00:00Hi, my name is Ursula Steven. I'm a celebrity hairstylist.
00:04It took a while to accept that title.
00:06Because I really do see myself as just a hairstylist that wants to work with everybody.
00:10So, I do work with celebrities and I do work with, you know, women as well.
00:14But whoever sits in the chair, I'm grateful to be able to have that connection with them.
00:21When my mom asked me what I wanted to do and I was very confused.
00:27So, I didn't really know what I wanted to do and I just said I wanted to do here.
00:31And I graduated high school, had my license and my diploma and I went to college,
00:38which was a decision to set up. He's my mom.
00:41And I was actually on tour. It was my second semester, mid-semester.
00:49And I was actually on tour and that's when I was like, come on, I don't want to come home.
00:54And I was like, what? And I was like, yeah, I got to go. I can't miss this. I was going to be in.
00:58That was emotional.
01:00The moment that I decided to open up a salon was right after I had this big birthday party.
01:06I had a lot of friends and people asked me questions.
01:08Like, do you have a salon? Is this salon space?
01:10And then I felt like I sounded pretty silly, you know, being at the level that I was and not having a salon.
01:16And when I looked at other societies that I've looked up to, you know, they really had those foundations.
01:22And I was like, you know, I think that's my next goal.
01:24So that's when I decided to open a salon.
01:26And it was kind of the best thing I made, you know.
01:28I didn't know anything about opening a salon, even though I worked with a salon for years.
01:32I never, the first things I was just like asking for everybody all the questions that I could have had, I could think of, you know.
01:40One of the biggest challenges that I've faced kind of made a good decision to open a salon.
01:46Because at the time, I was actually asked to go on tour.
01:51So, like, maybe, like, it never went on tour.
01:54My client had a job.
01:55And it was a really good client of mine.
01:57And it was like one of those things where I just got the opportunity to open this salon.
02:02And it was like, do I do this?
02:04Then I've been working for seven years of life and jump and make this move.
02:07And then I turned this job down.
02:09This opportunity that I won't be working with this client as much.
02:11And I think when I made that decision, that allowed me to shine.
02:15I was able to move forward in my journey.
02:19And I wanted more.
02:20So I think that was a big move to turn that down.
02:25And I was able to see a bigger picture.
02:27And not kind of stay in that one bubble of work with this one person.
02:31And just get that one athlete.
02:32You know, I said, you know what, I have to just jump out the window.
02:36And I think that's the same, you know.
02:38When you are the most afraid, it's the best time to jump.
02:41And I think that's where it is.
02:45My advice to an aspiring stylist is, say yes to everything.
02:50Say yes to everything.
02:52If you are interested in being a hairstylist, you want to get a job.
02:56Don't get a job at another establishment or a fast food joint.
03:00If you want to push a group at a fast food joint, you might want to push a group at a salon.
03:04You know?
03:05Surround yourself with all doing good and get involved.
03:07And don't mimic yourself.
03:08There's so many different outlets in the beauty world.
03:10It's not only about being a hairstylist college.
03:12It's just embracing the whole beauty world.
03:14So just be willing and be open.
03:16And don't worry about what the rate is.
03:19Everybody wants to know, what's the rate?
03:21Like, when you get to the level of getting a rate, you'll know what the rate is.
03:25Just be ready to work.
