On this week's episode: We chat with Regina King about her role on hit show The Leftovers, we step into the Steam Room with Being Mary Jane star Thomas Q Jones, Christina Milian dishes on the inspiration behind her new music and more! #ESSENCELive
Transcript
00:00Today on Essence Live, Emmy-winning actress and star of HBO's The Leftover's Regina
00:07King stops by. Plus, a Being Mary Jane hottie hits the steam room. Ladies, you can thank
00:13me a little bit later. And of course, my favorite part of each and every show, Slater Shade
00:17takes on a white singer who thinks he might be black. But now? The December issue of Essence
00:24magazine is on newsstands now, and Naomi Harris is looking fierce. And her first Essence
00:29cover the James Bond beauty talks breaking into Hollywood, growing up in London, and her
00:34love life. Her latest film, Spectre, hits theaters Friday.
00:38Um, don't come for President Obama unless he sends for you. While speaking at a fundraising
00:44event in New York, POTUS shot back at GOP claims that he's weak on foreign relations.
00:50Every one of these candidates say, uh, you know, Obama's weak. He's, you know, Putin's
00:57kicking sand in his face. When I talk to Putin, uh, he's gonna straighten out. Just looking
01:06at him, I'm gonna, he's gonna be. And then, it turns out, they can't handle a bunch of CNBC
01:15moderators.
01:17Hillary Clinton met with the mothers of slain teens Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, and Jordan
01:24Davis in a private meeting in Chicago this week. The goal? To discuss criminal justice reform and
01:29how to repair the mistrust between law enforcement and minority communities. But in light of Sandra
01:34Bland, that McKinney, Texas pool party gone wrong, and now the Spring Valley High student who was
01:39brutally assaulted by an officer for disturbing school? Should black women and girls take special
01:44precautions when encountering police too? Essence Live starts now.
02:00Welcome to Essence Live. We want to hear from you. Use the hashtag Essence Live to share your
02:05thoughts on today's topics, ask our celebrity guests some questions, or just let us know what
02:09you'd like to see in an upcoming show. As I mentioned earlier, the topic of police brutality has focused
02:14heavily on black men and boys. But here at Essence, we know that the issue hits home for women too.
02:19So, we hit the streets of New York City to find out how black women are coping and what, if anything,
02:24we can do to prepare our young girls.
02:32My initial reaction was shock.
02:34Well, I just felt like it was very outrageous, like blatantly, how aggressive the police officer was.
02:40And it really broke my heart. I have family in South Carolina. It just, it just excited me.
02:45I'm accustomed to students misbehaving in class, but when I saw that, I thought that the adult in
02:49charge really did not take charge of that situation. School is supposed to be somewhere where you feel
02:54safe. You're not supposed to be attacked so viciously. Well, what was she doing to deserve that,
03:00and what were they doing? And sometimes there's really nothing you can do to avoid those types of
03:05situations. No matter what the child was doing, it should have not gotten to the extent of the violence
03:09that I saw in the video. He literally threw her across the room. I don't feel like you should
03:14have put your hands on a female like that, especially a young female. She's not even an adult,
03:19and you're a grown man. I mean, as black people, we're constantly going to be hassled by the police,
03:23but I've never, to be honest, seen something like that in person in my life, and I wouldn't even know
03:27how to react. Nowadays, considering like the whole police brutality issues, I feel like, you know,
03:32just do what you have to do, but I also know your rights. In order to deal with children,
03:38African-American children, you have to use violence. No, this message just continues over
03:42and over again. This has to stop. More than his job should have been taken, I feel like he should
03:46have been in jail. It's disgusting, it's appalling, and I'm disappointed in the police officer that took
03:50that action. People have very little respect for black women, and so I felt like that kind of
03:56reiterated that feeling and that point, you know. Thank you so much, everyone who shared your opinion,
04:02and you can sound up, of course, anytime using the hashtag Essence Live. Joining me now in studio
04:07is the beautiful and talented Regina King. Hi. Hey. Welcome back. I'm so excited you're here.
