00:00Hi guys, it's Dina, hair and beauty editor. Today I have with me Jane Carter. She is the
00:09founder and CEO of Jane Carter Solution. Hey Jane, how are you? So glad to have you here.
00:15Thanks for inviting me. We're going to talk a little bit about what you should really ask
00:20yourself and ask your stylist when considering going natural. Women have a perspective of what
00:27they perceive to be beautiful. So, you know, coming from the salon environment, for you
00:34to have like a smooth look, it kind of makes your face look a little softer. So I think
00:38that when you're going to go to like a more textured look, there are a lot of things that
00:42you need to do to kind of soften the look. And I think that this is not really a style
00:48trend issue. It's not a trend. It's a lifestyle. It is a lifestyle choice. And I kind of feel
00:54like there's a whole energy attached to it. It's kind of like the, you know, the Angela
00:59Davis, you know, in the 70s kind of thing. And there was a whole energy around, you know,
01:03women and self-expression and freedom and their hair said something about them. And it was
01:09kind of like, because, you know, whenever I go to these events and there's like a lot
01:13of women that are natural, it's like this camaraderie, you know, because everybody's kind of gone
01:18through the process. So I think that first to identify like what, what's beautiful to
01:25you. Okay. And you know, whenever, whenever I have clients and I do a consultation, I have
01:28them go through magazines and just rip out pictures. It doesn't have to be like a picture
01:33like, I want to look like her, but there's like something about that picture that invokes
01:38something relate to. Like she's 40 or she's sexy or she's professional. So you can kind of create
01:43that, you know, for your client or help them like embrace that. Okay. What is the look
01:48they're trying to accomplish? And maybe post it on their walls. Yeah. A storyboard to kind
01:52of keep them inspired. Nice. I love that. Yeah. It's very important. Okay. So it's important
01:59to identify not who you want to be like, but more like the end result that you want to get.
02:06Sure. Like the, the, what, what does that evoke in you? Okay. What's the look? You know,
02:12is it sexy? Is it, you know, so you kind of can gear somebody towards that. Okay. And
02:17I think that, you know, there, there's, I mean, my personal salon stylist perspective is, and
02:23people go through this whole transitioning conversation. My thing is just like, you make a commitment,
02:29you decide why you're committed to that. If it's the style piece, then okay, you can do
02:34all kinds of things. You can do protective styling, which makes me a little nervous because scalp
02:39hair is the foundation of healthy hair care. So if you're covering up your scalp and there's
02:43like, you know, the number one reason for hair loss is inflammation. So if you're braiding
02:46or you're weaving, you know, I just, okay, I'm just not really. What is the, what's the answer
02:53to that though? If you're not going to use protective styling, what should women do when they're in
02:58that transition period and they've decided that they want to be natural? Well, I mean, I think
03:02that first of all, just kind of going from, you know, your perception of your hair smooth
03:09or maybe blown out, whether it's flat ironed or whatever, to like a natural look, you can
03:14rod set it, you can straw set it, you can, you know, do all kinds of styling just to get
03:20a different sense of yourself. And I think that, you know, you know, so there's like the whole
03:25conversation about, okay, relax my hair and now I have enough regrowth. Cut your hair. Just
03:31embrace it. It's your hair. Big chop it. It grows. Done. Like, love it. Change your makeup. You
03:37know what I'm saying? Wear bigger earrings. Exactly. Like, it's not that serious. I mean,
03:41that's just the way it feels as a stylist. And I, and I think that that's, you know, that's
03:45also very like freeing. Like we get so attached to this hair thing. It's just hair. It grows
03:52back. And, and the thing is, is that you can never really get to see, like, because
03:58there, there is a whole spiritual process with that, you know? Let's talk a little bit
04:02about that. What is that spiritual journey like? It's like, almost like anything else.
04:06When you decide to clean your closet, you have a lot of clutter, you just throw it out.
04:10Which I never do. You know? I throw it out. Just like I'm done. You know, there's, there is a
04:16process. Okay, today I'm getting rid of all of this. Okay. You know? And so I feel like, you
04:21know, there's such a big, there's more of a big deal made about how do I transition?
04:25You know, maybe the conversation is, what am I committed to? You know? And what's the
04:31risk that I'm willing to take to like, be able to get in the shower, run three miles,
04:36come home, take a shower, put some product in my hair and go to work and look fabulous.
04:40Right. You know? Because that's what the, that's what we're trying to accomplish anyway.
04:43That is. That is. We just want to look great at the end of the day.
04:46Right. Exactly. So I just feel like, you know, there's a whole like attachment conversation
04:51that's, you know, it's, it's, it, there is an evolution that's really necessary. So once
04:59your relaxer grows out and then what happens? You just need your hair to be five inches,
05:04that's two inches. It's never enough. It's never enough. That's my whole point.
05:07Yeah. So I, I almost feel like, you know, it is really like a, a, a, a personal journey
05:14that, you know, that maybe it's a, there's an opportunity to write about how you feel about
05:18yourself as a woman and your, and what you perceive beauty to be. And, you know, it's like,
05:24it's like the parachute on the cliff, like, you know, and, and, but I do think that, you know,
05:31you know, for a lot of women, I, I have conversations all the time about the right combination of
05:37products and how do I get my hair, you know, how do I accomplish, you know, the right curl pattern.
05:44So another one, another thing that you should consider is understanding the, what, the right
05:48types of products that work well for your hair. You need a great stylist. And, you know,
05:54we just did yesterday a photo shoot in Phoenix with my friend Arlette. And you really need
06:01a great stylist because if you no longer chemically treat your hair, your hair is all flat. It's
06:06one color. You really need a good colorist. You really need a stylist who can prescribe a
06:10regimen, who can prescribe products. Who can color? Because now you have all these options.
06:15Who can shape your hair? Who can just make this painless for you?
06:19Who can look at this?
06:20I'm not so traumatic.
06:21Yeah, I know. Because women work way too hard. It's like, why are you working this hard?
06:25The objective is to make life simpler.
06:27Nice.
06:28Well, I think we've covered everything today.
06:31Okay.
06:32Thank you so much, Jane.
06:33You're welcome.
06:34Thank you, Dina. It was great.
