00:00Venezuelans commemorate national dignity days February 4th on the 34th anniversary of the
00:15Civil-Military Rebellion led by Commander Hugo Chavez that later became the Bolivar Revolution.
00:19The presidents of Russia and China expressed their support for maintaining the current level
00:26of cooperation with Venezuela and Cuba. And on Wednesday, Russia and Ukraine and U.S.
00:34delegations hold a second round of peace negotiations in the United Arab Emirates.
00:38Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from De Lesos Studios in Havana,
00:50Cuba. We begin with the news.
00:56Venezuelans commemorate National Dignity Day this February 4th on the 34th anniversary of a Civil-Military
01:09Rebellion led by Commander Hugo Chavez that later became the Bolivarian Revolution. From the 4F
01:14Mountain Barracks in Caracas, where the remains of Commander Hugo Chavez free as rest, authorities
01:20paid homage to the Civil-Military Rebellion that awoke national awareness 34 years ago. The event
01:25was attended by the Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, who recalled
01:29the teachings of Commander Chavez on how to turn apparent defeats into triumphs. 34 years
01:35after that milestone, the cry for freedom remains alive, calling on new generations to defend
01:40sovereignty and build the nation based on Bolivarian knowledge and ethics.
01:44This is the January 23rd neighborhood where the mountain barracks are located and where National
01:54Dignity Day was born. That moment in Venezuelan history when Hugo Chavez led a Civil-Military Rebellion
02:01to overthrow the then-President Carlos Andres Pérez.
02:08For example, the Venezuelan people were a surprise, but a surprise that was in some way foreseeable.
02:20Why? Because the government of Carlos Andres Pérez was already going through a huge crisis
02:28at that time. There were daily protests and the government turned a blind eye, turning a
02:37deaf ear to the terrible economic situation of corruption and instability.
02:43The mismanagement of the oil boom of the 1970s and 1980s under the presidency of Carlos Andres
02:50Pérez forced him to take unpopular measures, such as increasing the price of fuel, urban
02:55transportation and interest rates, while calling for the understanding of the Venezuelan people.
03:00If I chose the easy way out by trying to avoid the difficulties and hide the reality, all
03:12Venezuelans would respond with positive understanding. If we come together, as I am doing now, to
03:22build a country capable of standing on its own two feet.
03:27But the response was not what was expected. The population responded with protests and looting
03:32of stores in search of food. The government responded by deploying the army.
03:37Faced with this social discontent, the people saw in the figure of a young Hugo Chavez a beacon of hope.
03:47And it served to foster a hope that was not necessarily visible at that moment in terms of the elections,
03:57but rather a hope that there were sectors very concerned about what was happening and that in some ways wanted a radical change that was necessary at that time in the country. A radical change that came to pass after the 1998 elections with the triumph of commander Hugo Chavez FrĂas.
04:22The military mobilization arrived at the Miraflores Palace at that moment, but it did not have the desired result as Hugo Chavez himself acknowledged.
04:31Unfortunately for now, the objectives we set for ourselves were not achieved in the capital city.
04:41He was imprisoned for two years. Upon his release, he participated in the 1999 elections, which he won by a large margin. As president, he called for the prevention of a new armed incursion, but with the following warning.
04:54We don't want any more rebellions. We don't want any more rebellions. I told my brothers in arms. I went to the alma mater and said that it must never happen again. But let there never be another February 27th. Let the people never again be deprived of the right to life.
05:19Because if this continues to happen, no one can guarantee that another day tomorrow or the day after another unwanted event will occur like the events of 1989 or 1992.
05:38The so-called Caracasos were a response to the measures that at the time suffocated the population. And that is how now these streets of the January 23rd neighborhood capture all the meaning derived from the mobilization of the civil military union known as National Dignity Day.
05:57Now for our first break coming up, remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesu English where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and much more.
06:05We'll be right back. Stay with us.
06:06Welcome back.
06:27The Venezuelan people mobilized on January 4th in the aftermath of the U.S. attack on Caracas and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and first combatant Celia Flores.