04:13I'm so excited to be here. I'm so excited that you are here and thriving and all of that,
04:18because the last time I saw you, it was a new beginning for you. It was, and you gave me some
04:22fabulous words of encouragement. You have no idea what they meant to me, so I'm just like,
04:25fanning out. You're just a regular, you know, regular here. Yeah, flip the hair. Well, thank
04:31you. Well, thank you very much. Yeah. But some things have happened for you since you were here
04:36last time. Congratulations on your Emmy. Thank you. Thank you very much. What was that moment like
04:40for you? It was, it was awesome. I mean, the whole entire night, I feel like everyone was as happy for
04:49me as I was for myself. So it was a constant, nonstop celebration every step of the night.
04:56And in your speech, you thanked your son. And we just watched a piece on police brutality. Have
05:02you had any conversation with your son on police brutality and maybe how to handle those difficult
05:06situations? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, that kind of comes with the territory, especially when you have
05:12a son, a black son. But the unfortunate thing now is that those conversations are extending to our
05:22daughters. And it's just kind of unfortunate that those same concerns that parents were having when
05:30I was a kid and probably before that, before that, it's still the same conversation now. And we have
05:35camera phones and we have all of this and we are seeing it live and direct and something's got to
05:43happen. Definitely. I understand. But we're going to change to a lighter note. Yes, we will. We'll
05:49talk about, we will continue to talk about that. We will continue to have that conversation. We will
05:52continue to have that conversation. But now I'd like to talk about The Leftovers season two.
05:56Congratulations on joining that cast. Thank you. Now, it moved from season one, it was upstate New
06:00York. Yes. Now it's in Miracle. Miracle in Jarden, Texas. Miracle Jarden, Texas. Jarden, Texas, y'all.
06:07So can you tell me about your role as Erica Humphrey? I play Erica Murphy. Oh, excuse me,
06:11Murphy. I apologize. No, it's okay. So for those that aren't familiar with season one, season one,
06:17this departure happened where two percent of the world's population disappeared. And we meet this
06:25family or the people in Mapleton, New Jersey and see how that affects them. And we pick up two years
06:34after season one in a town where no one disappeared. This is the only place in the entire world where no
06:40one disappeared. And that's where my family lives, the Murphys. And we are a family that looks picture
06:47perfect. But when you look up close, you see fractures all in that crack, all in that picture.
06:52All up in that picture. Let's take a quick look. People throwing rocks through our window. You think
06:58it's because of what I do? That man that you beat the out of this morning, he thinks it's because he
07:10was selling our water. No, he was selling lies. Then why'd you take his palm print? Because I seem to
07:17recall there being one left on the car that our daughter disappeared from.
07:28Let's just call this what it is. What is it? You need to hit people because you need to hit people.
07:36You better hold him accountable. Man, you are not backing down. I know. Was there any hesitation about
07:42taking on two roles such as Aaliyah from American Crime and Erica back to back? Because these are two
07:48very strong, heavy hit roles back to back. Right. No hesitation whatsoever. I love shows that are dark,
07:57that are provocative, and Leftovers fell right in that category. Definitely falls right into that.
08:04So no, there was not a hesitation at all. Will we see you return to do any more animation? Like,
08:10of course, we talked about the boondocks before, but such as the boondocks or comedy. Are we going to see
08:15you go back to those genres? I'm sure. I mean, there has not been the time for that right now,
08:21but I would love to. Animation is so much fun because you don't have to go through hair and makeup,
08:27you don't have 5 a.m. calls, and you really get a chance to really be someone else. So yeah, I would
08:38love to do it again. We're going to right now take a quick video call. We have a video question from
08:42our Essence family. Let's take a look. This is Arielle from New York City. I was wondering,
08:48being a voice on the boondocks, did you ever have any reservations about the show's content or using
08:53the n-word on the show? Oh, that's a very good question. Yeah. I mean, I feel like that, you know,
08:58the the conversation of the n-word is one of those that it's I don't think it's gonna die. Right.
