The Great Pottery Throw Down - Season 9 Episode 5
Transcript
00:01Hello there. It's week five and our eight potters are off on their holly bobs.
00:08They're making retro souvenir sets.
00:11Now, I have a surprise for us but I haven't told the judges yet so shh.
00:16Oh boys!
00:18Oh hi.
00:20Oh hey, yeah. Guys, I have discovered where there's like a really cool pot that you can look at.
00:27I know you love to look at pots. Yeah, just follow me. Really cool pot. Just stick your head in there.
00:37Welcome to the Great Pottery Throwdown.
00:42Where's the pot, Siobhan?
00:44Surprise!
00:46Last time, release the flames!
00:50The potters got all fired up in Raku week.
00:53Oh Kayleigh, it's looking great.
00:55And whilst Emily's mother and baby Lynx took the crown.
00:58It's absolutely brilliant.
01:01Whitney's great white sharks didn't measure up.
01:04Can't find it. It's too small.
01:06And he became the fourth person to leave the pottery.
01:09This time!
01:10I've just completely run out of time for this.
01:12Life's a beach.
01:13I made a couple but they're not quite right.
01:16As the potters serve up seaside souvenir sets.
01:19You can't go to the beach and not have an ice cream.
01:22I've got to put a seagull on a bell.
01:23There's some words you never thought you'd hear.
01:25Then turn and trim the trio of candlesticks.
01:29Who will have an easy ride?
01:31Who doesn't like a donkey? Come on.
01:33And who...
01:34Panic!
01:35...will get washed away?
01:36If anybody's not started the piercing yet, I'd advise them to.
01:39Because this thing's going to take ages.
01:41Okay, jeez.
01:42We're all in the room to make it.
01:59So just start up the fire.
02:02It's down to the wire.
02:04It's week five and we're halfway through the competition.
02:16Exciting, yeah.
02:17I wasn't entirely convinced I'd get halfway through on the first day when I saw how good everybody was.
02:22But here I am.
02:23So yeah, I must be all right.
02:25And the potters are going retro with a collection of kitsch keepsakes.
02:29Souvenir set, yeah.
02:30It's going to be an interesting throw.
02:33Souvenirs.
02:34To be fair, I love a bit of tap.
02:36Yeah, as my husband would call it.
02:39I'm not really a knick-knack kind of person.
02:41I mean, I've got knick-knacks, but most of mine are kind of like 80s, 90s, like retro gaming TV nerdy stuff.
02:48Oh, hi, neighbour.
02:50Hey.
02:51Hello.
02:52Hello.
02:53Excited to make.
02:54It'd be nice to throw.
02:55It's been like a while throwing something that you feel like in control of.
02:59Why is there so much space now?
03:01I think this week will be really cool because of the whole retro theme.
03:05I'm going for the 1950s because my mum was born in the 50s.
03:09So yeah, doing this for my mum.
03:11I do love her.
03:12She's such a good egg.
03:14I feel so good.
03:15Welcome back, Potters.
03:18Congratulations on making it this far.
03:21For your main make challenge this week, the judges would like you to make a retro souvenir set dedicated to your favourite UK seaside town.
03:31And to explain what the hell that is, we have the judges.
03:36Well, your set should include a tankard, a bell, a large ribbon plate and one other item, either a conch shell, a clog or a wheelbarrow.
03:45We're looking for fun retro souvenirs, so make us smile.
03:49Now, we're asking you to throw and hand build in this challenge, as well as give us some surface decoration by way of sprigs and piercing.
03:58Now, this is a practical challenge, so the tankard needs to be usable, the plate should have ribbon through it, and the bell needs to ring.
04:06Alright then, Potters, you have six hours to make and refine your retro souvenir set, and your time starts now!
04:17Who doesn't love a retro souvenir set?
04:20Just trying to get all my weights together, so I'm out of breath, just to work out.
04:23That's the bell and the tank is.
04:25Yes.
04:26The only time I've ever made a set of anything was week one.
04:28I'm lucky if I've ever made two mugs that match.
04:31Rich, halfway through.
04:34I know, it's almost unbelievable, isn't it? The weeks are just barrelling past.
04:38And what a brilliant challenge, you know, a souvenir challenge.
04:42On the face of it, when you think of this challenge, you think, okay, a mug, a plate and a bell.
04:47Easy, no problem.
04:49But actually, although we kind of look around this table and there's a lot of kind of recognisable objects,
04:54there's lots of technical aspects to this build, isn't there?
04:57Yeah.
04:58Particularly on the plate.
04:59Yeah, absolutely.
05:00You know, we've asked that they use that traditional ribbon-style plate.
05:04Yeah.
05:05Ordinarily, plates have a lot of stress going through the rim, and so anything you do to undermine that core structure could potentially cause problems.
05:12Yeah.
05:13And if they're applying a big sprig onto the tankard, it doesn't want to be distorted too much, does it?
05:18No.
05:19And it's so easy to trap a bit of air underneath it, and then you're open to the risk of it peeling away or popping off.
05:24Yeah.
05:25And they want to be a cohesive set.
05:26So whatever UK resort that they choose, all that is a great opportunity for decoration, isn't it?
05:32Yeah.
05:33I'm just keen to see the stories that they tell through their choices.
05:36Yeah.
05:37We want to have a bit of fun with this, and we want to have a bit of a smile at the end of it.
05:40But they've got to remember, it's week five now, and we want to be impressed.
05:44Hi, lovey.
05:45Oh, hello.
05:46Hi, Andrew.
05:47Well, tell us about your design, if you can.
05:49Yeah, I will.
05:50So I'm doing Swanage.
05:51Swanage.
05:52I used to go on holiday here with my family when we were kids.
05:54My dad was born in Lulworth, which is just down the coast.
05:56Oh, yeah.
05:57Lovely.
05:58They grew up there, and so we used to go on family holidays down there.
05:59So I'm doing that.
06:00So there's Swanage Bay.
06:01Dirtle door.
06:02So this is the gag.
06:03So that's the dirtle door, and that's a bell.
06:06It's the dirtle doorbell.
06:08Ah.
06:09Genius.
06:10That's what this programme deserves.
06:12That's right.
06:13That's what I've been looking for all along.
06:15Yeah.
06:16Andrew will sculpt the famous rock formation
06:18to form the handle of his dirtle doorbell,
06:20and it, along with his commemorative conch shell and plate,
06:23will be decorated with bold picture postcard illustrations
06:26of the Jurassic Coast, while his souvenir tankard,
06:29on the other hand, will be dedicated to someone very special.
06:33Ooh, a lady.
06:35This lady is my granny.
06:37Just love this photo.
06:38That's my granny in 1936.
06:39And my granny's a really important part of my childhood.
06:41My mum wasn't very well when we were little,
06:42and she was the one who brought us all up.
06:44Wow.
06:45And there she is, in the sea, paddling.
06:46Oh!
06:47And that's about as far in the sea as we could ever get her.
06:50And how is all this going to be decorated and illustrated?
06:53So I've got a sprig mould of my granny,
06:55with a nice ring of shells around it,
06:57and taking a dip in Dorset.
06:58Yeah, lovely.
06:59I mean, I haven't sprig moulded before,
07:00so I just don't want those sprigs to pop,
07:01so I do need to be careful.
07:02That's a new skill.
07:03Well, we'll leave you to us.
