00:00You're watching Essence Now.
00:06I'm your host, Makhon Jovoo, and we are in the midst of a very special Halloween edition of Slade or Shade.
00:12This is where we take on the week's buzziest topics with our all-star panel.
00:16And today, I'm joined by a comedian and actress, Michelle Bateau, who is dressed as Marshmallow Woman.
00:22They love Marshmallow Woman, independent Marshmallow.
00:24I love her, Essence.com's assistant editor, Sydney Scott, appearing as Bob Ross.
00:29And last but not least, we have black girl magic ballerina Scotty Beam, who holds the Moonlight as a digital producer and personality for New York's Hot 97.
00:38Thank you for joining us.
00:39Ladies, all right, let's jump right back into it.
00:41Now, in a recent interview with Essence.com, Real Housewives of Atlanta star Portia Williams revealed that underneath all the wigs and weaves, she's natural.
00:50But here's the catch.
00:51She still relaxes her edges.
00:53Hmm.
00:54Here's what she said.
00:55I will say that when I'm doing a lot of bookings, I'll take a little toothbrush on the edges and the perm that I like to use is just for me.
01:03It's gentle and it's quick.
01:04So, does Portia get a slay for having her hair that's slayed or is trying to call yourself natural when you're still using that creamy crack?
01:11Always a shade.
01:13All right, panelist, three, two, one.
01:14Hold up your panels, please.
01:16Oh, that was a slow shade.
01:18Okay.
01:18Scotty, we're waiting any day now.
01:20Okay, we'll start with you since you're not sure.
01:22What aren't you sure about?
01:23I don't know.
01:24I don't understand what's the big deal.
01:27Yeah.
01:27She puts her, you know, creamy crack on her baby hair.
01:31It's cool.
01:32I don't know what the big issue is.
01:34But natural Twitter, like in my head, natural Twitter, natural Instagram is really, really clicky to me.
01:41Yeah.
01:41And they're so mean.
01:43They're not mean, but Michelle, is it still, can you call yourself a naturalista if you're putting the creamy crack on your edges?
01:49I mean, clearly not, but this is the most interesting thing about her, so that's cool.
01:54I mean, I don't understand how you put your butt on national television every week, fighting boobies, titties everywhere, but, you know, you can't have, like, some cute, like, little kinky curls.
02:05And call your, yeah.
02:06That's so true.
02:07I don't understand.
02:08Yeah.
02:08Sydney?
02:09I'm going to say slay because it's her hair, her choice, but I am worried that, like, would her hair not break off at the point where she, like, relaxed it?
02:18Also, no matter how gentle the relaxer is, you're still messing up your hair.
02:23True.
02:23That's the tip.
02:25Very interesting.
