00:00Today on Essence Live, it is Fashion Week here in New York,
00:03and we have celebrity hairstylist Ursula Steven in studio teaching you
00:06how to rock all of those runway trends the real way.
00:09Plus, we celebrated our second annual Essence Street Style Awards
00:12with a dope block party.
00:14It was a huge event, and we're going to recap it right here for you.
00:17We had Gabrielle Union, our closet crush honoree,
00:19Mel B co-hosting a fierce fashion show,
00:22and Ciara, our curator of cool, all on-site to receive their awards.
00:26And it's a very special Slater shade, fashion themes.
00:29We talk trends or nah, and of course that Grace Jones memoir,
00:33don't go anywhere because Essence Live starts now.
00:46Welcome, welcome, welcome to this week's fashion-themed fierce episode
00:50of Essence Live.
00:51Per the usual, I want to hear from you out there.
00:54Please use the hashtag Essence Live so that we can hear your comments,
00:57questions or concerns, but remember, keep it cute.
01:00I want to hear everything that you think about the trends
01:02we're going to discuss to Slater shade topics.
01:04Now, a highlight for us was the annual Essence Street Style Block Party.
01:08We'll have a full recap of that event a little bit later on in the show.
01:11But first, we have an exclusive interview with Closet Crush Award recipient, Gabrielle Union.
01:16Hey guys, it's Gia Peppers here backstage at the Essence Style Block Party,
01:25and we have the beautiful Gabrielle Union here.
01:27How are you doing today?
01:28Amazing, happy to be in Brooklyn.
01:30This bob is giving me life, honey.
01:32It looks amazing.
01:33And there's the man that did it.
01:35Larry, Larry Sims.
01:37So you have this beautiful fashion style.
01:40We love your style.
01:41Who is your style inspiration?
01:43Oh God, it changes every day.
01:44I mean, some days it's Beyonce, some days it's Ciara,
01:47some days it's Jamie Chung, Olivia Palermo,
01:50and sometimes it's the people closest to me.
01:53It changes.
01:54Yeah, anywhere.
01:55I'm walking around here, I'm pilfering.
01:59Yeah, getting little inspiration.
02:01So you just celebrated your one year anniversary.
02:04Congratulations.
02:05We love you guys, you and Dwayne.
02:07Do you guys style each other when you go out?
02:08No.
02:09Never.
02:10On occasion, I'll be like, what do you think?
02:13And I'm like, interesting.
02:17But no, we don't have veto power, and I definitely don't dress him.
02:21I wish I could take the credit, or not.
02:24But no, his stylist is an amazing black woman named Callie Ann Barnett,
02:28and she's dope, but yeah, that's their world.
02:31I just wave from the sidelines.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Being Mary Jane, we are all wanting to see it.
02:36How much has the character influenced your own style?
02:38It's a little buttoned up for you.
02:40Yeah, I mean, she has a regular day job that she's got to be,
02:44you know, delivering the news in a way that's not distracting
02:47from the information.
02:48So, she's definitely a fashionista, but it's dramatically different
02:52than my own personal style.
02:54So, all of Mary Jane's clothes stay in Mary Jane's closet in Atlanta.
03:00There have been a couple purses that have made it back to Miami, though.
03:03Yes.
03:04And then the last question I wanted to ask you,
03:06can you describe the essence of your personal style?
03:08Gabrielle Union's personal style.
03:10The essence of my personal style, evolving.
03:12Evolving, and it's all about freedom, you know what I mean?
03:16The second I kind of fall into too many trends
03:19or worried about the judgment
03:21or I want to please this group of people,
03:23I'm trying to please this group of people,
03:24it doesn't feel free.
03:26It feels like I just put myself in a prison.
03:27So, I evolve. It ebbs, it flows.
03:30You know, I get it right, I get it wrong,
03:31but by whose estimation, you know?
03:33If you feel good and look good, I'm doing all right, yeah.
03:39Thank you so much, Gabrielle, for stopping by.
03:42We also had the chance to catch up with Mel B
03:44before she hit the stage for the Street Style Fashion Show
03:46to talk about her personal style.
03:48Take a look.
03:51Hey, guys, we are backstage
03:53at the Essence Street Style Block Party,
03:55and we ran into this beautiful lady, Miss Mel B.
