In this week's ESSENCE Now, our Slayed or Shade panelists take on Tina Fey's "Sheetcake" bit on SNL's "Weekend Update" and Yara Shahidi talks Harvard and her new "Black-ish" spinoff.
Transcript
00:00I'm Makhon Yovu, and today on Essence Now, our girl Yara Shahidi is here and ready to
00:10dish on her plans for Harvard. And was Tina Fey's shitcake bit funny or no? Our panelists
00:16are ready to go in for the return of Slade or Shade. But right now, it's time for the
00:21hot list, the biggest stories you're buzzing about today. Anyone remember this Trump tweet
00:31from 2014? President Obama is about to embark on a 17-day vacation in his native Hawaii, putting
00:37Secret Service away from families on Christmas. Aloha. Well, pot, meat, kettle. According to
00:43several reports, because of the Trump family's constant traveling, the Secret Service has
00:48already hit its salary and overtime cap that was meant to last the entire year. It's
00:54only August, right? Under Trump, 42 people have protection, 18 of which are members of his
01:00own family. So Trump, here's a tip. Tell Johnny Jr., Ivanka, Pookie, and Nene and them to save
01:07us some money and stay their asses at home. Do it for America, okay?
01:11Here we go again. Another woman in R. Kelly's circle has come forward, accusing the star of
01:22abusing young women. In fact, she said she had a sexual relationship with Kelly when she
01:26was just 16 years old. According to BuzzFeed News, Jeronda Pace was such a huge R. Kelly
01:32fan at the time that she cut high school every day to attend his child pornography trial in
01:37Chicago. She said she's speaking out now and breaking a non-disclosure agreement in the
01:41process because she's worried for the other women in his circle. She told BuzzFeed, I didn't
01:47have anybody to speak up on my behalf when I was going through what I was going through
01:51with him. He's brainwashed the women really bad, and it kind of reminds me of Charles Manson.
01:56Are you tired of all the news about white supremacy? Well, Tina Fey has an interesting solution.
02:09Watch.
02:10And the next time when you see a bunch of white boys, boys in polo shirts, scream about taking
02:14our country back, and you want to scream, it's not our country. We stole it. And what
02:20do you want to yell that? Don't yell it at the Klan column. Yell it into the cake.
02:25Hmm. But everyone was not laughing. Elon James tweeted, so y'all going it was a joke to me
02:30to death when the ignoring of racism and oppression leads to my community's continued suffering?
02:36Cool. But Amanda D'Queela disagrees. Just a friendly reminder that you can find Tina Fey
02:42funny, find the laughter cathartic, and still go out and protest. So what do you think? Was
02:47the bit funny? Or no? Send us your comments using hashtag Essence Now, because we're talking
02:52about it in Slade or Shade next. It's Tuesday, August 22nd, and it's time for Essence Now.
03:08Welcome to Essence Now. I'm your host, Makon Dovu. And remember, you can talk to us at any
03:13time using the hashtag Essence Now or by email at Essence Now at Essence.com. All right, you know
03:19what time it is. It's time to Slay or Shade, where we Slay or Shade the week's hottest topics.
03:25Joining me in the studio are Senior Lifestyle and Relationship Editor for Essence.com, Charlie Penn,
03:31Filmmaker of the upcoming documentary, Duty Free, Sean Pierre Regis, and Essence.com Editor,
03:37Entertainment Editor, Danielle Quateng-Clark. Welcome, everyone.
03:40Thank you. All right, let's jump right in. As I mentioned in the hot list, a recent SNL bit,
03:46comedian Tina Fey suggested that we can all fight white supremacy with what she called
03:50sheet caking. Basically, instead of attending any protests or rallies, folks should order a cake with
03:56an American flag on it from a Jewish or a Black-owned bakery, of course, and eat it. Although
04:02Fey did call out white supremacists, Trump and the Nazis, some felt sheet caking wrongly encouraged
04:08people to ignore the very serious problem of racism. But other fans think we should take it
04:13for what it was, a joke. So, panelists, was Tina Fey's sheet cake a bit, a slay, or Shade? And one,
04:19two, three, throw your cards up. Let's see. Shade, Shade. Oh, oh, okay. Danielle, we'll start with you.
