definitely intrigued about why he has the plate from the perpetrator vehicle, why
33:57it's on a different car.
33:58So hopefully he can explain that or he's going to have some more serious questions to answer.
34:04He might be the third suspect.
34:13I usually ask how you're doing, but I know it's kind of a rough morning for you.
34:19So my name is Detective Deesbury, this is Detective Jefferson.
34:23I'm interested in your car that you have right now, where you got it from, who you got
34:29it from, and pretty much everything like that.
34:32I bought it last Tuesday.
34:34Okay.
34:35Where'd you buy it from?
34:37A homeboy of mine in West Wego, outside of my friend.
34:42Was the plate on the call anymore?
34:44No.
34:45Where did you get the plate from?
34:47So I worked at a .
34:48I was waiting on the template, and I just got a plate from the junkyard.
34:55And just in between get my template, because I didn't want to get pulled over.
34:59That's what happened.
35:00Okay.
35:01What are you talking about?
35:02It's like a bin that y'all just threw old stuff in?
35:04We just threw, we just threw, yeah, we just threw all our junky.
35:06It's aluminum.
35:07So we just threw it.
35:08And you just went to the opinion?
35:09I just went from the, you know, a plate.
35:11Okay.
35:12And you just put it on the fire until, like I said, my bottle, the plate came.
35:15So no telling when that plate came in?
35:17Right, there's no telling.
35:18I was just using it as a stopgap, man, between getting, I didn't think it was going to be
35:22all this.
35:23He doesn't really know what's going on.
35:24He seems very nervous.
35:26I pretty much explained to him where the plate is from.
35:29He doesn't know anything about the homicide, and he just explained how he came into possession
35:33of the plate.
35:34I don't know.
35:35Are you going to take your cuts off?
35:37I'm going to have you sit here.
35:38I'm going to have our crime lab techs, like the CSI people.
35:43We're going to come and take your car, and we're going to take that plate off.
35:48And then after that, you'll be good to go, okay?
35:51We had pretty bad luck with the plate you picked.
35:57The plate on this car came off of a homicide vehicle.
36:00I'm not worried about the car itself.
36:02I just want to take the plate off, photograph the plate on the car, and then fingerprint
36:07the plate after you take it off.
36:09Okay, sounds good.
36:12License plates are pretty conductive to lifting fingerprints off of them, because they're
36:18a smooth surface.
36:19They're not permeable.
36:20So I'm hoping that if the plate was taken off of the perpetrator vehicle by the suspects,
36:26maybe their fingerprints will still be on the license plate somewhere.
36:30We got one right there.
36:31Okay.
36:32One right there.
36:33We got some right here in the middle.
36:47905 for prints?
36:48Yes.
36:49Six?
36:50Yes.
36:51Two on the front, four on the back.
36:53So this dude, he works at the scrap yard.
36:55He was like, man, I'm just going to grab this plate that's in the box, put it on my car
37:00so I don't get pulled over between then and now.
37:02What's the odds of grabbing that plate?
37:04I was like, bro, you grabbed the worst possible plate you could have grabbed out of that.
37:07Oh my God.
37:08So out of all of the plates in the box, he grabs the one that's tied to a murder.
37:12I don't think he's going to be one of my perpetrators.
37:25He was pretty straightforward about where he got the plate from.
37:28That plate could have come in off the street from any of the dozens of local scrappers
37:34that go around and just pick up metal and trash and bring it to these scrap yards.
37:40Now I'm just still looking for this car and see if we can find Gregory Jones.
37:47The arrest warrant is a paper document.
37:50It goes into a nationwide database.
37:52So no matter where you're at in the country, if a police officer stops you and runs your name,
37:58they're going to see that you're wanted for murder.
38:01They'll find him.
38:02Cannot run the paper.
38:17J.D.
38:32What's up, dude?
38:33Wainathan.
38:34See you over there.
38:35All right.
38:36What's going on, buddy?
38:37So they finally found Gregory Jones.
38:40Oh.
38:41The marshals picked him up in the east.
38:43They were having trouble finding him.
38:45They couldn't pin him down close enough to hit a house.
38:48How the arrest went?
38:49Anything crazy?
38:50No.
38:51The marshals pretty much just said they rolled up on the house and he was outside.
38:54They saw him go inside, so they surrounded the house, called him out.
38:58But he came out unarmed, hooked him up, and took him to jail.
39:02Good decision.
39:03Yeah.
39:04Kamani and Gregory's cell phone records both came back and put him on the scene,
39:09traveling from the house to the scene, and then back to where they laid up that night.
39:14Oh, they done.
39:15It's over.
39:16So we have the guns, phone records, putting them on scene, the car right by their house.
39:21Like, we got everything.
39:22Didn't you get, like, a license plate off the car?
39:25Yeah, the plate was on somebody else's car that worked at a junkyard.
39:29We took the plate and fingerprinted it, but none of the fingerprints are suitable.
39:33But that doesn't hinder my investigation.
39:37Any updates on the third suspect?
39:39Not really.
39:40You got the two you need right now?
39:42Yeah, for sure.
39:43With that being said, how do you think Malcolm's family gonna react to it?
39:47I think they're gonna be relieved, because four or five months I've been telling them that we've been looking for this dude,
39:52and we finally got Gregory in jail.
39:55You know, he's not running around anymore.
39:57The marshals are relentless.
39:58He'll find you.
39:59Congrats.
40:00Thanks, bro.
40:01Ralph.
40:02Thanks, Bruh.
40:15Thanks, Bruh.
40:20Thank you all for being here today.
40:48Today, we gather not only in remembrance, but in resilience.
40:53We honor survivors, their stories and the voices that have emerged through the pain,
40:58demanding healing and justice.
41:00We are here to hold space for those of you who've lost, uplift those who are still healing
41:05and stand united in our commitment to justice for all.
41:09Please now welcome Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hudson.
41:14Good evening, everyone.
41:16I look at these beautiful pictures, these beautiful faces, your brothers, your sisters,
41:23your children.
41:24You know, I just can't think of any deeper pain than the loss of a child.
41:30I think we owe it to this community.
41:32We owe it to you to take it further and try to prevent this from happening in the future.
41:38And we want your help to be able to do that.
41:40We do not want this circle to grow and grow and grow.
41:44Chief Gurnan.
41:45Thank you so much, Sheriff.
41:47I really do appreciate all of you coming out here.
41:49I think that it's important that as those who have experienced pain and heartbreak move
41:55towards a sense of healing, you know that you're not doing this alone.
41:59My commitment to you on the part of the New Orleans Police Department is that we pledge
42:04to you our support.
42:05When you need that love, when you need that support, when you need those resources, please
42:09those resources, please reach out to us.
42:13We stand here today with all of those families that have experienced this pain and trauma
42:18as you remember and find solace in the thoughts of your loved ones being in a better place.
42:29As a homicide detective, you're the voice for the victim, essentially.
42:33You have to get the answers for the family to have closure.
42:40This was a difficult case to work.
42:42Malcolm was totally innocent.
42:44Just wrong place, wrong time.
42:46And it's not just important for the NOPD, it's important for everyone in the city for us
42:51to solve these crimes and the people that are responsible are going to face the consequences.
42:56I definitely think I've gotten justice for Malcolm Solomon.
