Transcript
00:00Kori and I are laughing because Essence family is here.
00:03Yes.
00:04Our sister Kelly Rowland is here.
00:06And we just started talking like we were at home on the couch.
00:08Well, I mean, we're on the couch.
00:10We talking.
00:11We family.
00:11It's cool.
00:12We are.
00:12Welcome back.
00:14It's so good to be here.
00:15I think the last time I saw you was at our Black Women in Hollywood Awards where you hosted.
00:19Yes.
00:19I had so much fun.
00:21It was such a fun, funny afternoon because I will never forget Jennifer Lewis saying,
00:27Shut up.
00:28Who was she telling shut up to?
00:30Didn't she say shut the f*** out?
00:32Did she tell the f*** out?
00:33Yes.
00:34Yes.
00:34It was not censored.
00:36It was hysterical.
00:37That's a special room.
00:38It is a special room.
00:40And I always wish people could actually be there besides like seeing it, you know, down
00:44the lens.
00:44I just feel like what that room represents and what it feels like and what it means, like
00:50just from the first year that I went and the years, you know, to have passed.
00:54It's just so special.
00:55Oh, my gosh.
00:56It's so special.
00:56And you're working on something special right now.
00:59I am.
01:00A merry little Christmas.
01:01I am.
01:02With Lifetime.
01:02I am.
01:03A whole producer.
01:04Yes.
01:04With Hubby.
01:05Yes.
01:06Congratulations.
01:07We did it.
01:08It was so much fun.
01:09We had the family in town for Christmas two years ago now.
01:13Oh, that's right.
01:13This is inspired by a true story.
01:14This is a true story.
01:15It's inspired by a true story.
01:16Had the family in town two years ago into our new home, Christmas there.
01:20And I was like, it's going to be so special if we have our family come in.
01:23My husband's like, no, it's not.
01:25He's like, let's just wait.
01:26You know, have them here the next year.
01:28I was like, no, I want to do it.
01:29He's like, nope, not a good idea.
01:31I have them there anyway.
01:33They come in and one catastrophe at a time happens.
01:37And as I'm explaining it to a friend of mine, she's like, girl, you need to make this a movie.
01:42And then I go and have a conversation over with Tanya Lopez over at Lifetime.
01:46She says, you're going to make this a movie.
01:48You're going to do it here with us at Lifetime.
01:51And you're going to put it out next year.
01:52I was like, wait, what?
01:54And it literally happened within the snap of my fingers.
01:56But I'm so happy that as women, we're able to push each other into opportunities and moments like that.
02:05So I'm really grateful.
02:06Who's in the movie with you?
02:07It's myself, Bresha Webb, who is hysterical.
02:10I love her.
02:11She is so funny.
02:13Debbie Morgan plays my mother.
02:17Chris Shields, who is a Canadian actor, very talented.
02:21Thomas Cudrow.
02:23Just so many beautiful faces and talented people.
02:25How much of the movie is real that happened?
02:28Like exactly.
02:29Well, we had to change some things.
02:30I still want to be in good graces with my family.
02:32Exactly.
02:33They won't think that I absolutely just am disturbed by their presence.
02:37Because I love them.
02:39And they inspired this movie.
02:41Okay.
02:41So, yeah.
02:42These family holiday bloopers.
02:43Can we talk about it?
02:44Yeah.
02:45Because love my husband's parents.
02:47God, I'm going to get in trouble for this.
02:48But they cook, right?
02:50They cook.
02:50They cook.
02:51But they also burnt all our pans.
02:53Like, I mean, like, they cook.
02:54I guess, you know, he was like, that means the season is in it, babe.
02:57But, like, the food was amazing.
02:59But our pans have never been the same.
03:01Okay.
03:01So, you always have that moment with family, which you're like, you know, the kids.
03:05And did you have to wash it?
03:06Because, girl, the secret is two sets.
03:09Two sets.
03:10Come on.
03:11Yes.
03:11The secret is two sets.
03:13I have a much older version of my cookware and a newer version of my cookware.
03:19And I'm like, will you see?
03:21There you go.
03:22Yes.
03:22Don't have that happen again.
03:23Well, I've learned to hide the throw pillows and the good bedding.
03:27No, the kids and their little sticky fingers.
03:28I love the babies.
03:29Yes, true.
03:30But you can't stop them.
03:31No, you can't.
03:31And you can't stop them.