04:24Tell me what you think. Um, I love Tina Fey. I think she's so funny. Um, I think this one was in
04:30bad taste. It was, I think, the week after, if not days after Charlottesville. Um, and I think
04:35it's the biggest lesson we've learned from this incident is that white people need to speak up
04:39to other white people about hatred, about racism, about privilege. Um, so, I think eating a cake
04:45instead of addressing the community that needs to be addressed is not really what needs to be done. I get,
04:50I get a joke is a joke, but it just, maybe there was another joke she could have taken. Literally,
04:53it was important. It was literally important. Sean, time in. This one is so hard for me. Okay. I said,
04:58I said Slade because I, for me, what I took away was the fact that if you do not give these racist,
05:06ignorant people a, an audience, then, you know, who's listening, right? And I thought that was
05:12really, really important because they should not have a voice, um, or at least one that's listened to.
05:16But at the same time, I, I get what we're saying that like, when you look at Boston this weekend,
05:21when 20,000 people stood up against the hundred and you see a visual like that, you're like, hell
05:25yeah, I want to go out there and protest. And this is so important. Um, but I think Tina Fey didn't want
05:30people to go out and get hurt as which, what happened in, in Charlottesville. And there was a
05:35very real threat of that. Um, but also it brings up the idea of like, must we always police, uh, other
05:41people's, uh, protests? Right. Is that the role of comedian? Exactly. And, and, and, you know,
05:46is there one right way to protest? Um, interesting. Good question. Charlie? So I said
05:51shade because like Danielle, I, I do, I am a Tina Fey fan. I do love her comedy. And I think
05:56because there's been so many moments where she nailed race relations in comedy, she thinks she
06:01can just, you know, always go there. And this time it was in four days, literally. So I just think,
06:06I mean, I'm not really mad at Tina Fey in general. I'm, I'm honestly not. There's been so many times
06:10she's nailed it. But in this case, girl, no fail. Our faves can be problematic. Exactly. So Kayla,
06:16let's check in with you. You're a man in social media. What is the Twitter verse saying? I mean,
06:21it's truly divided. Okay. So Lamonte Brown says it's a joke. Ease up. So he's slaying it. Uh,
06:26Nathaniel Friedman at Free Darko says Tina Fey made a joke about the silly ways people cope and it's
06:31being taken as literal advice. Megan Ellison says the fact that people are hating on Tina Fey for
06:35incredible sheet kicking skit is ridiculous. I choose empathy and laughter over hate, but some
06:40people are shading it. Van Newkirk says I have successfully ignored and avoided all Tina Fey news
06:45for years now. And today will not be a day that I stop. Oh, Cynthia Daniel says not funny at all,
06:50but I do still believe you need to be active in the fight for our rights. Okay. Very interesting
06:54comments. Keep them coming. All right. Moving along. After a fan accused Kevin Hart's wife,
06:59Aniko Parrish of being his former mistress, Aniko managed to shade the fan, the rumors and Kevin's ex,
07:04Tori. Aniko said that Kevin and Tori's marriage was already broken and that Tori spread the
07:09mistress rumors because she wanted to play the victim. Ouch. Now Aniko has since turned off all
07:14comments on her Instagram page, but it seems Tori is getting the last word on this one. She told TMZ
07:20numbers don't lie. Dates don't lie. At the end of the day, she forced my hand to address this publicly.
07:25The most important thing to me is my children. So if my children see something that she's writing
07:29that makes me look like a liar, no. Panelists, what in the heart is going on here? Slay the
07:35shade in one, two, three. I see y'all already. Go. All right. We'll start with Sean. You're right
07:40in the middle. Go ahead. Why be so messy about it? Like these women, yes. I mean, but like,
07:48it's like these women are like, they're powerful in their own right. Right. Tori has her own brand.
