00:00From finding your audience to knowing what brands look like, for when seeking out influencers,
00:04please make some noise for Danielle Wright and Raven Tracy.
00:18All right.
00:20All right, what's up Atlanta?
00:22Can I hear y'all?
00:23Last pound of the day.
00:24Let's get hype, let's get hype.
00:26All right.
00:27So it's been really great seeing and connecting with all of you.
00:30I'm excited for this first panel because I have my first ever co-host, the Raven Tracy.
00:37Hi, everybody.
00:39How are you feeling, Raven?
00:41I'm feeling amazing.
00:42Happy to be here.
00:43Love it.
00:44So since this is your first time on the GU stage, I want you to do a cute introduction for our panelists.
00:50I got you, girl.
00:51Come into the stage to join us and feed your funds.
00:57Let's give it up for Kayla Nicole.
00:59whoo, Alicia Scott and Hailey Rose.
01:22All right, can we give it up one more time
01:24for our beautiful panelists?
01:29All right, so let's get this thing started.
01:32Hailey, I wanna start with you, girl.
01:35How do you decide what type of content resonates most
01:38with your audience on Instagram?
01:40Authenticity and being genuine in myself.
01:46I started on Instagram maybe when I was 15.
01:51That's when I really started to come into myself
01:55and figure out what direction and path
01:58I wanted to lead on the internet.
02:01And it was mental health and being a mental health advocate
02:04but also still putting on clothes
02:08and just being a girl and having fun
02:11and not making it so psychological
02:15and just watered down book-wise, I guess.
02:20And I realized that a lot of my audience,
02:23no matter if I take a six-month break
02:25or a year break from the internet, they'll always be there
02:27simply because I'm big on sisterhood and mental health
02:30and just engaging with them in a genuine way.
02:34Yeah, yeah, I love that.
02:36Because I think one thing about you,
02:37you are a rising it girl, let me tell you.
02:40And I just really love your content
02:42because it just comes off so authentic
02:44and just so genuine, so I love it.
02:46So, Raven, what's her next question, girl?
02:49Okay, so this one is for Alicia.
02:51Alicia.
02:53Okay, so what type of strategies do you have
02:56to turn your followers into loyal customers?
03:00So, for me, I'm coming from two different angles.
03:03So, for those who don't know, I have my own business.
03:05It's called Range Beauty.
03:07We are makeup for Skin That Acts Up.
03:09I've been on Shark Tank and really crazy cool platforms.
03:12Love it.
03:13And so, I'm coming from the brand point,
03:14but then I also made sure to turn my own personal Instagram
03:18into my brand as well.
03:20So, doing a lot of business partnerships
03:22and so always making sure that my content aligns
03:25with my audience, plugging things that aren't always sponsored
03:29and actually showing off things that I consistently use
03:32in my day-to-day when running my business
03:35to gain the trust and loyalty from your audience.
03:38And I feel like that's what helps me convert
03:40whenever I'm implementing other tools or strategies.
03:42You really want to make sure you're building that trust
03:44and that loyalty and making sure that you're not just coming off
03:47as, like, a sponsored page
03:48or you're only posting when you have deals.
03:50Like, post about what's going on in your day-to-day
03:53to create that audience.
03:54And I think another thing that people don't talk about enough
03:57or maybe you don't know,
03:59but call to actions are a really, really big thing.
04:02So, like, as simple as just adding tech.
04:10I'm going to brow this real quick.
04:17It doesn't work.
04:18Just adding in that call to action.
04:21So, telling people to click the link in your bio
04:22or sign up for text now or something.
04:26Those things really do help
04:28because sometimes people just don't think.
04:30So, if you just add, you know, click the link,
04:32you'll be surprised.
04:33I mean, how many people click it?
04:36Love it.
04:41All right.
04:41So, for Kayla,
04:44how important is visual aesthetics in your Instagram feed
04:47and what guidelines do you follow to maintain it?
04:50Okay.
04:50I don't know if this is the best question for me.
04:52Raven and I were laughing backstage
04:53because I'm really not an aesthetic girly.
04:56I really admire the girls that do it,
04:58that are, like, visual architects
04:59and your feed is moody blue
05:01and then it transfers to pink
05:03and then it's orange
05:03because mine is just random.