03:59How are you, right?
04:00Good lighting.
04:01No, you are beautiful, though, without the lighting.
04:02Oh, thank you.
04:03Good makeup, good makeup.
04:04Your personal style, we've seen change.
04:06We, of course, met you in the Spice Girls.
04:08Your style was amazing and loud,
04:10and now you're a bit more, like, reserved a little.
04:13Well, it depends what day you catch me on.
04:15Like, today I've gone a little bit sleek
04:17and a little bit kind of formal-ish.
04:19But I still have my crazy moments
04:20with my leopard print and my crazy hair.
04:22But I'm more of the curvier side kind of girl.
04:25I like that.
04:26The Nicki Minaj vibe.
04:28Yes, because your body is beautiful.
04:29You look amazing.
04:30So how much does your everyday attitude
04:33really influence what you're going to wear?
04:35Because some people wake up tired.
04:36Well, I usually wake up tired
04:37because I have three daughters,
04:38and I usually go straight to my sportswear
04:40because I'm usually working out.
04:41And then after that, if I'm going out for dinner
04:43with the hubby or my girlfriends
04:45or going to watch a movie,
04:46it all depends where I'm going.
04:48But I like to make an effort.
04:49I think it's important to make an effort these days.
04:51That's awesome.
04:52And then apart from...
04:53Apart from when you go into the airport,
04:55I dress like I'm in pajamas in my sweats.
04:58Yeah, because you don't want people
04:59to follow you in the airport, of course.
05:00Well, no, they do.
05:01But I just like to be comfortable.
05:03If there was a song that would describe your style,
05:05what's the name of that song?
05:06I don't know.
05:07Is there a song called Schizophrenic?
05:09There might be.
05:10I'm sure there's a song called Schizophrenic.
05:12Or flip-flop all over the place.
05:14That one.
05:15I think I'm fun.
05:16And I have so many different personalities,
05:18just like every woman does.
05:19I like to really elaborate on whatever I'm feeling that day,
05:22whether it be loud and colorful,
05:24or sleek and sophisticated,
05:26or a little bit hoochimama.
05:27I mean, it all depends what you feel like.
05:29And that's me, and I just go with it.
05:31We love Mel B here at Essence,
05:33so thank you so much for coming backstage.
05:35Love you guys.
05:36Yes, we'll see you guys later.
05:39Thank you so much, Mel B, for stopping by.
05:41The fashion show was definitely a hit.
05:43More Essence Live Fashion Week edition to come.
05:46And still ahead, we have an exclusive interview
05:48with Ciara, this year's winner, the curator of Cool.
05:51And just in case you missed it
05:53and you weren't able to make it out to our block party,
05:55I have a little piece of what you missed.
05:58Check this out.

07:29Be confident. Be you. Become a member.
07:59まунx these people who I just look up to so much.
08:01It's just been amazing the whole day and it's just a beautiful event.
08:05Welcome back to our New York Fashion Week edition of Essence Live.
08:09Joining me now here in studio is celebrity hairstylist.
08:11Salon owner. Overall just fierce and fabulous hair guru.
08:15My friend Ursula Stephen, how are you?
08:17I'm good. How are you?
08:18I'm fabulous. Welcome. Thank you for coming.
08:20Of course.
08:21I'm happy to have you off to the Slater Shade couch but you're sticking around a little bit later on to play a little bit more.
08:25But now I want to talk about some of these runway trends that we're seeing.
08:29Of course after every fashion week you see all of these looks, some of them are really
08:32whimsical, some are not, and everyone wants to know how to make them work in real life.
08:36So we've picked three different trends and I want you to tell me a little bit about them
08:40and how the real girl, the everyday girl, can introduce this fierce in terms of her
08:44daily lifestyle.
08:45So the first look is faux fringe.
08:48We saw it a lot in Christian Siriano's shows.
08:51How do we bring that to life the real way?
08:53I'm just going to call it a bang, or you may know it best as a bang, but this is a fringe.
08:59What exactly is that?
09:00It's definitely a fringe.
09:01It's obviously, it's not, when people think of bangs, they think really heavy and faux
09:05frontal.
