00:00Hello everyone, I'm Tia Williams, beauty editor here at Essence.com and welcome to a very special
00:09edition of Shaky Beauty. I am sitting here with the fabulous and amazing Derek J. Hi Derek.
00:14Hey, how are you? Derek J. You might remember him from Housewives of Atlanta and more recently
00:20Hair Battle Spectacular. So we have him here today just to kind of talk a little bit about
00:24fall trends and what he's seeing. So first of all, let's discuss Hair Battle Spectacular.
00:30What's been your experience on the show? Well first, this is our second season. We have
00:34a new host with Eva Pickett. Well, Eva Marcel now. I'm sorry. It's Eva Marcel and we have
00:39a new guest guest, Taylor Jacobson. It's been great. It's been a very, very fun show this
00:45season. The first season, we were all trying to learn what we were doing. We didn't know
00:50what was going on. And I was the only one that came back the second season. So I was like,
00:55let's do it. And I was ready for it. So this season has been great. It's been fun.
00:59It's been good. Okay. Is there any backstage drama?
01:02It's always been. When you put 11 hairstyles together in one workspace or in one house, there's
01:08going to always be drama. And I think this week, it's drama.
01:13Really? Oh my, we can't wait to see that.
01:17Yes, yes. So on your off-duty time, what celebrities have you been working with?
01:21You know, I haven't had time to work with anybody. Because I haven't had off time.
01:25Right. In between, I got back from hair battle and came back straight back to Tapin' Housewives.
01:29And we just wrapped Tapin' Housewives Sunday. So what do you see for fall hair trends?
01:35Um, texture, texture, texture. Like texture is coming back. I'm not, and I'm appreciating it.
01:41Um, we're going away from that straight, flowy, um, yeah, what's going on right now?
01:46That's okay! That's okay!
01:48And we're going into curls and waves and, you know, women are embracing more of the natural
01:54texture of the hair. And I'm loving it, because I'm, especially for black women, they don't
01:58even know what their real hair actually look like.
01:59I have no idea what mine looks like. None.
02:01That's crazy. So when I get, when I start to transition women out of their relaxers or things,
02:06they're like, I have curly hair? I'm like, yeah. Yeah. You do. But you didn't know because
02:11you're just so busy going straight. Right. So texture is really in right now. Okay.
02:15So then now that we're doing texture, now you can add color because when you're getting your
02:19hair relaxed, you couldn't get it relaxed and you couldn't get color at the same time. Exactly.
02:23But now that you have, uh, we're wearing your natural hair, um, natural hair now, you can do more
02:27color now. Right. So that was what pumps it up, you know? And you know, for a moment you do go
02:32through your Afrocentric tree hugger moment. Of course. But once you grow it out,
02:36it's like, you're like, I love my hair now. Right, right, right. So it takes a little bit
02:40of a moment to get to it, but texture is really in right now. Yeah. You know, I'm so jealous of
02:44natural women because they can do color. Like, I, I, it's so hard. I want to experiment, but you
02:48really can't do it. It really is. Yes. And now it's more alternative to the relaxer now,
02:52which is out of character treatment. Right. It's a great alternative to the relaxer,
02:55because you're able to still color. Right. And still have it without any breakage or any damage.
03:00The relaxer just is a harsh, harsh chemical. Yeah. Now, I don't suggest everybody go natural,
03:06though, because natural ain't for everybody. It isn't. It isn't. So, you know, so if you got
03:10that real, real tight curled hair, you know, you might want to get it relaxed or at least a
03:16texturizer. Kind of loosen it up. Okay. All right. Well, thank you, Derek J.
03:19Thank you for having me. And we will see you