05:06It's given sporadic,
05:07but I think that's also a reflection of just my brand
05:10and, like, the authenticity
05:11that I try to lead with on social media.
05:13I think you have to find what works for you.
05:16I think at the very most,
05:17what I will do is make sure that the thumbnail
05:19or the main photo on my page varies.
05:22I do this pose a lot.
05:24So, if it's a too many arm-up elbow photos,
05:27I will strategically not do that
05:29so that the flow is a little bit better.
05:32I love that.
05:32And, Raven, I want to ask you, too,
05:34because I think you have your brand Body Bite,
05:36Raven, Tracy.
05:38Okay.
05:39Woo-hoo.
05:39Body Bates.
05:40How many of y'all are a Body Babe?
05:42Raise your hand.
05:42Period.
05:43Love it.
05:44I love that.
05:45Love it.
05:45So, I have to ask you, too,
05:47like, how do visual aesthetics work
05:49within your brand page for sure?
05:51I feel like it's so important for me
05:53because even on my personal page,
05:56it's like a journal for me.
05:57I feel like people like to feel connected to something
06:00and, like, I'm not just trying to push clothes.
06:03It's sisterhood.
06:04It's creative.
06:05It's community.
06:06It's, like, the whole thing.
06:08It all goes hand-in-hand for me.
06:10I respect the people that don't,
06:11but for me, it's just, like, so important.
06:14Like, yeah.
06:16So, yeah.
06:17I love it.
06:18And, Raven, you want to kick off with our next question?
06:20Yeah.
06:22How do you stay updated with the latest trends on social media
06:25and how do you adapt your strategy accordingly?
06:30That's a great question.
06:32I think the biggest thing is there are trends happening every single day.
06:35You don't need to do every trend.
06:37Like, every trend isn't going to make sense for your page,
06:39for your audience, for your brand.
06:41So pick the ones, make it a cool combination.
06:43So there's going to be, like, fun, silly ones, you know, the dancing ones.
06:46There's going to be educational ones.
06:48So find the ones that make sense for you and what you're delivering
06:51so that your audience and your customers or whomever else isn't confused.
06:54I think a big tip also is to follow pages that inspire you,
06:59pages that are constantly on the trend so that you're in the loop.
07:03I'm 33 years old, so I don't know what's going on, for real.
07:08And in order for me to stay in the loop, I have to stay inspired and kind of in the know.
07:12If you feel weird about following all these people from your own page, make a Finsta.
07:16I know y'all know about that.
07:17Get you a Finsta and use it for work.
07:19Follow brands that inspire you, that'll encourage you to create content,
07:22and that'll keep you in the loop.
07:23I always talk about my algorithm and what I show myself every day.
07:33And when I scroll on the Internet, which is, back then it was all over the place.
07:39Now it's positivity for me because when I'm looking on social media,
07:43it could already be a bit draining.
07:46And now that I'm older, I'm like, I want to follow pages that are inspiring
07:52and that lead me and motivate me in the mornings if I do go on the Internet
07:57or, like, before I go to bed and I'm scrolling and I see good things.
08:02So, yeah.
08:03Great.
08:04Love it.
08:06Okay, next question.
08:08How do you guys handle negative feedback or negative criticisms against yourself?
08:12Do you have, like, any strategies in place for, like, crisis management?
08:16Because you know how it goes.
08:18Is anyone hiring crisis management?
08:20I think I might need it.
08:23I think, for me, personally, I have to remind myself that it's only relevant if you give it energy.
08:28If it's a nasty comment, a nasty DM.
08:31The old me, I like to respond.
08:34And I like to DM them directly.
08:36But it serves no purpose.
08:37That's a waste of your time and energy.
08:39Block them.
08:40Delete the comment.
08:41Delete the DM.
08:42Maybe even delete the app for the day if that's what you feel need be.
08:45But take that space to care for you because that's the most important end-all be-all.
08:50You only get one life.
08:50You get one body.
08:51You get one mental.
08:52Take care of that first.
08:54And I think another thing to remember is a lot of times these people aren't even stepping close
09:00to what you are putting out into the world and what you're creating and who you're showing up to be.
