00:00He was endearing as hell, and even though we only had him for a few months, he's part
00:14of our fabric now.
00:18There's times when people will call me and say, oh, I know you ad-libbed that.
00:22Oh, that's his goal line.
00:23No, you ain't say that.
00:24You ad-libbed that.
00:25Oh, the oxtail.
00:25I know you put that in there.
00:26And it was like, that was written.
00:28No, they wrote it.
00:29But that's the kind of writer's room it is.
00:32People don't play around with it.
00:33They do research.
00:34They keep their air to the ground.
00:36Dan was very careful to have representations of other cultures in that room.
00:41He was very specific about it, and he went on a search to get that.
00:45And then also, they give us the opportunity to play with it.
00:48They'll say, if something doesn't feel as natural, say something.
00:50You know, say something else.
00:51So I'll throw in little things here and there that sort of, to me, represent what a young
00:58woman in her 30s would say.
01:00Like, this is what she would say.
01:01Whether she has kids or not, this is what she would say.
01:03This is the culture.
01:04This is where we're at.
01:05As far as Sterling and I are concerned, we have this sort of idea of this young love that,
01:12you know, they kind of just held on to each other.
01:13And they chose each other.
01:16And so we work from that.
01:17I enter into Beth, and I'm just being her with her husband.
01:22But it's not until you get the feedback that you realize what's actually resonating with
01:25people.
01:26So, you know, the fact that people feel that we are this great representation of Black love
01:32on television.
01:33I mean, how can you be mad at that?
01:34You grew up searching for that on TV.
01:37You search for, you know, the Cosby Show images.
01:39You search for, you know, Martin and Gina.
01:43You search for these touchstone relationships that we had to try to find growing up as a
01:49reflection.
01:50And so the fact that I'm in one of them, yeah, I'm still wrapping my brain around it, but
01:56it's a good feeling.
