John and Jenny unpack how racialized theology, Christian supremacy, and political extremism shaped everything from William Branham’s world to Youth With A Mission’s global footprint. Drawing on archival research and lived experience, they trace the line from British Israelism and Christian Identity theology through Bob Jones University, moral-majority politics, and Branham’s mentors into modern charismatic and New Apostolic Reformation networks. Along the way, they explore how “spiritual warfare,” end-times urgency, and talk of being the “true seed” of Abraham quietly merge race, nation, and faith into a single identity.

00:01:40What it was that we were in I thought it was a religious cult and I came to realize
00:01:45after digging for several years, almost a decade of research, I started to really
00:01:50realize that this was not a religious cult that we were in.
00:01:53We were actually in a political cult.
00:01:55But it was really, it was using religion as the vehicle.
00:02:00When I began publishing some of the heaviest of the information, it was so shocking.
00:02:05That even the people who were critical of the Branham movement,
00:02:10at that time I was publishing the Branham information,
00:02:13even the people who were critical of that movement,
00:02:15were against me publishing it because they just thought it was propaganda.
00:02:20And I had to, I learned that I had to start introducing this information very quickly
00:02:25in bite-sized digestible pieces, or people just simply
00:02:30would not believe it.
00:02:31It's just that bad.
00:02:33So after almost a day,
00:02:35a decade of researching, going through archives of newspapers and courthouses
00:02:40from federal documents, et cetera, I started publishing all of the information that
00:02:45the movement I was in was directly related and directly linked to the Klan.
00:02:50Directly to the second in command of the 1915 Klan.
00:02:54So this was a big
00:02:55deal.
00:02:56But you've hinted at white supremacy a few times, and I wanted to talk
00:03:00through that a bit as it relates to youth with a mission.
00:03:03I want to see how much of
00:03:05it is similar, how much of it was borrowed from what we had in our history
00:03:10and just from a broader sense, you know, try to discuss
00:03:15how that this through youth with a mission, how this impacts the world today.
00:03:20Absolutely.
00:03:21I am so grateful to have this conversation with you.
00:03:24I think
00:03:25it's so important and, and can be shocking.
00:03:29And
00:03:30for me, I think what's important to understand
00:03:35is that when I say white supremacy, people might hear, I think they hate
00:03:40people of color.
00:03:41And that's, that's actually not what I mean.
00:03:44Um, that
00:03:45could be part of it.
00:03:46But I actually think that, um, the work of Isabel Wolk or
00:03:50Wilson in the book cast is really helpful in understanding the
00:03:55structure of white supremacy and that it is so ingrained in the
00:04:00way we've been conditioned to see the world.
00:04:02And I think it so deeply affects our
00:04:05our psychology and the way that we see ourselves and each other that we don't
00:04:10often understand we have been steeped in this culture.
00:04:15that says those with less melanin should be in
00:04:20positions of power and those with more melanin should be in
00:04:25labor positions.
00:04:26And
00:04:28I think that
00:04:30that it is deeply important to talk about our specific organizations and the
00:04:34worlds that we live.
00:04:35that we've been doing.
00:04:36And
00:04:37I think that
00:04:38it's almost
00:04:39like
00:04:40I wouldn't want YWAM to become a scapegoat because I think.
00:04:45YWAM is actually a system of the broader culture.
00:04:50So one of the things that I think is important to understand is.
00:04:55More mainstream evangelicalism and fundamentalism and how.
00:05:00And this might feel really shocking to say.
00:05:05I see that the country of the U.S. has a cult of.
00:05:10Politics that uses religion as a means to an end.
00:05:15And one of the ways that we can see this is that.
00:05:20There was a giant backlash to the 1960s civil rights.
00:05:25Movement that worked to desegregate and worked for equal rights.
00:05:30And anti-discrimination.
00:05:32The very fundamentalist.
00:05:35Christian Bob Jones University.
00:05:37Didn't allow black students until they.
00:05:40Were forced to and then even when they did.
00:05:43They only allowed black students that.
00:05:45Were already married.
00:05:46So that there was no interracial relationships or marriage.
00:05:50That's what they were trying to prevent.
00:05:51That's what they were trying to prevent.
00:05:53And so the IRS.
00:05:55Actually went to go revoke Bob Jones University's tax.
00:06:00Status.
00:06:01Which led into a decade long struggle.
