Seth and Sean discuss how Tank Dell assessed his first 2 seasons, his aim to be legendary, and if Joe Mixon will be back as a Texan.
Transcript
00:00Tank Dell, I'm very anxious to talk to Dr. Chow tomorrow.
00:06Dr. Chow, who is a former team doctor for the Chargers.
00:10You've known him for a long time, Seth.
00:12And he's making his living now, at least part of it,
00:17by being an injury expert on social media and other channels for NFL injuries.
00:23He makes his living off of his website, which gives gambling advice.
00:28Yeah, based on injuries.
00:30Yeah, part of his, whatever.
00:31So we're going to have him on tomorrow.
00:37And what?
00:38I almost threw a Tide Pod at you right now.
00:42Yeah, whatever, the correct thing.
00:43Whatever, Seth.
00:44Yeah.
00:46That was a little dismissive.
00:48So he's going to be on with us tomorrow.
00:55I'm actually more anxious to talk to him about Tank Dell's injury
00:58because this is somebody who might actually play for the Texans next year.
01:00Yeah.
01:01Than Joe Mixon.
01:04Before we talk about that, here was Tank Dell on a recent podcast.
01:10And I apologize.
01:10I have the name written down.
01:11But he talked about, he gave his self-assessment of what his first couple years have looked like
01:16and the comeback this coming year.
01:19My whole, my dreams is really just to get back out there because I haven't, I haven't scratched surface yet.
01:25Yeah, 1,000.
01:26I had an okay rookie year, really had a bad.
01:29My second year, I felt like to me personally, it wasn't a good year at all.
01:32So, and I feel like I haven't scratched the surface yet to be who I am and to be what I know I can be in the NFL.
01:39So, my dreams, I'm trying to be a legend.
01:43Like, I'm trying to be legendary.
01:45I'm trying to hollip.
01:45You already is, bro.
01:49Trying to be legendary.
01:52I love podcasts.
01:54You already are, man.
01:55You already are.
01:55Well, you know, by NFL standards, typically, they like to see more than one and a half seasons to become an absolute legend.
02:02He's a legend at U of H.
02:03But I liked hearing him say that he didn't think he had a good season his second year.
02:08He didn't think he had a good season his first year, it sounded like.
02:11Like, I was okay.
02:12He got started and, you know, he wanted to build on that promise of that first year.
02:18And I don't want to say it fizzled out or anything.
02:21But it felt like he was going through.
02:23Yeah, but even before he got hurt, that was the best.
02:26He was on track to have his best game of the season, the game he got hurt.
02:29Oh, no, but I was talking about he said his rookie year.
02:32He's like, I was okay my rookie year.
02:33I'm like, God, you're way better than okay.
02:35Right.
02:36But then to build on that in the second year, it just wasn't what he was hoping for, obviously.
02:42I like it when athletes give an assessment of themselves that if you give the exact same assessment,
02:47the fans of that athlete will attack you.
02:50Because if you – that's a classic.
02:52If I took those exact same words and changed the pronouns to, you know, he didn't have that good a year,
02:59however you phrased it or whatever.
03:01A lot of Tank Dell fans would be like, you're a jerk.
03:03Yeah.
03:04You're a jerk for agreeing with Tank Dell.
03:06Yes.
03:06But that's, by and large, it wasn't the kind of season he wanted to have.
03:11He is a guy that, you know, just like as it was with CJ, when you have a promising rookie performance, that's cool,
03:17that's great, but, man, you've got to get that much better as the league catches up to what you cannot do.
03:22Yeah.
03:22So, Tank's a smaller guy who makes up for it with incredible speed, and he's got to learn all those nuances of exactly how to operate in the NFL.
03:32His teams are starting to take away your strengths.
03:35And I think for him, it's just a matter of – it's not going to be a question of work ethic or anything like that.
03:40It's a question of can he come back from this catastrophic knee injury.
03:43And that's something that – talking to Nick yesterday, he kind of echoed what Tank had said about they tried to make a push.
03:50They thought there was a chance that he could have played at the end of this last season.
03:54Yeah, that's the second time we've heard that now.
03:56So, I feel like that was a real thing.
03:58Yeah.