09:06You know, it's a way the generations express themselves. I understand people who have
09:15really strong reactions to it. I totally get it both ways. No, I didn't. I think Erin Magruder is
09:22very smart. I think he uses his voice to tell social commentary in a very clever way. I feel like
09:32you can get a message across much stronger through comedy than you can being really heavy-handed with
09:42the drama. Making people think. Yeah, exactly. So no, there was no hesitation because of the subject
09:48matter. And you're doing a lot more directing now behind the lens. Would you ever consider creating
09:53your own show a la Shonda Rhimes, putting together your own franchise, your own series? Absolutely.
09:58Absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, that's, you know, watch out. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Would it be a comedy?
10:05Would it be a drama? Like, well, might be a little bit of both. A little just. Yeah. You heard it here
10:11first on Essence Live. So in honor of it being Thursday, we also have a throwback Thursday question
10:17for you, this time from a viewer. Hi, caller. Are you on the line? Yes. Hi. What's your name and where
10:24are you from? Hi. My name is Laquisha and I'm from Oklahoma City and I'm really excited to be on the call.
10:30So thank you for joining us. Hi, Regina. Hi. What's your question for Regina?
10:36Okay. So my question is, I've been watching you since you're on 227 and I wanted to know
10:41if you still keep in touch with the guy who played Calvin, your character's crush.
10:46Where's Calvin? Where's Calvin? Oh, where is he?
10:48You know, I don't talk to him regularly. I haven't spoken with him actually in a few years. And he sent me
10:57the loveliest message and a bouquet of flowers to Austin after I won the Emmy and just really a
11:05wonderful message. Just how proud he was and, you know, telling me I'm a superstar and I'm a queen
11:12and all of those wonderful things that ladies, we love to hear. Of course, of course. But yeah,
11:16he's always, I've, I've, I've, I pretty much have stayed in touch with most of the cast
11:21just over the years, you know, sometimes a few years go by without talking to, um, some people,
11:28but, um, he just recently reached out. I could imagine after working day in and day out, you
11:34develop like a close family-like relationship with your cast. Oh yeah. You, you, you have all these
11:38little families along the way. Yeah. Are you ready to play a little game with us? Sure. Games are fun.
11:44Okay. All right. So this particular game, because you are a king, Regina King,
11:48um, we're going to read some quotes and you have to tell me if the quote is a quote from you, a king,
11:53or if the quote is from a queen. And by queen, we mean famous, very fabulous men who are self-proclaimed
11:58queen. Okay. Are you ready? All right. I'm ready. Let's go. All right. Okay. So the first one is,
12:03you better give me grace, honey. Is that king or queen? Oh, that's definitely a queen.
12:08She's like, that is not me. And that's from Miss Lawrence. Oh, okay. Sway in the morning in 2013.
12:14Okay. So our second quote, where are all the men?
12:21That's probably a queen. Or did I say that in a movie or something? That was you.
12:26On the real earlier this year. On the real. Oh, wow. Okay. So these are real life things that I've
12:31asked myself that question every weekend though. Where are men? Where are you at? I don't know.
12:36They're not calling me. Oh goodness. All right. Let me wait. Let me get focused.
12:39Get focused. Because I can't miss any of more of the things that I said. Okay. Let's go.
12:43Number three. You've got to make a way for yourself. Can't nobody do you the way you do you?
12:51The way you said it just sounds like a queen, but maybe I said it. I order my food like that at the
12:56Chinese food stop, my Starbucks. I mean, that's just like me. So you can't pay attention to my
13:00reflection. Okay. Did I say that? No, I didn't. Nope. Ru Paul.
13:05All right. See, I can see. Ru and I, yeah, we think alike in a lot of ways. That's why I got
13:11confused. I do that at Starbucks. I'm like, I don't have a double frappuccino pumpkin spice
13:15lot. Like, I'm into it. And what is the person that you're ordering from?
13:18Are they going like this? They look at me like, I see you every day. You don't have to do that.
13:21That's what they look at. It's okay. It's okay. They probably look forward to it.
13:24I just get excited. All right. So here's our last one. I've always been honest to my own truth.
13:32That's me. That's you. That's where our Black Women in Hollywood event a little bit earlier
13:36this year. So thank you so very much for stopping by. Thank you.
