In this episode of ESSENCE Now's "We Need to Talk About...", editors Lauren Porter and Sydney Scott discuss the love story of Beth and Randall on the hit TV show "This Is Us".
Transcript
00:00Okay, Syd, we need to talk about This Is Us, particularly the wonderful, magical, amazing
00:12relationship between Beth and Randall.
00:15Honestly, if they had their own show, I wouldn't be mad.
00:18I would sign up for like all the show alerts, I would be on Twitter tweeting my little heart
00:22out.
00:23I would just, I would die for their own spinoff.
00:26And the love between them feels so real.
00:28Oh, it's so authentic, it's so black, it's so black.
00:32The only thing that would make it blacker is if she wore a bonnet and he wore a do-rag.
00:35Yeah!
00:36That's the only thing we're missing.
00:37We need to see Beth scarf, tie it up, with a bonnet on, going to bed like, don't talk
00:44to me right now.
00:45We're fighting.
00:46Do you see this bonnet?
00:47Once it comes on, it's not coming off.
00:50We do need to touch on their tension, because they are kind of having a little tiff right
00:54now.
00:55Yeah, but you know, all couples do.
00:56I, this is like, I feel like so much, there's so much in this tiff, because Randall is like,
01:04I want to adopt.
01:05Yeah.
01:06Suddenly.
01:07And then Beth is like, wait a minute, we got two little girls.
01:09I'm trying to like, I don't know.
01:11I think they just went through a lot of transition in last season.
01:14You know, William obviously was the biggest one, gaining and losing him.
01:19And then that whole Kevin sleeping in their basement thing was weird.
01:23Beth finding out Randall's secret before he did.
01:27Yeah.
01:28And confronting his mom about it.
01:29Like, they just went through a lot last season.
01:31So I understand why she is obviously hesitant to make any big changes to their household.
01:37Yeah.
01:38But I also understand why he is so like persistent in wanting to make a change.
01:44But you know, that miscommunication is something that happens with couples.
01:47They've been together for quite some time.
01:48We still need a backstory.
01:50I need to know.
01:51We definitely need a backstory.
01:52How they met.
01:53Because you know it's going to be good.
01:54I fell in love.
01:55You know it's going to be good.
01:56Oh, it's going to be so black.
01:57I hope Randall is like, I went to an HBCU.
02:00We met on campus.
02:01Oh my god.
02:02It's like really cute.
02:03Could you imagine the meeting at like homecoming?
02:04Let's do that.
02:05Or like a pep rally.
02:06Or something cute on the yard.
02:08I saw her across the yard and then I knew.
02:11That would be amazing.
02:13Anywho, they've decided to foster this young woman.
02:16Yes.
02:17The scene where Beth is like doing her hair.
02:21Ugh.
02:22Flashbacks.
02:23I cried a little.
02:24Because every little black girl has that moment where her mom like does her hair in the kitchen.
02:29And it is such a like ceremonious experience.
02:32You get to bond with someone of a different generation.
02:35And the whole like talk about my sisters and I bonded over hair was really beautiful.
02:40It was so good.
02:41But it also touched on this girl has been through it.
02:45Through it.
02:46And the stress from that is like just in her hair basically.
02:50It's like falling out.
02:51Yeah.
02:52And it was just such a moment to be like wow.
02:54Not only is this like we're seeing two black women right now in an intimate moment.
02:59Because hair is really intimate for black women.
03:00Absolutely.
03:01And then there's also a whole conversation about like how that stress specifically affects black women.
03:07Absolutely.
03:08I don't think it's talked about that like yes you can alopecia can happen when you're stressed like that.
03:13Especially when you're like it doesn't matter how old you are.
03:15She's so young too.
03:16She's a teenager.
03:17Yeah.
03:18She's so young.
03:19She's so young.
03:20She's so young.
03:21She's so young.
03:22She's so young.
03:23She's so young.
03:24She's so young.
03:25I think she's in jail.
03:26Okay.
03:27And then her father is like nowhere to be found.
03:29So like obviously she's been through a lot.
03:31And that stress is clearly manifesting.
03:33And for her to be losing her hair.
03:35Which you know black women pride themselves on in the first place.
03:39Yeah.
03:40I don't know how long this storyline is going to last but I really hope for the best.
03:43I don't really like her.
03:44I don't really like her but I hope for the best.
03:47Sure.
03:48I want it to end on a good note but I know this show will make us cry.
03:51Something's going to happen and I'm going to be like lost for days just crying.
03:56Can I just say that I still love Beth and Randall's subtle like interactions.
04:01When it seems like no one else is looking or like paying attention.
04:04They slip in little quips or one-liners or really cute moments like in last week's episode.
04:10He said something about how he's now the stay at home dad and she's the working woman.
04:15And he loves the way that she looks in her pumps.
04:17And she was like I know.
04:18And he was like I know you know.
04:19I just wanted to let you know that I know you know you know.
04:21It was so cute.
04:23I loved it.
04:24Cause that's like little couple things that you do.
04:26Absolutely.
04:27So it's so cute.
04:28They're honestly I wouldn't be surprised like if.
04:31No I'm not going to say that.
04:33If they were like a real life couple it wouldn't surprise me.
04:35Oh yeah but he's happily married.
04:36He's happily married to a gorgeous woman.
04:38Gorgeous.
04:39Flawless.
04:40Queen.
04:41And I'm pretty sure she's in a relationship with someone herself.
04:43Yeah.
04:44Susan Kelechi Watson.
04:45But that love on screen is like so real.
04:47It's something I feel like a lot of people can relate to.
04:49Absolutely.
04:50And I'm happy that their daughters have that representation.
04:53Like their fictional daughters obviously have that representation.
04:57Like it's cute to see.
04:58Yeah.
04:59Like in two weeks ago when they were like fighting and then they made up in the parking lot.
05:02And he picked her up.
05:03Oh my god it was so cute.
05:04It was so cute.
05:05And also as someone I'm going to freely admit that I do not really like kids.
05:09But those two little girls on the show are amazing.
05:12Like.
05:13Why don't you like kids?
05:14I just don't.
05:15Don't.
05:16Don't like kids.
05:17You're the Grinch basically.
05:18Maybe.
05:19Maybe.
05:20That's the problem.
05:21That's why I'm the star of the show and you're not.
05:23Anywho.
05:24Anywho.
05:25In conclusion.
05:26Beth and Randall.
05:27Iconic TV couple.
05:28And Sydney is a Scrooge.
05:30Sydney is a Scrooge.