03:58And he went – and, you know, Casario went into more detail with it yesterday.
04:03You asked a really good question about the sports science part of it.
04:07And, you know, they can monitor exactly – they have all the data on how fast he was moving back when he was healthy.
04:12And all the data on any kind of – you know, imbalances between left and right and all that.
04:17And it sounds like he was getting pretty close to where they might have felt comfortable putting him out on the field and it just didn't work out.
04:23Yeah.
04:23But with three extra months before the offseason program begins and then three or four extra months after that,
04:31I'm allowing myself to feel as optimistic as I have about Tank Dell.
04:34Okay, I was just about to ask you that because we went – we went deeper on Tank Dell than I thought we would with Nick yesterday.
04:40Because he was pretty – I thought he was pretty forthcoming about everything.
04:43So, we just kind of kept pushing and pushing to the point where I think I asked him at one point, like,
04:47okay, so where's he at?
04:48Yeah.
04:48You know?
04:49And he said he's trending in the direction to get back to where he was, probably not quite there yet.
04:54And that's what I wanted to ask you is you're after – I mean, we did like three or four Tank questions with Nick yesterday.
05:00Are you – where is your – about that right now?
05:03And you just kind of said you feel – it sounds like you feel a little bit better.
05:06I feel – I'm at the point now where I'm expecting to see Tank Dell on the field for a preseason game.
05:12That's where I am right now.
05:13I mean, you know what?
05:14They're really careful with guys who are coming off of injuries in preseason games.
05:18So, I'm expecting to see him out there with the ones in practice during training camp.
05:22Okay, okay.
05:23Do you expect to see him at OTAs?
05:25Yeah.
05:25Because we get to go to OTAs in minicamp.
05:28Do you expect him to be working out with the team or is he going to be on a side field working out?
05:33I think – okay.
05:35I'm comfortable right now.
05:38If he was almost – if he was getting close to playing in NFL games.
05:40Yeah.
05:41But they're super careful with guys.
05:43That time of year anymore, they're really, really careful almost to the point where we want to see you –
05:48we want to see you do everything except scrimmage football for like two months and make sure you feel good.
05:53Right.
05:54When there's no hurry in the spring.
05:55Right.
05:55I expect to see him out there participating in the OTA practices.
05:59Yeah.
05:59I don't know if he'll be doing like the – I don't want to call it live action.
06:03Running routes.
06:04Being out there in scrimmage situations.
06:06I don't know if we'll see that.
06:07I do think we'll see it in training camp and early on.
06:10I think he needs to be out there for the stuff that is implemented or installation type stuff.
06:15Yeah.
06:15Or the walkthroughs and things like that.
06:17Oh, yeah.
06:17He hasn't been out there.
06:18No, I don't think he's going to be off working on the side.
06:19Like the side.
06:20Yeah, no, no.
06:21I think he'll be a participant.
06:22I think he'll be a limited participant in those practices.
06:24Gotcha.
06:25But when it comes time to run plays and actually run routes, he may just be standing next to
06:28the offense or something.
06:29And then when we get to Joe Mixon, the question is, is he going to be physically in the city
06:33of Houston during OTAs?
06:34Yes.
06:34Right now, I'm pessimistic that he'll actually be in the city of Houston during OTAs.
06:39Yes.
06:40I think so, too.
06:40I mean, Nick, yesterday, too, I saw a couple of replies after we played our Nicker interview
06:44earlier where people were angry that Nick isn't being more transparent about Joe Mixon.
06:49And I feel like he's being as transparent as he can really be in saying they genuinely don't
06:54know what's going on with Joe Mixon.
06:56And we asked him, you know, when will you know more?
07:00And I think he said they've got a meeting scheduled or planned that they'll be able to talk to him.
07:05But it feels like it feels to me like Joe Mixon is kind of filling them in on his status at his leisure.
07:12And I don't I think from a Texan standpoint, they have to move forward just with the full expectation
07:19that Joe Mixon is not going to be a part when it comes to roster construction, draft free agency.
07:23I think they need to operate like Joe Mixon isn't on this roster because nobody knows what nobody,
07:29including the Houston Texans themselves, themselves have a clue what exactly is going on with Joe Mixon.
07:35Absolutely.