03:32As a matter of fact, my chairs that were once beige when we first moved in, they had,
03:37we baked cookies, of course, Christmas cookies.
03:39They had red and green dye from, like, you know, just, you know, decorating, redecorating
03:44my chairs with all the cookie icing.
03:46Yeah, it's done.
03:47See?
03:48I know you have some.
03:48Well, I was going to say, my confession is, my family doesn't let me cook.
03:52Word?
03:52They don't let me.
03:54Do you like to?
03:55Are you challenged in the cooking department?
03:56I'm maybe a little challenged.
03:58Okay, I'm going to need you to learn a dish this year.
04:01I do cook some greens, but they still won't let me do it.
04:03Well, greens are hard, so congrats.
04:04Greens are hard, yes.
04:06That's like an eight-hour dish.
04:07But they're just going to dust your shoulder off of that one.
04:09Greens, she said greens.
04:11But I'm old enough.
04:13You got to soak them.
04:14It's time.
04:15Oh, yeah.
04:15You got to soak them.
04:16You got to soak the green.
04:17Oh, yes.
04:17And they need time to just get that.
04:19I'll be honest, I don't soak them.
04:20Okay, your family don't let you cook.
04:23You got really quiet in this room.
04:25Everybody was like, the collective guy.
04:28I know.
04:28I'm like.
04:28But soaking?
04:30Okay, I'm really funny over here.
04:31Y'all know I don't cook.
04:32But I'm really over here shaming Corey.
04:33But I can eat and set a table really well.
04:36Okay, we all have our strengths.
04:38What are your holiday strengths, Kelly?
04:39I actually watched my mom thoroughly as she cooked greens.
04:43So my greens are pretty good.
04:44Your greens are pretty good.
04:45All right, ham hock or turkey wings.
04:46Turkey wings.
04:47And sometimes you can use liquid smoke.
04:50Someone keeps telling me about this and I go searching for it and I can't find it.
04:53Where do you get that from?
04:53Oh, no, it's easy.
04:54Like any grocery store.
04:56Any liquid smoke.
04:57For sure.
04:57Liquid smoke.
04:58All right, one more thing.
04:59Just to be.
04:59How much water do you use?
05:03It's just a little.
05:07I don't know how to like measure.
05:09Two-thirds of pot?
05:10Yeah, I mean, because they're going to cook down.
05:13You don't want them.
05:13You know what I mean?
05:14And I like to put like that goodness in there.
05:17Like before you start, you actually, you know, season you some peppers and some onions and, you know.
05:23Save me some, Kelly.
05:24Save me some.
05:25I will come to L.A.
05:26Wait, after the Mary Little movie comes up, are your recipes going to come up?
05:29No.
05:30No?
05:30Okay.
05:31No, no.
05:31But you did also work on the music.
05:33I did.
05:34I did.
05:34I did a song for the movie.
05:35Big shout out to Angela Beyonce, Nash and Shane.
05:39They wrote this beautiful song and I love singing it.
05:43Absolutely love singing it.
05:44It's called Love You More Christmas Time.
05:45Do you perform it in the movie?
05:47No, no.
05:48I didn't sing in this movie.
05:50Why not?
05:50I figured I would just sit back and, you know, just try to brush up on my acting chops.
05:55It was so much fun.
05:56Is it hard to produce something that you're in?
05:57That was fun and challenging, I will say, because I took that role very seriously.
06:04I was at every production meeting.
06:06I made sure, like, we were, like, being very cognizant of what was, like, coming and happening
06:11on sets and the costumes, everything.
06:14I had so much fun.
06:16And you see why when people love what they do and they get excited about, like, a new opportunity,
06:22like, I want to do this again.
06:23I'm that person.
06:24I want to do it again.
06:25Did you tap in anybody in your circle to help you, like, learn?
06:28Or who did you go to for advice on how to do things?
06:33Actually, a girlfriend of mine, Shayla.
06:37She's over at Will Packer Productions.
06:40But, yeah, I talked to her about it and she would give me such really, really great advice.
06:45So tell me about working with your husband because you both worked on this together.
06:48Yes.
06:48Tell me what that's like, kind of mixing business with pleasure.
06:51It must be fun but also challenging.
06:52I know I'm married, too.
06:54Look.
06:54It's definitely fun.
06:57It's definitely fun.
06:58I think the challenging part was when we just, you know, didn't agree on something.
