Début des années 1980, à Miami. Meier Suchowlanski, dit Meyer Lansky, âgé de 80 ans, se confie au journaliste David Stone. Le vieil homme est un ancien parrain de la mafia américaine, désormais retiré des affaires. Stone se voit bien en écrivain et espère publier la biographie qui fera enfin décoller sa carrière. Les autorités fédérales agissent dans l'ombre pour débusquer encore des preuves qui impliqueraient Lansky dans de vieilles affaires. Le patriarche veut, pour sa part, donner sa propre version de certains faits qui lui ont été reprochés...
