00:00Hey everybody, my name is Blake Newby and I am the beauty and style editor here at Essence.
00:13So this is beauty carnival weekend, right? And we know that even though aging is inevitable,
00:18beauty is not defined by a number. But let's keep it real. No matter how much we try to convince
00:23ourselves as we evolve, our skin will too. But we're not stressing. All that means is that we
00:28need to give ourselves a little bit more love and attention. That's why next up, our lovely panel
00:34of ageless beauties are going to give us all the tea about their positive skincare habits with a
00:40little help from our partners at Estee Lauder. By way of Fox Souls Cocktails with Queens, please
00:45welcome actress, model, designer, and on-air personality, Lisa Rae McCoy. Lisa Rae, thank you
00:52so much for joining us. Absolutely. I love talking about skin because I actually love the skin that
00:58I'm in. Well, we're going to talk about it. We're going to talk about it because also by way of Fox
01:03Souls Cocktails with Queens and TGIF, please welcome actress, model, and on-air radio personality,
01:10Claudia Jordan. Thanks for having us, Blake. This is one of my favorite topics, skin, skin, skin.
01:15Perfect. Well, since we have a lot to talk about, I'm going to jump right in. Let's do it. So first,
01:21let's start with each of your relationships with skincare. Would you say that your interest in
01:26skincare and positive skincare habits have always been important or did you have to develop it?
01:32Claudia, I'll start with you. You know, I got lucky as far as genetics are concerned and I know
01:38that probably makes some people mad like, girl, you ain't giving us no tips, but genetics are half
01:43the battle. You still have environment, plays a big role in what you put into your body. So I'm not
01:48going to lie. I really abused myself as far as like sweets, no sleep, and never using sunscreen. Well,
01:55that's a young girl's game. Right now that I'm 48, I have to make sure that there's got to be
02:00sunscreen involved. There's got to be lots of water and, and moisturize it. Every time I clean my face,
02:06the moisturizer goes on within 15 seconds. Like I clean my face and immediately I moisturize and seal
02:12that, you know, um, I don't, I don't fall asleep in makeup anymore. And, and I really make an effort
02:18because, you know, the older you get, the more makeup you wear, you still, it makes you look older,
02:22not younger. So your skin, your base has to be good. So I think that's, it becomes more important
02:27in your skin, you know? So moisturizer, moisturizer, moisturizer, not letting stress, anyone stress you
02:33out, not being a hater and getting out of bad relationships will keep you looking young.
02:38And Lisa Ray, what would you say that your relationship with your skincare has changed and
02:43evolved too? Yes. Cause I learned about sunscreen at an early age because I've always loved the sun
02:51because I just, I, I wasn't a fan of being light-skinned. I'll say that. I always felt
02:57like being kissed by the sun allowed me to have just that little golden bronze feeling of tint on
03:05my face that made me feel fresh, you know? And so I'm still like a sun goddess. I still like
03:10being in the sun. That's saying too much about me. I love that. That feels so sunny, you know,
03:17when it was introduced to us about maybe 20 years ago, I was still on it, you know, before then or
03:22whatever. And being light-skinned black woman, everything shows up on you just like this,
03:28like a pimple, like a scratch, a mark. It's like, hello. It's like, wait. And then you feel so
03:33insecure because it's like, bam, right there. You know what I mean? So I've always liked to play with
03:36makeup. You know what I mean? My mom loved makeup and I would just always look at her in the mirror and
03:41be like, wow. You know what I'm saying? And her, her sisters and stuff and her sisters that have eyes
03:45like me, I would feel like, Ooh, when I get older, I'm going to wear green and I'm going to put those
03:51glasses on too. And I'm going to wear wigs too. And look, look, look at me now. Look at me.
03:56Here you are.
03:56And like what Claudia said, the older that you get, the more I like the fresh face look. We did a show
04:05of Cocktails with Queens with a spa face, fresh face. And we all looked incredible to me because to be
04:12able to really show that, to have the confidence, uh, to be able to, to do that. You know what I
04:18mean? For me spoke value, you know? So I think a little bit of eyebrow, a little bit of mascara and
04:24lip gloss goes a long way. And you all have really personified the term ageless beauty, both of you.
