Stunning natural hair styles to master before you walk across the stage.

00:00Hi, my name is Brendan Francois. I'm going to take you through three looks on how to wear your graduation cap with your natural hair.
00:05The first lady that's joining me is Julie from Essence. How are you?
00:09Good, how are you?
00:10I'm wonderful. Julie, you have amazing big hair. So what I'm going to do is show you how to manage this beautiful afro
00:17whilst you're wearing this beautiful cap. I'm just going to just put some heat to your roots.
00:22And that's just going to stretch out the afro slightly. Just put it on medium heat. Just put it into the roots.
00:28You can literally just do this at the sides around the hairline. And this will just help to smooth the hair up a little easier.
00:34It will also help to get it in a bun a lot quicker. You don't have to be neat. Get a hair bun.
00:39And literally just bring your hair up like so and pull the front out just a little bit.
00:44You can use your fingers for this. You don't have to use a comb at all. So this is the trick here.
00:49You just put it into a ponytail. And you want to twist this with your hands.
00:57And just bend over with your last bit of hair band. Like so. So the art is going to be to condense this bit here.
01:06You just want to pin them in. So what I've done here is literally just got the scissors and just cut in between.
01:13Just literally fold the fabric in and just cut it. What you're going to do is give yourself a hole.
01:18Because this is where the magical happens. So now we're going to place this on. Basically pin and go really.
01:24Find the holes. Pin inside. With the front. I, you know, I like to have fun with that.
01:29So I just get the U pins. These beautiful things here. And literally just pick up from the ends.
01:36Just twist with your finger. And just go in and pin. And it's done. It takes you like five minutes. And you're ready to go.
01:45Yay!
01:47So now we have Olivia here from Essence. And Olivia has dreadlocks, which I'm really familiar with.
01:52So you can see I'm just flat twisting here. Just use your fingers to section and parting. And just gather your thumb as your guidance.
02:00And pull going upwards. This just helps to stretch up all the side of your cheekbone and gives you a really good frame.
02:06You just use a hair grip just to pin it down. What I'm going to do here is just push this forward and then pin.
02:21You can be quite free with this as well. You don't have to be, you know, really directional with it.
02:26And just let it sit like so. So once again, a really good way to get this hat to sit on is just by cutting into it
02:33to create some holes which will give you base to put the hair grips through. And what I'm going to do with this one here,
02:38I'm just going to literally scrunch it with my hands. And because of the holes that I've created,
02:43it will allow me to pin this really easily. You just find the holes and then you just push in the hat.
02:49It's very simple. And here you go. You have your little side parting with dreadlocks.
02:56You can do this with box braids as well as a good way to work with this style. And at the back of it, it looks really beautiful
03:01because you've created a base to work with. You've got the twist going on around here.
03:05Keeps your personality in there. So I'm with Dina from Essence. And Dina has beautiful, short, naturally curly hair.
03:11What I did earlier was to stretch it out a little bit with the hairdryer, just with my fingers. No comb needed.
03:16And just to give it a little bit more length just round the front. So what I'm going to do here,
03:20we've actually already adapted this beautiful hat here. And we've put a headband onto it.
03:25And we're just going to split this in the half. And this is where the headband is going to sit.
03:29You can do it with a tail comb or with your fingers. It doesn't have to be really neat.
03:32We use the headband and literally just slide it in the middle. This helps just to give it a bit more grip and sturdiness for you.
03:38And you can see already it sits in there really beautifully. Now you can choose to hold it with a grip with a pin if you want.
03:43You can use these U-pins just to blend the hair around the actual headband itself if you don't want to show that.
03:49And just literally by just going back on itself and pushing it in like so. And that will help just to cover it up,
03:55which will look really nice. So almost it looks like the hair is just balancing in there by magic.
03:59You can start to see now it's actually disappeared, which now looks even more cool. Just at this side.
04:04This is really cute. It gives you a nice situation here. Or you can just bring it over to a side and pin it and pull it down.
04:13But it's very simple. I think you can be really versatile with a look like this actually and you can do many things with it.
04:18I really like that. It's really important to know that all these styles are achievable with just pins and imagination.
04:24So just remember, make the hat work of your hair, not the hair work of your hat. And it's here. So let's just have fun.
