00:139-1-1, where's your emergency?
00:16In Beachwood, Ohio.
00:18What's going on there?
00:20I just got home from vacation with my family.
00:23And I didn't have a key to come in the house.
00:26And I see that my husband's cars are here.
00:29I was knocking on the door trying to get in.
00:36Have you been in the house yet?
00:38I can't get in, no, sir.
00:40Okay, so you think your husband's in the house?
00:48I'm assuming that he is because we have three cars, all three cars in here.
00:54I've been 1239.
01:01Okay, I'm going to start the ambulance and the police over to your address, all right?
01:19Hi.
01:20What's going on?
01:21Hey, she came home from vacation and can't get in.
01:24Her husband's on the door.
01:26It looks like some bullet holes or some kind of holes in the back window.
01:28Okay.
01:29Just like, you know, broken glass and stuff.
01:30Ma'am, where did you go?
01:32Well, I went to London.
01:34My husband and I were supposed to go to London with my sister and brother and mother at all
01:39the studies.
01:39So my husband got in and we flew to Newark.
01:43And he got sick.
01:45He's sick.
01:46And then...
01:46What kind of sick did he get?
01:48Brady.
01:49The head.
01:51Oh, like a migraine?
01:52Yeah.
01:52Okay.
01:53And then he stayed at his daughter's for a couple of days.
01:58And I've been texting him and calling him for the last couple of days and nothing, nothing.
02:03Okay.
02:04And then I dropped off my sister and brother-in-law.
02:08When was the last time you talked to him?
02:10A couple days ago?
02:13Okay.
02:14I don't know.
02:15I don't know if it's both holes.
02:16They're just round holes.
02:17Okay.
02:17Like broken glass in the backyard.
02:19In the back of the house.
02:19Yeah, I can go this way.
02:20Okay.
02:21What do you mean that you can't get in, though?
02:23Do you not have a key?
02:24I don't have a key.
02:25No, because he took the key with him and the smartphone.
02:30Okay.
02:31337, I have two plates.
02:33Is this front one his car?
02:35They're all his car, yeah.
02:36Okay.
02:42Does he have any mental health history that you know?
02:45Has he ever tried to commit suicide before?
02:48No?
02:48Okay.
02:49No.
02:51Okay.
02:52His brother lives two streets away.
02:55Okay.
02:55Stay early.
02:57Have you tried to call his brother to see if he's there?
02:59Would he walk over there?
03:01They don't talk.
03:02Okay.
03:04Dogs are from the back of the house.
03:05Do you see if you walk around on your side?
03:064-9-2-1-0.
03:08That's the bad way.
03:09I can't.
03:15I'm below that window?
03:18No.
03:23I'm going to get you to the window.
03:27What do we have?
03:29We don't know yet, Jack.
03:34Do they look like bullet holes, Bri?
03:36Could be.
03:37I don't know.
03:39Do you see how the hole is high up in the screen?
03:43Do you see the window?
03:45No.
03:47Do you see what I'm saying, Joe?
03:50All this hole in the screen is higher.
03:52Mm-hmm.
03:53Stay up there.
03:56All right.
03:56Let's figure out where we're going to get in here.
03:58I don't have the full story about what's going on, so.
04:03Who's out front?
04:05The wife and the neighbors.
04:06They're going to have a key, right?
04:07Does somebody have a key or no?
04:09No, she doesn't have a key.
04:11They were traveling together.
04:12He came back early because he had a migraine.
04:15When?
04:15What?
04:15Today?
04:16She hasn't talked to him for two days.
04:17He was supposed to be staying with their daughter.
04:22Did you try these doors?
04:23No.
04:25That one's locked.
04:29When was the last time you talked to your daughter?
04:32Your daughter?
04:33He was staying with your daughter?
04:35His daughter.
04:35He was staying with his daughter.
04:36His daughter.
04:37When was, did you talk to her?
04:39No, no, I haven't.
04:40I don't have a phone on me.
04:42I can call that.
04:43Where does she live?
04:44New Jersey.
04:46How did he get to New Jersey?
04:48Did he take, um, he flew there?
04:51He drove back.
04:52He was here.
04:56Is there a garage door opener in one of these cars?
05:00Has there been anything different about him other than the migraine?
05:05Yeah.
05:06He's been real.
05:08I can get in the car.
05:10He's been real lately.
05:13I don't know.
05:14He's just unhappy.
05:16Okay.
05:21Does he own any firearms that you know of?
05:24No.
05:25No?