04:30And we know, however, that that's more than skin deep. Claudia just said, don't be a hater.
04:35Don't let nobody stress you out. Like the, the, the, what happens on the inside is just as important
04:39as what's on the outside. So Lisa Ray, what are some personal boundaries for non-negotiables
04:45that contribute to your inner glow? Um, you know what, as much of a no nonsense person that I am,
04:53um, some things has happened this year that has made me take a step back. It made me go,
04:57wait a minute, you can't point the finger or why are you getting so upset or why are you letting that
05:03bother you? Or why are you reacting this way? That is absolutely made me look into self. And so while
05:10I'm on this quest for self-care, self-care is not just only the beauty, uh, salon or the, the,
05:18the beauty of makeup. It is on the inside because your inside needs to be just as beautiful. You know
05:26how you see a person, you go, Oh, but she's so sweet. I wanted to have that as well. You know,
05:32so I've been absolutely learning more about myself and then just stopping myself in my tracks,
05:38not being afraid to be able to grow and learn more and stretch, you know, and to be able to find an
05:44inner peace on dealing with things differently, not being afraid to listen and listen to your peers
05:50and being able to say, Hey, you know what? I was wrong and I'm sorry. And I think that's also part of
05:57maturity of being able to grow up and to be able to deal with things differently because, uh,
06:02if nothing else has been going on this, this, this past year, it has showed the division of us.
06:08And so now we have to get back what we lost plus some. And so shedding off the old purging,
06:16if you will, um, makes for a lighter situation in life because you get beat up out there in life.
06:23You don't want to get beat up at home. And so when I can walk around home, I want to be as light as I
06:28can. Like Claudia said, I'm drinking a lot of water. I'm taking care of myself. I'm moisturizing.
06:33Heck, I even moisturize my lips. I walk around my lip gloss.
06:38You know what I mean? And I like my skin. I like me and I'm accepting of me. And so I'm not hard
06:47on myself. No, no harder than the next person that if I gained six, seven pounds, it's like, okay,
06:52six, seven pounds need to come off. You know what I mean? And so I do that. And so I'm learning to
06:57take things as they come and not make such a big deal of everything. And Claudia, for you,
07:04you're positive. We just spoke about skincare, right? And so your positive skincare habits,
07:10how long did it take for you to get in that groove and figure out the routine that was best for you?
07:14Well, unlike Lisa Ray, I was really bad with sunscreen. So, you know, you can't really do
07:21that. You know, we think, oh, we got all this melanin. Well, we don't have as much as we probably
07:25would like to have. So I remember one time I wore a hat, right? And I took that thing off and I had
07:30a line on my forehead for like five hours. It would not go away. So after that point, I'm like, okay,
07:35I need to like really take more care, better care of this. You know, when you look younger than you
07:39really are, I think you start treating yourself accordingly. Like you don't really take the
07:43precautions that you should. So I realized, okay, I may feel like I look like I'm still in my 30s,
07:47but I'm really not. I'm 48 years old. So yeah, that was a day that I started to like really take
07:53it seriously as far as like making sure to really get that moisture in my skin. And I will say this,
07:58as far as like, not just like an external thing, I really cannot stress enough bad relationships with
08:03friends or with a, you know, a loved one. If it's not making you feel better, it's making you feel worse.
08:09So get out of that thing. And I think we hold on to things because we hear
08:13statistics, how black women, we're more likely to get hit by lightning than get married after 40
08:18years old and all this other nonsense. So we hang on a bad relationships and then it ages you. And
08:22then you break up with him for real. And then you look haggard. I'm not having that. I do not care.
08:27Someone criticized me. Oh, you was only with him for three months. Yup. And guess what? I got my
08:31sanity and I still look young. So negative, bad relationships, negative people. I had a friend that
08:37every time I got on the phone with her, she's always telling me the bad. And I felt like it got on me.