06:36The people expressed their rejection to the imperial action taken to the streets of cities across the nation and demanding the return of the Bolivarian couple.
06:43Our correspondent Paola Dragnik brings us more details with the second chapter of the series, The Signal of Victory.
06:49It was a different dawn in Venezuela and the first rays of the sun began to show the magnitude of the material damage and worse still,
07:17to put a human face on the imperial attack.
07:24Even I wanted to stay in my position, but they told me to come here because I was injured.
07:31Civilian and military heroes who are facing the historical colonial violence that today dealt the hardest blow.
07:39Nicolás, as his people call him, has been kidnapped together with the first lady.
07:44Without knowing if the attacks would continue, the first rays of sunshine also brought the people out into the streets.
07:51This is the president we want and we want him back because here is a fighting people ready to fight and rescue their president.
08:03So make no mistake.
08:06Like khi Chris Casey it.
08:07This is Vietnam.
08:08Cardi Andreaka
08:09Que Maduro.
08:10Que viva.
08:11El pueblo unido.
08:12Jaman será vencido.
08:13El pueblo
08:15Do y
08:22Flores Presidential Palace. At 7 in the morning, the Ordoneta Avenue in Caracas was filling up.
08:33Scumbag gringos, you won't get through, you won't win. The Bolivarian people are
08:40sordering on and will defend their dignity, their identity and their land.
08:47What they're doing today to Nicolás Maduro and Celia Flores, they can do to anyone,
08:51they can do it to any country in Latin America and the world simply because they want to steal
08:55its resources. Here is Caracas, here is Venezuela because we are here, you are in Barcelona,
09:02you are in Maracay, you are in Ciudad BolĂvar and in every quarter of the country.
09:14We say from here that we will be in the streets, we will be permanently mobilized because no one
09:20here is giving up, no one here is bending, don't needle with us. We are furious and you won our
09:25president. A call that within hours began to spread across the planet, Rome, Milan, New York,
09:34Mexico, New York, Mexico, Varsovia, Costa Rica, Ireland, Cuba and Paris just to name a few.
09:43In each of these places there was always a Venezuelan to reject the brutality of foreign
09:51interference. The narrative that has been built up since 2020 based on the false claim that Venezuela
10:02is ruled by drug cartels has no footing whatsoever, not only because of the actual facts,
10:10but even according to the DEA's own reports.
10:12La señora Machado no juega ningĂşn papel en nuestra polĂtica. Mrs. Machado plays no role in our
10:19politics, fortunately. That woman is a die-hard fascist. El nido del fascismo.
10:26And that is exactly what they don't want in their territory. The Bolivarian project is a doctrine
10:32deeply rooted in the Venezuelan people, embodied first by Hugo Chavez and now by Nicolás Maduro.
10:38The Bolivarian revolution will not fall because this is a revolution that has been going on since 1805,
10:47when Francisco de Miranda raised our flag for the emancipation of our America,
10:52for the emancipation of our Bolivarian land. Perhaps that is why it is incomprehensible that
11:00just hours after a bombing there is neither chaos nor fear, but quite the opposite.
11:06This is a warrior people. We are not afraid of what they did. We are staying here. We are going to
11:14defend this land with our blood. We are going to defend it that way. And also in that way,
11:21because it is not just about military defense. While part of the people mobilized early,
11:26helping can reach every corner attacked by the Empire.
11:29We support my fellow citizens because this war that Trump has waged on us here in Venezuela is
11:36nothing more than his desire to get his hands on our country's oil. Perhaps they hope to unleash
11:43widespread panic after the attacks, cause alarm, maybe even a popular uprising or internal division.
11:50But no, none of that happened.
11:54Let them not believe that because they see the streets quiet as they are now,
11:58it's because we are defeated. Quite the contrary. This is just the beginning. So let's prepare
12:04with calm and wisdom.
12:07And so it was. Peace was maintained. These images were captured by international news agencies
12:13on the very 4th of January. People stocked up on supplies in supermarkets in peace. This was the
12:20situation in Plaza Sucre and in the densely populated Titanic. And while the marches demanding
12:28the return of the president and the first lady multiplied, the defense council provided details.