00:06:04Between Bob Jones University.
00:06:05And the IRS.
00:06:07And the IRS.
00:06:08Which ended up actually being.
00:06:10A huge part of what got Reagan elected.
00:06:13And created the formation.
00:06:15The formation of the moral majority.
00:06:16Bob Jones University claimed.
00:06:18That they had.
00:06:20It was their religious liberty.
00:06:22Essentially to be able.
00:06:24To racially destroy.
00:06:25To discriminate.
00:06:25And keep.
00:06:27The Christian institutions.
00:06:28In the way that they want.
00:06:30To discriminate them too.
00:06:31And so we see like.
00:06:33From Reagan.
00:06:34The.
00:06:35Christian.
00:06:37Evangelicals.
00:06:37In the United States.
00:06:38Have been.
00:06:39Pretty much.
00:06:40The strongest voting bloc.
00:06:42And there have been.
00:06:43Different wedge issues.
00:06:44That have.
00:06:45Been discussed.
00:06:46But Randall Ballmer.
00:06:47Does a really good job.
00:06:48Talking about the birth.
00:06:50Of where this huge division.
00:06:53Happened in the first place.
00:06:54And I think that.
00:06:55That it's really necessary.
00:06:57That we look at how.
00:06:59The struggle.
00:07:00For white bodies.
00:07:01To maintain those levers.
00:07:02Of power.
00:07:04Is what.
00:07:05Creates these conditions.
00:07:06For other organizations.
00:07:09Like Y-way.
00:07:10To be so successful.
00:07:12In this country.
00:07:13So if you haven't read it yet.
00:07:15My book.
00:07:15Weaponized Religion.
00:07:16From Christian Identity.
00:07:17To the NAR.
00:07:19This was.
00:07:20And this will sum up.
00:07:20The next few thoughts.
00:07:22That I'm going to give you.
00:07:23Which you.
00:07:23You haven't read this.
00:07:24So.
00:07:25You haven't yet encountered this.
00:07:27But.
00:07:27You're talking about.
00:07:28The white supremacy.
00:07:29Of the 60s.
00:07:30And how it affected.
00:07:30The movement.
00:07:32The religious movement.
00:07:33The political movement.
00:07:34Etc.
00:07:35All of that is covered in the book.
00:07:36But there was a.
00:07:38There's a deeply rooted idea.
00:07:40That.
00:07:42The.
00:07:43People of the.
00:07:45UK.
00:07:46And United States.
00:07:47And Canada.
00:07:48Were the descendants of the lost.
00:07:50Ten tribes of Israel.
00:07:50I think I did mention that part with you.
00:07:52Recently.
00:07:54They.
00:07:55They built upon that.
00:07:56When they added religion.
00:07:57To that.
00:07:58Theology.
00:07:59Or that weird.
00:07:59I.
00:08:00When they added religion to it.
00:08:02They started to bring in other ideas.
00:08:04And it hit America.
00:08:05And it hit America at the most opportunistic time for white supremacy to invade that.
00:08:10Idea.
00:08:10So the merging of these two created what is called Christian identity.
00:08:15And that phrase when you hear it you identify as a Christian that sounds like a great thing but.
00:08:20What they did was so insidious they wrapped the identity of a Christian.
00:08:25And they were trying to say that we because we are.
00:08:30We are the descendants we are the the true the true seed of Abraham that kind of thing.
00:08:35Well in America at that time you had after.
00:08:40Desegregation you had a lot of people especially in the south who were starting to see.
00:08:45The white skin as a separation or division of people and they started to say well they can't.
00:08:50Be of the true seed of Abraham we got the people with black skin from Africa.
00:08:55So this ideology started to take a very.
00:09:00Racist form on the heels of all of that.
00:09:05And I this book kind of walks you through all of the many connections like you mentioned Bob Jones you.
00:09:10And you're welcome back here to the co-host URL where you have from the co-host
00:09:15Baron William T. Frary von Blumberg, who was William Branham's campaign manager.
00:09:20Who was on the director of the family and was also, he was a.
00:09:25He was a director in the family and he was on the board at Bobby Bob Jones.
00:09:30So all of this is linked in ways that you can't fathom.
00:09:33It is all interconnected.
00:09:35It's very, very weird.
00:09:36It's connected to Nazism, to white supremacy, to anti.
00:09:40Semitism.
00:09:41Well, as this is growing and becoming.