08:41Ladies, stop your friends in their tracks. If they're being negative all the time, be your
08:46friend when they need you, but you got to get off the phone because you will start taking on. That's
08:50what women do, especially black women. We try to save the world and then we get all this stuff on
08:54us. And then before, you know, we like this looking like old ladies and we like, where the youth go?
09:00So I'm not doing it. Sorry. And you know, Lisa Ray, what you said about, like we said with the sun
09:06care, right? You've always been very serious about sun protection. Was there ever any skincare
09:12advice outside of that? However, that you wish that you took more seriously when you were younger?
09:18Yes. You know how they say, like now that you asked, you know how they say this is the most
09:23sensitive set on your body? And it absolutely is. And so when we are taking off our makeup, when you
09:29wear as much makeup as we do, because we're on the set and we're moving around and going and doing
09:33appearances, you taking your makeup off every night. Well, there has to be a routine to that
09:38because if you're doing that every night, you can't be pulling on your skin so much. And so I found
09:43something that really works for me. That's the moisturizer that take off makeup easily that I
09:48don't have to tug on my skin, especially right here because it's sensitive, you know, and those
09:53smile lines right here. I absolutely adore them because that means I've been smiling a lot.
10:02And ladies, you know, before we wrap, like we don't have enough, a whole lot of time, even though I
10:06could talk to you all all day. What is a personal gem that you all can share with the audience about how
10:12they can grow to love their skin? Claudia, we'll start with you.
10:17Accepting your life, accepting yourself, the good and the bad. You know what? You made mistakes in
10:22your life. So what? We all do. And stop comparing yourself to the next person. They have their demons
10:26too. They might just be better at hiding it. And the minute you like stop comparing yourself to the
10:30next person, the better you'll look at yourself and be like, you know what? I'm not so bad.
10:34Cause I used to believe everything that all the negative stuff people would say. I'm like,
10:38am I really like that? Do I need a nose job? Do I need to get my lips done? Do I need to do this?
10:42And that can drive you crazy. Guess what? Block them all out. Cause they got their issues too.
10:47And the insecurities and just be like, you know what? I'm okay. And that's not being arrogant.
10:52I'm beautiful. Actually. There's not, that's not being arrogant.
10:56Yeah, I agree. And I, and I think I would say too, just to play devil's advocate, because that's
11:03always what I do is that if you don't like the skin that you're in nowadays, you can absolutely do
11:09something about it because there's routines that, that can happen on a weekly basis. You can have
11:16facials, you can have microdermabrasions, you can have Botox, you can have fillers, you can
11:22absolutely do something different, but you have to keep it up. You know what I mean? It's just like
11:27any type of any surgery that you get, people get lipo and then they blow back up. No, no, no. You got to
11:32keep it together. Then I could tell you to do. So there is a way to be able to love yourself more.
11:38If you're looking in the mirror and not liking it, you want to brighten up your skin, use more
11:43collagen, more vitamin C, get in the sun and have vitamin D. There are things that you can do to
11:48alter that. So you can feel better about yourself and then don't care what anybody else say. People
11:53do that. You may not have it genetically. You may need a little help and go ahead, get that help.
11:58It's okay. What I've taken away is that inner peace, whatever makes you happy, whatever makes
12:04you happy. And ladies, before I go, there's a drink on, I won't say the brand, but you can get
12:11this collagen drink, go on eBay, whatever, a cap full of it a day. It actually helped me restore
12:17some collagen in my face. I took it for a few months. I remember being at an event and I saw Jamie
12:23Fox out at the Playboy Mansion. This was like 10 years ago. And he says, would you been taking some
12:27pretty pills? And I knew that that thing was working. I was like, okay, so it must be
12:32working.
12:32You have absolutely looked the same since I met you. I always tell her that all the time.
12:40And I've seen it without makeup. I mean, more than just on TV. You know what I mean? And
12:45really, she really is. But you know how hard we are on ourselves then. So that's her thing.
12:51I think you're beautiful as well, Lisa Rae.
12:52Everyone, I hope y'all took some notes. I know I did. Thank you, Lisa Rae McCoy and Claudia Jordan
13:01for joining us. And of course, a special thank you to Estee Lauder. Please stick around for our
13:06next segment. We have much more coming soon.
