Transcript
00:00Was there any hesitation about taking on two roles such as Aaliyah from American Crime and
00:07and Erica back-to-back because these are two very strong heavy hit right back-to-back right no
00:13hesitation whatsoever I love shows that are dark that are provocative and leftovers fall fell right
00:24in that category so no there was not a hesitation at all well we see you
00:29return to do any more animation like of course we talked about the boondocks before
00:33right the boondocks or comedy are we gonna see you go back to that I'm sure I mean
00:40that it just I there has not been the time for that right now but I would love
00:44to the animation is so much fun because you don't have to go through hair and
00:49makeup you don't have 5 a.m. calls and you really get a chance to really be
00:56someone else so yeah I would love to do it again we're gonna right now take a
01:02quick video call we have a video question from our essence family let's take a look
01:06this is Arielle from New York City I was wondering being a voice on the boondocks
01:11did you ever have any reservations about the show's content or using the n-word on
01:15the show oh that's a very good question yeah I mean I feel like that you know
01:20the the conversation of the n-word is one of those that it's I don't think it's
01:27gonna die right you know it's a way the generations express themselves I
01:35understand people who have really strong reactions to it I totally get it both
01:40ways no I did nothing Aaron Magruder is very smart I think he uses his voice to
01:50tell social commentary in a very clever way I feel like you can get a message
01:57across much stronger through comedy then you can being really heavy-handed with
02:03the drama making people think yeah yeah exactly yeah so no there was no
02:09hesitation because of the subject matter and you're doing a lot more
02:12directing now behind the lens would you ever consider creating your own show
02:16a la Shonda Rhimes putting your together your own franchise your own series
02:20absolutely absolutely I mean that's you know watch out oh yeah yeah would it be a
02:26comedy would it be a drama like what might be a little bit of both

03:16actually in a few years and he sent me the loveliest message in a bouquet of
03:21flowers to Austin after I won the Emmy and just really a wonderful message just
03:28how proud he was and you know telling me I'm a superstar and I'm a queen and all
03:34of those wonderful things that ladies we love to hear of course of course he's
03:38always I've I've pretty much have stayed in touch with most of the cast over the
03:44years you know sometimes a few years go by without talking to some people but um
03:51he just recently reached out I could imagine after working day in and day out