00:09:45A religious pseudo religious ideology.
00:09:49It's like.
00:09:50As we said, it wasn't so much that they hated blacks.
00:09:53They were against.
00:09:55The mixture of races because of this true seed of Abraham.
00:09:59If you.
00:10:00If you have a true seed of Abraham and it is a.
00:10:02Blood lineage.
00:10:03You can't mix that blood or.
00:10:05Otherwise you have a no longer seed of Abraham.
00:10:08It's a mixture.
00:10:09So we started to.
00:10:10Introduce ideas that were.
00:10:13Trying to.
00:10:14Establish boundaries.
00:10:15That separated the races, especially as it related to.
00:10:18Marriages.
00:10:19And.
00:10:20Branham was one of the most outspoken people about mixed race.
00:10:24Marriages.
00:10:25Marriages.
00:10:26And he was preaching the two seed.
00:10:28The very racist two seed.
00:10:30Um.
00:10:31Theology.
00:10:32Wherein.
00:10:33Eve.
00:10:34Mated with the serpent in the garden of.
00:10:35Medan.
00:10:36To produce two.
00:10:37Different bloodlines.
00:10:38And there's two separate bloodlines.
00:10:39If you have white skin, you're the good guy.
00:10:40guys. If you have black skin, you're the bad guys. So all of this was spreading.
00:10:45As William Branham's mentor and the person who had ordained
00:10:50him, Roy Davis, who was the second in command of the Klan, he starts
00:10:55the third wave of the Klan, right about the time that this ladder
00:10:58rain thing is being birthed.
00:11:00So you have Klan, you have anti-Semitism, you have
00:11:05politics, you have just this whole conglomeration of different
00:11:10ideologies merging into the religious platform. And I won't go too far with
00:11:15it. You can read the book to find out but what happened next is it bred a
00:11:20religion that, like I said, it's so insane.
00:11:25It's so insidious and what it created. I'm going to open up a
00:11:28little bit more with you than I usually do.
00:11:30Because I try to, out of respect for my family, not go too far. But
00:11:35you mentioned that it isn't just against people.
00:11:40It's just against people of color. That is correct. My, I have my
00:11:44grandmother who is now.
00:11:45deceased. She and my grandfather would
00:11:50often ask a black man,
00:11:55who sat up front to pray for the closing prayer of the services.
00:12:00Whenever you see the public view of this, you don't think of these people as racist,
00:12:04but these are people who are telling...
00:12:05telling you that if a black person marries a white person and they produce children that
00:12:09are mixed race.
00:12:10Those children can't go to heaven, that was one of the doctrines we had.
00:12:15My grandmother, when we would go to a restaurant, my grandmother, if the server
00:12:20was black and served us, she would actually vomit in her mouth.
00:12:25Swallow it and not eat her food because of the person with black skin.
00:12:30But again, to the public, because they did not...
00:12:35appear to be racist from the public eye.
00:12:38Nobody knew any of this was going on.
00:12:40I did because I was at the restaurants.
00:12:42Right?
00:12:43So I saw these things.
00:12:45I grew up not knowing that I was a racist, but was, but you're right.
00:12:50It isn't just against people of color.
00:12:54The movement...
00:12:55It was an ideology.
00:12:56It was about the true seed of Abraham, the British Israel doctrine.
00:13:00It was also about not allowing the Catholic...
00:13:05Catholic system, the Catholic religion to spread.
00:13:08They were very anti-Catholic.
00:13:10They viewed Jews in the same way that they viewed blacks.
00:13:15They did not want the mixed race.
00:13:17And all of this is, if you look at the...
00:13:20fundamental elements of Christian identity.
00:13:22That's simply what it was.
00:13:23It was Christian identity and ideology.
00:13:25But what they did was they would tie religious doctrines and...
00:13:30biblical passages from the Bible to those ideologies to make it sound like religion.
00:13:35So that's what I grew up with.
00:13:37You know, these ideas are so entrenched.
00:13:40And so ingrained that...
00:13:45I had in high school, I had the DC talk...
00:13:50voice of the martyrs devotional.
00:13:52And it was one of these books that I was...
00:13:55engaging because I thought I would be martyred by the time I was 23.
00:14:00And looked forward to that.
00:14:01And I recently found it.
00:14:03And one of the questions...
00:14:05questions was...
00:14:06who are the people that are hardest for you to love?
