03:26We have Chrissy Jones who is a gorgeous blonde like myself. Hers is a little bit better than mine
03:35And we thank you and we have Sade Brown who is walking this gorgeous
03:41I see some handsome purple in there too. I didn't even see that
03:43Awesome. Oh, it's the light
03:45Okay, okay
03:47It looks great. It looks really cool on you
03:49Awesome
03:51Well, great. Okay, so let's get this conversation. So we're actually gonna start out with a video about Chrissy telling us about her hair color
04:00experience, so roll the video
04:07I don't see it
04:09Video? There we go
04:11It's been an awesome experience. It's just been a lot. New York is very busy. You know a lot of people. Just crazy
04:21But yeah, New York's definitely been a great experience. I got it and I like screamed like at the top of my lungs
04:27Oh my god cream of nature like I never thought that I would be doing this
04:31Me? Really?
04:33Most blonde girls hair break off very easily because they don't take the proper care of it
04:45My hair is so flowy, you know, it's bouncy, it's healthy
04:50And that's hard to say for a lot of girls with blonde hair. They use this shampoo that's like mango and shea butter
04:55My hair feels so moisturized three days later. My hair smells amazing like still
05:02Everybody loves my hair. They're like, oh my gosh. What color is it? Love my hair. My hair is my best friend
05:06My hair is my best friend. My hair is my best friend. That is like a great a great t-shirt
05:19Great favorite. Um, so let's just jump right into it. Um, you know, Prissy has this gorgeous blonde hair color
05:27Tell us a little bit. What's the first thing to consider when you if you want to color your hair?
05:32Okay, so a lot of times the first thing that we want to make sure of is we want to you know
05:36You guys heard a carfax, right? We want to think about a hair fact
05:39We want to know what is the history of that hair in about the last two years. It's very important when we're using these type of colors
05:47To understand have we been using previous colors? Have we used black rinse?
05:51Have we used henna because that will affect the overall, you know final look
05:56But with Chrissy when she came to us, she was really basically she had some lighter color
06:00So we were able to achieve these beautiful blondes with the cream of nature certified natural ingredients color
06:06And uh, no bleach and everybody's always fascinated that we're able to get it that bright without bleach
06:12But again, I think we've done Chrissy's hair two times and it's amazing color
06:17It looks really healthy. I think that you definitely think if i'm gonna go blonde my hair is gonna break off
06:22And that's really amazing that you can get that vibrant of a color blonde without bleach like that
06:29It is pretty impressive and a lot of it has to do with the color of course
06:32Um, but again understanding what's in that hair if there's keratin treatments or is your hair natural?
06:39Are you relaxed? We need to know what's going on with the hair before we even open up the box
06:43Once we understand that we're really able to create these beautiful colors, uh without using bleach
06:48And again with the certified natural ingredients you see you get the shine and the moisture and it looks beautiful
06:54Sometimes you see blondes. They're kind of dry. You see with hers. It's just full of life
06:58Vibrancy and uh, you see she likes to swing it all day, so
07:02She's gonna break her neck over there
07:04So should you um should you go to your colorist to get a sort of consultation before you?
07:10I would always recommend that but again a lot of ladies one thing about naturals especially they know their hair better than anyone else
07:17They know what products work in their hair. They've lived with their curl type for their whole life
07:21So they kind of have an idea of is my hair healthy or is it not?
07:25Is it dry or is it not? You know, so you know always of course it's great to get a professional opinion
07:31But if you're gonna do it at home, that's okay
07:32Just kind of have a general idea of what you've put in your hair in the last, you know
07:37Two years or a year or so and um, you know, what's the general state of it, you know
07:42Got it and Chrissy tell us a little bit about um your experience with the color itself
07:47Like how was that?
07:50Can we get another mic or can we turn this mic on?
07:53It's not on?