07:04Yeah, we will.
07:05Best of luck.
07:06I look forward to seeing you.
07:07Yeah, good.
07:08Cheers.
07:09Thanks a lot.
07:10See you later.
07:11Andrew might be planning to capture his granny's pensive paddling
07:13off the Dorset coastline,
07:14but he's not the only potter to have been seduced by Swanage.
07:17So I'm doing Swanage, so very similar to Andrew,
07:20because he's doing Durdle Door,
07:21which is literally just down the road.
07:23So it's a bit of like the Battle of Dorset, basically.
07:27Hoping to emerge the darling of Dorset,
07:29Bill's sprig decorated bell plate and tankard
07:32will be joined by a hand sculpted wheelbarrow
07:34filled with items familiar to family holidays past and present.
07:38Who else went on these holidays?
07:40So mum, dad, brother, grandma.
07:43Oh, the whole lot here.
07:44Yeah, the whole lot of us.
07:45You don't need to...
07:47You know, no-one will know.
07:48Do you like going on holidays with your family?
07:50I mean...
07:51Yes.
07:52Good, good answer.
07:53Strong answer.
07:54There's just a certain person.
07:55Lie though, right?
07:56Person that's...
07:57Annoying?
07:58Annoying.
07:59Who?
08:00It's...
08:01Someone younger than me.
08:02A brother?
08:04Mm-hm.
08:05Oh, younger brothers are the worst.
08:07Yes, Teogh, I said that.
08:10Andrew and Bill might be focused
08:12on a family favourite holiday destination.
08:14But Ann Harrod is happier a little closer to home.
08:17Right, so I've chosen my seaside town.
08:19It's a place in South Wales called Porthcourt.
08:21Oh, yeah.
08:22It's about ten minutes away from where I grew up.
08:24And it has the fairground there.
08:26It still has it now.
08:27And it's been there, I think, since the early 1900s.
08:29Right.
08:30And my nana's mum used to work there in the summer holidays
08:32on the ghost train.
08:33Wow. Wow.
08:34So it's like a little nod to my nan
08:37and to mine and my siblings' childhood.
08:40Very happy memories.
08:41Ann Harrod's ode to the beach and funfair of Porthcourt
08:44will see her bell transformed into a vintage helter-skelter,
08:47while her tankard and plate will act as a canvas
08:50for her 1950s picture-postcard-style decoration.
08:54How are you feeling about the scalloping and the piercing
08:56on the rim of your plate?
08:57Yeah, if it works nicely, I'll be happy.
09:00It's just four things that have to be done quite well, isn't it?
09:01Yeah, that's the name of the game.
09:02Yeah, that is the name of the game.
09:03Panic!
09:04With their souvenir sets comprising of multiple pieces...
09:05So much to do.
09:06I've got a list in my pocket.
09:07Here goes tankard, bell, plate, shell.
09:08That's how I'm remembering it.
09:09The potters have opted to start with the simpler forms first.
09:10I'm working on the tankard here.
09:11It's quite small.
09:12So I'm just making it slightly bigger so all the sprigs
09:13can fit on comfortably.
09:14Finn, what height do you go on?
09:15I'm working on the tankard here.
09:16I'm working on the tankard here.
09:17It's quite small, so I'm just making it slightly bigger
09:18so all the sprigs can fit on comfortably.
09:19Finn, what height do you go on?
09:21Mine's like 15 and a half.
09:22Mine's 17.
09:23It's just huge.
09:24And whilst the tankard is an exercise in robust throwing...
09:26Yeah, I think I'm happy with that.
09:27It's very chunky, but that's pretty good, I'd say.
09:28The bell is the complete opposite.
09:29The bell needs to be quite fine.
09:30It's got a ring.
09:31Ding-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling.
09:47So inspiring now.
09:49Yeah.
09:50Is that what it's meant to sound like on judging day?
09:52What happens if you go really thick?
09:53Is it going to be like a really dull sound?
09:57But throwing such a fine form is not without risk.
10:02Such a simple thing, man. I've got four bells in now.
10:06I'm trying to be too delicate, but I shouldn't really...
10:08My guess is that the thinner it is, the nicer ding-a-ling it'll be.
10:12Yeah, looking for a lovely ding-a-ling.
10:14If he manages to get it ringing,
10:16Naveed's bell will sound out over a set dedicated
10:19not only to his hometown of Folkestone,
10:21but also to wife Charlotte,
10:23who will finally get immortalised in one of his makes.
10:25My wife was like,
10:27well, you've dedicated the first week to your mates
10:29and one to your mum.
10:31She was like, are you going to do one for me?
10:32And I was like, well...
10:33She got me into pottery in the first place.
10:35She bought me my own wheel.
10:37She forced me to enter this competition.
10:40So I think it's only fair that I dedicate some to her.
10:44While Naveed might be hoping to craft the most delicate of ding-a-lings...
10:48..Kaley has a very different vision for hers.
10:52And you've got Trump here.
10:54He's looking well.
10:57He's looking better than he has.
10:58It's not him, he's smiling and being kind.
11:02The trunks of Kayleigh's unlikely bell muse
11:05will be painted red and white
11:07to echo the souvenir sticks of rock
11:09that were a staple of family holidays to paint in.
11:12But there's one keepsake that remains a bit of a mystery.
11:15Had you heard of a ribbon plate before this?
11:17Do you want... No, I did not.
11:19And I love a bit of tan.
11:21Oh.
11:21And I've never come across that type of plate in my life.
11:25Yeah, you've never seen it.
11:26No.
11:27Do you think they're making it up?
11:28I think they're lying.
11:29I think they are.
11:31I'm just making a plate now.
11:34By far the trickiest element of their souvenir set is the plate.
11:38If this goes bad, it goes bad, it's fine.
11:40Its wide, flat form is held in delicate balance
11:43and must be carefully managed if it's to retain its shape.
11:47Throwing a plate's really hard.
11:48You don't want any warping.
11:50There's obviously a piece this big could really crack through.
11:53Plates can be kind of prone to having S cracks.
11:57If it's not compressed enough, it tends to pull apart.
12:01But for some...
12:02You're witnessing the third plate I've ever thrown.
12:04This is a journey into the unknown.
12:06I had never thrown a plate before I saw this challenge.
12:09Finn's fledgling foray into plate production
12:11will be dedicated to his adopted home of Falmouth.
12:15He'll marry sprigwork and detailed illustration
12:17in an attempt to capture a sense of the town's rich maritime history.
12:22My main kind of reference materials
12:25were the 40s, 50s railway posters.
12:28Right. Oh, I see.
12:29And sort of children's book illustrations of that era as well.
12:32Famous Five kind of thing.
12:33Yeah, pretty much.
12:34I mean, we've seen your decorative skills, so...
12:36It'll be similar to how I did week one,
12:38so that it'll be kind of build-up of watercolour
12:40and then some black line work.
12:42You know, you're Potter of the Week,
12:44the week that it was a set
12:45and there was illustration work, so...
12:47Yeah, fingers crossed.
12:48Fingers crossed.
12:49Fingers crossed.
12:50Yeah, well, look, we'll let you get on with it.
12:52Good luck.
12:52Good luck.
12:53See you later on.
12:58Hey!
13:00Halfway through, Potters.
13:02You're halfway through.
13:03I don't want to get lifted.