00:14:10And...
00:14:10I filled this out when I was 14 or 15.
00:14:12And I wrote Mexicans.
00:14:15And I did not even personally know a Mexican...
00:14:2014 or 15 years old.
00:14:21It was all the xenophobic rhetoric I had...
00:14:25heard growing up of...
00:14:27quote-unquote...
00:14:28illegals coming into our country.
00:14:30And how enraged people were that there were Spanish...
00:14:35Spanish signs in Walmart on the aisles.
00:14:37And how this was America.
00:14:38And we should speak English.
00:14:40All while...
00:14:42being so supportive of me going to...
00:14:45Tijuana on a missions trip during Christmas...
00:14:50break.
00:14:51And that's why I think thinking of it as cast...
00:14:54is so important.
00:14:55Because it is this sense of...
00:14:58it's okay to go...
00:15:00over there and help them over there.
00:15:03But we actually don't want to disrupt...
00:15:05the system that questions...
00:15:07why are those in the global south or...
00:15:10in these other countries...
00:15:11or in our country...
00:15:13struggling...
00:15:14because of...
00:15:15the history of...
00:15:17exploitation...
00:15:18and capitalism.
00:15:20and...
00:15:21what I think is really important...
00:15:22is that...
00:15:23white supremacy...
00:15:24wouldn't...
00:15:25actually exist without...
00:15:26Christian supremacy...
00:15:28that...
00:15:29that slavery...
00:15:30was justified...
00:15:31by saying...
00:15:32that the only people...
00:15:33God ordained...
00:15:34to own...
00:15:35people...
00:15:36and properties...
00:15:37originally were...
00:15:38quote-unquote...
00:15:39Christians...
00:15:40and then...
00:15:41when enslaved...
00:15:42black people...
00:15:43started converting...
00:15:44to Christianity...
00:15:45there became...
00:15:46this conundrum...
00:15:47well...
00:15:48we actually...
00:15:49didn't mean...
00:15:50that black people...
00:15:50could own...
00:15:51people...
00:15:52and property...
00:15:53so...
00:15:54it wasn't until...
00:15:55that you actually...
00:15:56started to see...
00:15:57the word...
00:15:58white...
00:15:59in legal documents...
00:16:00that they...
00:16:00that it used to be...
00:16:01Christian...
00:16:02but they actually...
00:16:03transformed it...
00:16:04to say...
00:16:05white...
00:16:06Christian people...
00:16:07were ordained...
00:16:08by God...
00:16:09because it was...
00:16:10there was always...
00:16:11this sense of...
00:16:12again...
00:16:13those with less...
00:16:14melanin...
00:16:15were...
00:16:16quote-unquote...
00:16:15ordained...
00:16:16or called...
00:16:17or chosen...
00:16:18or fill in the blank...
00:16:19to be on top...
00:16:20and I think...
00:16:21that that's why...
00:16:22missions...
00:16:23is...
00:16:24is...
00:16:25tricky...
00:16:26and organizations...
00:16:27like YWAM...
00:16:28are tricky...
00:16:29because...
00:16:30someone like me...
00:16:31and say...
00:16:32well...
00:16:33Jenny's going to...
00:16:34live in Africa...
00:16:35so of course...
00:16:35loves people of color...
00:16:36or she doesn't have...
00:16:37a problem with...
00:16:38black people...
00:16:39but I was still...
00:16:40staying within...
00:16:41the racial...
00:16:42and gendered...
00:16:43expectations...
00:16:44of purity culture...
00:16:45and I...
00:16:45when I was still...
00:16:46preaching...
00:16:47in front of...
00:16:48hundreds of people...
00:16:49in Uganda...
00:16:50when I...
00:16:50sure...
00:16:51well knew...
00:16:52I would not be...
00:16:53allowed to preach...
00:16:54in front of...
00:16:55hundreds of people...
00:16:56in the United States...
00:16:55if they were white...
00:16:56and I...
00:16:57and so...
00:16:58this part of me...
00:16:59even if I didn't...
00:17:00consciously...
00:17:01know it...
00:17:02I was already...
00:17:03enacting...
00:17:04the white supremacy...
00:17:05in my body...
00:17:06that said...
00:17:07I have a problem...
00:17:08with...
00:17:09Mexicans...
00:17:10for...
00:17:11whatever reason...
00:17:10and...
00:17:11I have...
00:17:12no problem...