07:56Oh, yeah, there you go. Um, my hair is
08:00Like I said, it's my best friend
08:03The color is super super healthy and it literally feels amazing
08:11It's so
08:13And stuff I like
08:16To be blonde. I've been blonde for like two years. This is the healthiest my hair has ever been using the cream of nature blonde
08:22Because I don't use bleach anymore ever since I started using this color
08:26um
08:27Yeah
08:28Awesome
08:29So a lot of people because you'll look at her hair now. It's straight. We pressed it out and curled it
08:34But her hair is actually natural like Kayla's
08:36So a lot of women are afraid to go to these blonde shades because they think that it's gonna affect their natural curl patterns
08:43So I would like for you to give them a testimony kind of how your hair feels when it's in its natural state as well
08:49My curl pattern is still fully intact as big as
08:54I don't know what um
08:56It's soft. Everybody that touches my hair is like wow
08:59It feels really soft and I'm like that's that health girl
09:03I love it. So Oliver um, what's she what's something to consider if you are if you are thinking about hair color?
09:14Should you start with highlights? Can you go full out?
09:17Full head or what should you um, you know a lot of times that's based on the client um
09:22Some clients are scared and some kind of want to just jump all the way out there, so I feel like if you're kind of hesitant
09:28Highlights is a great way to go also one thing you want to understand is if your hair is
09:33Dark or black or brown and you take it this blonde you have to understand that there's a maintenance that comes with that
09:40So if you don't want to deal with a high maintenance type of color
09:44Maybe you don't want to go all over as bright and just maybe some highlights because that way when the highlights as they grow out
09:49You're not worrying about that black those black roots that demarcation line
09:53So those are a lot of things that you want to think about as well, but uh, you know
09:57As far as the safety of it and the health of the hair
10:00It's going to be great whether you do it all over or with highlights or with both
10:04um with Chrissy
10:05We've got a little bit of highlights in her hair as well as a nice base color as well
10:10We did her roots a little bit as you can see a little chocolate root
10:13So she's wearing a couple different things on there and again a very healthy still
10:18So, you know, I like to just jump in there
10:20But you know if you think you're scared highlights is great as well
10:24And talking about jumping in I want to get to kayla and this amazing red hair
10:29I think we actually have a video
10:31For kayla before we get into some questions for you. Can we roll kayla's video?
10:36I love New York. It's so fast-paced. It's like a breath of fresh air if we did hair, wardrobes, nails
10:54So the color you see in my hair is vivid red as you can see it's vibrant
10:59Shiny I have colored before I don't do it often so I was definitely due for a color change
11:07I love it. Love it. Love it. I posted a selfie last night. A lot of people love the color
11:12I got great feedback on it, so I'm excited. Creamy Nature products are amazing. They have great deep conditioning masks that I use
11:19They have a new mango and shea butter shampoo and conditioner and as soon as I put in my hair
11:27I'm like I need this in my life. It's definitely added to my wash and go rituals. Who doesn't want to smell like
11:33mango? So I had I had a good time felt like super glamorous
11:38Awesome with that red looks fiery and amazing
11:48Tell us a little bit about the the maintenance of keeping up red is I think like the most difficult color to keep vibrant
11:57Tell us about your experience with the color and just up keeping it up
12:01Yes, um red is a I would say a difficult color to keep up
12:06But if you have someone like Oliver who you go to on a regular
12:10To keep me together. It's definitely beneficial
12:13But as far as um keeping it healthy like Christy was talking about I will say I deep condition religiously
12:20And um definitely the products are very important like I said the mango and shea butter moisture
12:25shampoo and conditioner
12:27Followed by the styling products to help give it that definition is very very important
12:33and um
12:34Keeping it, you know healthy and maintaining that vibrancy that
12:38We all love to see in our color once we get it. So, um, just you know being consistent in that routine and keeping it together
12:47It's beautiful. Yeah, I want to tell us a little bit about
12:51Your recommendations for upkeep are there certain products that you should stay away from and they fade your color
12:57Or you know ones that you should add to your routine absolutely vibrant
13:01Um, well one of the things with red like she said it is one of the more higher maintenance
13:06Colors to keep so as long as you're using a sulfate free shampoo, that's going to help
13:10Prolong the life of it
13:12Also, the certified naturals has a great like you saw on the video with the mango. They have a great shea moisture
13:19conditioner
13:21So the main thing is moisture a lot of people like to run and do protein or these one minute reconstructors or this and that and
13:28Understanding that when you deal with color the main deal
13:32The main enemy is moisture people always think well if I get color my hair is going to be dry
13:37So one of the things that we have to make sure is that we're using a conditioner that is full of juices and berries
13:42And you know moisture so moisture moisture moisture and sulfate free is going to get you a lot better results
13:48Great and so what are some do's and don'ts for coloring your hair at home?
