00:00Hey NaturallyCurlyWorld, it is I, April, and today's Watch and Go, I'm gonna be
00:05talking about how I watched Proud Mary.
00:12Who the hell are you?
00:17I'm Mary.
00:22This movie, you guys, absolutely blew me away.
00:26I'm still salty that Sony Pictures did not hype this enough, which is just nothing but
00:33some misogynoir, and we all know that misogynoir is the devil, but my auntie Taraji P. Henson
00:39knocked it out of the park with this one, and while I wash my hair today, I'm gonna tell
00:42you guys how and why.
00:44I'm gonna start things off with the Oyin Handmade Oh My Glide, because although my twist out
00:50looks big, it is full of the secret that it's tangled as hell, so we're gonna go ahead and
00:55fix that.
00:56Then after that, I'm gonna hit my hair with the mane and tail pre-poo, then we're gonna
01:00go into the Bounce Curl Moisturizing Shampoo, that's what I'm gonna be in the sink with today.
01:05And then, this one really got me interested, it's the Elaine Hair and Body Deep Conditioner,
01:10but they separate it by porosity, you guys, and I've told you before, I have Swiss cheese
01:14hair, so this is their high porosity line.
01:16I'm gonna finish things off with the Curl Dynasty Kalahari Leave-In, and today I've also
01:22got some fun non-hair product-y hair products, some hair tools, that's how you say it.
01:28So I got the Texture Pro Wave Comb, I'm gonna detangle with this because it looks nice and
01:33wide, and then I got the Hair Remedy Frizz Eliminating Towel, that I'm pretty sure is like
01:37the jersey sheets that I had in college, but let's see what it does for my frizz.
01:41Alright, so we started things off in Boston, which believe it or not, you guys, has more
01:45than baked beans and cream pie, it's actually a hotbed of criminal activity apparently.
01:51We open with the scene of Mary stalking her prey, she's got on a blonde wig, and she is
01:58about to take somebody out, and I don't mean for dinner, okay?
02:01Now her mission is to kill everybody in the house, right?
02:05She hears somebody, and you know, as a contract killer, you're not about to leave a witness,
02:10right?
02:11So she creeps up, she goes in, she's already shed blood today, she's about to shed some
02:17more, and what does she see?
02:18It's a little boy.
02:19Just this dumb tween-age kid, and he's got his headphones on, he's playing his Xbox,
02:25he doesn't even know that his dad is downstairs, dead.
02:29And she just can't bring herself to kill him, she closes the door, and she's out.
02:35We go ahead and we cut to, I believe, a year later, and we see how the boy's been living.
02:42Spoiler alert, not super great.
02:45He is actually a drug runner for the vaguely threatening Eastern European mafia of choice,
02:53and the leader of these guys is called Uncle, and he is just awful.
03:00He's beating on this kid.
03:02The beating that he got before he left really took its toll on him, and he passes out in
03:07the street.
03:08And that's when Mary comes back onto the scene.
03:10She comes in, like an avenging angel, she swoops the child off the street, brings him,
03:16not to a shelter, not to the cops, she brings him into her own home, you guys.
03:21Lays him up on her own designer couch.
03:25Their start is suitably rocky, you know, even though that tenderness is there and she gets
03:30to it pretty quickly.
03:31He, uh, he's kind of a piece of work.
03:33But as she's nursing him and getting him to open up and so forth, she reveals she's just
03:38like, yeah, I know who you work for, yeah, I know this, I know that, I know, I know everything
03:41about you.
03:42How?
03:43She's not gonna tell him.
03:44Uh, but it comes out that she has been keeping tabs on this kid the entire year, just kind
03:51of keeping a watchful eye whenever she can.
03:53That's why she knew to be right there when he was getting mugged.
03:57I'm gonna go ahead and finish the rest of these twists off camera, cause it's gonna take
04:00a bit, but I'll be back for you guys when I start to shampoo.
04:03Okay you guys, now I'm gonna go ahead and pre-poo.
04:08It is really cool to see not just a black gang family, even though you could make the
04:15argument that what is the mafia but a gang in suits, right?
04:20But it's really cool to see a kind of elegant black crime family for once.
04:25These people are wearing Armani, Taraji is drinking milk out of the organic glass bottles,
04:32you know, so they're a more refined class of criminal, and it's really cool to see
04:37that for black people specifically.
04:39I'm just gonna keep raking this pre-poo through my hair.
04:43I'm gonna go ahead and shampoo over the sink, and then we'll be back with some of the thrilling
04:48conclusions and the action highlights.
04:53Alright you guys, so while I was off screen I went ahead and shampooed, rinsed, and now I'm
04:57on my deep conditioning phase in this super stylish sour cap.
05:01One of the biggest themes in the movie that I loved was women aren't to be owned.
05:06In fact, no person is to be owned, but because Taraji is a black woman, we're seeing this
05:11from a black woman's lens, it's black women cannot be owned.
05:15The most important men in a black woman's life, in a straight black woman's life, are
05:20gonna be her dad, her brother, her lover, and her son, right?
05:26We get the brother and lover kinda combined into the son of the mafia household, but her
05:33mafia dad tries to own her in saying, you leave when I say so and that's gonna be in a box.
05:39Her former lover tries to control her in saying, he goes, you're not the mother in type, I know you,
05:45only we can do this together, you have to be mine.
05:49But it's also a familial betrayal when she wants to leave because it's just like, we grew up,
05:54they're about the same age, so it's like, we grew up shooting people together.
05:57How could you leave me?
05:58So that leaves the son, and she doesn't let him just walk all over her.
06:03It's just like, you don't own me either.
06:05I just feel a sense of responsibility to you, but the love, the love between them is there,
06:10and it's really sweet, you guys.
06:12Alright you guys, I'm gonna let this marinate for a little while, and then I'll give you
06:15my final, final thoughts while I'm doing my leave-in, and bid you goodbye then.
06:22So I'm just putting the leave-in conditioner on my nice damp hair, I'm re-twisting it again.
06:27If you wanna call it a brainless action flick, that's totally not undeserved, but I feel like,
06:34hey, you know, after Rambo, and Alien, and all these other action movies that don't put
06:44people that look at least a little bit like me at the forefront, I kinda want my dumb shoot-em-up
06:49flicks too.
06:50And I'm definitely upset that it didn't receive a lot of the hype that I think it
06:56should've.
06:57I really think that if Sony put more money behind pushing this out, it would've been
07:03a lot better than it was.
07:05Or rather, it would've been a lot bigger than it was.
07:08Alright, I'm gonna continue twisting this leave-in through my hair off screen.
07:12We'll see you guys in a few minutes while I work this through.
07:17Alright you guys, I lied about the number of products I was gonna use today.
07:21I also used the Cocoa Conscious Collective Intensive Style Primer.
07:26It's supposed to be a heat protectant, but it's all oils with no silicone, so I went ahead
07:31and used it as an ode to try and seal my hair up a little bit.
07:35Final thoughts on Proud Mary are, I give it a 4.5 out of 5, and that .5 off is a loss because
07:43of style points.
07:44It's really not fair to ask Taraji P. Henson to carry an entire movie style all by herself.
07:50So this is not on her, this is more about the editing and the color direction and the
07:55stylistic choices that were made overall.
07:57Since most of y'all did not go see this in theaters, which, shame, I will say it's definitely
08:03worth the buy once it comes out on DVD.
08:06So go ahead and tell me if you saw it in the comments below.
