00:53Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela. We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:02Venezuela commemorates the 34th anniversary of National Dignity Day when commander Hugo Chavez led a civic and military rebellion that later became the Bolivarian Revolution.
01:25Over three decades ago, on February 4th of 1992, the Bolivarian Revolutionary Movement 200, led by commander Chavez, rose up against the prevailing neoliberal model.
01:37On this day, Venezuela and its various political and social movements commemorated that civil-military rebellion that awoke national awareness in the face of the exploitative system of the Carlos Andres Pérez era.
01:51Thirty-four years after that milestone, the cry for freedom remains alive, calling on new generations to defend sovereignty and build a nation-based and Bolivarian knowledge and ethics.
02:03Venezuelans commemorate National Dignity Day as well this February 4th on the 34th anniversary of a civil-military rebellion led by commander Hugo Chavez that later became the Bolivarian Revolution.
02:22From the 4th anniversary of a civil-military rebellion in Caracas in Caracas, where the remains of commander Hugo Chavez-Fria's rest, authorities paid homage to civil-military rebellion that awoke national awareness 34 years ago.
02:36The event was attended by the Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, and also 4F combatant Diosdado Cabello, who recalled the teaching of commander Chavez on how to turn apparent defeat into triumphs.
02:50Thirty-four years after that milestone, the cry for freedom remains alive, calling on new generations to defend sovereignty and build a nation based on Bolivarian knowledge and ethics.
03:02And in this context, the Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, expressed the need to strengthen collective awareness as a necessity in the face of the situation Venezuela is currently experiencing.
03:20Venezuela is undoubtedly going through a very difficult time for the country, very difficult, which demands everything from us all, which demands that we all raise the levels of awareness that Ameliac speaks of.
03:43Our people have it. Our people have it. Our people have it. But that leadership must raise the levels of consciousness. There can be no room for individualism, for personalism. What this historical moment demands is maximum unity of the revolutionary force.
04:01Also, the Minister of Defense commemorates the 34th anniversary of the 1992 military rebellion, a moment that marked the beginning of the Bolivarian Revolution of Commander Hugo Chavez.
04:16In a statement, the Ministry highlighted on that early morning of February 4th, 1992, when a brave soldier changed the course of history by declaring the honourable and major phrase,
04:30Unfortunately, unfortunately for now, our objectives have not been achieved. It was with this civil-military rebellion inspired by the most advanced ideas of Bolivar, Simón Rodríguez and Zamora that social awareness was awakened to steer the Republic toward a new destiny.
04:49We reaffirm our commitment to continue refining the Bolivarian project, currently led by our commander-in-chief, Del Cieloino Rodríguez Gómez, as in times past the sons and daughters of Bolívar and Chavez, with their honour and dignity intact.
05:05And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and much more.
05:18We'll be right back, stay with us.
05:35Welcome back to From the South, and we go to Venezuela, where the people mobilized on January 4th in the aftermath of the US attack on Caracas and the kidnapping of President Maduro and first combatant Celia Flores.
05:51The people expressed a rejection to the imperial aggression taken to the streets of cities across the nation and demanding the return of the Bolivarian couple.
06:00Our correspondent Paola Dragnik brings us more details today with the second chapter of the series The Signal of Victory.
06:07It was a different dawn in Venezuela, and the first rays of the sun began to show the magnitude of the material damage, and worse still, to be able to see the light of the sun.
06:32The sun began to show the magnitude of the material damage, and worse still, to put a human face on the imperial attack.
06:39Even I wanted to stay in my position, but they told me to come here because I was injured.
06:49Civilists and military heroes who were facing the historical colonial violence that today dealt the hardest blow.
06:58Niklas, as his people call him, has been kidnapped together with the First Lady.
07:03Without knowing if the attacks would continue, the first rays of sunshine also brought the people out into the streets.
07:10This is the president we want, and we want him back, because here is a fighting people ready to fight and rescue their president.
07:22So make no mistake.
07:25AIつ y enrique, es la coordinación de la Generalitat de
07:32Esther.
07:35El pueblo.
07:36Between horror and tenderness, the people began to surround the Miraflores presidential palace.
07:42At 7 in the morning, the Ordaneta avenue in Caracas was filling up.
07:48Scumbag gringos, you won't get through, you won't win, the Bolivarian people are
07:59sordering on and will defend their dignity, their identity and their land.
08:04What they're doing today to Nicolás Maduro and Celia Flores, they can do to anyone,
08:09they can do it to any country in Latin America, in the world, simply because they want to
08:13steal its resources.
08:15Here is Caracas, here is Venezuela, because we are here.
08:20You are in Barcelona, you are in Maracay, you are in Ciudad Bolívar.
08:23And in every corner of the country.
08:33We say from here that we will be in the streets, we will be permanently mobilized,
08:37because no one here is giving up, no one here is bending, don't need it with us.
