Transcript
00:00Hey Naturally Curly World, it is I, April and Gerilyn and today we are going to be
00:05washing our hair and reviewing Black Panther!
00:09You're going to forever!
00:11Cha-la-la! Boombayay! Cha-la-la! Boombayay!
00:14Like the mental, spiritual, and physical paralysis that I experienced post-viewing
00:22like was mind-boggling. It was mind-boggling. I couldn't talk. I'm still having issues.
00:27Yeah. I was just like this in my seat and theater I saw it had reclining seats so I
00:33had to get my boyfriend to like kind of slide me out of it as I was just like...
00:37So many beautiful Black people like doing what we already know we can do which is be super
00:44all the time you know what I'm saying? All the time. Literal magic.
00:50Okay. Okay. We're all pretty hyped. We're pretty hyped. We're pretty hyped up.
00:55a little bit.
00:57Black Panther has protected a lot of generations. It is your time.
01:07The world's going to start over. I'm going to burn it all.
01:17Is this your king? This ends today.
01:23I'm going to co-wash today because you guys can't hear it for yourselves, but my hair is super dry.
01:33I'm going to grab our main choice. I'm going to use their Heavenly Halo deep conditioner.
01:39And I'm just going to do a regular shampoo. To all of our African curlies, we apologize. Well,
01:44I apologize because we're going to get really undignified here. It's going to get full-on
01:49American in here. Gotta do the work. And see, this is all I was doing when Michael B. Jordan was on
01:55screen. Oh, girl. Fighting around in that water.
02:02Girl! All right, we're going to scoot off screen real quick and wash our hair and then we're going
02:06to come back and talk about plot. I have the Curls Dynasty Pumpkin Mint Deep Treatment that I'm going to
02:12put on while we talk about the plot. And I have Maui Moisture's Heal and Hydrate Shea Butter Hair Mask.
02:19All right, let's get into it. All right, so plot-wise, we start off not quite in media res,
02:25but with a flashback. Mean Streets, Oakland, California. And that is where we get our first
02:31taste of the Wakandans. Without giving too much away, we discover that there has been a plot
02:39that's been foiled. And that plot is to get Wakandan technology into the hands of Black Americans.
02:46What? So that's in 1992. We get to Black Panther. T'Challa, royal prince of the nation of Wakanda,
02:59our sovereign and his general Okoye, leader of the Dora Milaje. And they're about to go on a mission.
03:08His intended, his boo thing, is named Nakia. She is on this mission. She's a Wakandan spy. She goes out
03:17and infiltrates stuff. So she's out here doing outreach. Now Wakanda is a very private, insular
03:24place, for better and for worse. But she is out here reaching out and helping other people. Although the
03:31majority of the women were dark skinned, which is in itself a revolutionary casting act,
03:37everybody had such a different personality. Nobody was cookie cutter. You could see everybody's
03:43different motivations and quirks. And it was so refreshing. Because colorism is real out here.
03:50And it sucks. So this was pretty great. This was the first movie where I sat down and I felt
04:01comfortable. I felt comfort. This one was just so familial. Yeah, very much. It was incredible.
04:09So after we get our first opening, we do see Wakanda and we're introduced to one of the main conflicts that
04:15we have. One being that T'Challa's father is dead. He died in a UN explosion in one of the Avengers
04:22movies, which I haven't seen. But they do flashback to it. He's dead and T'Challa has to claim his throne
04:29now. And this is where I'll do an aside to say that I loved this portion of the movie because they
04:35explained the fact that they have a pan-African aesthetic in a way that narratively made sense.
04:43See, Wakanda was formed by five different tribes, one of which the Jabari were a little bit more
04:48isolationist. But it's five different tribes that melded together on that same patch of land and
04:54came together and lived peacefully and kept developing and developing from there. I thought that was bomb.