09:06But when you want to get away from that restrictive type of cut, you get a fringe.
09:10And I think this is amazing.
09:11The faux fringe is very popular.
09:13A lot of girls are wearing it.
09:15I have done them before and when I have clients that don't really want to commit to wearing
09:19or cutting their bangs, I always recommend getting a faux fur.
09:22A faux, not a faux fur.
09:24A faux fur.
09:25A faux fur is good too.
09:26A faux bang.
09:27And also, even if I have a client that wants to actually get a cut, I'll cut their hair
09:31this way instead of giving them a really heavy, blunt bang.
09:34So that way they have an option, so it's not so much of a commitment, you know?
09:37So is this like, so you can get like maybe a fake clip-on piece or something along those
09:40lines?
09:41You can just clip them on whenever you feel like having bags for the day.
09:44See if you want to commit.
09:45Yes.
09:46Okay.
09:47Can I have a clip-on bag?
09:48Uh, hmm.
09:49I'm always trying to keep me from getting bags.
09:50You think about it.
09:51Ugh!
09:52Anyway.
09:53Okay, so our second look is called the updated pompadour.
09:55It was at the Bare Neck Show.
09:57Pompadours seem like they have a lot of work that go into them, like the structure and the
10:01styling.
10:02But this look, they're playing now a little bit more with different shapes.
10:06The sides seem a little bit more severe.
10:08Yeah.
10:09How can we make this work in the real world, if you will?
10:12I think this is really, it looks a little difficult, but it's not really.
10:15I think it's really all about what you said, shapes, creating a shape.
10:18And it's, for a real girl, you can just kind of slick her hair back into a slick pony, put
10:23in a bun in the back, and flip that side back and pin it, and you're good to go.
10:26Really easy.
10:27Just about creating that shape.
10:28Is there such thing as too high?
10:29No, if you can rock it high, honey, rock it.
10:31Okay.
10:32All right.
10:33The higher the better.
10:34Okay.
10:35Yes.
10:36Can I have a pompadour?
10:37Let me think about it.
10:38Okay, thank you.
10:39And our third look is called Whimsical Hair.
10:41Now, this was seen on the Tracy Reese runways, and it kind of reminds me a little bit of Bedhead,
10:48like you, your hair scarf came off in the middle of the night, and you would wake up looking
10:52like this.
10:53Okay.
10:54So many of our gals can't necessarily wear this to the workplace in the cube.
10:57Is there a way to transition this into your everyday look?
11:01Maybe it's for work or for play?
11:02Yes.
11:03Maybe it's more of a play look.
11:04Absolutely.
11:05I think to take this to the real world or to the real streets, as we say, what you would
11:10do is just pull your hair back into a ponytail and just pull some pieces out just to give
11:14like, just a few little tendrils along the face.
11:16That's it.
11:17A little, you know, more whim, not that much sickle.
11:20You know?
11:21More whim, less sickle.
11:22Yeah, not too much sickle, but a lot of whim.
11:23And do you have to use a lot of products for this?
11:25No product, really.
11:26No products.
11:27I think that it's really a fuzzy hairstyle.
11:28You could even add some dry shampoo just to kind of dry it, make it a little more dry
11:31and fluffy.
11:32So after you pull the hair back into a ponytail, you want to probably spray it, and then with
11:35the dry shampoo, and then you want to pull those pieces out around the face and just
11:37kind of like little tendrils, you know?
11:39Now, do you have a personal look that you think is just something that you can't wait
11:42to see for fall or play with more for fall?
11:44I like the faux bangs.
11:45The bangs?
11:46Yeah, I really like the faux bangs.
11:47I think they're getting popular, and I like the idea that the girls are having the option
11:50of wearing bangs without the commitment.
11:52So that's the great part about it.
11:54You want to always have that versatility.
11:55Awesome.
11:56Thank you so much, Ursula, for joining us in studio.
11:58To find out more about Ursula Steven, check out her site, UrsulaSteven.com, or visit her salon
12:03in Brooklyn.
12:04Plus, she is sticking around for Slade or Shade.
12:06And we have an exclusive interview with Ciara coming up next.
12:10Don't go anywhere.
12:11More Essence Live when we get back.
12:16Hi, Ciara.
