Transcript
00:01Double D.
00:02No, no!
00:03Looks like you're doing pretty good, huh?
00:05I get way more respect in here than I ever did on the outside.
00:08Think it might be time to sell that Nintendo stuff you put me in?
00:11No, no, no. It's going to be huge.
00:12Now, who does a bitch have to shoot to give a hot pastrami on a ride from Carnegie's up in here, OK?
00:15On it.
00:21So I read a couple of interviews you did last year just during COVID
00:26and, you know, talking about how life had changed for you.
00:29I'm curious, you know, how you feel now being back in the swing of things, you know, press reviews and things,
00:34promoting season three of Black Monday.
00:36You know, it's good. I mean, it's good.
00:39You know, the standstill was, you know, it had its perks, too, but it's really nice.
00:44I was really excited to see my co-stars again.
00:47They make me laugh.
00:49You know, it's like a nice break into what used to be normal, but it's a different world.
00:58But I was excited and it's good to do press and like actually engage with people again.
01:04And hopefully maybe next season people will engage in person, you know, but it is nice.
01:10And it's nice to see, you know, familiar and just smiling faces.
01:17Yeah. Yeah. And so I think the season was renewed in October of last year.
01:22So you filmed this season during COVID. Is that right?
01:25We well, actually, yeah, because what happened was we launched and then because of COVID, we had not finished editing.
01:33And so we couldn't air full season.
01:35So then there was a break. So then the season kind of got split in two and then it got re-organized.
01:42And but we did not we started we didn't start shooting early.
01:47So we were picked up, but we were we didn't we weren't able to get the cast together.
01:52I think Sony, they were in Showtime.
01:56They were pretty it was pretty important to them to make sure all the safety precautions were there so that like they wouldn't risk anyone's.
02:05Well, more than health, but life, you know, at this point, especially with COVID.
02:10So I think they took a lot of time to make sure all the safety measures were there for everyone involved until everyone felt comfortable.
02:16And then we started at early in the year.
02:19Okay. Okay. Got you. How was that for you kind of being back on set in that environment?
02:25You know, it was great. It was it was great because we had a lot of the same crew and we had our cast and it's so great to like.
02:33I mean, I just was happy that everyone was, you know, game and back and did it again.
02:39Like, you know, we were on the phone. It's like, are we doing it?
02:41It was like, yeah, we're doing it. So it was good.
02:43And it was also good, too, from a story point of view to just see where our characters were this season to see, you know, what each character was up to.
02:52And, you know, as as we're reading the scripts, it was great, a great discovery to see where Dawn is, where Mo and Blair.
03:00And I was like, oh, they they they're still crazy, but you still see their their evolution.
03:06Yes. You know, I love Donnie. She's fun to watch, but then also just relating to her like as a woman of just wanting her just do.
03:16Yeah. You know, we're working. So in what ways are you, you know, like Dawn? What ways are you not like her at all?
03:23I know I was just talking about that. I was like, I don't know that I'm like Dawn, but I know that I respect that Dawn is unapologetic about wanting to be successful.
03:32And, you know, by about being cutthroat, you know, I think oftentimes, you know, women feel like they have to be nice and they have to do it the right way.
03:46And I feel like I like that. She's like, yeah, Mo, I'm in love with you, but you you kind of fuck me a lot and I didn't forget it.
03:53And like this is business and that she's kind of able to toe the line with the guys, you know, and like the guys.
04:01And she's you know, I like that she hangs with the best of them. I was saying I was I'm similar in that I grew up with all brothers.
04:07So I'm used to be and I didn't have sisters and they're all older. So I'm used to having like a lot of guys around, you know what I mean?
04:18Like one of the one of the guys. So but but Dawn is and Dawn is off the hinges this season, too.
04:26Like, so I don't know. I read it and I was like, Dawn is out of her mind, but she's so much fun to play with.
04:33Yes, I love like you get the screen. I'm like, one episode is not enough. Like I need to know.
04:41And then also, you know, we found out last year you got your deal with Showtime.
04:44And I'm also the first. So can you talk about, you know, what it felt for you to just have the network see that value and getting that deal?
04:53It was great. You know, I have wanted to produce for a second now.
04:59I felt like, you know, I learned and then I did.
05:05I find great scripts that would be wonderful for myself, but really for other people.
05:11You know what I mean? So there's a lot of things and a lot of opportunities for writers and and I don't know.
05:17I just was it excited me to be able to create those opportunities and to to create programs and movies and whatever that, you know, people would enjoy.
05:28I would enjoy stories that maybe haven't been told or perspectives of stories that haven't been told.
05:34So it was great to do it with Showtime where I just I know everyone.
05:39They're so incredibly supportive and they have been since day one.
05:43And our executive is on Black Monday, Amy Israel, is a woman.