13:04Take these to the drain room.
13:06With bells, tankards and plates
13:09all needing to dry before they can be embellished,
13:11the Potters put the wheels to one side
13:13and turn their attention to the extras
13:15that will set their sets apart.
13:17I'm just making my conch shell.
13:19I made a couple, but they're not quite right.
13:23And whilst most are busy building souvenir shells...
13:26I just need to make this look less like a croissant
13:28and more like a shell.
13:30Two Potters are taking a different tack.
13:32I'm doing the wheelbarrow
13:33and I'm just doing the tyre now.
13:35Just making this up as I go.
13:38I am putting my wheelbarrow together,
13:41my ice cream cart,
13:42trying to make sure all the joints are sealed.
13:45Hopefully I get some ice cream cones in there as well.
13:48You can't go to the beach and not have an ice cream.
13:51Elham's wheelbarrow-cum ice cream cart
13:53will sit in a set that pays tribute to her mother.
13:56and a memorable trip they all took to Whitley Bay.
13:59I think just having kids myself
14:00and now seeing even the days that my mum must have had
14:04just as a single mum, like on her own,
14:07it's just a lot, a lot.
14:08So I really appreciate the fact that her and a friend,
14:11as two women, just rounded the kids up,
14:13took us away.
14:14Two women and seven kids.
14:15Wow.
14:16But they took us and I just really appreciate that, I guess.
14:19That's gorgeous.
14:20What a lovely reason to have a souvenir set.
14:24Yeah.
14:24Well, I had to do something
14:25because I'd never keep a souvenir set like that,
14:27if I'm honest.
14:28Well, no, it's a bit, um...
14:29It's a bit ugly.
14:30It's a bit ugly, isn't it?
14:31It's a bit ugly, but my mum will like it.
14:32Oh, she has a brilliant taste.
14:34It's not ugly at all.
14:36While Elham and Bill
14:37might be ploughing a lonesome furrow
14:39with their wheelbarrows...
14:40What have you got in your wheelbarrow?
14:41A bucket in me spare, in me towel.
14:43I've got an ammonite,
14:45a hat and a grab.
14:46All the things you'd need
14:47on a lovely day out in Swanage.
14:49One potter is busy building
14:51the cornerstone of the Kitsch keepsake.
14:54So, I'm just making the clog.
14:57So, it's kind of based on my clogs
14:59from when I was about 10 years old.
15:01They were handmade for me.
15:03And, um...
15:04Yeah.
15:05So, I did a little bit of clog dancing
15:06and I actually did in the seaside town
15:09that I'm doing for this,
15:10which is Sidmouth.
15:12While Emily's souvenir shoe
15:13will sit in tribute to the time
15:15she clogged up Sidmouth's seafront,
15:17the beach and clifftop walks
15:19will be represented in her tankard and plate.
15:21And the handle of her bell
15:22is a nod to another
15:23of the town's tourist attractions.
15:26There is a donkey rescue in Sidmouth.
15:29There is.
15:30And my great-auntie,
15:32she used to go every single day
15:34to go and feed ginger biscuits to a donkey.
15:36Wow.
15:36And about a year before she died,
15:38she told my mum that, um,
15:39she'd, like, won a load of money
15:42in some weird sweepstake thing.
15:44Right.
15:45Anyway, shortly after she died,
15:47we heard on the radio
15:48that a very large,
15:49I think it was 1.2 million,
15:50had been donated to a donkey sanctuary
15:53and with the bequest
15:55that the donkeys be given
15:56ginger biscuits every day.
15:58Wow.
15:58Yeah.
15:59What?
15:59Whoa.
16:00Wow.
16:02This is the most...
16:03Wow.
16:03And you went...
16:04Oh.
16:06That is a lot of biscuits.
16:08That's a lot of biscuits.
16:09That is a lot of biscuits.
16:09I'm sure they're still getting biscuits,
16:11like, 20 years later.
16:12Oh, yeah, yeah.
16:20One hour left, potters.
16:22One hour le...
16:22Who's doing that?
16:25Yeah, that's very dry.
16:26With their pieces dry to leather hard,
16:29the potters can begin
16:30to trim off excess clay
16:31and sculpt their final forms.
16:33It does look very satisfying.
16:35Yeah, do you like this bit?
16:36I do, I do.
16:37Do you want to do it?
16:37I do, but I'm not allowed to.
16:40I'm just trimming my belt
16:41so it has a nice curve
16:43and I can attach the handle.
16:45Just trimming the tankard.
16:47I don't want it to be, you know,
16:48too thin
16:49because I need to get sprigs on it.
16:51And while this is a risky process,
16:53no matter which piece they're working on...
16:55Absolutely can take trimming and turning too far.
16:57Depending on how thick your base is,
16:59you can go through.
17:00With ribbon holes needing to be cut around the rim,
17:03the plates...
17:03If anybody's not started the piercing yet,
17:05I'd advise them to
17:06because this thing's going to take action.
17:09...are particularly perilous.
17:11I mean, I am being careful.
17:12Probably more careful than I've ever been.
17:14That's why I'm whispering.
17:16Especially as each cut weakens the tension
17:19that keeps the plate in one piece.
17:21It is quite a delicate part to do.
17:24There's a good chance all this could warp.
17:26Any kind of thing that you've pierced,
17:28there's always risks of cracking,
17:30especially in a plate which is already
17:32a bit more likely to crack anyway
17:35in a different place.
17:36These little dots are where the ribbon's going to go.
17:40I'm just doing it all by eye.
17:41I could do it accurately, but that's not my style.
17:45I'm really enjoying it.
17:47It's fiddly, but it's quite satisfying.
17:50My mum would love this.
17:52Look at all the piercing you've done.
17:54I know.
17:55Isn't it wonderful?
17:56Actually, your ears aren't pierced.
17:58No, they're not.
17:59They were for many years.
18:02Are you often to pierce them?
18:03Yeah.
18:04Look.
18:05Just do that.
18:06I think my ears are a bit more difficult
18:09than leather hard.
18:10Although maybe not.
18:13Potters, 30 minutes left.
18:15Oh, goodness me.
18:17There's nothing I can do now,
18:18just apart from work, as hard as possible.
18:20With plates pierced and tankards and bells shaped.
18:23Say it like that.
18:24Attention turns to sprig work and embellishments.
18:27So the bell, I've got to put, like, the slide going around,
18:31and then I've got to do the fixture for the bell on the inside.
18:34There's lots of bits to do.
18:35This sprig is, um, the White Cliffs of Folkestone and Dover.
18:39What brought you to Folkestone?
18:41Well, a friend, actually, a friend moved there,
18:43and she said she loved it so much she wanted to die there.
18:47Has she?
18:49No.
18:50But while sprigs can be quick to apply,
18:53the bigger they are, the greater the danger.
18:55I've just got to try and make sure that there's no air
18:57and not too much moisture behind it.
19:01Oh, ****.
19:02I think I've got air behind it.
19:05Can you feel it?
19:06Have you...
19:07Yeah.
19:09I have.
19:10I'm just pushing air.
19:11I'm just pushing air out now.
19:12Yeah, I know.
19:12I think it needs to come off, doesn't it?
19:14OK.
19:16Yeah.
19:18She's come off.
19:20Massive pocket of air in there.
19:22So it would have gone bang.
19:24Totally would have gone bang.