12:17How are you tonight?
12:18You know what?
12:19I'm amazing.
12:20You look amazing.
12:21Tell us who you're wearing.
12:22I'm wearing David Coleman, actually.
12:23You are tonight being honored as the curator of cool.
12:26I love following you on Instagram.
12:27All your outfits are amazing.
12:29How does it feel to be honored by Essence?
12:31Of course, Essence magazine is like...
12:32Oh, my gosh.
12:33Come on.
12:34This is so cool.
12:35Being honored by Essence is really sweet, I have to say.
12:38I feel very blessed, you know?
12:39And I guess the fact that Essence thinks I'm cool is pretty darn cool.
12:43So, yeah.
12:44I'm thankful.
12:45And you're a mommy now, and you have to dress a little boy.
12:48So, what are your go-to places for the future?
12:50Oh, my goodness.
12:51I have to say the Ralph Lauren store, the baby polo store, is the best for me because everything
12:56fits in perfectly.
12:58And then I love going to Baby Gap, too.
13:00Oh, the prices are so great, you know?
13:03So, between those two stores, I have this wardrobe pretty much covered.
13:06And then there's some cool little boutique stores that I run into sometimes.
13:10But those are my two staples for my baby.
13:12And I am actually addicted to shopping for him.
13:15So, I realize I've blown a lot of money on, you know, shoes actually not being able to fit in one week later.
13:23So, moms take it from me.
13:24Do not buy your baby too many shoes when they're so tiny because their feet grow every week.
13:30And then lastly, you have Russell.
13:32Do you shop with him now?
13:33Are you helping him be a little bit more stylish?
13:35You know what?
13:36He's awesome.
13:37Honestly, we just have fun.
13:39We've been shopping before, and it's really fun, actually.
13:42You would think that, you know, it can get kind of tricky when, you know, boyfriend and girlfriend go.
13:47But we have fun.
13:48Yeah, we do.
13:49Awesome.
13:50We are so happy to have you here tonight.
13:52You look beautiful.
13:54We love seeing you.
13:55So, congratulations on being our curator of cool.
13:57Thank you so much.
13:58That's so cool.
14:22Hey, guys.
14:23Gia Peppers here for the Essence Street Style Block Party.
14:38And we are partying, and we found some beautiful ladies rocking the trendy head wrap.
14:43So tell me how you all feel when you put these on.
14:45I feel like I should feel.
14:47I feel like a queen.
14:48It's a crown.
14:49A lot of people see it as covering up your hair, trying to hide it.
14:51But no, I feel like it's a creative expression.
14:53I see how much love we get.
14:55It makes me happy on the inside because it wasn't always cool to be me.
14:59My head wrap is my glory.
15:01It's bright.
15:02It looks confident and vibrant.
15:03It's like I'm putting all my magic back on again.
15:06I feel my crown without a head wrap, but once this head wrap is on, I always feel like
15:10I'm placing my crown on my head for the world to see.
15:13It accentuates how queenly we already are.
15:16So, it's showing my royalty without even having to show my hair.
15:19I love wearing head wraps.
15:20I love it.
15:21I love it.
15:24Welcome back to Essence Live.
15:25Okay, so we have a quick show recap for you guys.
15:27We discussed all things fashion.
15:29It's only right that we continue to discuss it in my favorite part of the show.
15:32It's time for Slade or Shade.
15:34You just saw our first guest chit-chatting about some runway hair trends and how you can
15:38make them your own.
15:39Celebrity hairstylist Ursula Steven, are you ready to throw some shade?
15:42All day.
15:43Welcome back.
15:45You seem to like to hold that position there on the Slater Shade sofa.
15:47Mm-hmm.
15:48Our next guest plays the assistant to one of the most stylish women on primetime television
15:52and has some fun style moments on the show as well, Empire's own Tyranda Jones.
15:56Welcome.
15:58And don't be a stranger.
15:59Oh, I won't.
16:00Okay.
16:01I know we got lots to talk about.
16:02We got fashion, we got everything to talk about.
16:03How involved are you and the cast members when it comes to selecting your wardrobe on the
16:07show, Empire?
16:08Very involved.
16:09Last season, I actually wore everything that came out of my closet.