07:03And sometimes we agreed to disagree and sometimes we agreed and those were nice moments, too.
07:08So, yeah, you know.
07:09Because you're creating together.
07:10Exactly.
07:11And he's like, I don't know if that's a good idea.
07:13And I'm like, I think it's a great idea.
07:15I feel strongly about that.
07:16Yes, exactly.
07:17How do you feel about your casting of him in the film?
07:20Oh, the guy is a little taller.
07:23Okay.
07:23You know, Tim is a great man.
07:27My honey.
07:28Now, how are you doing everything, sis?
07:30I don't know.
07:31Because you are really, she is giving me happy, wonderful wife, mom, superstar.
07:37No, I will say.
07:38You always got something up your sleeve.
07:39And then you'll come out with a single.
07:41Okay, like here's the music to bless you for the holidays and another project.
07:45You look fabulous.
07:46You know what?
07:47It takes a nice support system.
07:51I'm here because of a really great support system and a great team.
07:56And I'm just grateful.
07:59And I know where I see myself.
08:01I know where I want to be.
08:03Um, and when the days are tough, then I take those tough days and I still count those as
08:08my great days and my blessed days because obviously I'm not done and I keep going.
08:13Do you have a mantra or like something that you tell yourself when it's like, Ooh, I'm
08:17juggling a lot.
08:17Um, we make time for the things that we want to make time for.
08:22Yeah.
08:23So these things that I'm making time for right now, they really require my energy, my attention.
08:29Um, but it's, I'm still learning balance because like my son just, I actually missed his first,
08:37uh, singing in a school play.
08:39So I missed it.
08:40What did he sing?
08:41I don't know.
08:43I think he rocked it.
08:44But he, like, they sang this little Thanksgiving song, but it's like, you know what I mean?
08:50I wanted to be there, but his father's there.
08:52Yeah.
08:52So you know what I mean?
08:53Like if one of us can't be there, the other one is there.
08:55We're, we're doing this.
08:56You tied him in.
08:57Yeah.
08:57Yeah.
08:58We tag your it.
08:59Let's go.
09:00I've had that.
09:01Um, I remember I had to be down at the American Black Film Festival.
09:04I miss my daughter doing her first solo at a talent show.
09:07So I literally cry because, you know, they send you the video and, um, my daughter's
09:11a little different than your son because she quickly will bring it up even to this day.
09:14She's like, well, you missed that.
09:15And I'm like, she's nine.
09:18She's going on 10.
09:20I thought you were going to say like 15.
09:23No.
09:24You like, she's nine.
09:26And this happened two years ago.
09:27So she still brings it up.
09:29So, but, but, but real talk, what I love about it is I kind of let her know that I don't
09:35have to physically be there, but I'm still there cheering for her.
09:37And I think it was something she, I have to tell her like, cause mommy, I always say
09:41here now, like mommy's not going to always be there.
09:43I don't mean to be like morbid, but I'm like, I'm not going to always be there, but I want
09:46you to know I'm cheering for you.
09:48I love you.
09:49And it's really, sometimes you kind of have to miss those things to kind of strengthen
09:52them up a bit.
09:53I think, I think, I think, I think that it, in these interesting ways, they become really
09:59well-rounded and very independent.
10:02And I think that, you know, we're raising young humans, you know what I mean?
10:06They have to carve their own path and make their own direction.
10:09And, and I just think that it's so important that they, they do have those moments just
10:14as much as we're there, because when we are there, they don't take advantage of those
10:17moments.
10:17No.
10:18And they're just like, take a picture.
10:19This one over here.
10:21Titan is like, you know, he's having his, his moments where he's definitely feeling himself.
10:26He's five and he just makes me so nervous.
10:30He's so handsome and just a smart kid.
10:33He's such a cutie pie.
10:35So, no, I was going to say, because it's a movie about Christmas and it's Christmas time
10:39coming up, what would have been some of your favorite Christmas moments in your personal
10:42life?
10:43My personal life?
10:45I mean, clearly this movie is a snippet of.
10:47Definitely.
10:48Um, I, I'll say, um, I remember being actually Titan's age and I got a red rocking chair from
10:57one of my great aunts and I know it sounds really whack, but it was because they were
11:03in rocking chairs.
11:05I wanted a rocking chair and I sat in the rocking chairs, like in the lineup with them.
11:10And I'll never forget us just like drinking hot cocoa on their porch.