19:25What have you done to Granny?
19:26Granny can't have come off.
19:28I checked with Bill.
19:29Bill's good on sprigs.
19:30Yeah?
19:30And he came in and had a little poke.
19:31And he said there's air.
19:32And he said there's an air in there.
19:33I know.
19:34So we got her off.
19:35Unless, of course, he's trying to sabotage you.
19:37He wouldn't, Bill.
19:38No, he wouldn't.
19:39That's the problem with the oil.
19:40That's the problem with my nose.
19:41I just wouldn't.
19:41No, he wouldn't.
19:41Would you sabotage him?
19:43Oh!
19:44No, I wouldn't.
19:44No, I wouldn't.
19:53Potters, you have ten minutes left.
19:55Ten minutes.
19:56Oh, my God.
19:57I thought it was going to be five minutes then.
19:58I would be like...
20:00I'm just making a set of stairs for the regrettably complicated handle for the tankard.
20:09I'm just embossing my design onto the plate, which will save me a bit of time in the decorating stage.
20:18You'd never know she was there.
20:19Go on.
20:20There.
20:20I just have to paint Granny on.
20:21I'm putting sea kale around the handle.
20:25Is that terrible?
20:26Does that look absolutely horrific?
20:28I'm making some little ice cream cones to go on my ice cream cart.
20:33There's so much to do and so little time.
20:36What's left to do?
20:37Quite a bit.
20:39What have I got?
20:40A couple of holes in a plate and I've got to put a seagull on a bell.
20:44There's some words you never thought you'd hear.
20:46I've scrapped the crab claw as my handle because we never managed to finish it.
20:51So it's better to have a regular one on than nothing at all.
20:55At this moment in time, we have a bell.
20:59Whether it works is a thing that I'm trying not to think about too much.
21:02This is a last minute donkey handle.
21:04This is horribly rushed.
21:06I've just completely run out of time for this.
21:09How long have we got left?
21:10Potters, you've two minutes left.
21:12I'm doing all right.
21:13Basically, just getting every bit of detail I can with every minute that we've got.
21:19Naveed, how are we doing?
21:21Just plating up now.
21:23Is that everything, Bill?
21:25I think that's everything.
21:25You were always my favourite.
21:27You were always my favourite.
21:28You were always my favourite.
21:31Ten seconds, my lovely Potters.
21:35Seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
21:42Woo-hoo!
21:43Woo!
21:43Woo-hoo!
21:46That was hard.
21:50That was hard.
21:51That was just too much to do.
21:54It was just like, way too much to be thinking about.
21:56Oh, my God.
21:58That was a bit manic, wasn't it?
21:59Goodness me, all got a bit stressful at the end.
22:02I just wanted to try and show that I could make a sprig,
22:04and I showed that I can't make a sprig,
22:06and therefore, I'll paint her instead.
22:09I went really well,
22:11but that piercing took such a long time to do,
22:14so I was really concentrating on making a well-rounded piece.
22:17I can't believe it.
22:18That's week five half done,
22:20and actually looking forward to doing the decorating and stuff.
22:24I am happy with the throws,
22:26and I think with the bell, it's like,
22:27oh, God, it looks so sparse,
22:28but colour and decoration can do a lot of different things,
22:31just hoping everything survives.
22:41My instinct is telling me it's not a wheel.
22:44The Potters are back.
22:45Oh, it's a wheel.
22:47It's a wheel.
22:47And ready to face the Mystery Throwdown Challenge.
22:55Welcome back, Potters, for your second challenge.
22:58And this week, you will be making and turning candlestick holders.
23:05Oh.
23:05And to show us how it's done is Master Potter himself, Rich Miller.
23:09Please take the wheel.
23:10Oh.
23:15So, you've got three leather hard cones.
23:17These are solid lumps of clay,
23:19so that's when you would usually turn clay, when it's leather hard.
23:22Pop it onto the wheel and tap it into centre.
23:25Then you'll pin it down.
23:27And then you're predominantly going to be using two turning tools.
23:31So these profiles, OK?
23:34Follow the order that I'm doing this,
23:35because if you start at the bottom and work your way up,
23:38there's every chance you could go off centre by the time you get to the top.
23:41And I'm going quite slowly, quite carefully.
23:43I'm just roughing out the top, but I'm leaving that top solid.
23:47I want to roughly mark out four even lumps.
23:53And what I'm going to then do is use this metal tool.
23:55You're then going to dig that tool in.
23:58And what you will then essentially be doing is turning to those lines.
24:01I'm now going to start forming that first shape.
24:06So I'm just working my way down.
24:09And I'm taking...
24:11Oh, that was a satisfying one.
24:13Just having a moment.
24:14Steady, Rich. Steady.
24:16When you take this away,
24:18you're wanting to keep that profile of the candlestick.
24:21So you want to retain that rough shape,
24:23but as you're shaping each individual ball.
24:26As you go through this clay,
24:28it's getting progressively softer towards the centre.
24:31So it will have a habit of just digging in.
24:35And if it digs in, it'll take the material away,
24:38but you then can't put back on.
24:39But then once you start refining the shape,
24:41you just want to slow down a bit
24:42and be a bit more conscious of where your hands are going.
24:45But, you know, it's all about just controlling the tool, really.
24:48And just check you're happy with the shape of the balls
24:51and that they're as smooth and even as possible.
24:54I mean, the top is slightly off centre,
24:56but I chose to centre the bulk of the body
24:58and leave that marginally off
25:00because it's important that all of this central section
25:02is really well centred.
25:04And then lastly, I'm just going to take the other end
25:07of this same turning tool
25:08and I'm just going to plunge that down in the centre.
25:13In order for it to be able to hold a candle,
25:15you have to make a recess.
25:16So you do that right at the last minute.
25:19Peel that clay away
25:20and then very gently carve off the last little piece of base.
25:25But keep in mind that you haven't got it pinned down
25:28to anything at this stage.
25:30So don't go too quickly with the wheel
25:32because it'll just fly off.
25:36What I'm looking for is really nice proportioned balls.
25:40Four on the big one, three on the medium one
25:44and two on the small one.
25:45All of the turning is very clean and as centred as possible.
25:48You know, this is about kind of speed and accuracy.
25:52All right, now, this will be blind judge,
25:54so you know what this means.
25:56Get out of here!
25:57Good luck.
25:58Enjoy it.
25:59Thanks.
26:00Potters, you have been given 20 minutes
26:04to make a trio of candlestick holders
26:08and your time starts.
26:11Now, remove the hessian.
26:14OK.
26:16Oh, that's heavy.
26:17It's pretty centred.
26:19It's not far off.
26:20Just getting the proportions right
26:22is what's sort of the most worrying thing, I think.
26:23Halfway.
26:25With no ruler.
26:26Would you say that's halfway?
26:28It's not quite right.
26:29Well, that's all over the shop.
26:31Neat and precise.
26:33Two words that aren't always in my vocabulary.
26:35Kayleigh, is this a kind of second challenge that you like?
26:39He made it look so easy.
26:41He does make it look easy.
26:42I know.
26:43So there should be four balls in this big one.
26:45I think getting even spacing and a nice curveness,
26:48that's what I think is going to be the challenge.
26:50The prettiest part to this challenge
26:52is just getting it done full stop.
26:55Slow and silly wins racing this one.
26:57Calm, even strokes.