13:38For always just being such a great light in this space. Thank you.
13:41We greatly appreciate everything that you do for us here at Essence Live and for all the young
13:46women out there who are watching you. I appreciate Essence Live. I wouldn't be Essence. I wouldn't be
13:50feeling myself like I do if there wasn't an Essence always on the table in my house.
13:55Thank you so very much. Please be sure to catch Regina King at The Leftovers,
13:59not at The Leftovers, excuse me, on The Leftovers on HBO. Later on,
14:03we have Christina Milian on her new music. Is she talking about Lil Wayne?
14:06But up next, Being Mary Jane's Cuddy Buddy will hit the steam room. Stay tuned for more Essence Live.
14:20Welcome back to Essence Live. Joining me now in studio, a little bit of a troublemaker,
14:48but you may know him as iCandy, former NFL star and actor Thomas Jones. How are you?
14:53I'm great. Thanks for having me. Thank you for coming in and causing such chaos in the Essence Live
14:57studio. Hey, look, that's what I do. I see that. You're stirring up quite a bit on Being Mary Jane.
15:03You're the Cuddy Buddy, if you will, that Mary Jane just can't stop having sex with. So,
15:09how or what do you do to get into character for all of those scenes? I just think about the audience and
15:14the viewers and, I mean, they're watching this. So, it's not about me. It's not about
15:22my comfort level or discomfort level. It's about the audience and the viewers. And I want to make
15:26sure that when they watch the show, this is a great show. It's Gabrielle Union's show. It's
15:31Mara Brockett Kill's show. Right. I want them to believe every scene.
15:35Your ex-teammates, they call you up like, Thomas, really? That last scene last week? Like, really?
15:39They give you a hard time? People hit me on social media and I think a lot of people are shocked
15:45because as a football player, I really wasn't that much in the public eye. I was very low-key.
15:52I didn't really interact that much with the media and I didn't really interact that much with my
15:56teammates outside of the locker room. I was always pretty much by myself. So, for them to see me in
16:02this way, it's almost like a totally different person. Thomas Jones is a football player and then I
16:07added my middle initial, Thomas Q Jones, to my actor name because I wanted to literally
16:12transform and become this actor. And differentiate. Yeah. And I think for them to see me, especially
16:17during those scenes at first, they were probably like, is this the same guy? So, very, very fortunate.
16:24So, this past week you got caught in the act. Do you know what I mean when I say in the act?
16:30Or the action, as my little card here says. So, in real life, have you ever been busted while having sex?
16:37In the act? Oh, okay. Way to catch up with you, Thomas.
16:42The light bulb finally came on. There was a dimmer. There was a dimmer on the light.
16:44You know what happened in this week's episode. Don't play these games with Essence Live.
16:48You know what happened. Have I ever been caught in the act? Um, yeah. I was home with one of my
16:56girlfriends from a while, years back. And I was at my, my parents' house. Why is your voice dropping?
17:04We need to be able to hear you on Essence Live. Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry. Yes, yes. Please share the story.
17:06Please share the story. Oh, and my, my mother is, is like, she's almost like a burglar in her own
17:11house because she never goes to sleep. And she's always up doing laundry and stuff. And it was like,
17:16four a.m. And I'm like, I don't know if she's asleep. And my girlfriend's like,
17:20I don't know if it's your mom's house. She's dancing. I'm like, don't worry if she's asleep.
17:24So, you know, whatever. Uh, ah. And now your mom's traumatized.
17:30I'm like, yo, it's like, oh God, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. And I'm like, no,
17:34we were just talking. We were just talking. Like it was totally different conversation.
17:38Yeah, it was totally different conversation. Totally different. So now we're going to change
17:40the conversation. Are you ready to step into the steam room?
17:46All right, Essence Live. We have now officially stepped into the steam room. Thomas, are you ready?
17:52Oh, man. I see that you've changed clothes. Yeah, I changed. I had.
17:54I mean, you're looking good. You're cute. All right. Okay. Thank you. I had to get comfortable.
17:58All right. So you ready for the first question? Yeah, let's go. All right. And you have to be honest.