11:14And that's just a really warm, nice feeling to me.
11:17That's so sweet.
11:18That's beautiful.
11:18I got a good visual just now.
11:20That's so cute.
11:21Yeah.
11:21So that's a really good memory for me.
11:23Kelly, you know what I always wanted to ask you?
11:25You have been successful for so long and you, your star just keeps rising and you've mastered
11:31that longevity, but you're also so humble.
11:34You haven't changed from the moment I first met you, Corey, like you are the same person.
11:38Same.
11:38How do you stay Kelly, but also just stay focused on keeping your, you know, your finger on that
11:43pulse?
11:43I feel like within the blink of an eye, it can be taken away from you.
11:48The opportunity, the moment, good people.
11:53And I don't take advantage of it.
11:55So every day, like I'm just grateful, truly grateful.
11:58Before you came up, we were, you know, we were doing our research, but then we started
12:03going down a Destiny's Child rabbit hole of songs.
12:05So good.
12:06And I had a confession because we, you know, and especially now they're doing all these
12:09roundups of like best of the decade.
12:12But I was like, Destiny's Child really owned the aughts like 2000 to 2010.
12:16And I was saying like, I was a little bit older when Destiny's Child came out.
12:20And I remember being embarrassed going to Tower Records to buy it because I was, you know,
12:24I was older and I was like, I'm just going to buy this.
12:27And the guy was like, why are you being all shy?
12:29Because I was like, I really loved them.
12:30And I feel conflicted.
12:30You felt too old today?
12:32I felt too old because I think I was, I may have been like either late 20s or 30s, like
12:37singing Bugaboo and like say my name and being really, being really happy about it.
12:41You and everyone else.
12:42By the way, you had a Bugaboo, you had to think about it.
12:45That's the thing.
12:46That's the thing.
12:47We just gave you a scenario and you had to think about it.
12:50Great job.
12:51We were like trying to decide on our favorites.
12:54We, it's impossible.
12:55Like we were talking about how each track, a different part of your life, the Bugaboo,
13:00your catered to you moment when you found bae.
13:03You know what I mean?
13:03We were doing the breath song, Lose My Breath.
13:06Like, come on, that's the part.
13:07That is just, see, see, iconic.
13:12You know, but you've given us so much as both a group artist and a solo artist.
13:16But what's next?
13:17What's next?
13:18Because you're making movies.
13:19I mean, I definitely want to make more movies.
13:21More movies.
13:22Okay.
13:22I definitely want to.
13:24Do you want to produce more?
13:26Oh, for sure.
13:27And star?
13:28For sure.
13:28Because you're natural.
13:29Yeah.
13:30I mean, I don't know if I do both at the same time.
13:33No, it was fun.
13:34It's okay.
13:36But I think, yeah, definitely more movies.
13:38Definitely more music coming up next year.
13:41And what else?
13:42I have a lot of things that's on my goals list.
13:45Okay.
13:46It's at least like seven things that I'm like looking at.
13:49Keep us on our toes, Kelly.
13:50Keep us on our toes.
13:51She said seven things.
13:52I'm trying to get two things that's in it.
13:53Is it just for 2020 or just like some things to set up in 2020 to help create generational
14:02wealth for myself and my son?
14:05Yes.
14:05Speak on it.
14:06And opportunities to create for more women and women of color.
14:13And also just more stories to tell.
14:15I feel like there's so many stories to tell, you know?
14:18Especially our stories.
14:20Our stories.
14:20Right?
14:20Black women?
14:21Yes.
14:21Yes.
14:22Yes.
14:22Since you've done this project, have you looked at other stories to see that some things
14:26that you would just produce?
14:28Yes.
14:28Okay, you have.
14:28Yes, absolutely.
14:30And had different conversations with women and laughed with women.
14:33The other day I was in an interview and we were literally like, not an interview, sorry.
14:37We were just having a conversation.
14:39I was like, guys, you just helped me write a movie.
14:40Thank you so much.
14:42I'm going to leave you be.
14:43Yes.
14:44And go pitch this.
14:45Write this idea down and pitch this somewhere.
14:47Because I just feel like we're rich of stories.
14:50Yeah.
14:50You know what I mean?
14:51Yeah.
14:51And so many people that actually need to hear other people's stories so that they can be
14:55inspired or just encouraged.
14:58Yes.
14:59You know what I mean?
14:59And feel normal.