07:53Like you have money, like you have class, like don't take to Instagram to let out all of these
07:59like silly, like keep it internal. Like you would never see Jay, Beyonce and Becky with the good
08:08hair out there telling who each other was and how they were all involved. Too classy for that.
08:13You will see Solange in the elevator putting in some games. Danielle, chime in. What are you thinking?
08:18So I'm saying Slade for Tori. I saw the video, the TMZ video when they asked her. Of course
08:23they're going to ask her. And I thought the way she handled it was really classy. I mean,
08:26she was just basically said the same thing that we just read. She was saying, you know,
08:29this is something that I thought we had moved past. Apparently there's some issues there.
08:33Point blank. Don't lie on me for my kids to see this. I thought she handled it well. Iniko,
08:39maybe it's the pregnancy hormones. I don't know what's going, but it seemed very out of character.
08:43No, for her, because usually Iniko's pretty like quiet and like kumbaya. So it seemed
08:47really off for her to, to clap back like that. I don't know. All right, Charlie,
08:52what was Kevin's rib thinking? Okay. So to be honest, I'm actually really was kind of doing
08:56this. I'm slating Tori for being as mature as a woman could be having to publicly respond to
09:04something like this again for the thousandth time. I'm actually shading Kevin Iniko, whom I usually
09:09love for taking the high road. And I'm mostly shading Kevin because the only person I want to hear
09:14really set the record about this publicly is Kevin. And I did not read the book yet. So if he did that
09:20there, fine. Yes. Okay. Twitter. But if he didn't, he's the one who should go public and clear up these
09:27dates. He's always like, I'm just laughing. It doesn't bother me. Right. But what happened?
09:32Because obviously the two women in your life still don't agree on it. I thought we had moved on.
09:36Yeah. Yeah. Shade all around. Okay. Shade all around. Okay. At Boss Lady Radio, Kevin Hart's wife
09:46Iniko played herself. She says his ex-wife handled that with so much class. I bet she will think twice
09:50before mentioning Tori. At Honeybee 83, that was very shady of Iniko and Tori. It's better than me
09:55because she would have had to see me over that disrespect. At True to Truth, Iniko must want
10:01Tori to pay her a visit. A lot of threats going on here. If you love that man's kids as your own,
10:05and you're expecting your own, you wouldn't reply with all that.
10:08That's so true. What about the kids and the new baby coming in? All right. Now, lastly,
10:12in an interview with Rap Radar podcast, Jay-Z questioned why black people don't support black
10:17entrepreneurs. And he used basketball dad, LaVar Ball, as his example.
10:22That man has a vision of his own. Why wouldn't I support him? Right. Why wouldn't I support him?
10:28He feels like he can move culture and his son got a big enough name and a big enough brand
10:32that they can do it. Nike had to start somewhere. Why do we get so upset when we,
10:38us, as a culture, want to start our own?
10:41Hmm. Now, some folks believe Jay missed the mark here, pointing to everything from LaVar Ball's
10:46controversial statements about women to his overall brash personality as reasons he shouldn't get a
10:52blanket cosign from us. Now, panelists, weigh in. Does Jay have a point that we should always support
10:56black wealth or is it inexcusable to dismiss LaVar Ball's past behavior? Is it a slayed or shade?
11:04Go ahead, panelists. One, two, three, go. Oh, OK. We'll start with you. Oh, wait. I haven't started
11:09with Charlie. Charlie, you go. I knew you were ready. OK. I'm shading Hove because it's easy for
11:14someone with as much wealth as he has to tell us what to do with the wealth we don't have. OK.
11:18Look, I'm all for supporting black owned businesses, but my morals mean everything to me.