05:25No, no.
05:28Are all of your cars here?
05:31Okay.
05:32Would he be expecting you to come home right now?
05:34And he should be home right now.
05:46Nope.
05:50Okay.
05:53We obviously got the garage door open, but the inside door is locked.
05:57We're just going to force that open and go take a look, okay?
05:59All right.
06:05Sergeant.
06:07Are you going to stay here?
06:08Yeah.
06:09We're going to shut the garage door and then go in.
06:17Is there a button right there next to the door?
06:18Looks like it.
06:38We got a flashlight with him?
06:40Yeah.
06:41There we go.
06:43What's your gun?
06:44Need your gun.
06:44Need your police.

09:22Why is he in there?
09:23They're calling for the squad, so that would mean that he would be in there.

13:35Okay. Family coming here?
13:37What? Stay here.
13:39Who are you related to?
13:40Richard.
13:41Richard? Okay.
13:43Who are you to him?
13:45I'm his brother's brother-in-law.
13:47I'm very close with him. I was just here with him for three hours.
13:51Today?
13:51Two days ago.
13:52Two days ago.
13:53Lieutenant?
13:54Yes.
13:55The family member?
13:56Hi. Can you give me just a moment and I'll be right with you.
13:58What happened? Is he allowed?
13:59He has passed and that's what we're looking into.
14:02Okay?
14:03So, that's the most I can tell you right now.
14:07And if we're in such a situation like this, we can't...
14:10Okay. Okay. It's okay. It's okay.
14:12We have to look further into it.
14:14We can't...
14:16There's nothing that we're going to be able to tell you right now.
14:18Is his wife in the way?
14:19No. She went to the hospital.
14:23Right now.
14:26There's nothing that I'm going to be able to tell you right now.
14:31I'm going to come over here in this porch now.
14:33Okay. Okay. I'm not... I'm okay. I'm okay.
14:35Okay. I... I... I understand. I understand this is hard for you.
14:39It's harder for me.
14:40You don't know why.
14:42I just was with him. I was just with...
14:44Two days ago.
14:49I'm going to call his brother.
14:51I'm going to call his brother.
14:51I'm going to call his brother.
14:52Why don't you give me your information so I can contact you if I need to?
14:58I don't know what happened.
14:59I just want people to come back to...
15:01And we have a chat to speak to this.
15:03Good.
15:04This guy right here in the purple shirt.
15:05Mm-hmm.
15:06Possibly last guy to see him alive.
15:07Okay.
15:08I don't know where he was.
15:09I got his name.
15:09This guy? Is that a brother?
15:11It's his brother.
15:11This is a brother in a black shirt.
15:14And the purple shirt is his mother-in-law.
15:16Okay.
15:17If you were to find him on Tuesday.
15:21Okay.
15:21You need my...
15:22I mean, in terms of...
15:25Do I have to do anything?
15:27Will his wife take care of it?
15:29Or do I have to?
15:30No.
15:30I don't know what he's doing.
15:31In terms of...
15:31In terms of...
15:32In terms of...
15:32In terms of...
15:33In terms of...
15:34...the immediate family would be...
15:35She went to the hospital because she was upset.
15:37But by all means, let's get your information if they need to contact you or...
15:41Or...
15:44So...
15:44What is your last name, sir?
15:45Stanley Born.
15:46W-A-R-S...
15:47This is only...
15:47Yeah.
15:48And...
15:49You're doing both of them, sir?
15:50No.
15:50Which birthday?
15:52I went to 77.
15:54Okay.
15:59And you're the brother-in-law?
16:02No.
16:02I am Stanley's brother-in-law.
16:05And I'm very close with Richard.
16:07Okay.
16:07So I just want to let you know...
16:09There's a history of problems here.
16:12And he has talked to me about them to nobody else.
16:16Okay.
16:16I'm also Richard's lawyer.
16:18He's been asking me...
16:20The last several weeks...
16:22I mean...
16:23Periodically, he's calling me.
16:25And again, I saw him for three and a half hours the other day with my kids...
16:28To change the trustee on his trust.
16:30Mm-hmm.
16:31But it's very unusual because it's been now over five or six years.
16:35And lately...
16:36Why...
16:36Why would he want to change the trustee?
16:38What's your opinion?
16:39Because his brother is the trustee on the trust.
16:42Okay.
16:42And the two of them...
16:43They weren't talking to each other.
16:45And Richard's bunkered himself in for the last year and a half.
16:48But did it look like anybody came in?