09:05Like, these are a lot of keyboard warriors who probably, like, if they had to sit on the stage
09:10or if they had to post on Instagram or on TikTok, like, they couldn't do it.
09:14Could never.
09:14Oh, could never.
09:15Could never.
09:16So just remember that, too.
09:17Like, what you're doing and who you are.
09:20We need you.
09:20We need to see it.
09:21And don't let people and their nasty words or unkind things, like, deter you from doing that.
09:27I always walk with what my mom taught me growing up in every situation.
09:31Um, no response is the best response.
09:35And when people ask that, I've gotten that question a few times.
09:41I don't.
09:41There's just nothing to respond to when you get negative energy.
09:45And just exactly what you said, like, these people are probably not even anywhere.
09:49And most likely want to be where you are.
09:52So that's nine times out of ten where it thins from.
09:54I feel like, for me personally, like, I have a strong sense of self.
10:01I know who I am.
10:02I know the person I am.
10:03I know my values.
10:04So the mean things that people say, like, I don't let it get to me because I know it's just not true.
10:10And those people probably don't know themselves.
10:13So if anything, I feel more so bad for them.
10:16And, yeah, I just keep putting out good energy.
10:19And I believe in everything is a mirror.
10:21So what you put out is what you receive.
10:22So, yeah.
10:24Exactly, exactly.
10:25And, yes, please clap for them.
10:27Come on.
10:28Thanks, y'all.
10:29I really like these responses because I think all four of you guys are prominent women on social media.
10:35And I know how it must feel so difficult when it's, like, you're literally just waking up, going shopping, minding your business, and somebody is just commenting something out of pocket.
10:44And it's, like, you don't even know what you're talking about.
10:46Like, shut up.
10:47It's projection.
10:50No, it really, really is.
10:52So I think for all of you, you guys have a personal brand.
10:57But then you always have yourself behind the scenes.
10:59And so, like, how do you balance your personal brand with your business or your influencer brand on social media?
11:08I give myself a break.
11:10Before Essence approached me about doing this panel, I was off the Internet for a good seven months.
11:16Maybe it's a stretch.
11:17Maybe six.
11:18And I reached a point where I was, like, I am so – I have something called Strictly for the Girls that I bring women together.
11:27And I do Girl Talk every Tuesday and Thursday on Zooms.
11:32I try to stay consistent.
11:34But I reached a point where I was, like, I come – I can't help anybody if I can't help myself first.
11:41And I realized that separating my personal brand with my business and what I show to the Internet is important.
11:50Because I'm always going to be myself on the Internet.
11:53But my peace and my sanity is everything before anything else.
11:59Love it.
12:00I say the same thing, girl.
12:01I'll go missing.
12:03They're like, is she pregnant somewhere?
12:04Where is she?
12:05No, girl.
12:06I'm just taking care of me first, taking care of my mental, taking care of my family, my dogs.
12:10Like, it's so important because, yeah, social media can be a lot.
12:15And especially, like, for me running my business, like, I run the social.
12:18So I'm, like, posting all day long, posting on the feed, prepping the feed, creating the feed, creating all the content, the ideas, the designs.
12:26I'm like, girl, I'm tired.
12:28Like, I don't have time to get dressed, do my makeup and post on Instagram and stuff.
12:33So, like, sometimes I find it's easier when, like, they go hand in hand when they, like, roll off each other.
12:39But if not, I don't have pressure to, like, I just do what's best for me at the end of the day.
12:45I think for me early on, I had to take a step back and treat social media like a job because that's what I wanted it to be.
12:54I wanted it to be my full-time job, and God, you know, blessed me for it to be my full-time job now.
12:59But originally, I had to treat it like a job, which meant I needed to create schedules, which means that if I'm working 9 to 5,
13:06then on Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 7, that's going to be my strategy day.
13:11I'm going to plan out my content schedule for the month.
13:14And then every other Sunday, I'm going to shoot my content because I've got to go to work Monday to Friday.
13:19So my weekends were my content strategy shoot days.
13:22And that's how I found that balance.
13:23But now, same thing.
13:27I will go MIA if I feel the need.
13:30And I think it's important for people to know, too, that your followers will always be there.
13:34Like, we get really scared of the algorithm, and we're not posting.
13:37And I'm going to be, what's it called when you're, like, shadow banned.