08:42We are furious and we won our president.
08:46A call that within hours began to spread across the planet, Rome, Milan, New York, Mexico,
08:53New York, Mexico, Varsovia, Costa Rica, Ireland, Cuba and Paris, just to name a few.
09:01In each of these places, there was always a Venezuelan to reject the brutality of foreign interference.
09:10The narrative that has been built up since 2020, based on the false claim that Venezuela is ruled by drug cartels, has no footing whatsoever.
09:25Not only because of the actual facts, but even according to the DEA's own reports.
09:32La señora Machado no juega ningún papel en nuestra política.
09:36Mrs. Machado plays no role in our politics, fortunately.
09:39That woman is a die-hard fascist.
09:42El nido del fascismo.
09:44And that is exactly what they don't want in their territory.
09:48The Bolivarian project is a doctrine deeply rooted in the Venezuelan people, embodied first by Hugo Chavez and now by Nicolás Maduro.
09:58The Bolivarian revolution will not fall because this is a revolution that has been going on since 1805, when Francisco de Miranda raised our flag for the emancipation of our America, for the emancipation of our Bolivarian land.
10:14Perhaps that is why it is incomprehensible that just hours after a bombing, there is neither chaos nor fear, but quite the opposite.
10:24This is a warrior people. We are not afraid of what they did. We are staying here. We are going to defend this land with our blood. We are going to defend it that way.
10:36And also, in that way, we defend, while part of the people mobilized early, helping chance reach every corner attacked by the Empire.
10:48To support my fellow citizens, because this war that Trump has waged on us here in Venezuela is nothing more than his desire to get his hands on our country's oil.
10:59Perhaps they hope to unleash widespread panic after the attacks, cause alarm, maybe even a popular uprising or internal division. But no, none of that happened.
11:11Let them not believe that because they see the streets quiet as they are now is because we are defeated, quite the contrary. This is just the beginning. So let's prepare with calm and wisdom.
11:24And so it was. Peace was maintained. These images were captured by international news agencies on the very 4th of January. People stocked up on supplies in supermarkets in peace. This was the situation in Plaza Sucre and in the densely populated Vedatic.
11:42And while the marches demanded the return of the President and the First Lady multiplied, the Defense Council provided details in Glasgow had left clear instructions if the direct attack took place after 28 weeks of US military harassment, a decree of external commotion began to take effect.
12:05Our father Liberator said it in the letter from Jamaica. The bail has been turned. We have seen the light and they want to return us to darkness. The chains have been broken. We have been free and our enemies want to enslave us again. If there is one thing that the Venezuelan people and this country are very clear about is that we will never be slaves again and we will never be a colony again of any empire.
12:33If the people did not leave the streets by day, they held videos by night. The people's demand is unanimous. Bring them back alive. The Venezuelan people are in the streets.
12:56Now the Bolivarian and Chavista people are here to stay. Trump, give us back our President Nicolás Maduro. You are a thief, a fascist and a pedophile.
13:17A popular anger that was growing unstoppably.
13:24Next morning, Edgar Parra was still there.
13:30What they want is to take over Venezuela. It's all because that is their ultimate goal.
13:39And she was still there too, 24 hours later. But they weren't the only ones. The imperial attack had unleashed the fury of the Venezuelans who took to the streets like this.
13:52The rallies were nonstop day after day. We will be waiting for them here. We will be in the streets every day demanding the return of our President Nicolás Maduro. We shall overcome.
14:13The gringos and empire will fall down. No empire can last forever.
14:28The Venezuelans. The Venezuelan people didn't stop. And on the first Monday of 2026, the new legislative period began. But it was never like that with the people outside resisting.
14:41We demand the return of our President Nicolás Maduro. Because here we have a resolute people. A people who defend sovereignty and constitutional law.
14:55And it was literal. And it was literally. So they advanced to the National Assembly, whose building was surrounded by the people.
15:03Inside, the empty chair of Congresswoman Celia Flores seemed to inspire even more strength. And that scene was the beginning of it all.
15:11Marking a day that showed the world the political, civil and military unity of Venezuela.
15:17Despite the brutal aggressions, democracy did not stop. This new assembly is the one that will have to implement the laws of a country whose President has been kidnapped.
15:32And these are their faces. Deputies who represent the people in a popular assembly that promotes participatory democracy. And before which, Delcy Rodriguez was sworn in as acting President.
15:44Delcy Rodriguez.
15:47I come in pain over the kidnapping of two heroes who are being held hostage in the United States of America. President Nicolás Maduro and first combatant and first lady of this country, Celia Flores.
16:03I come in pain, but I must say that I also come with the honor of swearing in the name of all Venezuelan men. And in the name of all Venezuelan women, I come to swear by our father liberator, Simón Bolívar, who is the guide and historical beacon of Venezuela's future, whose liberating blood runs through the veins of all Venezuelans.