16:51It doesn't.
16:52I don't...
16:52I don't know.
16:53Yeah.
16:54Right.
16:54Okay.
16:55And, you know, just being...
16:56Just being perfectly honest with you.
16:58If I didn't know, I couldn't tell you at this point.
16:59All right.
17:00Okay.
17:00So I...
17:01Like he said, it's suspicious.
17:02So we just want to make sure we're doing everything right.
17:05And we don't want anything to slip through the cracks.
17:07I want to tell you something.
17:08I've known Richard since 1979.
17:11There was a lot of those risks.
17:13He went through his divorce a few years ago.
17:16He lost it.
17:17Completely.
17:19Kids...
17:19His two kids are estranged and completely screwed up from it.
17:23His parents disowned him.
17:24His wife's not calling him.
17:26How long has he been remarried?
17:29Five, six, seven years, or six years old.
17:31And she's not Jewish.
17:32And she converted.
17:33And it was a big problem.
17:34Your parents...
17:35I saw him the other day.
17:37His old wife was in London.
17:39And he couldn't make it to London.
17:41And his wife went over there and didn't contact him for about ten days.
17:46He was distraught over that.
17:48He was distraught over the fact that she was nuts.
17:51He would get a text or something, but that was it.
17:54And he said that to me about five times already.
17:56We were sitting there.
17:57Right.
17:57And I was supposed to go out with him.
18:00So, I just wanted to tell you this.
18:02I have more insight into him than his brother does.
18:05I would imagine one of our detectives may call you any day or two.
18:08You can call me anytime you want.
18:18Can you stick around if I can run or you just want to talk to him about yourself?
18:21No, I have a...
18:22I'll talk to him about myself.
18:23Okay.
18:26This is Detective Traub.
18:28This is an interview with Howard Lawton.
18:31I heard from one of the other officers that you have had some recent conversations with him.
18:36Is that correct?
18:37That is correct.
18:38He started calling me in July.
18:40I haven't talked to him in a year maybe.
18:41Okay.
18:42Do you know what it all of a sudden triggered him wanting to reach out to you in July?
18:48It has to do with a family issue and it's a huge problem.
18:58Police say 59-year-old Dr. Richard Warren was at his Beechwood home after cutting short a planned overseas vacation
19:05due to motion sickness.
19:06His wife Jane returning from the trip Thursday to find the house locked with no answer.
19:11Police discovered the podiatrist's body upstairs with at least five gunshot wounds.
19:21going back to what we were discussing before about these conversations that you've had with him.
19:29Richard was very upset about his relationship with his brother.
19:33How so?
19:34His father and his mother live with his brother.
19:38Okay.
19:38And Richard hasn't seen them in a year.
19:40And my brother and sister-in-law are taking care of them and something between them happened about a year
19:45and a half ago.
19:46I don't know what it is.
19:47Okay.
19:47But clearly I think you can imagine that it had something to do with Richard's not being there for them.
19:56Had he changed his will or anything like that?
19:59He wanted his wife substituted in.
20:02Okay, so he wanted his wife in.
20:03I won't go into detail, but yes, something to that nature.
20:07Anything else that I should be aware of?
20:10Richard has been in a very bad place for a very long time.
20:14And this is not a secret.
20:18He was a family member.
20:22He was just, he's just upset.
20:25Excuse me one second.
20:27Detective Finucane, according to wife, there are no weapons in the house.
20:35I'm thinking if there was a rifle underneath him, the position of his body,
20:39we'd be able to at least see it sticking out at one end.
20:42The rounds look like, they look like rifle rounds.
20:45There are a lot of shell casings and live rounds in this, in this house upstairs.
20:52When was he last seen allegedly by a neighbor?
20:54The neighbor saw him taking the garbage out Tuesday evening.
20:57What's he doing here?
20:58Uh, he's wearing a white shirt with a yarmulke.
21:02When's the garbage table?
21:03A Wednesday morning, which was yesterday.
21:06Today's Thursday, so we're looking at some time between...
21:0824 hours.
21:09Tuesday night.
21:10Yeah.
21:11Was there any chance anybody else wielded garbage cans at home?
21:13Is he an old man?
21:14No, he's 59.
21:16He's 59.
21:16None of the neighbors out front said that they did.
21:2259.
21:25Party's are on their way.
21:26They've made arrangements with the hotels that come back for their property tomorrow.
21:30Hello.
21:32Hello.
21:33We're looking for information on seeing or hearing things sometime after Tuesday night.