15:00These are our stories.
15:01Yes.
15:02And they're finally getting the light and the treatment and the shine that they deserve.
15:05Absolutely.
15:06In Hollywood.
15:07Okay.
15:07Absolutely.
15:08Absolutely.
15:09And this Bob, who is responsible?
15:11This whole outfit.
15:12Can we just get a moment?
15:14Bob by Neil Farina.
15:16Who has a shop in Brooklyn, right?
15:17Yes.
15:18I literally pass it all the time.
15:20It's awesome.
15:21Yes, it is.
15:22It's awesome.
15:22And styled by Colin Carter.
15:24Okay.
15:24Yeah.
15:25You know, I don't know why I've done Google this.
15:27Don't laugh at me.
15:27I'm a Bob girl usually.
15:29Yes.
15:29And if you Google like Kelly Rowland hairstyles, like it auto-fills Kelly Rowland Bob.
15:34Are you serious?
15:35Yes.
15:35Because, you know, it knows what the people want.
15:37You wear a Bob.
15:38This is beautiful.
15:39Go please try it.
15:40I like my Bob.
15:41You have an iconic Bob.
15:41We're going to, we're going to, we're going to, I like this little like Bob, Bob, like
15:45moment at the bottom.
15:47Yes.
15:48Yeah.
15:48And oh my gosh.
15:49And I have to say, have you guys tried, um, Tracy Ellis Ross's products?
15:55No.
15:56And that presentation.
15:57I'm a little mad actually.
15:58Why?
15:59Cause Julie could have shared some.
16:00I know she, she gets stuff all the time.
16:03By the way, she doesn't, she, I'm not being paid to say anything.
16:07But when I tell you, these products will change your life.
16:11I've heard amazing things.
16:11They change your life.
16:13They are amazing.
16:14She worked her butt off for 10 years and I just found, found it just so incredible.
16:19After I just like so nicely combed through my hair from the shower.
16:23It's, it felt like baby hair.
16:25It really felt like baby hair.
16:26Like she showed her hair before and then I guess she used the wash and the deep conditioner.
16:32And her curl pattern.
16:33Oh my God.
16:34My curl pattern was cute.
16:36It was so cute.
16:38Okay guys, that's what I want my stocking.
16:40Yes.
16:40That and make sure you see Queen and Slim.
16:44Look at you.
16:45Okay, can we just talk about you sharing all this, don't you love her?
16:48No, I'm just saying.
16:48I thought you were going to say see Queen and Slim.
16:49Have y'all seen Queen and Slim a little Christmas?
16:50No, we see Queen and Slim.
16:51No, no, no.
16:51We, I mean, we, we talked about that.
16:53Oh, that's right.
16:54A Houston girl.
16:54Okay.
16:55Yes.
16:56I mean, it's, oh, there's so many different things.
16:59First of all, after I saw the movie, um, it was a screening in LA and I was so beside
17:05myself at the end and Lino's, uh, standing there and I just ran into her arms and just
17:11hugged her and cried.
17:12It was so incredible the story and how it's told and Melina directed the hell out of it.
17:19I'm so proud of her.
17:21Um, it's just beautiful.
17:23And I feel like when we are supporting each other and lifting each other up, they know
17:30how important our dollar is and they see us support each other.
17:34So I'm really encouraging everyone to go out and make sure that they spend their money
17:39on a movie ticket to go see Queen and Slim.
17:43It is so worth your watch.
17:45I, when I watch it, I keep telling people that visually is nothing else like that.
17:50Nothing else like that.
17:50It is so beautiful.
17:52And, uh, and I, I always talk about the pack when, um, and I'm not getting anything away,
17:56but when Jodi, the queen, when she has to cut her locks out because they're still on
18:00the run and when she comes into frame, uh, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
18:04this walk that she has, it's like, I'll fly.
18:06Yes.
18:07It's just, it's just her walk just is so epic.
18:10And I realize you don't see that kind of beauty like that often.
18:14I mean, she's got the short hair, skin tone, all of it.
18:16And it's just, it just, it was, it was breathtaking.
18:19Imagery is everything.
18:20Imagery.
18:20Oh, she makes, she made me want to cut my hair.
18:23I'm not ready yet.
18:24No, cause this is cute.
18:25This is super cute.
18:26Just give me a moment with this.
18:27But yes, also go see, of course, I'm not going to see, but go see Merry Little Christmas.