13:52I think that you know if you haven't used an at-home hair color the thought of it could be a little scary
13:59Yes
13:59Um so so some do's and don'ts I would definitely say do
14:04Have an idea of what color direction you want to go on
14:07Um, and we a lot of times base that on our skin tone and our eyes and you know basically our overall lifestyle
14:14You know if you work at the bank maybe vivid red might not be the color for you. Maybe so. I don't know
14:19Um, but you know taking into account that the color is a big thing
14:24Um, don't I would say be so quick to go and get bleach and try to create your own highlights and and lift your own, uh
14:33Blondes I don't think that's ever a good idea
14:36If you're wanting the blonde shades, I think using some of the the box colors like I said the certified naturals
14:41The lightest blonde or light blonde is going to really be a lot easier on your hair
14:46And I do want to say also
14:48Make sure that you're keeping up with a regular Kayla mentioned it a little bit. It's all about consistency
14:53I know a lot of times naturalistas like to have this product that product this product
14:57So your hair it doesn't know what to do. You know what I mean because you're over here then you're over here
15:02So once you find that product that works for your hair as far as the moisture stick with it
15:08So consistency is very key in that and uh
15:12I would say don't be afraid to try new different colors, you know
15:16Um, if you're if you've been blonde the last 10 years, you know, maybe switch it up
15:21Uh Chrissy thinks she's not going but i'm gonna get her a different color one of these days
15:26But uh, you know don't be afraid of color a lot of times color gets a bad rap because a lot of people have had terrible experiences before
15:34Um, but I will say that even as stylists and people at home in the industry
15:38It's evolved so much now that we can safely color our hair and not have to worry about damage and breakage
15:45So, you know be educated one thing I know about everybody these days. They're very educated
15:50I get clients all the time and they're like i've watched a thousand youtubes. I've seen your videos
15:55You know, they come they say essence said this and criminator said that so I know that everybody out there is educated
16:02So, um, it's just about um, you know using the color to express yourself and and experimenting a little bit
16:08Awesome, and so um, we definitely want to get some input from each other about your experience with the color
16:14Tell us about um, what color your you have in your hair and how it's been with
16:21the premium matrix
16:23So the color that I have in my hair is jet black and I absolutely love it
16:28It didn't dry my hair out or make it you know that give it that really rough look it's super soft
16:35It's just beautiful shiny
16:37It is
16:37Um, yeah, I absolutely love it. I did a twist out with it as you can see here
16:43Um using some of the foaming styling foam up there
16:47It's just beautiful. Yeah, it looks amazing
16:50It is brilliant a guy a lot of times like she said when you use you use different blacks
16:55You can get kind of a green tint or looks a little dry or you know ashy as some people would say
17:00But if you look at her black, I mean even under the lights, it's very rich very moist
17:05It looks soft like it makes you want to touch it like it just looks very soft
17:09Yeah, you know a lot of that has to do with the certified natural ingredients that's found in the cream of nature products
17:14Yeah, it looks really really healthy gorgeous
17:16And um, let's talk a little bit about how to
17:20Color your hair if you're natural versus relaxed or chemically treated like what um, what should you consider?
17:27Um, well a lot of times you definitely if you're wearing a relaxer you want to consider when the last time you got a relaxer
17:34How often are you getting a relaxer and you're wanting to make sure that when you're doing color first of all if you have a relaxer?
17:41Definitely, we don't want recommend using any type of bleach
17:44Because once that bleach hits where the relaxer is which you know, there's no way that it can't touch
17:50You're going to experience some breakage
17:51So what I have to explain to some of the clients that have
17:55Relaxers that you might not be able to go as blonde as Chrissy or you or you know
17:59Beyonce or you know, Sierra these are a lot of pictures that we get in and so
18:04You know, you have to kind of be realistic on your expectations as far as that is concerned
18:10But if you're a natural sky is the limit as far as what what color you can be and what you can do
18:15So and so speaking of Beyonce and Sierra, um, let's talk a little bit about color trends
18:21Who is the most requested celebrity color that you get?