11:23And I stand up for women. I'm black and I'm a woman. So if I don't agree with someone's views,
11:27I don't have to support their business just because they're black. I can find another black
11:31owned business to support. And I just, you know, it's always interesting to hear people
11:35with so much money. So you don't listen to R. Kelly. You don't. You. That's where you draw the line.
11:39I don't like your message. I haven't supported R. Kelly in a long time. In a minute. OK.
11:42OK. All right. I didn't forget. All right. All right. Sean, jump in. Yes.
11:47I didn't forget. I agree with Charlie in a lot of ways. Right. I mean, I think Hove was wrong in saying
11:52that there should be a blanket contract for. I still don't have title. It's not that good.
11:57So I. Boop. Shea. Yes, I did. You're holding up the right card. Yes, I did.
12:01But so like I don't just because Jay did it doesn't mean that we should, you know, get into it.
12:06And also, if you looked at the sneakers that this man is trying to sell for four hundred and fifty
12:11dollars, they are ugly. So I'm not going to support you for some four hundred and fifty dollars
12:15that I could get for twelve dollars from Shaq at Walmart.
12:19Danielle, have the last word in here on the so-called sneakers.
12:22I actually agree with Sean and Charlie. I think that we should have enough deciphering
12:26to like we do have enough. We're going to buy what we're going to buy.
12:28But I'm saying Slade just for the continual promotion of buying black in general, just
12:34to remind people if you can if you have that option to buy black, do it.
12:38But I'm not saying anything because I think LaBarba is crazy.
12:41I mean, he thinks he's better than Jordan and like he tried it.
12:45He said it several times that he could have beat Jordan in his prime.
12:48And I'm like, OK, but I mean, I do.
12:51You know, I do support the and I have I have Spotify, so I don't have a title either.
12:55But another one, you know, I'm yeah, Spotify is great.
13:00Yeah. Well, but support black if you can.
13:03If you can. All right. Kayla, what are people on Twitter saying about Jay's comments on LaBarba?
13:08Ball. OK, I was trying hard to find something supportive, so I found one at Skeptical Lex.
13:13She says LaBar truly is creating a legacy.
13:15Jay-Z has to support hashtag support black business.
13:18All right. That was the one support I found.
13:20Everything else is shade.
13:21So at Al Sal 1302.
13:23So Jay-Z buying from and publicly stating support for LaBarba isn't showing support for his misogyny.
13:29So hashtag double standards, they say.
13:32Scott McCary says what's interesting is Jay-Z somehow concludes that we all dislike LaBarba because he had a vision of his own.
13:37And that's nuts.
13:39So they said that he missed the mark.
13:40Very, very interesting.
13:42Thank you so much, panelists, for joining us.
13:44Coming up, Yara Shahidi is here and we're going to get the scoop on how she's balancing her new blackish spinoff with her real life as a freshman at Harvard.
13:52But first, are you looking for some inspiration for your end of summer wardrobe?
13:56Essence editor Joye Thorpe has some tips on how to rock matching sets and style goals.
14:01Watch.
14:01Hi, it's Joye, your fashion editor at Essence magazine.
14:08And today we're talking about matching sets.
14:11I love them because they take your look from day to night with literally no effort.
14:18First up, this pajama-inspired set is comfy and chic at the same time.
14:23It's long-sleeved but lightweight and super cool for summer.
14:26I love this monochromatic set because it's super cute and also dramatic.
14:36And it's summer.
14:37You have to show a little leg.
14:42Too much ruffle ain't never hurt nobody.
14:44I like this.
14:45It's flouncy.
14:46It's fun.
14:47It's summery.
14:48Pair it with a strappy heel and you're good.
14:51Pair it with a strappy heel and you're good.
14:54Opt for matching sets this season.
14:55They're easy.
14:56They're cute.
14:58I'm obsessed.
15:10So my life, I'm an open book.
15:14I'm doing a show called Marlon.
