00:00Okay, now we're live. Hey, nationally curly world. Happy Monday. I'm Alexandra. I'm one of the
00:07nationally curly editors and y'all already know we are doing our weekly Q&A where if you have any
00:12questions or concerns or hair struggle that you want to share with us and we can answer them right
00:17here and right now. So we have a few questions that we pulled from last week. So we'll let a
00:26few people join us in about two minutes and then we'll go ahead and start in. So if you have anything
00:31on your mind that you really want us to answer today, we can definitely answer it for you. So
00:38feel free to comment below and then we will get started. I'm definitely noticing though a theme.
00:45So what we're thinking is we're going to start doing weekly themes to make it easier for you
00:51and one of them relates to the question for today which is about caring for your hair after
00:58going to the pool, going to the beach, or going to the lake. So that's definitely one of our questions.
01:03So I'm going to definitely answer that today so that we can get it going.
01:10So are we connected y'all? Are we good? Good? Good? Good? Okay. So for those of y'all just joining us,
01:18this is our Q&A that we do every Monday at 1230 Central. Sometimes it's one o'clock. You know,
01:22tune in. Just keep on rolling with us. So it's really for y'all. So we want to hear from y'all
01:28and see what your hair struggles, what are your hair's concerns and see how we can help you right
01:33here and right now. So our question that we have today is I'm looking for summer styles and what to do
01:42at the pool, lake, or beach. I'll be at a lot of pool parties this summer and can manage getting a
01:49leave-in and can manage getting a leave-in to protect my hair. But what do I do after that?
01:55Should I pull it up, leave it loose, add more conditioners in the day? I also don't know the
02:00people at the parties very well yet and don't want to come across as weird. What do I do in this
02:05situation? So it sounds like what I think when she's saying that she's like, I need to wash my hair
02:09like right afterwards. I'm like, hey, can I come in real quick? So I would definitely say to detangle
02:17and condition your hair before and twist it, braid it, or put it in a bun before. So that's definitely
02:24like your hair prep before you go to the pool or to the beach or do a protective style. So I know a lot
02:30of the girls in the office like Gerilyn right now, she has her Havana twist. You can do braids,
02:37box braids, whatever you want to do. So I don't even have to worry about that whole situation.
02:41You don't have to worry about really just cleaning your scalp because you have a protective style in.
02:45But if you're wearing your naturally curly hair, you definitely want to prep your hair by detangling
02:50it and conditioning it and putting some leave in before you go to the pool and twisting it,
02:55plaiting it, pulling it up in a high bun, even putting a hat on if you had to. And then afterwards,
03:02you want to definitely wash your hair and then deep condition afterwards. So those are some key
03:09tips that you can try before and after to really make sure that you are maintaining a good healthy
03:15hair regimen during the summer because I already know we're definitely going to be in the pool and
03:19at the beach, but you want to make sure you're taking care of your curls. So the next question is,
03:26I'm still experimenting with hair products. And yesterday I use a bit too much gel. It looks fine,
03:32but now it's frizzier and feels sticky. I have definitely been there and done that. I will say,
03:37I think the first thing is I noticed is, um, I was using way too much product, whether it was a cream
03:44or a gel. And, um, every single day I would keep applying more and it would just keep weighing my hair
03:51down and it would start feeling really sticky. So what I've done is instead of applying. So like the
03:58first day I wash my hair and then I style it. So once I already, um, style it with those products
04:03like gels and mousses, the next day I just refresh with the water bottle versus adding so much product
04:09to it every single day, because that, that product is still in your hair. Um, so all you really need to
04:14do is just re-wet it and it's refreshed. You finger coil it and you style it how you want to, and then you're good
04:19to go. Um, so that's definitely my tips with that is less is more with the styling products. Just
04:24refresh it with water and you are good. Um, and yeah, she said, do I have to wash it or refresh it?
04:30So you don't, you don't have to wash it unless it's like extremely weighed down. You can wash it
04:34with like a buildup buster and get all that product out of your hair, like the Viva Curl buildup buster.
04:39Um, but for the most part, you're refreshing with the water bottle. Let's see.
