00:00So, in Randall dealing with his anxieties and breakdowns, why do you think it's so
00:12important for that character to embody all of those issues and for it to be a thing?
00:20It's kind of a little bit a conversation starter about mental health and black men,
00:24but I wish it wasn't happening on this show, kind of.
00:28Really?
00:29I don't know.
00:30I mean, like, if I knew more about the writers behind it and who were writing it, then maybe
00:33I'd feel some type of way.
00:34But if it's just, like, white people writing about a black man having a breakdown, I'm gonna
00:38feel some type of way about it.
00:40Oh, wow.
00:41Do you think it'd be nice to have the perspective of a black man instead of just, like...
00:44Yeah.
00:45I mean, I think either way, it's a great conversation starter.
00:48Oh, yeah.
00:49It's something that we don't see often on TV, and I think that's part of the problem,
00:53that black men are always either angry, hypersexualized, or they're just, like, these big masculine
00:58figures.
00:59Yeah.
01:00And we don't often see them break down and deal with, like, the woes of being a parent
01:06and a husband and an employee and a child.
01:09Randall's like a real person.
01:10He is a black man who's going through issues that nobody, either black or white, is, like,
01:17exempt from.
01:18And I don't care that the writers might all be white or might all be black or a combination
01:23of anything else.
01:24Like, I just think that it's a really important thing.
01:26It's absolutely important.
01:27But, yeah, I would prefer to, like, have, because there's, like, certain nuances about, like,
01:34being a black man that only a black man would know.
01:36You're right.
01:37And that's why I think I really love Susan Kelechi Watson's character, because she just
01:44gives subtle hints that I don't think they write into the script that give you clues that
01:48she is, like, as black.
01:49Yeah.
01:50As black as they come.
01:51I would love to see how they met, like, in a flashback to, like, have their backstory.
01:55This is why we need a spin-off.
01:56Yes.
01:57I would be down for that.
01:58This is why we need a spin-off.
01:59Because, you know, they probably met and it was just, like, just some, like, ugh.
02:03I feel like she probably had, like, an afro or something really cute.
02:07And he was, like, that cute little nerdy boy.
02:10And she was like, come on, let me give you some of this black loving.
02:13And then they just lived happily ever after.
02:15And has a cute little black baby.
02:17Oh my god.
02:18Okay, now Randall's dad.
02:20We need to talk about him.
02:21Like, ugh.
02:22Like, every time Randall's dad is on screen, like, I just feel like I might start crying.
02:26Because he's, like, he's dying.
02:27He's, like, trying to deal with dying.
02:29And then Randall's, like, trying to make sure he takes care of himself.
02:32But William's also, like, I'm dying.
02:34I know I'm dying.
02:35Just let me, like, figure it out and do it in peace.
02:37And it's just, like, I can see both sides and I understand why Randall is, like, freaking out.
02:41Because his dad's dying.
02:42But it's also, like, William just wants to die in peace and, like, do it his own way.
02:46And it's just so much.
02:48I, ugh.
02:49Every time there's a scene between those two, I just feel like I'm gonna cry.
02:52But I also think that it's kind of, like, twofold, right?
02:55Like, Randall's dad has already died.
02:58Like, Jack is dead.
02:59Yeah.
03:00And that was his dad.
03:01That's the only dad he knew for the entirety of his life.
03:04And then there's this other guy, William, comes in.
03:07And it's like, oh, you're my dad, but you're, like, not really.
03:10Yeah.
03:11So it's kind of, like, learning someone new while also, like, experiencing letting someone go again.
03:20Yeah.
03:21And I think that that is really, really powerful.
03:23That's crazy.
03:24It's also kind of, like, when you think about it, really heartbreaking because, like, this was his second shot at having, like, a dad.
03:30Dad.
03:31Can a black man get a dad?
03:32And now he's about to die.
03:33Please.
03:34Like, let this man have a dad.
03:35Please.
03:36That's all I want for Randall.
03:37Give this man a dad that's not Miguel because I don't like him.
03:42That's gonna be a point of disagreement because I like Miguel, so.
03:46I don't like Miguel.
03:47You know what?
03:48You need to get over your Miguel bias.
