00:29it's okay to be like girl I can't go to the movies this is fine I can't go to the club this time
00:34I can't play around because you have to be intentional about everything you're doing now

00:45hello hello hello y'all with me when you get that job when you get that opportunity when you move
00:53to that new city you'll already have it and it all boils down to discipline so just give some more
01:00disruption for that last panel because I was back there like yes time management yes written and oral
01:06communication yes there were so many gems in that so on the next note I see a lot of phones out just
01:14make sure that you are hashtagging g u disruptor summit when you're posting on tick tock instagram
01:23youtube shorts all the things on social media just make sure that you put that on there so we can
01:28capture it and move on so how y'all feeling y'all feeling good do you feel like you've learned
01:34something okay point at the stage and say I learned something if you're on the live stream chat say I
01:40learned something I know we can't hear y'all but we learned stuff in here all right so our next
01:45conversation is about something that can help us at every stage of our careers did you all know that
01:52it's estimated that in one lifetime we all of us everybody that can hear my voice will spend over 90,000
02:02hours at work I don't like that for us either that's a lot of time that's a lot of time especially
02:10with daylight savings time being so aggressive this year it's too much it's way too much it's giving
02:17daylight debt okay daylight savings time is too far in our pockets all right and just think about what
02:24might happen if we began our professional development process today and I say we not just because I have a
02:31cute job at YouTube but I still have places to go we all have somewhere to go so career development
02:36does not stop say it career development does not stop all right so to get that started we're doing
02:45another phone exercise pull your phones out again okay download the eSuite app okay everybody pause we're
02:52about to do Rachel and the B that is e s u i t e app from the app store and you can find that on google
03:00play if you have an android or you can also just get it all at once at the essence 360 app so without
03:10further ado here to share more about that is Alfonso David president and CEO of the global black economic
03:19forum and Aliyah Haq COO of the academy for advancing excellence they're here to help us crack the career
03:26code let's welcome them to the stage hello everyone hello hello hello so we are very very happy to be
03:51here we're excited to be here to announce a new professional development app that is going to be
03:59relevant to all of you in this room all of you who are watching streaming watching this live and as you
04:06heard from the introduction all of us spent an extraordinary amount of time working we need to
04:13make sure that we have resources that can actually help us transition from job to job but importantly help us
04:21transition and level up in our professional lives so as you heard I'm Alfonso David I'm the president
04:27and CEO of the global black economic forum and we are a global enterprise that's focused on economic
04:34opportunity and actually economic freedom for members of the black diaspora and marginalized communities
04:40one of the companies that we work with and one of our subsidiary is the academy for advancing excellence
04:47Aliyah Haq is the chief operating officer for the academy for advancing excellence and they
04:53are actually responsible for implementing this app that we're launching today so when I talk a very
05:01small amount of time we have about seven minutes or so to talk about this app and we're going to try
05:07to get in as much information as possible so you understand why this is important so first Aliyah
05:12why don't you tell us a little bit about who you are and what brought you to this work all right so
05:18I am the chief operating officer as Alfonso mentioned of the academy for advancing excellence I am
05:24repeating that so you'll find us on social media and start to follow us on LinkedIn especially and I've
05:30been in executive leadership development for 18 years so this is part of my life's work and what we do at
05:36the academy for advancing excellence is we help to create equitable workplaces so your 90,000 hours
05:42that you're spending at a job should not be in vain right we want to create workspaces where people
05:48cannot just survive but truly thrive and we do that in a host of ways and one of the ways that we do that
05:54is through coaching and years ago early in my career I had no idea what coaching was but if you download
06:01the app there's a sign over there that you can actually there's a QR code that you can scan
06:06and it's on the two platforms as essence 360 no spaces and you'll be able to download that app so
06:14a little bit about me and we'll talk more about coaching but I know you've got something else for
06:18me yeah so let's talk about coaching actually let's get to that because many people may not know
06:24what coaching is and why coaching is relevant to them so let's talk a little bit about what is coaching