04:45I've been using the curly girl method, which has worked for me before, but lately my hair has been
04:54very limp, very limp. I read something about over moisturizing. How would I know if that's the
05:01problem? So yes, over moisturizing is a thing. Um, so it could be a few different things, whether
05:09your hair is basically it's, it's losing its definition. It's not curling up. There's no
05:15bounce. Um, that means that it's over moisturized. Um, and there's just too much product and protein
05:20in your hair to where it's really, there's no definition. Um, so that's definitely the case
05:25where you would want to wash your hair, um, with like a clarifying shampoo to, to really just
05:30detox, detoxify your scalp, um, and cleanse your hair thoroughly. And, um, I, there's a really
05:37great article on that, that I can also attach to this video, um, where there's a lot more
05:42information, um, about over moisturizing and those signs to really tell that. Um, so if y'all
05:50have any more questions and you really want to get them answered right now, feel free to comment
05:54below and I can answer them for you. Let's see, air dry, then diffuse. I've seen this both ways.
06:05Either let your hair dry 70, 75% and then diffuse or diffuse up 75% and then let air dry. What's
06:13the difference? So personally, I don't diffuse, I just air dry, but that's my personal, um, experience
06:22because I have medium porosity hair. So it only takes my hair about 30 to 45 minutes
06:27to dry. Um, so I don't diffuse. Nikki, what would you say about that? Do you diffuse?
06:35Uh, when I have time, I feel like diffusing takes forever. Yeah. And that's my thing too.
06:39But then again, it kind of depends on your, it all goes back to your hair type. Cause some
06:43people, um, what is it like low porosity? It takes their hair like low porosity or high porosity?
06:50Yeah. Yeah. So low porosity takes forever for your hair to dry. So then you would probably
06:56just diffuse it for 30 minutes and you'll be good. Um, but once again, I think that's more
07:00of a hair type question. Um, just depending on your type of hair and hair porosity. And if
07:07y'all have any more questions, you already know you can drop them below and we will answer
07:11them for you, but we want to hear from y'all. So we want to know, um, what are your biggest
07:17hair concerns and what do you want us to answer and help you? Um, like, like how can we really
07:23help you along your hair journey? Do you need more product recommendations? Do you need hairstyles?
07:28Tips to refresh? Um, are you looking for a stylist in your area? Like really talk to us in the
07:34comments and let us know that so that we can really help you along your journey. Because
07:38we all know that all of our journeys are different, but we want to make sure that we're also serving
07:41you in the best way possible. Okay. What's the question? So steaming is, it's on the basis
07:57of like deep conditioning your hair. So it's more of a basis of about a once a month you
08:02steam your hair and that's really, um, uh, so yeah, I would definitely say steaming your
08:09hair once a month. I'm going to also look up some more information on that. Um, of course
08:16the, what, I don't know how you pronounce it, but it's like the, the cure do, how do you
08:21say that? The cure do, yeah. The cure do is like the most popular one. Um, and really what
08:27that do, really what the cure do does, it's a sustained therapy. So it's like opening up
08:32your hair follicles just to allow more absorption of the moisture to your hair. So it really just
08:38helps, you can do that primarily for like deep conditioning purposes. So to answer your question,
08:43you can do it once a month with like the cure do, um, where you are really getting that moisture
08:48back into your hair. Okay. Can you tell me, um, what was the girl who answered, who asked that?
09:04Um, Shantiva Keys. Hey Shantiva Keys. So if you can tell me your hair type, I can definitely drop
09:12some recommendations for you for some good moisturizers. Um, because depending on your
09:18hair type, like if you're a three or a four, um, or even low, low or high porosity, that also helps
09:25me, give you some good recommendations on, uh, some good creams and moisturizers.
09:31Okay. We have another question. Okay. We have another question. Let me, let me hear it.
09:35I run three mushrooms and jump into the team's honor. I'm in a human environment. What can I do
09:41about food? Yeah, that's, that's a good one. Um, so, hmm. So do you do, what's her name?
09:50Uh, Jacqueline. Hey Jacqueline. So we got your question about frizz while you are being active
09:56and working out in this sauna. Um, now do you like wear a hat or like a scarf or anything
10:04to prevent like your hair from getting wet? Um, and also too, do you also wear protective
10:11styles? Maybe, I know that also helps like temporarily. Um, but I think another suggestion
10:16too is maybe incorporating mousses and gels in your regimen. Um, and then maybe pulling your hair
10:21up into a, uh, a high pony or a pineapple before you work out. Um, and then just refreshing it,
10:29um, with like a leave-in or even water after you work out. Shantiva says she believes she has a three
10:36color. Okay. So Shantiva, I have a few really good, um, moisturize, uh, moisturize that I can definitely
10:47recommend for you. Um, I have, I put up this list because there's just so many and she's the one
10:54that says she doesn't like shade moisture, right? Okay. So shade moisture did pop up. Um, let's see.
