"We Really spend so much energy on our hair and not having any was GRREAT!"
Transcript
00:00This hot comb. I've been burnt with a hot blow dryer on the ear. I've had
00:06forehead burns. I've been burned several times. I mean, haven't we all?
00:17When is the most free that I've ever felt with my hair? I have to say after I did the big chop for the movie.
00:24Especially when I was bald. It took me a couple of weeks to kind of venture out and do my errands bald.
00:37Because, yeah, it is shocking at first.
00:43And I had gotten a lot of positive feedback on social media, but the actual reality of going out and getting your nails done
00:51or going out and doing the errands in the real world, it took some courage.
00:57Once I accepted that, it was so liberating.
01:01We really spent so much energy on our hair, and not having any was great.
01:06I felt like I had a gust of wind lifting me up through my life.
01:11Violet's journey is all about how she should look and how she should be and what she should want.
01:17And kind of thrust me into a journey of self-discovery and self-reflection about what Sanaa is really wanting for this stage in my life.
01:29Hair is such an expression of how you see yourself.
01:34I've been wearing my hair natural for the last year, and it's very empowering.
01:37Some days it terrifies me, and I hate it.
01:41Because, yes, I have been conditioned like the rest of us.
01:44But then other days I feel so empowered by the fact that I can wear my crown and wear my true texture in all its glory.
01:54And I love this moment for us.
01:57Just the fact that there's this whole world that supports us and our naturalness is really exciting to me.
02:06It's a great moment.
02:07My name is Sanaa Lathan, and this is my main moment.