26:58It's a bit like swimming.
26:59It's like peeling an apple.
27:00It's quite satisfying.
27:02The speed of that wheel.
27:04Is it fast or slow?
27:05It's going really fast.
27:07Oh.
27:08Shall I look around a lot?
27:09No.
27:10Never look back.
27:10I like this challenge so far.
27:13It's nice, but we haven't had a half-time pull yet, so...
27:16You're halfway through, Potters.
27:18How is that halfway through?
27:20Have to make the wheel go even faster, then.
27:22And now I've got to do three, isn't it?
27:25Three.
27:26How's Bill got one off already?
27:27I'd need to hollow the knob out in the top.
27:29I don't know what kind of size of candle they want in.
27:32Can I put a bursty candle in there?
27:35Ah!
27:36Wonky, wonky.
27:37Oh, that is a mess.
27:38Is anyone, as a matter of interest,
27:41on their third of their trio of candlestick holders?
27:45Not yet.
27:46Me.
27:46Because you've only five minutes left.
27:49Jeez Louise.
27:50Don't shout at me.
27:52This is time.
27:53It follows natural order.
27:55Five minutes.
27:56Oh, my God.
27:58Last few minutes.
27:58I'm just going super fast on this one.
28:00OK, well, here we go.
28:01Let's do two really, really quick ones.
28:03I feel like the pressure is on because I should be able to do this.
28:08I've done two, so just crack out this one and then the job's a good one.
28:14I can relax.
28:15Lick your finger and smooth that over for me, Siobhan.
28:17Thanks, love.
28:18Teamwork.
28:20This is the last one, the small one.
28:23This is just going to be a bit of a Hail Mary, I think, on this, to be honest.
28:26Never turn with the wheel this fast, but it's not blown off the wheel yet.
28:30Oh, my God.
28:32And that is where I really need to be gentle.
28:37Potter's, you've one minute left now.
28:40Oh, it's OK.
28:41OK.
28:42Bloody ow.
28:44I managed to get a little bit more of a bulbous shape.
28:48Oh, no.
28:49Kayleigh, you're going wild.
28:50You've become this sort of wild clay woman.
28:54Ten seconds left.
28:56Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
29:04Step away from the wheel.
29:05Put your candlestick holder things down.
29:10I don't want to touch them.
29:10All right, Potters, would you please bring up your trio of candlestick holders up to your wearboard?
29:19The judges will be looking for a set of three cleanly turned, even and well-proportioned candlestick holders.
29:26OK, Potters, let's bring back the judges for some judging.
29:30Oh, boys.
29:32You've got...
29:33Look at this.
29:36Are you proud?
29:37Amazing.
29:38Yeah, really great effort.
29:40So, first set.
29:42We've got nice cone shapes.
29:45I'd say the middle size, the rounded elements seem a little bit flatter.
29:50The cups look good and even.
29:51The ridge at the base could have been a little bit more pronounced as well.
29:55Yeah, the candle well is nicely finished off, isn't it?
29:57Yeah, nicely finished, yeah.
29:58Yeah, great.
29:59Excellent.
30:01Someone's been boasting.
30:03One, two, three, four.
30:04Oh, yeah, we've got a fifth.
30:05So, you know, extra one thrown in there for good measure.
30:08It looks like the cups have gone a little bit wayward at the top, and it looks like the smallest one is missing a cup at the top.
30:16Moving on.
30:16Wow.
30:19Yeah.
30:19Very pronounced turning on these ones.
30:22Yeah.
30:22Kind of lost that sort of cone shape slightly on the big one, but really lovely, confident turning on that set of three.
30:29Really lovely turning on the large one.
30:34Really beautifully rounded curves to it.
30:36Yeah.
30:37Slightly lost the third ball on the middle one.
30:40Yeah.
30:40But very confident turning.
30:42How nice.
30:45These look pretty good.
30:46That's really good.
30:47I mean, there's real accuracy between the cups.
30:50They all match very well, and the proportions of each level is great.
30:53Really nice.
30:54I mean, this is lovely.
30:55Yeah.
30:55Really accurate turning there, and it feels like a really coherent set.
30:58There's a real set there, yeah.
31:00They really match.
31:00Absolutely, yeah.
31:01Okay.
31:01The proportions are pretty good on the large one.
31:06The small one is perhaps a little bit upright.
31:08It's lost some of that curve.
31:10It's quite straight-sided.
31:11Moving on to seven.
31:14Really nice.
31:16Very clean.
31:17Nice set between the three.
31:18The cups are all matching.
31:20The width here is very nice.
31:22The proportions between each section are very good.
31:25The profile of that is really lovely.
31:27Very, very accurate.
31:28It just looks like on that middle one, perhaps, could have snipped it in a bit and taken an extra bit off that base.
31:34But overall, really, really neat, really tidy.
31:38Okay, last one.
31:40Wow, beautiful.
31:41This bottom section on the last one, perhaps, is a little mean, but the cups are all matching.
31:48The bases are, like, super clean.
31:50Really lovely.
31:50And that lovely rim on the base is beautifully defined.
31:54Yeah, really great effort.
31:55The judges will now rank from bottom to top.
31:58In eighth position, we have this one.
32:03Who's this?
32:03Yeah.
32:04Oh, Kayleigh.
32:04I did actually really love it.
32:06I'm glad you enjoyed it.
32:07But, you know, you've missed that cup out.
32:10In seventh position, we have this one.
32:13Who is this?
32:14Ah, Angharad.
32:15It would be nice to have seen a bit more definition on each individual curved element.
32:19But, you know, great effort.
32:22Naveed is sixth.
32:23Andrew fifth.
32:24In fourth place is Finn.
32:26And Elham is third.
32:27So, in second position, we have this one here.
32:33Who's this?
32:34Emily.
32:34Really beautiful turning.
32:36You know, lovely shape and proportions across all three.
32:40So, in first place, we have this one.
32:43Bill.
32:43Well done, Bill.
32:44Nice work.
32:47Nice one.
32:47Yeah, I just got in the zone and just sort of did some fancy turning.
32:52I think you just hone in, you sort of, you get lost in the turn.
32:56Bill.
32:57Big hands.
32:59I really enjoyed the process, actually.
33:02It's very therapeutic.
33:04But, yeah, just should have gone a lot faster.
33:08Like, I think it all rests on the main make now because seven out of eight is not a safe place to be.
33:16Ready for decorating.
33:18Seaside ready.
33:20I mean, get me a deck chair.
33:27It's day two.
33:29And after a 24-hour bisque firing, Princess is laying out the souvenir sets ready for decoration.
33:35But the potters won't know if they've survived the heat of the kiln until they lift the hessian.
33:40I've got a few worries about making sure the sprigs are still on and, you know, no S-cracks or anything.
33:45I am just approaching it in a way of to try and enjoy decorating.
33:51Expect the worst and hope for the best.
33:53That's the motto that I should probably get tattooed on me somewhere.
33:57Welcome back, potters.
34:02Now, as you can see, your retro souvenir set has been bisque fired and is lying under the hessian, just dying to be decorated.
34:09Judges, any advice for our potters?
34:11We've given you three and a half hours to decorate your four pieces.
34:15Now, that may sound generous, but the centre of your ribbon plate needs to feature an illustration of your chosen seaside town.
34:23We're looking for artistic detail here, so use your time wisely.