18:26Well, honestly, I mean, you know always Beyonce the beehive is real
18:31So we get a lot of that, you know blonde is really big in Atlanta. I'm in Atlanta
18:35So we see a lot of that, but you know, honestly nowadays because people are so in tune with social media and YouTube a lot of
18:45pictures I get our bloggers
18:47naturalistas, you know
18:49lipstick and curls and
18:51ETC blog mag and you know a lot of these big time curl box and you know
18:56We get pictures like that where people will come in and say I want this so you know
19:00You're really not seeing celebrities as much honestly, you're seeing you know people from ads and you know
19:06That that's really where it's gone
19:08I mean, I kind of want to try Kayla's hair color
19:12Honestly, I'm in Atlanta
19:13I like some color inspiration right there
19:14I get 15 to 20 requests on Kayla's red every week
19:17I swear I promise
19:19So it definitely helps when you have these naturalistas, you know because
19:22I think that people really can relate to these ladies more so than say like a Beyonce or Rihanna because
19:28They feel like this is everyday wearable hair, you know
19:31Average look how red Kayla's hair is you wouldn't think that you could just
19:34You know pop on the scene with this red, but it's very natural looking if you really think about it on her
19:39So, you know, I think a lot of people are going more towards that the everyday model as opposed to a lot of the celebrities honestly
19:48And so we are here at essence festival and the sun is blazing outside
19:54What are some things to keep in mind when you're covering your hair particularly during the summer?
19:58Uh, well again moisture is always going to be something that you're going to fight because you know again being in Atlanta humidity new orleans humidity, you know
20:06So even if your hair is natural with no color you're fighting dryness
20:11So sometimes, um, you know
20:12That's really the only thing that you have to look out for but the main thing you have to understand is a lot of times
20:19Consumers clients go in with all of these different products and make situations that are okay kind of worse
20:26So what we want to do is make sure that we're educated on what it is that works best for our hair
20:31Because sometimes, you know, it might work great for your sister or your best friend, but you might need a different formula
20:37So it's kind of understanding like what works best is going to be key in in success
20:42And it just has to come down with understanding your type of hair
20:46But there's a lot of great things out here again always when you're looking for products moisture
20:52Different types of oils botanical oils and the products like the certified naturals. I mean that's what you're looking for
20:59And so are there certain colors that work best for different skin tones?
21:04Absolutely
21:05Absolutely, but you know
21:07There's a wide range because back in the day, you know
21:10You would think that you know some of the darker skin wouldn't wear more blonde
21:13But now you're you're seeing that a lot and it's beautiful so you can kind of push the barriers
21:18I don't think it's as much on light and dark as far as like
21:22You know we see hair and you might see it and it looks too orange on a person or it looks too flat on a person
21:27So that's the thing you want to look at and what we do is we look at your skin tone
21:32If your skin tone pulls a lot of warmth gold yellow
21:35Then you want to have a warmer. I mean excuse me ashier tones and vice versa
21:40If you don't have a lot of gold then gold colors work well with you
21:43So sort of the opposite
21:44The opposite so if you're yellow and then you go get a yellow color
21:48Then it's all just
21:50But if you're yellow and you get a color that contrast that then that's when you start to get to play on the colors
21:57Right so and everybody can kind of look and know your skin tone
22:00So that's really what we base it on and a lot of times, you know trying to bring your eyes out
22:04You know even kayla has beautiful blue eyes, but before her hair is red you never really saw it
22:10Sometimes it looks green or you know, so we look at eyes and hair color to bring that out as well
22:15So yeah, so important question
22:17Can I pull off kayla's hair color?