15:15for once in my life I can express who I am as flawed as I may be I know that I have a great
15:23heart and I mean well but nobody's perfect yeah you're watching essence now I'm your host Makon
15:35and joining us right now in the studio is a young woman who is everyone's black girl magic girl
15:40crush seriously she's like essence family at this point please welcome Yara Shahidi to the show
15:45hey how are you good you look fantabulous as per usual one of the reasons we love you so much is
15:52that you're an activist you're regularly standing up for what you believe in what is right and your
15:56latest project the hashtag like a girl campaign with the brand always speak to us about that and
16:01tell us why you wanted to get involved I mean I've always been a fan of the campaigns that always
16:05have been running for the like a girl campaign and it really does speak to this idea that so many times
16:11around puberty girls lose their confidence and it affects us going forward and it's really important
16:17to have certain messaging that allows us to really embrace failure and get rid of the stigma around it
16:23especially because this is a crucial time in our lives in which we're making big decisions about who
16:28we want to be and we want to allow ourselves to really fully experience the world as we want to
16:33and a lot of that is being able to get rid of any barriers that we deal with about tackling our goals
16:40and so important so how do people get involved with the hashtag how should they use the hashtag
16:43I mean the hashtag is perfect for social media purposes of course and so you can always spread
16:48love whether you are some daily inspo of something like telling a story of what you've tackled or
16:53conquered or a fear that you you um got rid of using the like a girl campaign and even if you just want
17:00to reach out and look at the hashtag for support or daily inspiration it's a great way to just get in
17:05touch with your uh fellow peers okay well I'm definitely gonna use it now we know your family
17:10is really instrumental in keeping you grounded but how do you avoid peer pressure when your family's
17:15not around I mean I think they've really instilled in me this idea of um not even knowing who I am but
17:22also under understanding what my values are and so while Yara may change my values remain the same and
17:28so what is really important is that one I surround myself with people that even if we're not the same
17:33person because the goal is not to have a ton of clones of myself as friends but to really um have
17:38people that respect your values and so if anything um you grow together rather than dealing with having
17:44to deal with peer pressure and I know it's something that so many girls deal with and so many people
17:49deal with and so it's important to build a support network and so it may be of friends it may be of
17:55teachers of family members of people that you meet through instagram or whatever it may be but
18:01a support network has been really instrumental and really solidifying where I stand and how I want
18:06to operate in the world right that support network is extremely important so how do you stay
18:12grounded though I mean with your family and your mom and your support system how do you stay grounded
18:17I mean it's it's pretty easy I think what's nice is that I mean yes of course I work but I think what's
18:25funny is that acting is something I do it's not something I am even if my title is actor or actress
18:30and it's allowed me to live my life and so yes I work 60 hours a week and yes I have a crazy schedule
18:37but I still get those moments of hanging out with friends doing other things and really having that
18:42balance and so what's funny is that when you really get down to the core of my life or just what I go
18:47through on a day-to-day experience it's really no different than a person with a full school schedule
18:51person balancing the sports a person like any other kid right with a full schedule we're all dealing
18:57with especially now such full schedules and balancing everything that we want to do and so
19:03what's funny is like there are really not that many differences between you and a normal kid but I'm so
19:07glad you brought up school you're going to college school you're going to college you're going to
19:11college soon and your character Zoe is also going to college and grown-ish are there going to be
19:16parallels between blackish and grown-ish and what can you how would you describe the show I mean I think
19:21how I describe the show is of course we're in the pre-production phases so there are no scripts that I can give
19:26you an inside scoop on but our main goal is I'm sorry I don't have the scoop yet but I mean the main goal of
19:33the show and what we've really discussed with the writers and Kenya Barris is to portray college in
19:38its most authentic form of course black like in blackish some things are exaggerated for the sake of
19:45comedy but it's really based in the sense of reality and I think that's what we really want for
19:50grown-ish this ability to tell a story now of course there will be a lot happening to the main