05:00The movie gives a great, not an excuse, but a good narrative reason for that African collectivism in
05:06that those five tribes came together. Killmonger, Erik Killmonger, my baby, his girlfriend and Claw pull
05:13off a heist because there is, unbeknownst to anyone else, a big ol' hunk of vibranium from Wakanda that
05:19made it into another part of Africa. And people will pay top dollar for this stuff. So they pull off a
05:26heist, it's gone and they're on their way to sell it to the U.S. in Korea. Wakanda gets hold of this
05:34after T'Challa is crowned king and they're not having it. Now we gotta come head to head in South Korea
05:42and we go into the gambling scene and that's where the real, real, real big screen action starts taking
05:48place. Okay guys, we're gonna marinade for a little bit and then we'll be right back. Alright guys,
05:54we're back. I'm gonna put in the Herbal Hair Tonic and Soy Milk Deep Hydration Softening Milk from the
06:01Heavenly Halo line of Maine Choice. What I'm gonna do now is actually use mousse. It's called the Maine
06:07Choice Pink Lemonade and Coconut Super Antioxidant and Texture Beautifier Mousse. I'm gonna use the Flora
06:14and Curl Protect Me. Very appropriate African citrus bloom hair oil. And then I'm also gonna hit my scalp
06:23with this Balance Guru scalp treatment. It comes in a glass bottle so you know it's legit. So these are
06:29gonna be the three things that I'm doing while we finish up discussing the plot. We're going into South
06:35Korea, which I actually didn't expect, but it's awesome. Nakia, you guys, is amazing. She can speak
06:42Korean. She speaks fluent Korean and she's been there before. She's got ties. So we go into this
06:49humble looking fish market with this little Korean auntie minding it. Oh, it's fine. Except boom,
06:56you go past the secret door and it's a big old high rolling gambling one percent of the one percent
07:04type of joint and it's amazing. Basically what happens here is we get to see Okoye kicking butt in a giant
07:13dress. And this is also where we get to see the new suit in action. So we didn't neglect to mention
07:20this. So let's talk about Shuri real quick. Yeah. Let's talk about Shuri real quick. My little cousin
07:26out here. I love her. My little knee. She's a tech guru. She's a meme lord, which I love,
07:34and she represents a part of Wakanda that is going forward. So she's very, she's very westernized,
07:42actually. She wears t-shirts and she wears Leia buns and she can, she can still get down and do
07:49traditional stuff, but she greets her brother with what are those at his shoes. And it was amazing.
07:58She gave him the new suit that he only needs to kind of command to cover his whole body.
08:04And he goes and dukes it out, testing it out in the mean streets of Korea. So after we finish up there,
08:12we go back, we go back to Erik Killmonger. So Killmonger does get into Wakanda. We'll let you
08:18find out how. And he gets to challenge T'Challa for the crown and he wins. But uh, we all know that it's
08:28not going to be over like that. Our boy is not going out like that. And that's where things start
08:35getting really interesting. Everything from then on is a spoiler. We're going to let you guys see that
08:41for yourselves. Yeah. So, um, what was your favorite part of the movie? I know there's probably like
08:4810 of them at least, but like your very favorite part. Killmonger in the high council room.
08:58He just the attitude that he came in with, the cockiness, the line that he says to Angela Bassett,
09:06which again is a spoiler, but that was my favorite part. I'm just like,
09:10dang. And one of the scenes that really stood out to me, uh, that I absolutely loved,
09:16it wasn't so much about any person that was in the shot or any like anything crazy happening.
09:24It was just the music. There's a certain point in the movie where it's, we're pretty much into the
09:31last half of it, where there's a transition between what is inspired by Africa and what,
09:39you know, the sounds of Wakanda would sound like, what their music would sound like. It transitions to
09:46this really heavy hitting bass driven hip hop sound that is distinctly Californian. And,
09:55you know, just in that moment, I was like, wow. Also Kendrick, Kendrick.
10:03Kendrick. Oh, I mean, another favorite part of it that was just, you know, throughout the movie,
10:10obviously all the hair, all the hair, all the hair. We had, we had Fulani braids,
10:18we had box braids, we had locks, we had red clay, red osher clay mixed into hair like the Himba tribe
10:28ladies. And then we had, then we had no hair. We had completely shorn warrior women out here just
10:37doing the thing. Everyone looked so cool and it was so great seeing everyone mixed together.
10:43It's not about the shine. It's not about how to make your hair look like it's softer than it really
10:49is. It's about you embracing what's on top of your head and still wearing that within your body,
10:55your soul, and it's projected out. And it's perfect. It's beautiful. All right, you guys,
11:00this is what I finished up with. It was the Frederick Benjamin Sleekwater Styling Pomade.
11:05Because my hair is still super damp, you can kind of see it, but I guarantee that when I'm dry,
11:09it's going to be fly. Final thoughts are it was awesome. I laughed, I teared up a little bit,
11:16I twerked in my seat like I told y'all, and I rate it a full five out of five stars. My final thought
11:22is if you are not into any of the Marvel Universe films, you better start.
11:30A good place to start is with Black Panther. It's fantastic. If you like this video,
11:35go ahead and give it a like, share, and follow. We make these videos every week,
11:41so we'll see you soon. Bye!