22:19You could absolutely pull off kayla's color
22:22I would personally come to new york to hook you up. Yes, actually it would work
22:26Now even with reds understanding you know because sometimes when clients come in you say red they get kind of scared
22:32But understanding there's so many different types of reds
22:35So what it comes down to is what type of red works for you
22:38There's cool reds. There's warm reds, you know in in consumer terms
22:43coppers
22:44Rich fiery reds as opposed to more like red wine merlot burgundy, you know, but out of those two
22:51Definitely we can find a shade for you. I got you
22:55I might want to change it up. Yeah, and again
22:57This would be a great color for you to transition in the fall. Yeah, you know if you've been blonde all summer and spring
23:03Switch it up on them, you know
23:05Go a little red
23:07Keep that in mind. Um, so what's next for hair color? What are some trends in hair color that people can look to try?
23:15So many different things. Uh, we're doing a lot of block coloring
23:19Block coloring is basically okay. So when you look at hair in the past
23:23We've seen highlights where they look really stripey, right? You see stripes stripes stripes
23:28Well now what we're doing is getting rid of stripes and actually creating different dimension by using blocks
23:33And it's something easy that you can do at home
23:35Even taking like a circle section up top and then leaving this down here
23:40And then this would be one color and the bottom is another color. That's what we call block coloring
23:44So creating dimension in two tones
23:46Um, also, you know ombre is always in style, you know, just because you have roots does not know ombre now people
23:54Yeah, but uh, I get on my clients. That's a whole nother seminar, but uh
24:00Another big thing that we're doing like we did with Chrissy is not taking those roots all the way as light as the ends
24:06So giving it a more natural look giving the color a little more depth
24:11That's something big that we're doing. So like with um, Chrissy. I can grab this real quick
24:16We have these two shades right here. We used the light gold and brown on our roots. Oh, so you two colors
24:23Yeah, we just section it in four sections. Uh-huh
24:25We mix this up and we apply it all the way to the roots like we were doing like a relaxer
24:30Then we went in with our
24:32Honey blonde and pulled it through the ends and we were able to do that at the same time
24:37So that's giving her that two-tone blonde look so that's a big trend as well
24:41You'll notice like before when people were blonde
24:45They would come in and I mean if they had like a half an inch of new growth
24:48They want that blonde like people wanted to put the blonde like in the scalp, right?
24:52So now we get blondes and people like oh, I want the roots dark though
24:56I like that, you know, give me a couple inches of dark roots
24:59So it helps us this house like great. That's great
25:02Love it because it's hard to start matching those colors
25:05But anyway, I think that that's one of the big trends giving you dark roots with lighter ends
25:10Is that something that you would suggest trying at home?
25:15Absolutely, it's very easy to try it when you're doing color at home
25:18The important thing is see a lot of times what we do is we open that box and we're just we have no structure to it
25:23We're just trying to put the color
25:25Yeah, like girl just put this in
25:27If you're going to do it at home, which is totally fine
25:29What you want to do is make your life simpler
25:31So if you're doing it or if your friend is doing it that they're able to do it
25:34And it's still just because you did it at home doesn't necessarily have to look like you did it at home, right?
25:40So the thing that you want to do is section it into four sections
25:43Once you section it into four sections going right down the middle and then from ear to ear
25:48Section it off then. I mean a lot of women remember how to do these relaxers at home
25:53So four sections is kind of something. I think we know what to do, right? Y'all good on that?
25:58So once you get those four sections if you're trying to do the roots
26:01You want to make sure that you pick a darker color
26:03You'll have them side by side then you would just simply apply it to the roots first
26:08And then you're just going to make sure you're not going to pull it through
26:10Got it. Okay. Once you do that and sometimes you might already have new growth
26:14So it's kind of like a road map you'll see it
26:17And then once you do that you mix up your next bowl and then just apply it through to the ends
26:22Let them process at the same time shampoo it out very easy to do at home
26:26Still gives you a salon ready look nice and we do it with kayla too
26:30We don't want her roots to be as red as her hands. We don't want her to have orange roots
26:35So what we do if you look
26:37I'm a visual person so I had to come on down here if you look
26:41These are not this is not her natural hair color
26:43But it is a darker hair color that we chose to put on the roots again to give it a natural look
26:49So if I know I want vivid red on the end
26:51Then I'm able to put like a violet red on the roots so that it just looks more natural
26:56So if she decides to pull her hair back, you know, she still has a hairline
27:00As opposed to you know it looking really hot
27:02So that's one of the things that we're doing a lot of and it's it's something that's easy that you can do at home
