Kym Whitley talks about adoption and her show 'Raising Whitely.'
Transcript
00:00Raising Whitley is about me and my son and the village I created around him to
00:09help me raise him. I guess I should tell the viewers that my son is adopted so
00:14they'll know I became an instant mom. So that's how it starts. It doesn't matter
00:19if a child comes to you or through you. That love is still the same. You are still
00:25a mother and that Vanessa Bell Calloway, my very dear friend, told me. She said, Kim, relax. She said,
00:31with every new baby, a new mother is born. She was like, take your time. You're new, too.
00:36What have I learned? I've learned a lot. Having a baby, as you probably know, I've
00:45learned that I disrespected my parents as a baby or as a kid because I did not know
00:53that they loved me this much. I didn't understand it. I didn't understand it.
00:57They kept me alive because you've got to keep that baby alive for a lot of years.
01:01The baby can do nothing. And I saw my mother the first three months take care of
01:06Joshua. I was like, did you do that for me? Did you love me like that? So I had to
01:12apologize to my parents. I wasn't a bad kid, but I said, you know, I apologize if I
01:16ever did anything to disrespect you because if you're pouring the love into a child
01:21that didn't come through me, you really, really, really loved me and you took care
01:27of me. I'm not dating anymore. That's the problem. I understand what moms go through.
01:32Like babies, too. I have not had a date in almost two years. I feel like I got baby
01:37weight on me. I was like, I'm going to lose the weight after the baby. Oh, Kim, you
01:40didn't have a baby. It's still a good excuse. Okay. It's hard. It's hard because you've
01:45got to find a babysitter. I don't want to bring all these different men over to meet him or be in his life.
01:49So it's like, oh, I got to make choices. It's difficult. It really is difficult.
01:55I have not dated. Do you have someone I could date?
