“What is amazing about 'Underground' is it doesn’t just show us as victims, but as victors."
Transcript
00:00I'm an action person, civil rights activist, a mom, a daughter, a partner.
00:06A very fun and silly person, but very serious about the injustices in this world.
00:17Sojourner Truth is a woman who I would say is a great inspiration for us all.
00:22Why? Because, you know, that famous speech,
00:25ain't I a woman, was directly in response to this idea that the white women were to be respected
00:33and loved and uplifted and treated, you know, fairly and treated well.
00:38And the black woman has to ask the question, you know, ain't I a woman?
00:43Don't I deserve the same rights?
00:44I really look up to Ida B. Wells.
00:47Technically, no one looked at her in government or in politics, but she was really political.
00:51She was advocating for people to speak out against lynching.
00:55She launched essentially, like, issue campaigns as a black woman.
00:59And I think that's amazing that she was able to do that without having pretty much any rights.
01:03In the context of the Women's March, we had to ensure that women of color were asking,
01:09ain't I a woman and aren't my issues?
01:11That may not necessarily be reproductive rights,
01:14but racial justice is definitely important for us.
01:17And is that issue equal in comparison to whatever it is that another woman would want to talk about?
01:24What I'm excited about for Underground Season 2 is not so much what's going to be in it,
01:30because we've already seen how much of a badass show it is,
01:33but I know I'm excited to see people watching it that are not black folks, right?
01:37I am super excited to see in WGN's Underground Season 2 how they shape the messaging around Harriet Tubman.
01:46We know so much about her.
01:48We've heard so many stories.
01:49What is amazing about Underground is it doesn't just show us as being victims, but rather victors.
01:55And right now, with all that we see happening in this country,
01:59I think that there are several groups that could really take a page out of our book
02:04and benefit from understanding our experiences and, you know, the sort of the strength of black people,
02:10what we've been through and how we were able to break down walls and barriers
02:14that a lot of people probably didn't think we would ever be able to accomplish.