13:41Yeah, like, I don't even know if that's really a thing.
13:44But don't be afraid of it.
13:45Like, you have to take care of your mental first, for sure, and strategize.
13:49Strategize, strategize, strategize.
13:50And I feel like your true supporters understand that.
13:53Like, they know you.
13:55They're like, oh, I already know how you are, Raven.
13:56My cancer sister.
13:58Like, you get it, girl.
13:59You know.
14:00Where the cancer's at?
14:01Hey, girl.
14:02Cancer.
14:03Hey, girl, you get it.
14:03So, before we get into the next question, I want to ask y'all, before we move, what do you mean by taking a social media break?
14:13Like, are y'all deleting the app, or you're just not getting on it?
14:15Like, what does that mean?
14:17I feel like so many people say that.
14:18I'm just going MIA.
14:19I'm not posting on my close friends.
14:21I'm not posting.
14:22I'm not liking nothing.
14:23I might go in there and, like, you know, review a few things or whatever, make sure everything copacetic.
14:28But I'm just, I might not get on there all week or whatever, but I might get on there all day.
14:32I just don't feel the need to post and engage.
14:35So, just taking that time for myself.
14:37I love it.
14:38Because I feel like one thing about me, I try to be a mysterious girly, but then I take that one selfie and I'm like, I kind of want to post it.
14:45And I'm the complete opposite.
14:47I'm the opposite.
14:48I get sick of looking at myself.
14:49It's like, if I got to look at one more picture of me and post another picture of me, I'm tired of it.
14:54You know?
14:54Sometimes you just need a break from that face.
14:56Exactly.
14:56And I think that's when, like, hobbies need to come into play, too.
14:59Like.
15:00Go outside.
15:01Yes, please go.
15:01Touch grass.
15:02Touch grass.
15:03Touch the grass.
15:03Like, stop scrolling if you need to on iPhone.
15:06I don't know if Android, I don't know about chocolate.
15:08On iPhone, you can put a time limit on your app so you can make sure, like, you're not spending too much time on them.
15:13But making sure you have hobbies outside is just scrolling on social media.
15:18I love that Kayla is, like, she has specific days where she's doing content strategy or, you know, figuring out what the balance is.
15:24And you have to remember that you're not what you do.
15:27Like, I think a lot of times when you start, you know, building out your follower base and people start recognizing you as well, a lot of times you're just like, oh, this is who I am and that's not true.
15:38Like, this is just something you, this is a job.
15:40This is not who you are as a whole person.
15:43And so making sure you remember that and, yeah, just, like, tap into other things.
15:48And you'll be surprised how much inspiration you find outside of the app in the real world with real people that you're trying to appeal to on the app.
15:56Love it.
15:57Raven, I okay took your question.
15:59So you want to take the next one?
16:02Seven.
16:03Oh.
16:04Hey, we just having a communication.
16:06We're just flowing so organically.
16:07How do you balance your personal brand with your business brand on social media?
16:14We did that one.
16:16Which type of content, Reels, Stories, IGTV do you find most effective for your audience and why?
16:22I'll split this.
16:26So on the range page, I had to learn what that audience likes.
16:30So I know for us, because we talk about skincare-infused makeup, a lot of times our audience members are looking for how we differentiate ourselves from other makeup brands.
16:38Like, what skincare ingredients are we using?
16:40Do we have dermatologists on our page talking?
16:43Estheticians?
16:43What education are we providing behind us saying that this is good for your skin?
16:47And then on my personal brand page, I do different business partnerships like Uber for Business or Avery, QuickBooks, H&R Block, things like that.
16:56And so I'm always trying to make sure that that's more so aligned with, you know, how I'm actually using it in my day-to-day and giving tips and feedback to other founders and entrepreneurs about how they could implement this in their day and make it easier to get their work done.
17:11So for one, it's like this is how you can kind of make your business life easier.
17:14And then for the business page on range, it's like here's how we're trying to make your makeup life easier.
17:21Love it, love it.
17:22So I want to ask the crowd, how many of y'all want to be an influencer or a creator, content creator?
17:28Okay, so a lot of y'all.
17:30So for this question, y'all need to pay attention.