34:27As this is a stoneware body, it'll be fired to a higher temperature, which will affect the density of the finished colour.
34:32So, bear that in mind when you're decorating, so that you give us the finish you originally intended for your set.
34:39All right, potters, you have been given a range of oxides and glazes and three and a half hours to use them.
34:44And your time starts now.
34:47Remove the hessian.
34:50Hmm.
34:50Oh, it's looking great.
34:53I'm loving it.
34:55I mean, I can't really fault it.
34:56I think this is massive.
34:58I mean, it fits me because it's obviously, this is my size.
35:00It's fired absolutely fine.
35:02I've got one little kind of crack around one of my sprigs.
35:07But apart from that, I've got to say, it could have been a lot worse.
35:12While everyone's happy to see their souvenir sets have survived the kiln.
35:16Cool.
35:17Right.
35:17No one is more relieved than Andrew.
35:21How are you doing, Andrew?
35:22I'm really well.
35:22I'm really pleased it all survived.
35:24Tankard.
35:26Probably can just see where granny was, but it was really badly made, so I cut it off at the last minute.
35:31Cut your losses quite literally.
35:32So I'm going to have to paint that instead, but it'll be okay.
35:34So what is your plan with the decoration?
35:36I mean, the plan with the decoration is to try and kind of unify them all with a similar scene or similar colour palette.
35:41So really graphic, clean lines.
35:43Yeah, that kind of railway poster style.
35:45Yeah, and really kind of distinctive and recognisably 19, sort of 30s, 40s.
35:50Great.
35:51Lots of big surfaces to decorate.
35:52And that's the thing.
35:53Yeah.
35:53I mean, I already feel that time is ticking.
35:56Completely.
35:56That's the nature of ceramics, isn't it?
35:58Yeah.
35:58It all takes an age.
35:59Exactly.
35:59I will leave you to it.
36:01Thanks, Rich.
36:01Sounds amazing.
36:02All right, see you later.
36:02Bye.
36:04The potters have been given an array of underglazes and oxides to help bring their sets to life.
36:10So I'm literally painting, like, a scene on fourth call.
36:15It's, like, basically a pin-up girl who's been snapped by a crab as she's crabbing in the rock pools.
36:21But with four such disparate items needing decoration, it's crucial the potters have a plan to create cohesion across the set.
36:29The time that I've chosen is Falmouth.
36:30The colour palette's all quite muted with a sort of watercolour style designer and some sort of more simple sort of sketchy line work over the top.
36:40Decorating's my happy place.
36:41So I can just kind of zone out and paint.
36:43Love it.
36:43I'm just getting some colour onto my tankard.
36:46Trying to go really colourful but, like, pastel.
36:48Hope my mum likes it.
36:50If my mum likes it, that's all right, then.
36:52Build is called On Your Bike.
36:54It'll feature my wife cycling.
36:57Sometimes she's about to cycle off a cliff.
36:59Sometimes she's cycling just in front of a train.
37:01But, you know, she gets to feature on all of them, Matt.
37:04That's what she wants.
37:06I'm going to go a bit washy for the colours.
37:09Just kind of ones that suit kind of the vibe of Sidmouth.
37:13They've got the really red cliffs there, like browny red.
37:16So I'm going to pick up on those a little bit.
37:18Yeah.
37:19However, the potters have chosen to decorate their souvenir sets.
37:23I have got some red underglaze.
37:26So I'm going to try and go quite bold and kind of make it as playful as I can.
37:31It's crucial they apply the right amount of coverage to withstand the searing temperatures of a gloss firing.
37:36With it going to a higher temperature this time around, you've got more chances of some of the colours becoming a little bit burnt out.
37:43So then maybe not as vibrant.
37:44So you can't get away with, you know, maybe the one or two washes of colour on it.
37:49You've kind of got to plan ahead.
37:51Potters, you're halfway through.
37:53I've got so much to do.
37:57I've not finished anything yet.
37:58There's just not enough time.
38:00I was very chilled before.
38:02My main mission was to get that done in half the time, because that was going to take the longest for me to do.
38:06So, yeah.
38:08We're sort of on track.
38:09So, have you had a look around?
38:11I have.
38:12It looks like a hive of activity.
38:14I think everybody's slowly realising the enormity of the challenge.
38:18It's all more detail now, isn't it?
38:19We want to see that detail put on these souvenirs.
38:22Definitely.
38:22I'm a little bit worried about Andrew.
38:24I think some of it looked a bit washy, some of the decoration on the plate.
38:27I just hope it will have that punch.
38:29It doesn't burn out.
38:30Yeah.
38:30Yeah, exactly.
38:31Well, I'm going to have to speed up, because there's no way I can spend as much time doing that same kind of technique there.
38:37I've also got to get Granny painted in there.
38:38So, yeah, we're up against it, surprisingly.
38:42So, I'm just adding some copper carb to my bell.
38:46I want that sort of green-black going on.
38:49I mean, Bill seems to have changed his style with the decoration on the bell.
38:54I wonder whether that's the best approach, because you want that coherent voice across all of the set.
38:59Yeah.
39:00Hello.
39:01You've loads done.
39:02But I haven't done my wife yet.
39:05Oh!
39:06I know, she's got to go on all of it, hasn't she?
39:08Oh, no!
39:09That's the most important thing.
39:10Sure.
39:11Do you want us to edit it out?
39:14Yeah.
39:16Potters, that's one hour left.
39:19You've one hour left.
39:20Holy monkeys.
39:24Anyone else delighted there's an hour left?
39:26We need more.
39:27Oh, okay.
39:28Oh, God.
39:30It's hard, because you want to kind of do your best, but there's too much to decorate.
39:34I'm nowhere near organized enough to do this color by color, so I'm just doing it piece by piece.
39:37So, I've just got the tankard left to do with not much time.
39:40Stylistically, it's not the same as that, but the color range is the same, but I've had to work much quicker, and I'm going to have to even work quicker on that one.
39:46I actually don't know how I'm going to work on that one, but there we go.
39:49I need to put some more detail on this.
39:51I need to work out how much an ice cream would have been in the 1950s.
39:55Toppence.
39:57Thanks.
39:57So much detail in this.
39:59You kind of, like, you want to get it all in, otherwise it can look a bit lackluster, and that's the reality of it.
40:06Andrew, so nice, you want to die there.
40:08Should it be so nice, comma, you want to die there?
40:11So nice, you want to die there.
40:12Oh, without a comma.
40:12Just all one word, thank you.
40:14It's nice having a teacher here, isn't it?
40:15I just need to write the word Falmouth on the shelf, and then get it all in some glaze.
40:21Five minutes left.
40:23Goodness me.
40:23Oh, my God, everybody's are amazing.
40:33Bottom's cleaned, everything's wiped.
40:35Do we need to glaze the clangibles or not?
40:37Ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling.
40:37No.
40:38Don't glaze the ding-a-ling.
40:40Ten seconds.
40:42Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
40:50Items down, step away, well done.
40:53That's it for now.
40:54Lemon egg.
40:57The potters must now take their seaside souvenir sets to Princess for one final firing.
41:03The next time they see them, it will be judgment time.
41:06There's always anxiety, isn't there?
41:09Whenever you leave something, it's like leaving a child somewhere.
41:12I definitely think my set sits together.
41:14It's the same colours I've used across all of them.
