00:00One or two things that I could say about Baldwin. First of all, he was a black man,
00:11gay, an intellectual, a very important writer who was not only an intellectual but also was on the
00:22streets, was a practitioner, was somebody who believed in being present. It was about creating
00:31a character. The character is Baldwin and Baldwin is speaking to us. Of course there cannot be more
00:38films like this because we don't own the structure, we don't have the power of green lights. Other
00:46people does and other people who have a different history, who have a different interpretation of
00:52history, who are in a power position. When Baldwin says white is a metaphor for power, that's
01:01exactly what it means. Well, I do hope that the film gives this present generation some
01:11hints about what is necessary in the struggle. At what point you need the anger, but at what
01:20point you need the organization, at what point you need to work. I've heard more and more,
01:26Baldwin says, my God, we need a Malcolm today. We need those voices. We need people like them.
01:33We need leadership that can play this role. Baldwin says, you need to know your history. History,
01:41by the way, is not the past. History is the present. And you are your history. You're learning
01:49about whatever happened, but you are creating it at the same time.
01:54So, you are learning about whatever happened, but you are creating it at the same time.
