Jason Bolden and Adair Curtis discuss balance, interior design and JSN Studios with Kela Walker at Essence Fashion House.
Transcript
00:00So, Jason, you are the fashion stylist.
00:03Adair, you are the interior designer.
00:07You better clear that up.
00:08So, Jason is an interior designer, too.
00:10Jason started as an interior designer.
00:12When I met him, he was a designer.
00:14He was not styling yet.
00:16And because he wanted to do everything and conquer the world,
00:20you know, my first thing was, well, you've got to be known for one thing first.
00:23So, what are you going to be known for?
00:24And he kind of toiled in the world of interior design for a little while,
00:30and celebrity styling just started to really take off really quickly for him.
00:34And it was like, okay, well, that's the one thing.
00:35Your one thing is styling.
00:37And then we can, you know, conquer every other world leader.
00:40Now, being that you do both, do you prefer, I mean, obviously, fashion styling is where you're at.
00:45Do you like one more than the other?
00:47Do you wish that people were coming to you specifically for interior design?
00:50Like, if you could do it all over again, would it be fashion style?
00:53Well, I wouldn't change it at all.
00:55I just, I, the difference is furniture doesn't talk, which is amazing, right?
01:00You know, you know what?
01:03Sometimes they think they can be like, ooh, shoot.
01:07I'm like, ooh, I dress.
01:09But, like, it's just, it's a very different moment.
01:12I think when Adair and I, like, this is the thing,
01:14Adair is, like, hardcore engulfed in interior.
01:17And it's, like, my job as the creative director of JSN Studio,
01:22it's, like, everything gets creatively brought through me.
01:25And sometimes not through me, because Adair just does it.
01:28But it's just for, it's, it's nice, because furniture does not talk back.
01:33It's so nice.
01:34And, obviously, all my clients know this is, but it's just, like,
01:38it's nice to just drop a sofa and be like, ooh.
01:41The clients on interior side talk back.
01:43No, they don't.
01:44Not to you.
01:45They talk back to Adair and I don't talk.
01:47Talk a little bit more about the formation of JSN Studio
01:50and how you two actually do find the balance in working together.
01:54Huh.
01:56There's no such thing as balance.
01:58Not really.
02:00I mean, I mean, work consumes our lives.
02:05So, the balance, we have to, we have to really work hard
02:08to find time for personal space, you know, personal time.
02:12And that, you know, you see sometimes includes, like, having a baby.
02:17So.
02:18He's like, I'm sorry.
02:22But, yeah, we look for the time.
02:24We have to be cognizant of, you know, how much time we're spending over here
02:27as opposed to over there.
02:28And, you know, I think for us, though, like, our baseline is us.
02:35Like, neither one of the sides could actually, the business could not drive
02:42without our baseline, which is us.
02:44Like, we're, like, we're together all the time.
02:46We see each other all the time.
02:47We work with each other all the time.
02:49And that is the joy and the magic.
02:51And everyone that we work with from, you know, Gavin Dwayne to Yarshi Kiti,
02:58it's like, it just, everybody has to understand that.
03:02And all of our clients literally speak the same language.
03:04So, if I say, hey, I can't do this right now, but I'm going to send an assistant
03:09because I'm in Boston doing IBF, the clients are like, okay, go.
03:15So, it's like, it's really great to work with people who understand that balance
03:19and speak the same language, but our baseline is us.