16:12Really?
16:13Yes.
16:14Everything was mine.
16:15Interesting.
16:16From the clothes to the makeup to the shoes.
16:18This season, we have the casting director.
16:21No, not the casting director.
16:22The wardrobe director, Paolo.
16:24This season, I don't have to touch anything outside of my closet because he got some fun
16:28stuff for Portia this season.
16:29Okay.
16:30Awesome.
16:31All right.
16:32We cannot wait to see it.
16:33It's going to be coming out soon.
16:34Next, we have super fashion blogger, founder of fashionbombdaily.com, Ms. Claire Somers.
16:37How are you?
16:38Hi, I'm great.
16:39Welcome.
16:40It's your first time as well here.
16:41Thank you for having me.
16:42You ready to throw some slate or some shade?
16:43I'm always ready.
16:44All right.
16:45So, lastly, all of you fashionistas that are out there and fashionistas.
16:49I don't even know if that's a real word.
16:50We're just going to make it up a little bit and go with it.
16:52Make sure you join the conversation and chime in on our social media platforms using
16:55the hashtag Essence Live.
16:57All right.
16:58Let's get started.
16:59So, the controversial performance artist and fashion icon, Grace Jones, is set to release
17:03her much-awaited autobiography, I'll Never Write My Memoirs, later this month.
17:08Snippets of the book have recently been released where she slams some of the music industry's
17:11biggest names, including Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Beyonce, whom she says all copied her.
17:16An excerpt from the book reads,
17:18I have been so copied by those people who have made fortunes that people assume I am that rich.
17:23But I did things for the excitement, the dare, the fact that it was new, not for the money,
17:27and to make many times I was the first, not the beneficiary.
17:31Okay.
17:32So, is this a slay?
17:33Because Ms. Jones is a living legend and may have a valid point.
17:36It's evident that some artists draw from Grace Jones' inspiration.
17:39It is also no surprise that she'd hold her tongue, especially when writing her own book,
17:42and not speak her truth.
17:44Or is it a shade?
17:45Artistry is very subjective, and it's unfair to say that these artists copied her.
17:49All right.
17:50So, I know that was a lot.
17:51But on the count of three, it was a lot.
17:53It was a lot.
17:54We like to give you a lot.
17:55Drop it heavy old-fashioned.
17:56All right.
17:57So, is this a slay or shade?
17:58Count of three.
17:59One, two, three.
18:00Oh.
18:01Oh.
18:02Oh.
18:03We have two slayshades.
18:04Oh, yeah.
18:05I'm a slayshade.
18:06I'm sorry.
18:07I'm a slayshade.
18:08Not everybody's slayshade.
18:09Okay.
18:10So, Ursula, why are you a slayshade?
18:11Because I do get her point.
18:12You know, she wants her recognition, and that's what a lot of people in that position want,
18:17because you put so much work and energy into putting an image out there.
18:21You want someone to recognize you.
18:22But at the same time, that is the meaning and definition of the word inspiration, to inspire
18:27others.
18:28You always get your accolade.
18:29Mm-hmm.
18:30You know?
18:31So, it's touchy.
18:32It's very touchy.
18:33And there's one true thing that she did say.
18:35I read, like, some of her excerpts.
18:36Okay.
18:37And she said that she's sure that some of the artists that are copying her don't even
18:42know it.
18:43But she said she's sure that their stylist does.
18:45Do.
18:46Mm-hmm.
18:47I saw that.
18:48And that is true.
18:49A lot of times people are hiring hair, makeup wardrobe people to give them an image or help
18:51them, you know, find this look.
18:52Mm-hmm.
18:53And they know, but the artist doesn't know, so you can't really blame the artist directly.
18:56That's fair.
18:57Yeah.
18:58Taronda?
18:59Well, the same thing she said.
19:00Now, as far as the shade part, I just feel like, you know, when people say imitation is
19:07a form of flattery.
19:08I mean, that's a good thing that you got people mimicking.
19:10Right.
19:11You know, you're iconic.
19:12Yes.
19:13That's what icons do.
19:14And then later on down the road, everybody is going to want to do what you do.
19:19Right.
19:20I plan on being iconic, you know?
19:21There you go.
19:22Put it out there in the universe.