41:17And if that wasn't enough, I made sure there's diamonds on everything.
41:19It's all made.
41:20It's all decorated.
41:21Cannot do anything about it now.
41:23That's it.
41:24Done.
41:24Having looked at Finn and Angharad at the back there, every time I went to the sink, I was having a little look.
41:30They genuinely look like something you might buy in a shop.
41:32Mine looks a bit something like you might buy in a charity shop, maybe, but never mind.
41:38It's judgment day.
41:45Hi.
41:45And after a 24-hour glass firing, the potters are up early to collect their finished pieces from Princess.
41:52I'm happy.
41:53My plate did warp.
41:5550% amazing.
41:5750% a bit average.
42:00My plate's warped.
42:00And because it's warped, some of the small hairline cracks have now opened up.
42:05But everything else has come out really nicely.
42:07And as their plates all need ribbon and their bells need clangers...
42:11Oh, jeez, Louise.
42:13..the potters have been given time to get their souvenir sets ready for Keith and Rich.
42:18I was expecting these colours to have burnt out a lot more, so I'm really happy with it.
42:21How it's all come out, I don't think making more souvenirs is on my list of things that I will do again in a hurry.
42:30It's a bit dull.
42:32It still rings and it's all together.
42:35I'm pleasantly surprised to have the underglazes have come out.
42:38But not everyone is quite so happy.
42:40The colours are really pale.
42:42It's just so lame.
42:43Not very positive, so I've got to remain positive.
42:46I think so many people have got so much into theirs.
42:49I mean, I haven't got any sprigs on the bell.
42:50Do you remember I ran out of time because Granny came off?
42:53I'm just not happy with it.
42:54It's a hairline crack that's just spiralled.
42:56It's a hairline crack that's just spiralled, yeah.
42:57It is what it is.
43:05Welcome back, potters.
43:07I cannot wait to see your retro souvenir set, so let's start the judging.
43:12Finn, would you please bring your retro souvenir set up to the judges?
43:16I think it's fantastic, Lovie.
43:26It's fantastic.
43:27This is the kind of thing that you'd see in a souvenir shop.
43:31You've managed to create the sprig of the ship on there
43:34in such a way that it's just part of the whole vessel.
43:38The attention to detail, the illustrations are just wonderful.
43:43Great ring.
43:45Sounds amazing.
43:47Before I say anything, I am coming round for a high five.
43:52I can't even speak.
43:53You've smashed it.
43:55It's awesome.
43:55Oh, my gosh.
43:56It's absolutely awesome.
43:57I was super worried that it wasn't, like, souvenir enough.
44:01It's almost, almost, the perfect example of what we were looking for.
44:05Well done, Finn.
44:06Yeah, really well done.
44:07Brilliant.
44:07Cheers.
44:13I love the illustrations.
44:16I think they work really well.
44:18The tankard itself is nicely thrown.
44:20You've got this lovely handle here.
44:22Got a bit of a bendy plate.
44:24But really nicely carved out devil's work.
44:27Beautiful piercing.
44:28This is really wonderful.
44:29Who doesn't like a donkey?
44:31Come on.
44:32Yeah.
44:33Nice ring.
44:34That sounds amazing.
44:36Yeah.
44:37Love the clog.
44:37It's really lovely.
44:38And it's, you know, it's a really joyful kind of set.
44:41Love it.
44:42Well done.
44:43Well done.
44:49The colour scheme has worked really well for you.
44:51That sort of red and white, iconic, canopy kind of 50s look.
44:56The bell, I just think, is wonderful.
44:58Does it ring, Rich?
44:59It's just got such character and charm.
45:02Are you silly?
45:03I love to starfish.
45:04Honestly, it just makes me want to giggle.
45:06Yay!
45:06It's slightly warped.
45:08It doesn't take away from the lovely illustration that you've got on there.
45:12You've done so well to kind of draw everything together with that kind of Punch and Judy kind of beach style.
45:18I think it works really well.
45:19It's really fun.
45:20Oh, good.
45:29I like the fact that your wife is only just ahead of the train on a very tall bridge.
45:34I love what it says on the back.
45:35So nice you'll want to die there.
45:38Yeah.
45:39Well, your wife nearly is.
45:42There's someone right on the White Cliffs of Dover there.
45:44Is that your wife too?
45:45Yeah, yeah.
45:46She's on all of them.
45:47She's on all of them.
45:48I love the theme.
45:49Love it.
45:50I think it's a really, really good set.
45:53I love the illustrations.
45:55Yeah.
45:55I mean, the ambition in your scalloping and in the piercing works really, really well.
46:00It has opened up in a couple of places just where that plate started to open.
46:04It's just fractured through the kind of weakest point.
46:07But that's because you've not got much material there.
46:10But actually, the piercing that you've done is really tidy.
46:13And that edge, that rim is so, so fine.
46:16It's so thin, you know.
46:17No, it's a nice ring.
46:20It's a really nice ring.
46:21And the beach huts there, the different coloured beach huts, the bikes again.
46:25It's a really, really lovely set.
46:27Well done.
46:28It's a bit heavy, just to say, first off.
46:38The tankard is quite heavy, isn't it?
46:41The sprigs on there are quite substantial.
46:43But when you were actually decorating the sprigs, it really came to life.
46:47The star of this set for me is the ice cream barrow.
46:51Yeah.
46:52That is just so charming.
46:55It's incredible, lovely.
46:56It sort of speaks of that kind of kitsch, lovely kind of style.
47:00I mean, this just reminds me of, like, a doily or something.
47:03That's what I was thinking.
47:04A lace doily.
47:05A lace, yeah.
47:06It is just so beautifully intricate.
47:08And with that pink ribbon, it's just really, really beautiful.
47:13Nice ring.
47:15It's like a shop ring.
47:17Tiny little bits of thumbprints there from the glazing.
47:21But this is amazing.
47:22Really lovely.
47:22There's lots of nice little touches that kind of bring it all together as a set.
47:26Yeah.
47:33The sprigs on the tankard have worked really, really well.
47:36What made you choose that colour?
47:38The sandy colour, really.
47:40Sand, yeah.
47:41I didn't want to...
47:41Yeah, I probably should have sold something a little bit bolder.
47:44But, yeah, the colours are all just a bit washed out, aren't they?
47:46It just almost feels like you've kind of gone in with the first layer across everything.
47:49Yeah.
47:50And you sort of would then go in again and put a bit more definition in, perhaps a bit
47:53of line work or something like that, just to kind of give it that pop and that punch.
47:57So, yeah.
47:57A bit more practice with the underglades.
47:58Oh!
47:58Got a noise.
48:00Nice ring to it.
48:01That's a nice ring.
48:02But the bell does feel like you didn't have enough time to finish it off.
48:06Yeah.
48:06There's no sprigs.
48:07No, I know.
48:08Again, granny, you know, that's almost like an exquisite illustration.
48:12Like, the shading is lovely and the light is lovely.
48:15Just perhaps if you'd have had the sort of the time.
48:18I guess it was an added extra, wasn't it?
48:20Yeah.
48:20So, it feels like it's just lacking that clarity and that distinction between the colours, perhaps.
48:24Yeah.
48:24But the quality of the making is very good.
48:26Yeah.
48:27You know, you've turned nice foot rings in there.
48:29The piercing is very neat.
48:30Yeah.
