Yolanda Sangweni talks with La La Anthony
Transcript
00:00Hi, Essence family. This is Yolanda Sanguini, entertainment editor at Essence.com.
00:08Welcome to Coffee Talk, your weekly dish of what's hot on Essence.com.
00:12This week we were lucky enough to catch up with Lala Anthony.
00:15She spoke to us about her big Broadway debut, acting, and keeping a tight circle of girlfriends.
00:21So check out what she had to say.
00:23So Lala, we see you everywhere these past couple of months.
00:26Tell me about, like, you're the girl about town. You're a favorite girl about town.
00:29Thank you. Thank you. You know, I try to keep it all together.
00:32I'm doing what women have been doing for years, balancing, you know, being a mom, having a career, being a wife.
00:38You know, it's not easy, but you figure out a way to make it work and definitely try to at least look good while I'm doing all these things.
00:45And you do.
00:46Thank you so much. Thank you.
00:48Another thing I wanted to ask you is you're in, you just finished rapping Think Like a Man.
00:53You're going to Broadway next month. And you also, I saw you were on the set of Let's Stay Together.
00:57So is this the acting, Lala, coming out more?
00:59Definitely. And, you know, that person has always been there.
01:02Just other opportunities came first, but acting is definitely my passion and what I'm trying to really transition into.
01:07And I think, you know, people seeing me and act like a lady would really show them that I'm serious about this.
01:12And the play, you know, you can't fake with theater.
01:14So definitely want to go on stage and invite people to come out and see, you know, my work and really start being considered in that other world as, you know, an actress along with the other things that I do.
01:25How are you prepping for your big Broadway debut?
01:28I spend a lot of time in acting class. I spend a lot of time with my acting coach. You know, I know that it's not something you take as a joke.
01:36It's serious and it needs to be, you know, taken that way. So I've spent a lot of hours and a lot of time preparing.
01:42And hopefully it'll come across when I'm on stage.
01:45Wonderful. Speaking of spending a lot of hours, your husband is currently in the lockout. And how are you guys getting to spend more time? Are you loving it at the moment?
01:53You know, it's the summer. So regardless of the lockout, he wouldn't be playing now anyway.
01:57So we do spend time together and, you know, he's just staying busy working out as if the season is still going to go on.
02:03And if it doesn't, you know, we'll explore other options, whether it's him going overseas or whatever it is.
02:08So we do enjoy spending time together, but he still trains as if he's going to be playing basketball in November when the season starts.
02:15So you never know what's going to happen. Lovely. And then we love your reality show.
02:19Thank you. So how do you guys watch it together? Are you home watching it?
02:23You know, I always am home watching it. I like to sit there and watch it.
02:26Sometimes I have little get togethers with my family. Mello watches it. We watch it together.
02:30And then every once in a while, you know, we're in separate places.
02:32But it's just awesome that the show is doing so well and people are gravitating to our lives.
02:37When it's your life, it doesn't seem as interesting as it might be to other people.
02:41So for people to support the show the way that they have is just amazing.
02:45Everything so far has just been great with the ratings and just the amount of people that are sitting in front of their television supporting us.
02:52It's just been great. Can you tell us about why it's important for you in Hollywood to keep a tight circle of girlfriends?
02:57Yeah, I mean, you need somebody that can understand what you go through and also people that keep you humble and down to earth.
03:02All of my friends are humble and we all support each other.
03:05And I think for other women, it's good to see a group of females that are successful and support each other.
03:11Because so much of this world is women not getting along and tearing each other down.
03:15And it doesn't really have to be that way.
03:17You should have a great group of girlfriends that you hang out with, you know, that's necessary as a woman.
03:22And you should have time away from your children or even your man to have that girl bonding time.
03:27And I have that with, you know, my group of friends, and I'm very, very grateful for that.