11:00So let's see the curls. So a few of our favorites that there's like a whole article about 15 favorite,
11:1115 best moisturizer and products. I can also share that in the link. Uh, but one of them is the
11:16Allocaine Naturals, uh, Moisture Rich Hair Parfait. Um, another one of my favorites that I'm thinking
11:24about too is the Miel Organics Twisting Souffle. Um, and I like that one because it's really, it's
11:32very, very moisturizing and it smells amazing. It's really, really creamy. Um, honestly, I don't use that
11:38many moisturizers. I use more gels and mousses and then I apply a finishing oil to my hair. Um, because
11:45I noticed that when I was using moisturizer, it actually started weighing my hair down and it wasn't
11:52giving me the definition or volume that I was looking for. Um, I'm trying to see what
11:57other moisturizers. Hmm. I do also like the, um, the ORS Smoothie Cream. That's another good
12:06one. There's a Miss, there's a Miss Jessie's Leave-In Condish. Um, and Carol's Daughter, um,
12:14Hair Milk is also another one. And then the Main Choice also has a really great hair milk that
12:20I like as well. So those are some options for you. And what I can do is I can also, uh,
12:24just share this link out where it's listing all the products so that's easier to get to.
12:27Hey Nadia, so we've got your question about, um, some haircut advice for extremely long curly
12:43hair. So, um, I would say long layers would be a start. Uh, but then again, it's all about
12:53your preference. Are you wanting to go shorter or do you like your length? Um, and you know,
12:58are you trying to frame your face? Do you want like a more shorter cut, like a more to really frame
13:02your jawline area? Um, or do you want to really keep that volume and keep it long? So if you're
13:08wanting to keep it long and keep the volume, then I would definitely go with more of a long,
13:11a long layer cut. Yeah. So what's her name? Uh, Trisha. Okay. Hey, Trisha. So we got your,
13:27we got your, um, your question about swimming. So, um, we definitely, we know that's a theme right
13:33now. Everybody is in the summertime fun. We are so here for it. Um, and we talked about that earlier
13:38is there's a few, I think the best practice for that is about prepping your hair before and during
13:45and after. So before, um, it's really important to prep your hair. So you'd want to prep your hair
13:50by detangling it and then adding a leave in and then twisting it, braiding it, putting it in the
13:58bun or even wearing a hat or a scarf. And then, um, and then afterwards you would definitely
14:06cleanse it and then deep condition to really get your hair, um, you know, to really just,
14:14just to get all of that, um, moisture back into your hair because we already know that that chlorine
14:19is really drying to our curls. Um, so what I can do is I can also just share some, some deep conditioners
14:26in the comments with you so you can take those out. Uh, Jacqueline said, no hat or stuff, twist right
14:33now, but thinking about turning this long to tear loose. Thinking about turning this long to tear loose,
14:39does that mean like she's going to be cutting it? I think she's going to be taking it out of twist.
14:44Okay. Um, yeah, I've learned that in the summertime, y'all, the best bet really is protective styles
14:51in braids because, um, dealing with your hair at the pool and the beach can get, it can be,
14:57it can be a lot to handle. Um, but it's not, it's not like we can't do it. It's just, it definitely
15:03involves more work. So it kind of goes back to, you do have to prep it before and after. Um, so yeah,
15:08if you want to keep doing your twist or do a bun, um, that's your best bet or girl, try some braids.
15:14Definitely try that too. See, see how that works out.
15:17Hey, so I would definitely say the layers will help you for sure. The, the layers were kind of,
15:35they'll give you that volume and, um, cause I feel like when your hair is all one length,
15:40it just doesn't really give you that oomph that you're looking for. Um, so yeah, start with layers.
15:44And you know what? I just interviewed one of our local hairstylists, April. Um, and that is our
15:50latest article. So I can even share that with you because she gave some really great tips,
15:55um, about color, but also about, um, about like layering your hair and things like that too.
16:01So I can share that with you.
16:05Thank you. It always handles and thank you to keep everything. Thank you.
16:10Awesome. Well, thank you ladies for tuning in.

16:23Is that everything? Cool. Well, thank you girls so much for tuning in today.
16:29Um, feel free to comment below and we'll answer them next week.