17:32I want to ask all of you, how do you approach influencers for potential collaborations, Alicia and Raven?
17:40And then Haley and Kayla, what is like the opposite side from an influencer's perspective of brands coming out to you?
17:47Like how do you determine which ones are worth it, which ones are like, no, I'm going to leave that alone?
17:51So personally, like, I'm blessed to say that a lot of the people that we worked with for Body, like, they reached out to us.
18:01But there are people that I find aligned with the brand and the brand identity.
18:07And I'm like, wow, she would be perfect for Body.
18:10Like, you know, it's just like the ethos of the brand.
18:13Is she a girl's girl?
18:15Is she into fashion?
18:17Like, does she show her lifestyle?
18:19And like, is she like a girl that's around a lot of girls?
18:23Like, I'm like, okay, she's perfect for the brand.
18:26So those are the type of girls that I reach out to.
18:29I have to agree.
18:30Definitely looking for makeup enthusiasts, skincare enthusiasts.
18:33But I think the other big, like, factor I check is are you a true influencer with your audience?
18:41So I think a lot of times people say that they're, oh, I do have influence, but I'm checking your engagement.
18:46I'm checking what percentage is your engagement.
18:48I'm checking how many views, likes, comments are you actually getting on your post.
18:52And then I'm also checking to see, like, do you have that true following of people in your comments?
18:56Like, girl, I'm running to the store right now to get that lipstick, to get that shirt.
19:00Like, what is your true reach with your audience?
19:02Do they trust you?
19:03Are you going to post my foundation and say it's your favorite?
19:06And then next week you're like, oh, my gosh, this is actually my new favorite.
19:09Where is the trust?
19:10And, like, am I paying you to make sure that you're truly engaging with your audience to make sure that my dollar goes a long way?
19:17I love it.
19:18I think as a creator, I always tell the girlies that your no is a lot more powerful than your yes sometimes.
19:25You don't have to work with every brand.
19:27You don't have to accept every deal.
19:29Because at the end of the day, what really matters is the trust that your followers have with you.
19:34So if I come to y'all and I say, use this dry shampoo, now, all my black girls, do y'all use dry shampoo?
19:41No.
19:42Right.
19:42Because why would I ever do that?
19:44It don't work for our hair.
19:44It don't make no sense.
19:45And the bag might be nice.
19:47But the ethos, as you mentioned, doesn't align with my brand.
19:50It doesn't align with my girls.
19:52And I don't want to break the trust that I have with my community trying to promote any old everything just because I'm getting a check.
19:57How you, in fitness, and you post in Jules.
20:01See, and I would never do that.
20:03You wouldn't.
20:04I promote.
20:05Kayla is very fitness oriented.
20:07Yeah.
20:07Thanks, girl.
20:09Haley?
20:10Kind of piggybacking off of what Kayla said, whatever aligns with my moral values, and if they don't, I don't take it.
20:16It just all ties into just being authentic because your audience does realize, and they notice, like, I see on TikTok sometimes where certain creators will promote everything.
20:30They'll be like, ah, I knew it.
20:32You got me.
20:32Towards the end, like, this is just another ad that you're knowing that you actually may not use this product.
20:38It's, like, um, yeah.
20:41I think for me, so the way my brand started, I started out with doing, like, paid posts for, like, Fashion Nova, Pretty Little Thing, like, all these brands and stuff.
20:50And I found myself, like, working really, really, really, really hard to, you know, make the money.
20:56And I then turned that into, like, putting all the money into body and funding it myself.
21:01And, like, now I don't really do, I haven't done paid posts in, like, years, but it's a personal preference of mine.
21:08And I feel like that is part of, like, why my followers and supporters, like, really rock with me.
21:14And they know that, like, if I'm posting something and I'm tagging it, it's because I'm really, really using it, and I really, really love it.
21:20And, yeah, like, I love body that much, so it's, like, I put everything I have into that.
21:25And, like, I love paid posts and stuff like that.
21:28The money is good.
21:29But it's just, like, a personal preference and stuff, too.
21:31So you can go that route, too.
21:32You can use it to fund your future business and stuff because, you know, some people do want to be business owners and stuff, and that's okay, too.
21:40And another note on that, too, strategize.
21:42I always would push strategy.