12:35The class leader had left clear instructions if the direct attack took place after 28 weeks of U.S.
12:42military harassment. A decree of external commotion began to take a test.
12:50Our father Liberator said it in the letter from Jamaica. The veil has been turned. We have seen the
12:57light and they want to return us to darkness. The chains have been broken. We have been free and our
13:04enemies want to enslave us again. If there is one thing that the Venezuelan people and this country are
13:10very clear about is that we will never be slaves again and we will never be a colony again of any empire
13:17of any kind.
13:18If the people did not leave the streets by day, they held videos by night. The people's demand is unanimous.
13:32The people's demand is the most popular. Bring them back alive. The Venezuelan people are in the streets.
13:39Now the Bolivarian and Chavista people are here to stay.
13:54Trump, give us back our president, Nicolás Maduro.
13:57You are a thief, a fascist, and a pedophile.
14:00A popular anger that was growing unstoppably.
14:06Next morning, Edgar Parra was still there.
14:13What they want is to take over Venezuela, his oil, because that is their ultimate goal.
14:23And she was still there too, 24 hours later.
14:27But they weren't the only ones.
14:29The imperial attack had unleashed the fury of the Venezuelans who took to the streets
14:33like this.
14:34The rallies were nonstop, day after day.
14:41We will be waiting for them here.
14:43We will be in the streets every day demanding the return of our president, Nicolás Maduro.
14:49We shall overcome.
14:52The gringos and the empire will fall down.
14:56No empire can last forever.
14:58The people of the Venezuelan people didn't stop.
15:10The Venezuelan people didn't stop.
15:12And on the first Monday of 2026, the new legislative period began.
15:17But it was never like that with the people outside resisting.
15:21We demand the return of our president, Nicolás Maduro, because here we have a resolute people.
15:30A people who defend sovereignty and constitutional law.
15:36And it was literally.
15:38And it was literally.
15:39So they advanced to the National Assembly, whose building was surrounded by the people.
15:44Inside, the empty chair of Congresswoman Celia Flores seemed to inspire even more strength.
15:51And that scene was the beginning of it all.
15:53Marking a day that showed the world the political, civil and military unity of Venezuela.
15:59Despite the brutal aggressions, democracy did not stop.
16:07This new assembly is the one that will have to implement the laws of a country whose president has been kidnapped.
16:13And these are their faces.
16:15Deputies who represent the people in a popular assembly that promotes participatory democracy.
16:21And before which, Delcy Rodriguez was sworn in as acting president.
16:26I come in pain over the kidnapping of two heroes who are being held hostage in the United States of America.
16:37President Nicolás Maduro and first combatant and first lady of this country, Celia Flores.
16:44I come in pain, but I must say that I also come with the honor of swearing in the name of all Venezuelan men.
16:52And in the name of all Venezuelan women, I come to swear by our father liberator, SimĂłn BolĂvar, who is the guide and historical beacon of Venezuela's future, whose liberating blood runs through the veins of all Venezuelans.
17:11Those who are determined will not leave the streets until they see Nicolás and Celia return, without stopping the construction of that Bolivarian homeland for which they resisted and worked so hard.

17:42Final break. Don't go away.
17:44Welcome back.
17:58United States President Donald Trump lashed out at a journalist after she questioned him after survivors of the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
18:06During a press conference held on Tuesday, CNN's Chief White House Correspondent, Caitlin Collins, pressed the head of state on the recently released Epstein files,
18:15outlined the dissatisfaction of survivors with the extensive redactions.
18:18The move sparked a viral response from who dismissed concerns about transparency and called Collins, the worst reporter.
18:25The incident became the latest in a series of Trump's verbal attacks on female reporters during his second term.
18:30It is recalled that many Epstein survivors insist that the Justice Department owes the public and the victims greater transparency,
18:37as blacked-out witness interviews have fueled cover-up suspicions.
18:41In this context, Trump continues to deny his links to sex offenders despite his name appearing repeatedly in the files.
18:51What would you say to the survivors who feel they haven't gotten justice?