18:03Okay. No holding back. Okay.
18:06Okay. What's the last thing you dreamed about?
18:12The last thing I dreamed about? That you can tell us about? Because you're taking a little
18:20bit of a while there, Thomas. The last thing I dreamed about was
18:28an audition that I have coming up on Thursday. And I dreamed that I booked a role.
18:35Okay. What's something sexy you would whisper into a woman's ear?
18:44Come here. Okay. That's that Barry White. Come here.
18:48You know what I'm talking about. Yeah. All right.
18:50All right. Which part of a woman's body most turns you on?
18:55It would have to be a tie between legs and eyes.
19:17And notice when we ask steam room questions, your voice has like dropped tremendously.
19:23I'm relaxed. I'm in the steam room.
19:26Okay. So Mary Jane and Cuddy Buddy like to get down anywhere. Kitchens, pools, etc.
19:33What's your personal favorite place to have sex?
19:43My personal favorite place to have sex?
19:46Thomas. The couch. Why?
19:54Because the way you're positioned on the couch means you have to move around, which means you
20:04probably end up in different positions. Thomas, can you let our viewers see your famous six-pack?
20:12You can go ahead and you can flex. Wink.
20:18Okay.
20:21There you go.
20:22Oh, I'm in the steam room.
20:24Can you work it?
20:40Yeah.
20:44Thank you for being a good sport, Thomas. Don't go anywhere, Essence Live. We have Christina
20:49Millian coming up. She stopped by the studio to talk about her new EP and her reality show.
20:54Do you think her new songs are about that? Her ex-boo, Weezy F Baby or not? Let's take a look.
21:05I think you're hearing, I mean, just like an updated new sound of my new music. I mean,
21:10I have a four-song EP that I'm dropping called For You. It's four songs, four music videos for my fans,
21:16but it's kind of like also an orange letter for the gentleman that it was all about and just what
21:21was happening in my life at the time. Do It is featuring Lil Wayne. I guess, I suppose it's just
21:28a different sound, but it's just a different time. Rebel, everybody's heard Rebel. Rebel is just about
21:33that chemistry that's just fiery. It's new. It's just going and it happens. And then I've got records
21:38like the song called Liar and it's, girls are going to feel this one, you know? Guys have a tendency
21:44to do stuff like live, but sometimes, you know, as women are like, you know, your heart is so
21:49wrapped up in the moment of what I was feeling, whether it had to do with my relationships or it
21:54had to do with, um, or relationship at that time, um, or had to do with, um, just like being a confident,
22:01sexy, like go-getting, like a, a woman that's like a go-getter, you know? So I think
22:07a lot of women can relate to that these days. Christina Milian is back. Gotta do it my way.
22:12And her life's more turned up than ever. I got chills at the end. If you like crazy,
22:16you'll love Emilian. Let's just keep her real. Christina Milian turned up.
22:20Um, my sisters and I were actually like super into the idea. We watch reality TV,
22:26you know, on our downtime. Um, so does my mom. And I think that was the reason why she had so much
22:31apprehension. She's heard all the rumors of like, oh, it could jinx our family to,
22:36oh, we're going to let the skeletons out of the closet. I'm like, mom, what skeletons do we have in
22:40the closet? Like, first off, my life is always on display. People are always like, it's all,
22:45like all my business is usually out there. And if it's not my real business, it's something that
22:50people have like made up stuff about my life. Why don't we just live our lives and, and let people
22:56see what the real deal is. Cause at the end of the day, I'm not embarrassed by my life. To me,
22:59we're a great example of a family that rides together, that's passionate. We go through ups and
23:04downs. We've been through it all. And, um, I think we're relatable. So we really just like,
23:09there's nothing that we, we hid from the cameras. It was just, this is our lives. This is us.
23:13Now we're used to it. And, um, it's definitely a turned up season. So, you know, it's going to be juicy.
23:22That's fine. Cause I love the way of staring at it. Stand out by design.
23:52Welcome back to essence live. That was a good steam room. Wasn't it?
24:18Today's show has been jam packed. It's hard to believe we have more room,
24:22but of course we do. It's time for Slade or Shade. Let's find out who's joining us today.
