"Christian being my closest mate, is easy to write for, because I can easily envision him in parts," said director Scott Cooper who wrote the part with Bale in mind.

00:00I loved it because I loved getting my hands dirty on film as much as possible.
00:08The only things I hated was when we had to stop filming because the lightning strikes
00:11were getting too close and we were going, oh man, it feels so good, you could feel the
00:17electricity in the air, but they'd all be shouting, no, wrap it up, you know, or I'd
00:22be wandering back in and going, Christian, get back in the van, you know, but it was
00:26dynamic, it was fantastic.
00:30An indoctrinated cavalry captain escorts a group of hostiles, Native American prisoners
00:40from New Mexico to Montana, and it's a perilous, but a journey of the soul.
00:47How do we find out who are the real hostiles here?
00:51And it's not just one group, right?
00:53It's many, many groups in terms of the melting pot being probably one of the more
00:59uncomfortable environments a human being can be in, and I think that's what we bring
01:04out.
01:05Could be called a Western and yet could also very much not be called a Western.
01:09It felt like this very existential journey about people and human beings who are faced with
01:15the extremity of what the human body can be pushed to.
01:18I generally tend to have people in mind as I'm writing.
01:24Christian being my closest mate is easy to write for because I can easily envision him
01:30in parts much like I did in Out of the Furnace.
01:34Wes, of course, long admired his work and hoped that he might consider playing the dying chief.
01:42Learning the Cheyenne language was definitely a highlight for me.
01:51But I have to say it was working very closely with everyone because we were all moving in
01:57this group across as the story follows us.
02:02You had a very young French soldier, you had a soldier from West Point, you had the soldier
02:10of soldiers, the captain, blocker, and then you had a Buffalo soldier, myself, and a French
02:17recruit, you know, on top of all that.
02:20And we were running around and we're all individuals from different parts of the world and we're
02:24here and we're sweating and working.
02:27To get that first unit collective together was amazing.
02:31I kind of enjoy it when it gets really uncomfortable, you know, we're all in these woolen, well,
02:36the cavalry, we're all in these woolen jackets all the time, so we're sweating like pigs all day long.
02:42You know, you've got your horse, you get a really great relationship with, there's the
02:47lightning that's going off and that's fantastic, it really feels great.