05:50So she certainly, you know, understands the plight, but she was incredibly supportive.
05:57So it's great to be able to see, you know, what we're going to come up with and watch some of those things come to fruition.
06:04So I'm excited about it.
06:05And one of the things in the news release was a one hour comedy special.
06:10Is that still in the works? Are you able to share any details about it?
06:14Yeah, it's in the works. You know, we just it's a matter of getting that together once Black Monday is done.
06:21You know, this is kind of this is the first thing I've shot in L.A. since I was shooting something before, but out of the country.
06:27And then I had to come back and finish something that was shut down because of COVID a year ago.
06:33So being able to get back to Black Monday and then like kind of doing the projects that I that I owed that I was behind on.
06:43And now, you know, for the comedy, you know, the thing about it is it's so specific.
06:48It has to be right. You know, if it's not right, you can't do it.
06:52It's better to not do it.
06:54So, you know, just kind of thinking and mulling over what is what is it?
06:58You know, what is it that I would want it to say?
07:01OK. And, you know, randomly, I interviewed Marlon Wayans a couple of weeks ago and he was talking about a movie he's working on.
07:10And he was like, I need, you know, the leading lady.
07:13He was like, she actually has to be funnier than me.
07:15And I was like, can I just put out Regina Hall's name for that?
07:19And he was like, you know, I thought the same thing he said he was going to call you after.
07:22I don't know if he did. But we talked about you and he was saying, you know, he feels like you are just one of those talents that's super underrated in Hollywood.
07:32But I'm curious if you feel that way or if you feel like, you know, you're getting your just do and people are seeing, you know, your talent.
07:39I don't know. I probably have a different perspective.
07:44I'm just all I just I feel like I get to work with such amazing people.
07:48And the fact that I've been able to just work throughout the years, you know, as Scary Movie celebrates 20, 21 years, you know, I feel like there is no greater due that someone can give you than like than like to continue to have you working.
08:08So, no, I feel I feel I feel really, really blessed in that way.
08:13So I think that's kind of like my perspective. It's just like, you know, it's good.
08:18I'm still here. What else could I want?
08:20Yeah. And I think, you know, I am a huge Best Man fan.
08:25So I'm super excited about this series.
08:28Yes. So thinking about that and even with Dawn, you know, how do you enjoy, you know, working with these characters that you get to kind of be with over the course of time?
08:37You know, as opposed to like one kind of movie and you're done.
08:41Yeah, it's interesting because, you know, that that that just kind of evolved.
08:44You know, it's not like when we did the first man, we thought there'd be another one.
08:48And then it was and it was just so wonderful to have the public receive it and be so supportive of of the growth of the characters, which probably mimics a lot of things that happen in our own life.
09:03And it's great.
09:04You know, one of the wonderful things about Black Monday, Dawn, is that like she continually evolves.
09:10So it's like what the writers do and how I think of her.
09:13And it's like, oh, she gets to have this and that.
09:15And, you know, it's a different kind of complexity that you can create over time.
09:21So it is.
09:23It's great.
09:23And you just you know, you never really know.
09:25I mean, even scary movie was never supposed to be a sequel.
09:30So sometimes these things evolve out of what you wouldn't necessarily expect.
09:37And so, like, I get incredibly, like, excited to revisit characters and see what, like, see where they are now and how they relate to the world.
09:50I mean, I guess much like life, you know, but it's not you.
09:54So you don't have the emotional weight of the reality of what life is.
10:01Yes.
10:03And then lastly, you know, there's so many biopics and things coming out now.
10:07You know, is there like a dream role, someone you would want to play or or even just a dream role that you have, you know, for yourself down the line?
10:14I don't know.
10:15You know, I mean, they're just there's just so many there's so many stories.
10:19I don't know if I have a dream role.
10:20Every role.
10:21It's like a cliche answer, but every role is kind of a dream role because it's like, I never would have thought of a fictitious company on Wall Street started by all the people who would never be on Wall Street.
10:34And then being the woman who's part of the thing that brought down Wall Street and is incredibly proud of it.
10:42And is now in prison.
10:45But it's actually opposite Don Cheadle.
10:47But, you know, so sometimes it's like it's more than my brain can create.
10:53So I love being a part of people's thought process when they think, well, what about Regina?
10:59And then hopefully I can do the same for other people in terms of creating roles.
11:05But, you know, you never you never know what comes as a gift.
11:08What I do love about Don is that she exists as her own entity and not even though she has a love relationship with with Moe, it's not in connection to Moe's needs or servicing Moe or being a doting wife when Moe comes home.
11:24Like she's she's a part of the problem, actually.
11:28And that, you know, that's that's a dream in and of itself.
11:32Yeah, she can have a spin off.
11:34I was thinking.
11:34I was like.