24:28Joining us for the first time from beats one on Apple music. Welcome low key.
24:32Thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me.
24:34Are you ready to throw some shade? Yeah, let's get it going.
24:36Ready to get it going? All right, let's get it going.
24:39Another Slade or Shade newbie writer and comedian, Von DiCarlo. How are you?
24:42I'm great. How are you? I'm fabulous. Thank you for joining us on essence.
24:45Thank you for having me. And bringing some zhuzh to this panel. You're so crazy.
24:48There we go. Welcome, welcome. And of course, Slade or Shade troublemaker,
24:53Tony Anderson is back. Hi, Tony. Hey, Dana. How are you? How you doing?
24:58I'm fabulous. All right. So at home panelists,
25:02please use hashtag essence live and let us know what you're thinking. So let's get started.
25:06Singer Tom Jones is seeking a DNA test to determine if he has any African ancestry.
25:11His inquiry into his lineage is twofold. One, out of his own curiosity. And two,
25:16longstanding speculation by fans. Jones has said he was often mistaken for being black,
25:21partly because of his baritone voice and thick black curly hair. Apparently that's all you need
25:25these days. All right. So what say you? Slade or Shade? One, two, three. Shade, Slade. Okay. All right,
25:33low key, let's start with you. Why a shade? Why wait this long to figure out if you're black?
25:38Well, I don't understand that. And then I feel like him and Rachel Dozel had like a conversation,
25:42which made him be like, she was like, yo, listen, this black thing is pretty,
25:45pretty fun. You should try it. It's pretty cool. You should try it out. You should do it.
25:48But yeah, it's just, it's unusual. Hashtag blame Rachel. Yes. Yes. Very unusual.
25:52Vaughn? Well, I'm sorry, Tom, get your DNA on. I mean, do you? I think he took
25:58the compliment from us black folk that he might, you know, got a little soul in them. And I don't mind you
26:04finding out the real truth. But if you do find out, you don't have any black and you don't do it.
26:10Just let it go. Let it go. Let it go. Be you, do you. But I don't think there's anything wrong
26:15with finding out where you get all that soul from. Damn. Okay. Go Tom. She said, go Tom.
26:19Show nuh. Tony? He said, show nuh. I think he's Slade. I think he needs to find out where he is,
26:26where his ancestry, ancestry is from in Africa. And I think Tom Jones should also take Raven
26:32Simone so she can figure out what continent in Africa she's from. I knew you. I knew you were going
26:36there. I knew you were going there. But no, I think it's a great thing. I think that if having dark hair
26:42and being soulful makes you black, then I guess Robin Thicke is blacker than I am. So I have no clue
26:49what my man Tom was thinking, but I think it's a good thing. Maybe more people will go get encouraged
26:54to find out where they're from. Tony, you still all mizzy. Don't feel no kind of way you all mizzy.
27:00Let's see what y'all are saying on social media. It looks like Brittany Johnson is giving this topic
27:05a slushade. She says, Slade for trying to know his genetic history. Shade depending on what he does
27:10with the information. Okay, Vaughn. So a little bit in line with what you were saying. Thank you,
27:14Brittany, for chiming in. Next up, a trailer for Spike Lee's much anticipated and controversial new film,
27:19Chirac, was released earlier this week. The trailer focuses on gun violence in Chicago and portrays a
27:24fictional movement led by women of color to deprive men of sex if they continue to engage in the gun
27:29violence. The film features a star-setting cast, Samuel L. Jackson, Tiana Paris, Nick Cannon, Angela
27:34Bassett, and Dave Chappelle, just to name a few. The trailer had Twitter abuzz with mixed reviews,
27:38some tweeting that the film is too cheesy, lacks originality and rawness, and is too Hollywood.
27:44Nonetheless, the film is set to be released on December 4th. Based on the trailer, what are your
27:49thoughts? Slade or shade? Oh, wait, wait. Oh, oh, we have a slushé and two shades. Okay, Vaughn,
27:55why the slushé? Why the slushé? I'mma slushé it because it looks like it could possibly be
28:01another good Spike Lee joint. Okay. And you can't really hate on nothing that Nick Cannon is in.