19:24Ask about me later.
19:25Of course.
19:26Claire?
19:27I think if you ask any of those artists she named, they would pay her her just due and
19:32her kudos and respect.
19:33I don't think it's a matter of them trying to steal.
19:36I mean, they are inspired by her.
19:38But she said it herself.
19:39She did it for, you know, the excitement and the dare and not for the money.
19:42Right.
19:43How can you get mad if they're benefiting from it, you know?
19:45That's true.
19:46Those are good points.
19:47Good points.
19:48All right.
19:49Let's check in with our Facebook family.
19:51Williams KC says, and I quote, fashion repeats itself almost like recycled.
19:55It's unfair to say people on this generation copied her.
19:58That's ridiculous.
19:59Okay.
20:00Well.
20:01All right.
20:02Well, you seem pretty strong in your point of view.
20:03We're staying over here.
20:05Next up, we have Vanessa Williams.
20:07She made history in 1983 when she was the first African-American woman to be crowned Miss America.
20:12Just two months after Vanessa was crowned, she made Miss America history yet again when
20:15she was famously forced to resign over nude photos that were published without her consent.
20:19Though Vanessa dubs her Miss America experience as her rock bottom, last Sunday she returned
20:24to the Miss America pageant as head judge where the event opened with a public apology to Williams
20:28from pageant CEO Sam Haskell.
20:31Is this a slay?
20:32Because Vanessa was the bigger woman for coming back to the Miss America pageant as head judge.
20:35She was able to mentor young women who stood where she once stood and she received a long
20:39overdue apology.
20:40It's kind of like the icing on the cake.
20:42Or is this a shade?
20:43They stripped her crown years ago and she was given 72 hours to resign.
20:46She shouldn't have returned to judge for them.
20:48All right.
20:49Slay or shade panel?
20:50What say you?
20:51One, two, three.
20:52Slay.
20:53You seem kind of slow there, Ursula, with that slay.
20:55Yeah.
20:56All right.
20:57I'm stuck.
20:58I'm back.
20:59She's pushing.
21:00Only because I'm very confused on the definition of the slay and shade part of it.
21:04I just feel like my opinion on it is that the apology was way overdue.
21:08Mm-hmm.
21:09And in this day and age that we live in, if pictures get leaked without your consent, it's
21:13like, oh, wow.
21:14You know what I mean?
21:15People are not losing contracts for them.
21:17That is strange.
21:18So how many years ago it happened and it was not her fault.
21:21Over 30 years ago.
21:22Mm-hmm.
21:23They did that to her.
21:24And I think it was a hard one.
21:25They took too long to apologize.
21:26Yeah.
21:27So I think it's amazing that she went to get her apology.
21:29So that's, I guess that's what slay.
21:31She shows that she's a bigger person, I think.
21:32Yeah.
21:33Yeah.
21:34So I think that's good.
21:35It's always good to be the bigger person.
21:36So that's, was that a slay or shade?
21:37Just put it down.
21:38Just put it down.
21:39Just put it down.
21:40Just put it down.
21:41Just put it down.
21:42Just put it down.
21:43Just put it down.
21:44Yeah.
21:45Because she's a bigger person.
21:46Taronda?
21:47Your thoughts?
21:48I need to be first because she can't say all my answers.
21:50It's like, damn it.
21:51Actually, y'all probably be a really good family feud team.
21:54We got to switch seats.
21:55We're going to have to rotate these seats.
21:56Because I know you want your chance, too.
21:58Due to the fact that she was the bigger person to actually go back.
22:02Because people could have easily just been like, you know what?
22:04I don't want your apology.
22:05I don't, I don't want to deal with it.
22:07I don't want to, you know, people can easily back down.
22:09But she didn't.
22:10And I think also, too, it helps that she went on to have a really successful career.
22:13Yeah.
22:14And I saw in the video clip that he also apologized, Sam Caskel also apologized to her mother,
22:19who was in the audience as well, for anything that it may have put the family through,
22:22any embarrassment.
22:23Claire, your thoughts?
22:24Um, slay, I'm with these ladies.
22:26And, you know, I'm always a fan of women keeping it classy, you know, taking the higher ground.
22:32And she did that.
