Atteint d'une maladie cardiaque, Daniel Blake, menuisier, ne peut plus travailler. Or, l'administration ne l'entend pas de cette oreille : il doit rechercher un emploi sous peine de sanction. Alors que, âgé de 59 ans, il doit apprendre à se débrouiller avec un ordinateur pour faire ses démarches, il croise le chemin de Katie, une femme célibataire mère de deux enfants. Elle a dû quitter sa ville natale pour ne pas être placée dans un foyer d'accueil. Ensemble, ils vont se serrer les coudes. Daniel finit par décrocher un emploi mais doit renoncer à cause de ses problèmes de santé. Il engage alors une bataille contre l'administration et ses aberrations...