21:44If you want to start your own fitness apparel brand, start reaching out to brands or start working with brands that are in that lane.
21:50Reach out to Fabletics.
21:51Reach out to Nike.
21:52Reach out to Adidas because it's going to create an audience that is used to seeing this product.
21:58They're going to buy this product for you.
21:59And then when it's time for you to launch your own business and you want to start selling your own apparel, oh, we already know that.
22:04We can trust this person because she always has the cutest work outfits.
22:07Let me go to her and grab some.
22:09And while we're at it, follow me at Tribe Therapy.
22:10That's my Instagram name.
22:12And I will be selling apparel soon.
22:14You like that flow?
22:15I love that.
22:15Hey, Liz, fill it out.
22:16Tribe, T-R-I-B-E, and then therapy is spelled phonetically, T-H-E-R-E-P-E.
22:22Thank you so much.
22:24Love it, love it.
22:26So I want to say a little note right now.
22:29So something that Kayla said is, like, you know, if you're trying to start a fitness brand and go out to those fitness brands that you know, I think that also applies to any type of lane you're trying to go through in your career.
22:40Whether you want to be in music, fashion, lifestyle, see who's in those roles that you want to be in and DM them.
22:47It's really simple.
22:48If they don't, DM you back.
22:50Go to the next one.
22:51So just keep trying for sure.
22:53So thinking of y'all's first, you know, entry into social media and building your brands like that and comparing it to where you are now, how do you see the role of social media evolving within your own individual lanes?
23:10I will say, for me, I think the biggest lesson I've learned is social media is not the end-all, be-all.
23:16Make sure that you're building an audience elsewhere.
23:18So make sure that you're either building your email subscription list.
23:21Make sure that you're on Slack, Geneva, like on these other different platforms.
23:26Don't rely solely on building your audience on just Instagram or TikTok or Twitter.
23:30That's been my biggest lesson, even with whatever, you know, new apps are coming out.
23:34And, you know, there's always something else dropping for us to be on socially.
23:37But making sure you actually own your audience elsewhere.
23:41So, God forbid, if social media just shut down today, like you're still able to, if you need to sell to them, if you need to communicate with them, if you need to do, you know, live pop-ups or in-person events, you have another way to reach out to them and keep them updated about what's going on.
23:55Yeah, just to piggyback off of that, I use a text service.
23:58So I have, like, over 100,000 people signed up on there.
24:01And I'll just text and say, hey, girl, hey, body babe.
24:04You one of my body babes?
24:06Yeah.
24:07Hey, girl, you know, happy Thanksgiving or whatever.
24:11You know, just connecting with people outside of social media.
24:14And I feel like that's a really, really big key component to, like, engaging with people.
24:19Like, you'd be surprised.
24:20Like, I saw just by adding that, like, what it did for the brand, too.
24:25So I definitely agree with you on that.
24:27What's the text service called?
24:28Is it an app?
24:28Slick Text, baby.
24:29Slick Text, okay, Slick Text, I'm taking notes.
24:32It's really, really, like, impactful, for sure.
24:35I love it.
24:37All right, anybody else want to go?
24:39No?
24:40We're good?
24:40All right, Randy.
24:41That's a really tough question.
24:42Like, I try to live my now moment.
24:45I don't really think about social media in five years.
24:47It's so funny, because one thing about me, like, I'm always on TikTok, and I like following, like, podcast-like people.
24:56And there's this one guy in particular, and he had mentioned that social media is going into sort of like a TV route.
25:05And every influencer is a channel.
25:07And you're really just scrolling through all these channels to see what and who you like.
25:11So I actually threw that question in there because I wanted to ask y'all.
25:14Okay, so I'd love to take a minute to plug everyone's social media handles.
25:20Where can we find you guys?

25:58Oh, I only want to say one thing.
26:03Kind of the question before the last one.
26:06Kayla, you made a good point about reaching out to brands.
26:11I feel like showing up is really important, and I've learned that within college.
26:17You never know who you're going to meet or what opportunities can present themselves.
26:21So show up, because it's important.
26:24So I just wanted to say that.
26:25Love it, love it.
26:26All right, Raven, where can we find you?
26:31So my personal Instagram is SoRaven with three O's, and my business brand for the women,