18:58You are the worst reporter. CNN has no ratings because of people like you.
19:03You know, she's a young woman. I don't think I've ever seen you smile. I've known you for 10 years.
19:08I don't think I've ever seen a smile on your face.
19:10Well, I'm asking you about survivors.
19:11You know why? You know why you're not smiling? Because you know you're not telling the truth.
19:15And you're a very dishonest organization, and they should be ashamed of you.
19:20I think it's really time for the country to get onto something else, really.
19:24Now that nothing came out about me, other than it was a conspiracy against me, literally, by Epstein and other people.
19:32But I think it's time now for the country to maybe get onto something else.
19:37But what would you say to people who feel like they haven't gotten justice, Mr. President?
19:40Something that people care about.
19:42Like Katie.
19:44And on Tuesday, Cuba's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Fernández de Cozillo,
19:48denied that the island government is setting up negotiations with the United States.
19:52The administration of Cuban President Miguel Diaz cannot deny the statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump,
19:57in which he asserted that his government is currently engaged in dialogue with the island's leadership.
20:03In this context, the Cuban government affirmed that messages have been exchanged with the White House
20:07since the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on January 3rd,
20:11emphasizing that it would be a mistake to say that a bilateral negotiation is being designed
20:15because that dialogue has not begun.
20:18The Cuban government also denied that there could be indirect contacts through intermediaries,
20:24such as Mexico or the Vatican.
20:27And Russian President Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping expressed their support
20:36for maintaining the current line of cooperation with Venezuela and Cuba.
20:39During a conference this Wednesday, both leaders emphasized the importance of cooperation
20:44between Russia and China on international platforms.
20:47President Putin stressed that the foreign policy alliance between Moscow and Beijing continues to be
20:52an important stabilizing factor in a context of growing turbulence in the world.
20:56China's position is in line with that of Russia, which since the facts became known,
21:00has condemned the U.S. segregation against Caracas and expressed its support for the Cuban government and people.
21:05And on Wednesday, Russia, Ukrainian and U.S. delegations hold a second round of peace negotiations in the United Arab Emirates.
21:25The previous round, held on January 23rd and 24th, marked the first trilateral format
21:30and was described by all sides as very constructive.
21:32Following the next round of talks, negotiators acknowledge that territorial issues remain the main obstacle to a peace agreement.
21:38Russian President Biden has repeatedly said the People's Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk,
21:43as well as Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, which joined the federation as a result of referendums in the fall of 2022,
21:49are now part of Russia.
21:51Moscow also maintains that Ukraine's aspiration to join NATO and the proposed deployment of Western troops are unacceptable.
21:57And in Russia, Ukrainian artillery attacks in the province of Kherson left four civilians dead and 13 others injured.
22:11The Kiev offensive focused on residential areas and public service centers, showing the criminal nature of Ukrainian forces.
22:17Local Governor Vladimir Saldo pointed out the direct impact on a public service center that claimed the lives of free people,
22:23as well as an artillery attack on the house that killed an 88-year-old woman.
22:27In this context, emergency services provided assistance to the 13 injured and assessed the damage to civil infrastructure.
22:33The local government also denounced that the constant fire of the last days seriously compromises safety in multiple settlements in Kherson.
22:44And dozens of protests were gathered in front of the Philippine House of Representatives to demand the resignation of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
22:53The protests took place during a legislative hearing to evaluate the validity of multiple impeachment petitions filed against the President for corruption.
23:01Among the accusations is a scandal related to the management of funds for flood control projects, which sparked public outrage.
23:07These protests came at a time when the Philippine political scene is immersed in heated debates over the course of the impeachment complaints
23:14and the possibility of referring them to the next constitutional stage amid political division.
23:24And amid this context of protests, on Wednesday, Filipino legislators dismiss impeachment complaints against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
23:30and Vice President Sara Duterte, citing insufficient substance in the allegations.
23:36The complaints, which were filed by left-wing activists, included charges of large-scale corruption and threats of violence.
23:42These decisions have sparked debates about accountability and political divisions within the House of Representatives dominated by the President's allies.