22:33And, you know, thank goodness they apologized to her.
22:35So, you know, I think she did the right thing.
22:37And she looks fierce last night.
22:38And she looks fierce.
22:39And slay all the time.
22:40Alright, so let's check back in with our Facebook fam and see what you all were saying
22:43about Vanessa and the pageant.
22:45Demetria Harrison says, slay, because that crown didn't make her who she is today.
22:49So, thank you for chiming in, Demetria.
22:51Sadly, today is the last day of New York Fashion Week.
22:53Stars came out in droves.
22:54Shows have been filled with interesting garments and whimsical theatrics.
22:58And we can't forget about runway trends.
23:00From outrageous over-the-top accessories and purses to the stylish pajama,
23:04one trend that stood out were faux locks.
23:06Nicole Miller featured models rocking this look and celebrities like Zendaya,
23:09and recently Miley Cyrus rocked them.
23:11So, do we love the faux lock look?
23:15That's a slay.
23:16Or is it shade?
23:17Are we saying, nah, to this look?
23:19On the count of three.
23:20One, two, three.
23:21Slayde or shade?
23:22Slayde, slayde.
23:23Shade, honey.
23:24Oh, okay.
23:25You're gonna go last.
23:26Claire?
23:27You're gonna go last.
23:28Claire, your thoughts on the slay?
23:32You know, I think it's, you know, it's fashion.
23:35You always try and experiment with fun, new and different hairstyles.
23:39And I say, why not?
23:40As a wearer of locks yourself, do you feel in either way when it's,
23:43because it's like a journey.
23:44There's a process.
23:45There's a lot of care that goes into it.
23:47It is, but I mean, I have blonde locks, so they're obviously processed.
23:51I'm not like your typical lock wearer.
23:53And I think that people like Zendaya, for example, when she wore a full lock,
23:56she brought the hairstyle to the red carpet and made it seem more acceptable
24:01and more mainstream and not something that's like kind of, it's been looked down upon.
24:05So, I don't know.
24:06I don't mind, I don't mind it personally.
24:08Understood.
24:09As we said, it's the lady with the locks.
24:11Yeah, I know.
24:12Tarana, what are your thoughts?
24:14Slayde.
24:15I just feel like due to the fact that I own my own individuality,
24:19I just feel like whatever you're gonna wear, whether it's from the hair to the clothes
24:23or the shoes, you just gotta own it.
24:24I feel like those pictures you just showed me, they owned it.
24:27As long as you owning the look, you're fine.
24:29It's fine with me.
24:30Just own your own individuality.
24:31Okay.
24:32That's all.
24:33Now this one over here.
24:34Yeah, what you got to say?
24:35What's the first thing she made her mind up on?
24:36What's the shade, Ursula?
24:37The first thing she ever made her mind up on today.
24:39Okay.
24:40Okay, shade it.
24:41What's the shade?
24:42I just feel like I love dreads, I love locks.
24:44I like them when they're natural.
24:45I do not like faux locks.
24:46I do not think they're attractive, they don't flow nicely, they don't look sexy.
24:50I don't like anything about them.
24:52And I'm always doing interviews and they're asking me, oh, you know, what trend do you wish would go away?
24:56Faux locks.
24:57Bye-bye.
24:58Yes.
24:59I love natural, like I love your hair.
25:01Like I always say, oh my God, I love your hair, Claire.
25:04But I like when locks are natural.
25:06There's something about them when they're natural.
25:07I have to ask you, how do you feel when different ethnic groups try it?
25:10I don't really mind it.
25:11I'm not that stylist or that, you know, person that feels like, oh, it should be for the black girls or for the white girls.
25:18I think, like she said, hair is what you feel like wearing.
25:20And if you like it, you wear it.
25:22I don't mind that.
25:23I don't mind seeing a white girl with braids.
25:24I think it's amazing.
25:25So it's the execution you have an issue with?
25:28I think so.
25:29Okay.
25:30I just don't think they look attractive, the faux ones.
25:31Okay.
25:32Well fair enough.
25:33The faux ones.
25:34The faux.
25:35The faux looks.
25:36The faux looks.
25:37The faux looks.
25:38The faux looks.
25:39Well thank you all of you ladies for joining me today.