16:27Those who are determined will not leave the streets until they see Nicolás and Celia return without stopping the construction of that Bolivarian homeland for which they resist and work so hard.

17:15Welcome back to From the South.
17:19United States President Donald Trump lashed out at a journalist after she questioned him about survivors of the late financial and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
17:29During a press conference held on Tuesday, CNN's chief White House correspondent, Caitlin Collins, pressed the head of state on the recently released Epstein files, highlighting the dissatisfaction of survivors with the extensive redactions.
17:45The move sparked a fury response from Trump, who dismissed concerns about transparency and called Collins the worst reporter.
17:54The incident became the latest in a series of Trump's verbal attacks on female reporters during his second term.
18:00Let's recall that many Epstein survivors insist that the Justice Department owes the public and the victims greater transparency, as blacked-out witness interviews have fueled cover-up suspicions.
18:13In this context, Trump continues to deny his links to the sex offender, despite his name appearing repeatedly in the files.
18:20What would you say to the survivors who feel they haven't got justice?
18:28You are the worst reporter. CNN has no ratings because of people like you.
18:33You know, she's a young woman. I don't think I've ever seen you smile. I've known you for ten years.
18:38I don't think I've ever seen a smile on your face.
18:40Well, I'm asking you about survivors. You know why? You know why you're not smiling?
18:43Because you know you're not telling the truth. And you're a very dishonest organization, and they should be ashamed of you.
18:50I think it's really time for the country to get onto something else, really.
18:53You know, now that nothing came out about me, other than it was a conspiracy against me, literally, by Epstein and other people.
19:02But I think it's time now for the country to maybe get onto something else.
19:07But what would you say to people who feel like they haven't gotten justice, Mr. President?
19:10Something that people care about.
19:12Hi, Katie.
19:13In other news, on Tuesday, Cuba's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Fernández de Cosío, denied that the island government is setting up negotiations with the United States.
19:23The administration of Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel denied statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he asserted that his government is currently engaged in dialogue with the island's leadership.
19:37In this context, the Cuban government affirmed that messages have been exchanged with the White House since the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on January 3rd,
19:47emphasizing that it would be a mistake to say that a bilateral negotiation is being designed because that dialogue has not begun.
19:55The Cuban government also denied that there could be indirect contacts through intermediaries, such as Mexico or the Vatican.
20:07Also, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping expressed their support for maintaining the current level of cooperation with Venezuela and Cuba.
20:21During a video conference this Wednesday, both leaders emphasized the importance of cooperation between Russia and China on international platforms.
20:30President Putin stressed that the foreign policy alliance between Moscow and Beijing continues to be an important stabilizing factor in a context of growing turbulence in the world.
20:42China's position is in line with that of Russia, which, since the fact became known, has condemned the U.S. aggression against Caracas and expresses support for the Cuban government and people.
20:53The Mexican government confirmed its intention to seek diplomatic channels to continue helping the Cuban people in the face of U.S. tariff threats.
21:09On cooperation with Cuba, President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that Mexico exported nearly 500 million U.S. dollars in oil during 2025, despite warnings from the United States.
21:22Sheinbaum recalled that the energy relationship with Cuba is not a recent phenomenon as the United States has historically supported the island, even under previous administrations.
21:32She also assured that her administration is evaluating all diplomatic options to maintain its support for the Cuban people without compromising Mexican interests.
21:59On Wednesday, as well, Russian, Ukrainian and U.S. delegations hold a second round of peace negotiations in the United Arab Emirates.
22:08The previous round, held on January 23rd and the 24th, marked the first trilateral format and was described by all sides as very constructive.
22:18Following the first round of talks, negotiators acknowledged that territorial issues remain the main obstacle to a peace agreement.
22:25Russian President Vladimir Putin has reputely said that the People's Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye regions,
22:34which joined the Federation as a result of referendums in the fall of 2022, are now part of Russia.
22:40Moscow also maintains that Ukraine's aspirations to join NATO and the proposed development and deployment of Western troops are unacceptable.
22:50Also in this context, in Russia, Ukrainian artillery attacks in the province of Kherson left four civilians dead and 13 others injured.
23:05The Kiev regime and the Kiev offensive focused on residential areas and public service centres showing the criminal nature of Ukrainian forces.
23:15Local Governors Vladimir Saldo pointed out the direct impact on a public service centre that claimed the lives of three people, as well as an artillery attack on a house that killed an 88-year-old woman.
23:30In this context, the emergency services provided assistance to the 13 injured and assessed the damage to civil infrastructure.
23:37The local government also denounced that the constant fire over the last days seriously compromises safety in multiple settlements in Kherson.
23:47And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
