00:00Are there going to be parallels between Black-ish and Grown-ish, and how would you describe
00:09the show?
00:10I mean, I think how I describe the show is, of course, we're in the pre-production
00:13phases, so there are no scripts that I can give you an inside scoop on.
00:16But our main goal is...
00:17No inside scoop?
00:18I'm sorry.
00:19I don't have the scoop yet.
00:21But I mean, the main goal of the show, and what we've really discussed with the writers
00:24and Kenya Barris, is to portray college in its most authentic form.
00:29Of course, like in Black-ish, some things are exaggerated for the sake of comedy, but
00:35it's really based in the sense of reality, and I think that's what we really want for
00:39Grown-ish, this ability to tell a story.
00:41Now, of course, there will be a lot happening to the main character that may not happen to
00:45every student, but we want to address the issues that students deal with, whether it
00:50is, of course, like you're saying, peer pressure, or figuring out who you are, and figuring out...
00:55I mean, Zoe is a big fish in a small pond, and so there is this, what you notice even
01:00in that first episode when she goes to visit her college, is that she's unsure of herself,
01:05and it's one of the first times you see her unsure of herself.
01:08And it's important to not gloss over that as like, oh yeah, well, she'll be confident
01:12again.
01:13All the time, right.
01:14Telling the story of what it means to be a young girl, what it means to be a part of
01:17Gen Z, and what it means to be on a college campus right now.
01:20Do you feel any pressure?
01:22Because Black-ish does such a great job of tackling issues, much like it sounds like
01:25Grown-ish will do, in such a great, funny, responsible way.
01:29Do you feel any pressure to live up to the success of Black-ish?
01:32I mean, what's lovely is that we still have the same amazing team behind it.
01:36Of course, it's a different writers' room, but I really don't feel the pressure, because
01:40what I love is that, of course, Grown-ish is an extension of Black-ish, but at the same
01:44time, it's going to have a different feel.
01:47And I love this idea that it's in all of the writers' minds that they want to make it relevant,
01:51because that's what has made Black-ish so crucial to just the TV landscape, this idea of it's
01:57a telling of our reality, and that it's based in what's happening now.
02:01And so, I think that's something that we all are very aware of walking into this.