48:31You know, no sharp edges and it's all well glazed.
48:33Yeah, that works really well.
48:35Well, it's a lovely use of colour, but just, yeah, that pop.
48:39Yeah.
48:39That pop.
48:39Never mind.
48:46It's a nice set, but it does seem like a set of two halves.
48:49The plate itself, the decoration on the plate, looks very colourful.
48:53You know, I really do like the illustration on here.
48:56And then you've got the other items that are a bit dark, you know, not very impactful in terms of the colour.
49:02And so, a slightly different in kind of aesthetic.
49:06You know, I'd agree with Keith to a degree that this perhaps is a bit more colourful than the rest of the pieces.
49:12But, you know, I think you've done really well to kind of weave a narrative through everything.
49:16I think it's like a really lovely story.
49:18I love the fact that you've got the seagull and all of the snacks.
49:21You've got your sprigs.
49:22You've got brushed decoration.
49:24Nice bell.
49:25Nice bell.
49:25You've got a bit of a crack around the outside of your plate, which I think has opened up during this stoneware firing.
49:32But it is, you know, when you feel that profile, it's very, very thin.
49:36And the wheelbarrow, the wheelbarrow is just very funky.
49:38I love the little wheelbarrow with the crab and the cap.
49:41I had so much fun making that, actually.
49:43Yeah, really lovely.
49:44Got a little trade map.
49:45Yeah, we're seeing that from you.
49:46Your character coming through and what you make.
49:49It's lovely.
49:50Well done.
49:51Thank you very much.
49:52Brilliant.
49:55It's absolutely wonderful.
50:02The illustrations, you know, interjected with the sprig work.
50:06The tankard is nicely thrown.
50:08It's a nice weight, actually.
50:10It's just absolutely wonderful.
50:12That scalloping.
50:14It's incredible, love.
50:15It's incredible.
50:17I mean, it just smacks of, like, beach, seaside holidays, the postcards.
50:23It's just fabulous.
50:24Oh, it's all right.
50:26It's all right, yeah.
50:26It's all right.
50:27Quite a high pitch, that one.
50:28Yeah, it is.
50:30The bells could talk, maybe like that.
50:32Porth, can't be a bit to put it in.
50:35Yeah, it's quite a high one.
50:37Wow.
50:37It's good, though.
50:38Yeah.
50:38You bring things up here, you plonk them down on the table, and what they should do is they
50:46should explain themselves without you having to sort of explain anything, and this does
50:50exactly that.
50:51It's fabulous.
50:52Well, you've done Porth Call proud.
50:54Wow.
50:55Diane.
50:55You have.
50:56Oh, thank you.
50:57Dear.
50:57I'm feeling a lot calmer, level, just, I'm really happy with the finish of those pieces.
51:04I mean, I was happy with him, but I wasn't expecting half those comments, or a high-five,
51:10since when was that a thing?
51:11Given the crits that everybody got, and the beautiful, beautiful pieces that everybody's
51:15made, mine are a little bit washed out, lacking in detail, not many sprigs, so, yeah, maybe
51:21it's the end of the road.
51:22Could be going home this week, because there's just too many things that have gone wrong.
51:25If I get through to the next one, I will probably eat my hat, or some more biscuits,
51:29I think.
51:32This is where it starts getting really difficult, right?
51:36How do you think our potters got on?
51:38Who really took your fancies?
51:40Finn.
51:40You just look at Finn's set, and you think, he had the same time as everybody else.
51:45He manages to bend his style, while still making it his own, while meeting all of the
51:51points of the brief.
51:52You could see it in a souvenir shop.
51:54What about Anne Harrod?
51:55Another fantastic set.
51:57The scalloping on that plate was amazing.
51:59And not only that, it's the finish.
52:01She did, however, come second from last in the second challenge.
52:05You know, the second challenge, we've...
52:07I know, I keep bringing it up.
52:08No, we don't.
52:08But you keep doing it.
52:09But no, absolutely, it's, you know, and we have to talk about it.
52:13And we have to see, in relation to the main mate, where that second challenge is with
52:17all our potters.
52:18Who is in danger of not being there next week?
52:22Well, Andrew.
52:23Mm-hmm.
52:24And possibly Bill.
52:26Massive, massive faux pas.
52:27You know, that plate with that crack.
52:29Do you know what?
52:30I feel really sorry for Andrew.
52:32He's an example of someone who's slightly lost their way in the decoration.
52:37He didn't get that sprig of his grandmother dipping her toe in the water on.
52:40And the colours just didn't quite pack that punch.
52:43It's like you got the first coat.
52:44Yeah.
52:44Yeah.
52:45And that bell was so obviously, oh, I've run out of time.
52:49I'll slap a bit of underglaze on it and just see what happens.
52:52It sounds like you still have some decisions to make.
52:55So I'll leave you to it.
52:56I'm off to have an ice cream and a donkey ride.
53:04Well done, potters.
53:06Another fantastic week.
53:08All right then, let's get on with it.
53:10This week's Potter of the Week is...
53:19Well, of course it's been.
53:21Come on now.
53:26I've got high fives.
53:29Well done.
53:32Yeah, fabulous.
53:33And now, the potter who will be leaving us this week is...
53:39Andrew.
53:44I knew.
53:46Never mind.
53:47Thanks, guys.
53:48It was coming.
53:49We saw that one.
53:52Thanks, guys.
53:53What a shame, but we knew it was coming.
53:55Did feel it.
53:56And once I'd seen it come out of the kiln, then I was pretty certain.
53:59We'll meet again.
54:02It is a really, really sad thing, but...
54:04It actually feels like a beginning.
54:06It's just extraordinary.
54:07It really is the most amazing thing.
54:09It's been a hard week.
54:10It's sad to see Andrew go.
54:11I wish he could stay here for a bit longer.
54:13Yeah, we're going to go back to Swatage and...
54:16Trash those plates, I think.
54:18I've had so much fun.
54:20I've not laughed this much forever.
54:22You're so inspiring.
54:23You're so creative.
54:23You're so weird.
54:24The people are the highlight.
54:28100%.
54:28You can't put a price tag on that.
54:30It's just, yeah, they're definitely the best thing from all of it.
54:33And as Andrew bids farewell to the pottery,
54:36Finn's souvenir set takes its place in the Throwdown Gallery.
54:40That's an experience.
54:44One more.
54:45One more.
54:45One more.
54:45One more.
54:46One more.
54:46One more.
54:46One more.
54:47There's a lot of hard work gone into that, and it's really lovely to get rewarded for the
54:51work that's gone into it.
54:52All I'm going to say is, I had a great souvenir set, so even if I'm not getting Potter of the
54:56Week, again, I've already had one, so I don't need to have another one.
54:59I'm going to own that place in Week 6 and, yeah, crack on.
55:04Next time.
55:06Take two.
55:07The Potters take on a large-scale throwing challenge.
55:10This is the biggest thing I've ever thrown.
55:12Feel the fear.
55:13When they tackle a terracotta tagine.
55:15I don't want to annoy you.
55:16I feel like it's a bit of a teenager.
55:18You're getting pottery weird again.
55:19And a super-sized throwdown.
55:21I can get my leg in there.
55:23Who will feel the heat?
55:24It's just full-on collapsing.
55:26And who will be left out in the cold?
55:56What?
55:57What?
55:58What?
