Invitée à une émission télévisée friande de vérités intimes, Birdee Pruitt apprend que son mari, Bill, la trompe avec sa voisine, qui est également sa meilleure amie. Bouleversée, elle quitte le domicile familial en compagnie de sa fille, Bernice, pour regagner sa ville natale, Smithville, dans le Texas. Elle retrouve ainsi sa mère, Ramona, et son père, atteint de la maladie d'Alzheimer. Un jour, pour lui changer les idées, Ramona décide d'inviter Justin Matisse, un des anciens soupirants de Birdee, toujours amoureux d'elle. Mais celui-ci se heurte rapidement à l'hostilité de Bernice qui, par ailleurs, connaît quelques déboires dans sa nouvelle école...