21:38Tuesday night is Thursday.
21:40Thursday night, right.
21:40Yeah, because there was two days...
21:41That's what I told the other officer.
21:42I recognized that it was two days worth of the mail flyers.
21:45Is that what it looks like?
21:46Yeah, because...
21:47The garbage goes out Tuesday night.
21:50Right.
21:50And they pick it up Wednesday morning.
21:52Did you happen to see if his cans were out?
21:54Do you remember?
21:55No.
21:55The guy that lives in the house on the other side of them...
21:58He said he saw him out.
21:59He saw him putting out the garbage Tuesday night.
22:00He said he saw him out.
22:01I don't know if the cans went out.
22:03That's the thing.
22:04I don't know if anybody noticed the cans went out.
22:07You don't know anybody in the neighborhood who has any video security cameras on any part
22:11of their houses or anything like that?
22:12We don't.
22:13Okay.
22:14We're right across the street.
22:15I got you.
22:16So when you say it, when it happened, what is it?
22:18What happened?
22:19Apparently he got shot.
22:20Rich?
22:22He's dead.
22:22I can't confirm any information of an ongoing investigation.
22:26Yeah.
22:26That's all they said.
22:27He said he was dead and she couldn't go in the house.
22:30And somebody said something about Blanco.
22:32So maybe I'm making this up.
22:33I don't know.
22:34Then stop making things up.
22:36If you think of anything, my name is Patrolman Spellman.
22:40Like the cow, feel free to call me.
22:43Give me a voicemail if you think you're here or anything.
22:46Hello, ma'am.
22:46Hello?
22:47I'm Oxford Gray.
22:48There was an incident over at...
22:50Yeah.
22:50So we're just trying to talk to the neighbors, see if anybody had heard anything the last
22:54few days or if you've seen...
22:55I just know he's my podiatrist.
22:56And I was supposed to schedule an appointment.
22:58Okay.
22:59And I was calling all day yesterday and his home father was busy.
23:01So I thought maybe he was off the hook.
23:03Have you seen him out at the house recently?
23:06No.
23:06Last couple days, couple weeks now.
23:08Hear anything strange yesterday, couple days, last night?
23:13No.
23:14Okay.
23:14Alright, ma'am.
23:15Well, thank you for your help.
23:17I probably saw him in the past few days and waved to him.
23:20But I haven't spoken to him since.
23:21You don't recall exactly when or...
23:24Yeah, the timeline.
23:24I'll tell you something interesting.
23:26Very interesting.
23:29I don't know when this happened, but a few days ago, a rabbi lives in his backyard, like
23:34five in the morning.
23:36I saw him a few hours later.
23:38He says, did you hear?
23:39At five o'clock, my wife and I woke up.
23:42Something sounded like a gunshot.
23:44Do you remember who told you that?
23:45Rabbi Chaiken lives in his backyard.
23:47Oh, okay, the guy behind him?
23:49Yeah.
23:49Okay.
23:49But that's what he told you?
23:51Yeah.
23:52Yeah, my husband actually texted me.
23:52When did the rabbi...
23:53Do you remember when...
23:54Do you think you still have a text?
23:56I texted my wife and said, did you hear something at five o'clock, a loud noise at
23:59five in the morning?
24:00Okay.
24:00He said, no.
24:01Why?
24:01I said, well, because...
24:02So maybe you remember when he told you this because you texted your wife right after
24:07then, yeah?
24:07I think it was two days ago because it was the night of that thunderstorm.
24:10I think that maybe it was lightning or something or thunder.
24:13It was Tuesday.
24:15Tuesday, okay, so...
24:16Rabbi Chaiken said he and his wife woke up at five a.m. from a loud noise.
24:18I didn't hear it.
24:19Did you hear a loud noise at five a.m.?
24:22Okay, so on Tuesday at seven o'clock...
24:25At five a.m.
24:26So Tuesday morning at five a.m.
24:26So Tuesday morning at five a.m.
24:27Right, right, right, right.
24:28But he had talked that morning.
24:30You know, as I live so close by, he said, hey, at five o'clock in the morning,
24:34I heard a loud noise.
24:35I think he ate me.
24:36I remember what he said.
24:37A very loud noise.
24:38Me and my wife up.
24:40Okay.
24:40I said, no.
24:40I didn't hear anything.
24:42Would it be inappropriate if I asked to take a picture of the phone to the message?
24:46Sure.
24:47Here.
24:47Oh, it doesn't say the date.
24:48Oh, no.