28:06I mean, let's be serious, all right? And I saw Angela Bassett in it. Right, right. Anything she's in kind of
28:11makes it an automatic black classic. So I'mma give it a slay for that. Okay. But I'mma shade the marketing
28:17tools because it it's portraying the idea in its marketing that it's supposed to be about what's
28:23going on in Chicago, which is a very serious matter. So maybe it should have been a documentary
28:28in that aspect. Okay. So I gotta like shade out the whole marketing tool. You just wish it was delivered
28:34in a different way. If it was delivered differently, I think people wouldn't be so mad at it. Okay.
28:39All right, Tony. Absolute shade. We are coming off of a summer where we saw
28:45the whole straight out of Compton, that trailer watching straight out of Compton's trailer and
28:51then watching Shyrak was like watching Beyonce perform and then watching Little Mama.
28:59Whoa. Major, major shade. That's how it was.
29:03I like Little Mama. That's how it was.
29:05You took the snow away after this.
29:06Sausage. That it was, it was, it was that. Listen, let me tell you something.
29:10I love Spike. Malcolm X, probably the greatest film that I've ever seen. School days did a great
29:16job in breaking down light skin and dark skin issues, fraternities and sororities,
29:22having a message and yet still be entertaining. Do the right thing. So many cult classics.
29:27This is just a trailer, but it made no sense. Some, it made it look like somehow women are
29:33responsible for the violence that's going on in Chicago, which I'm just, I'm just saying,
29:37I'm just saying just, just that, just that. Then the biggest epic fail was having Nick Cannon
29:44come off as a gangster from Chicago.
29:46Tony, you have a lot going on. You have a lot going on, and that's terrible.
29:49Wait, let me get your opinion, Loki.
29:50In a more serious note, I believe what's going on in Chicago is not to be mocked.
29:54It's not to be, you know, made fun of. This is the wrong way to shed light on a situation
29:59that's been really just bringing that city down. And the fact they call it Chirac
30:04makes a lot of people upset, especially people from that city. And it's just, that's unacceptable
30:09to me. Okay. All right. Well, we're going to go ahead and move right along. Former prison guard
30:13Jeffrey Felix, who befriended O.J. Simpson while locked up, is writing a book about the football
30:17legend. The book is set to detail several private conversations between Felix and Simpson, including
30:22Simpson's allegedly fathering Khloe Kardashian and being upset that Cuba Gooding Jr. is playing
30:27him in FX's American Crime Story, The People vs. O.J. Simpson. Simpson told Felix,
30:32just call me Matt because people are always stepping on me and giving me nothing.
30:35All right. What do y'all say, panelists? Slay the shade. Slay the shade. Oh, shade, shade, shade.
30:40All right. Tony, make it snappy. Why the shade? So this is O.J.'s supposed friend,
30:45a guy who befriended him while he was in prison. And he took that and sold all of his secrets.
30:50Okay. That's kind of shady to me. That's shady to you? Low key?
30:53Uh, O.J., just sit down. Let it go. Just let it go. I think you better let it go.
30:58Yeah, just let it go. Can I second that? No.
31:00Okay. Just let it go. Yvonne, I'm going to give you the final word.
31:03I don't think O.J. should let it go. And I think it is very shady of his friend to do that. He should
31:09absolutely make money off of O.J. Simpson, O.J. Simpson, off of his own name and likeness. He was not
31:17found guilty 150,000 years ago, but he still has to keep paying over and over. And they got
31:22it right with that title because it's been the people versus O.J. It has definitely been.
31:26Cut it out. Well, thank all of you so much for joining us on today's Slay the shade. Even you,
31:30Tony. Thank you so much. Fun. You're welcome back anytime. Thank you.
31:33Thank you very much. I had a great time. Thanks to all of today's guests. And of course,
31:37our wonderful viewers streaming us maybe from work. I don't know. I'm just saying. I'm your host,
31:42Dana Blair, and I'll see you here next Thursday on Essence Live.