06:30coaching so coaching is when you have this independent third party who had who can help
06:35you go to your next level so there are all types of coaches there are life coaches transformational
06:41coaches but we are all about development professional development so we're executive
06:46coaches essentially but it doesn't mean that you have to be an executive it means that you can be on
06:51whatever path so if you're a creative trust me you need a coach if you are in transition you need a
06:59coach if you're in a corporate career you need a coach if you work in non-profit everyone can
07:04utilize a coach if you've ever played a sport you know your coach is not going to tell you exactly
07:10what to do they're going to give you tips they're going to give you hints they're going to give you
07:14the blueprint so that you can be at your best coaches support and challenge you so that you can
07:20again level up and you can be the best version of you so let's talk about a few things
07:24what would you give us some examples of how you would coach someone or certain items that you
07:33think or specific goals or ideas or thoughts that people bring to the table when they say
07:38i would like to get receive coaching so we were just talking about resumes we actually have resume
07:44review as part of our coaching coaching responsibilities or coaching suite of services
07:49so you might be in transition and say you know what i need a third party to look at my resume we
07:55do that type of work you might have had a conflict with someone at work and you need help to really
08:00get through it because maybe you don't feel like hr has your back or you don't feel like you've got
08:05that friend at work to talk to you coaching will help you with that maybe you want to talk about what
08:10it looks like to get from point a to point c and you need the help to get to get all of the steps so
08:15that you can continue to move up the ladder if that's what you're choosing to do if you're an
08:20entrepreneur maybe you're thinking about a new product and you need help thinking through okay
08:25how am i going to bring this product to market our coaches can help you with that as well what if i'm
08:30not in the workforce yet let's just assume i'm finishing college or i'm in graduate school do you
08:38think that coaching is helpful for someone who's going through the educational system right now
08:43absolutely i think that coaching is one of the things that we have not always had access to
08:48and the access will give you the leg up it'll give you the information that you need that you might not
08:53even think to know to ask for and if i would have had a coach to help me with the transition from college
08:59to the workforce i just think about how helpful that could have been for me or even from high school
09:04to college to think through things like oh you should always go to your professor's office hours
09:09i my mother was not a college graduate nor was my father so there were certain things about
09:14navigating even college that i didn't know that had i had a coach it would have been very helpful
09:18and what what would you say is the most misunderstood concept when it comes to coaching because when we
09:27think of professional coaching many people don't have a clear concept of what that is but there's
09:32a lot of miscommunication or misinformation about coaching so one a coach is not a therapist so
09:39that's one trust me like if you need a therapist which i'm all about go get a therapist but a coach
09:44is not a therapist and a coach is also not going to tell you exactly what to do they're going to give
09:50you some guidelines some frameworks some ideas but they're not going to say go do this because we all
09:56have free will and we have the opportunity to really build our own capabilities and that's actually
10:01the power of coaching is that you get an opportunity to build those capabilities so the purpose of this
10:07this uh session is to wet your palate on what coaching is what we're going to do is we're going
10:14to provide and the folks in the room know who they are we've identified 10 people and we're going to
10:22provide free coaching sessions to those 10 people and then we're going to come back and they will tell
10:30you about their experiences and they will tell you about why coaching may or may not have been
10:36helpful for them we almost we can guarantee that they will all say coaching was actually helpful and
10:43not only helpful but potentially transformative in how they see their careers how they see the future
10:49how they see possibilities moving forward and so we're going to take a break we're going to leave
10:54the stage we're going to provide these free sessions to the 10 people we've identified and
11:00is during office hours at 1 30 i believe 1 30 to 2 and we're going to provide coaching sessions to
11:07these folks and then we're going to come back and talk a little bit more about coaching again if you
11:12haven't downloaded the app you can go to essence 360 download the app learn about coaching get all of
11:20the information you need and then we're going to come back and provide more information thank you all
11:25for having us thank you