24:48That'd be perfect.
24:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:01Hey, they go.
25:04Ready?
25:07Jane, I'm gonna have to ask you this.
25:09Do you know what happened to your husband tonight?
25:11No.
25:13To your knowledge, was anybody out to hurt him for any reason whatsoever that you're aware of?
25:19He had problems with his sons.
25:23I'm not trying to say, you know.
25:25Yeah.
25:25But they threatened him.
25:27They threatened him?
25:28How did they threaten him?
25:30To chop him up.
25:31To chop up their own father?
25:45Beechwood police officers discovered the body of 59-year-old Richard Warren at his residence on Breathwood Road.
25:52The victim died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.
25:56There was no forced entry to the home, and the circumstances at the scene were not indicative of a random
26:03incident committed by a stranger.
26:05That scene was turned over to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, or Evidence Collection and Investigation.
26:13I am sure I speak for the entire Beechwood community when I say that our thoughts are with the Warren
26:18family and their friends after this tragic and senseless event.
26:27Richard's two sons, how do they threaten him?
26:31To chop him up.
26:32To chop up their own father?
26:35And they hit him.
26:36How long ago did they threaten him?
26:38About three years ago.
26:40And which one of the boys said it?
26:42Michael.
26:43Michelson.
26:45I'm afraid of him.
26:47Why are you afraid of him?
26:50You don't know what he's thinking.
26:53They didn't like me dating their father.
26:55Okay, no.
26:56They wanted their father to give him everything, and they didn't want to work.
26:59And the latest thing that he told me that they told him was that, um, you made me, and so
27:07you have to take care of us.
27:09Okay.
27:10My husband, he bought a foreclosed house for Mark and Michael.
27:16Okay.
27:16So, uh, he owns a house in South Buclid, and he has it for the two sons to live there.
27:22Okay.
27:22Oh, God.
27:25And, um, my husband is telling me that, and he probably goes, I'm gonna write him a letter, James, and
27:32I'm gonna tell him that at the end of the year, they have to find a job.
27:37Okay.
27:38So, um, do you know, do they have any firearms or, you know, guns?
27:44I don't know.
27:45Um, I do know that they have cameras all around the house.
27:52Cameras where?
27:53At the house on Elmwood.
27:55Oh, the boys have cameras on their house.
27:57And why is this?
27:58My husband never would really tell me anything because I think, you know, it's a saved face.
28:07And he knew I was afraid of them.
28:11Oh, God.
28:12What?
28:13Oh, my husband is gone.
28:48Daniel, is there anybody that you think would cause any harm to your father?
28:53Um, well, I have two brothers, and we do not have a very good relationship with them, and my father
28:58had spoken to them in quite a while.
29:00I'm not gonna lie that they would have done something.
29:03Have they ever been in trouble with the law?
29:05Well, actually, there was one time they tried to break into my father's house, so the cops didn't come.
29:12I don't know what happened.
29:13Okay.
29:15I'm just, I'm just sort of shocked at trying to understand.
29:19Yeah.
29:20We're sorry for your, your loss here.

40:24Two men are dead in South Euclid following an overnight standoff involving SWAT.
40:30This could all be tied to the murder of a doctor in Beachwood.
40:33The standoff lasted nearly 12 hours, and no officers were hurt as gunfire was exchanged.
40:38Neighboring homes had to be evacuated, and power was even cut.
40:42The medical examiner identified the deceased occupants of the home to indeed be Michael Warren, 31 years of age, and
40:49Mark Warren, 29 years of age.
40:52The cause of death for both was determined to be suicide.
40:56Michael and Mark Warren are suspected to be responsible for the death of their father.
41:01Detectives are taking steps to conclude the investigation, and are confident that once the evidence is fully processed,
41:08it will reveal that Michael and or Mark Warren committed this crime.
41:56And today we remember with tremendous love,
41:59Richard, who was simply the best.
42:02He was a gutta neshamma, a kind and generous man.
42:07He was our Rick, the kind of person we all strive to be.
42:11Dr. Richard H. Warren leaves an incredible legacy, following a stellar career tragically cut short.
42:19There are no real words to explain this tragedy, and yet we can truly say Richard was an incredible, loving
42:26father,
42:27a devoted physician, a loving husband, son, and brother.
42:34Tati, I will love you every day for the rest of my life, and I know that you will be
42:39watching over me.
42:41You had so much love to give, and you were taken from this world much too soon.
42:46You had so much love to give, and you were taken from this world.