19:54character yes may not happen to every student but we want to address the issues that college that
20:00students deal with whether it is of course like you're saying peer pressure or figuring out who
20:04you are and figuring out I mean Zoe is a big fish in a small pond and so there is this what you notice
20:11even in that first episode when she goes to visit her college is that she's unsure of herself and it's
20:16one of the first times you see her unsure of herself and it's important to not gloss over that as like
20:22oh yeah well she'll be confident again all the time right telling the story of what it means to
20:26be a young girl what it means to be a part of Gen Z and what it means to be on a college campus right
20:31now do you feel any pressure because blackish does such a great job of tackling issues much like it
20:36sounds like grown-ish will do and such a great funny responsible way do you feel any pressure to live
20:41up to the success of blackish I mean what's lovely is that we still have the same amazing team behind it
20:47of course it's different writers room but I really don't feel the pressure because what I love is
20:52that of course grown-ish is an extension of blackish but at the same time it's going to have a different
20:57feel and I love this idea that it's in all of the writers mind that they want to make it relevant
21:02because that's what has made blackish so crucial to just the TV landscape this idea of it's a telling
21:08of our reality and that it's based in what's happening now and so I think that's something that we
21:13all are very aware of walking into this speaking of what's happening now what are your thoughts
21:18about like the current events and what is going on particularly in light of what happened in
21:22Charlottesville I mean you've been so vocal about the Muslim ban yeah yeah I mean of course I've been
21:26vocal about this administration in general and I think it is definitely deeply personal especially
21:32being half black half Iranian and having many peers who are directly affected I know there are
21:36plenty of people that are directly affected in ways that I'm not even experiencing and so it's
21:40important to spread love and I think that's why it was even crucial for me to be a part of this like
21:44a girl campaign because in this moment we're depending on this generation uh to be the change
21:50makers and a part of that is making sure that they have the access and the personal confidence and
21:56tools to go tackle those goals and to really be that kind of uh change agent that we need right
22:02right right but on a lighter note away from the events from the past week so you're going to
22:07Harvard soon yeah how excited are you I am so excited yeah do you uh how do how do you feel
22:14about going and are you nervous do you have any do you feel any pressure I mean of course I'm nervous
22:19because it is a new adventure and much like Zoe it's a world that I've not been a part of and so
22:23I'm entering a whole new landscape and it is this crazy new adventure of mine but at the same time
22:30college has been something I've had my eyes on for the entirety of my life and so to be able to go
22:36in study what I want and have to support the support of professors already and of family and
22:42of my blackish family she was so amazing do you know what you want to study I'm double majoring
22:46in social studies which is interdisciplinary sociology anthropology economics and philosophy
22:53mind-blowing my second major is african-american studies that is amazing yara how are you gonna have
22:58time for all of that you know I love how you spoke about earlier about vulnerability and exposing that
23:04and showing that is there a biggest failure that you've had and how did you how did you recover from
23:08that I mean there are multiple points in my life and I'm constantly going through moments and of
23:13I call it personal evolution is how I like to brand it in my head because I think what I've realized
23:19overarchingly is that I have such a fantastic support network of people around me that even if I fall
23:25I'm not falling far I love that yeah and that's the same and the same goes for so many girls and I
23:31think it's about one finding that support system and getting rid of the personal fear of failure I
23:37know for me there are moments in my life of whether how seriously I take my academics I know a lot of
23:41times whenever I've done poorly on anything I've taken it so personally as like a deep reflection of
23:46who I am and my potential and I've really let it define me and there are other moments even as
23:52somebody who's a rock climber I've gone up across challenges where I've been the only girl in this
23:58gym and I'm like I'm not going to there's no way I'm reaching the top of that wall and so much of
24:05it is about just kind of that that personal fear of failing or that personal fear of not making it
24:11versus one getting rid of this idea of perfection and two really accepting and celebrating every step up
24:18that you do make I love that I don't think we can end the show on a more perfect note Yara you're