00:17:13assuming positions...
00:17:14of authority...
00:17:15in...
00:17:15communities...
00:17:16that I know...
00:17:17I wouldn't have...
00:17:18that authority of...
00:17:19if they were...
00:17:20white communities...
00:17:20and that's been a battle...
00:17:21throughout...
00:17:22Pentecostalism...
00:17:23you can look back...
00:17:24at the histories...
00:17:25there...
00:17:26are different groups...
00:17:27that splintered off...
00:17:28of Pentecostalism...
00:17:29that...
00:17:30because...
00:17:31they did not want...
00:17:32black people...
00:17:33to be preaching...
00:17:34to white people...
00:17:35they would create...
00:17:36a separate sect...
00:17:37and...
00:17:38that sect would...
00:17:39grow predominantly...
00:17:40black...
00:17:40assemblies of God...
00:17:41was created...
00:17:42I believe...
00:17:43to...
00:17:44for the white people...
00:17:45to be in charge...
00:17:45and...
00:17:46I...
00:17:47it's...
00:17:48well into...
00:17:49the 2000s...
00:17:50some of these denominations...
00:17:51still...
00:17:52maintain that same...
00:17:53order of...
00:17:54white supremacy...
00:17:55if you look through...
00:17:57the magazines...
00:17:58that are published...
00:17:59as the movement...
00:18:00is...
00:18:01developing into...
00:18:02what would become...
00:18:03the charismatic movement...
00:18:04it's predominantly white...
00:18:05white...
00:18:06you look at...
00:18:07the different...
00:18:08missionaries...
00:18:09that are going overseas...
00:18:10they're almost all...
00:18:10white...
00:18:11and then...
00:18:12if you look at...
00:18:13the people...
00:18:14that they choose...
00:18:15for the photo ops...
00:18:16who are...
00:18:15on the other side...
00:18:17it's usually...
00:18:18the white guys...
00:18:19who are in leadership...
00:18:20and...
00:18:21they may do...
00:18:22a photo opportunity...
00:18:23with somebody...
00:18:24who's really poor...
00:18:25black skin...
00:18:26either...
00:18:27they're black...
00:18:28or Jew...
00:18:29or whatever they are...
00:18:30they...
00:18:30generally...
00:18:31just a photo op...
00:18:32that's all they are...
00:18:33and...
00:18:34when I began...
00:18:35also noticing...
00:18:36that...
00:18:37you know...
00:18:38from my history...
00:18:39this is a very racist...
00:18:40ideology...
00:18:41that's coming...
00:18:42forward...
00:18:43this is...
00:18:44I had no idea...
00:18:45that I was...
00:18:45a movement...
00:18:46that was created...
00:18:47literally...
00:18:48by the Ku Klux Klan...
00:18:49I was...
00:18:50but then...
00:18:51to watch all...
00:18:52look at all those photos...
00:18:53and...
00:18:54watch the videos...
00:18:55and...
00:18:56start to see...
00:18:57it's almost all...
00:18:55white people...
00:18:56this doesn't make...
00:18:57any sense...
00:18:58why is it like this...
00:18:59because...
00:19:00the argument...
00:19:01well...
00:19:02there's just simply...
00:19:03more white people...
00:19:04in leadership...
00:19:05the history...
00:19:06and...
00:19:07you look at the numbers...
00:19:08that is not true...
00:19:09it's just that...
00:19:10they had pushed...
00:19:10black people aside...
00:19:11and...
00:19:12we're a different movement...
00:19:13they're in their own movement...
00:19:14now...
00:19:15culturally...
00:19:16I've studied this too...
00:19:18I've studied things to...
00:19:19no end...
00:19:20because...
00:19:21there's...
00:19:22there's just so much to understand...
00:19:23with regards to culture...
00:19:24politics...
00:19:25religion...
00:19:25etc...
00:19:26in the south...
00:19:27there were laws...
00:19:28that existed...
00:19:29well...
00:19:30whenever you would believe...
00:19:32that...
00:19:33churches would become...
00:19:34integrated...
00:19:35where the laws...
00:19:36actually prevented...
00:19:37gatherings...
00:19:38with...
00:19:39so many people...
00:19:40that are...
00:19:40black...
00:19:41and...
00:19:42so many people...
00:19:43that are white...
00:19:44you had...
00:19:45the population...
00:19:46how much...
00:19:47could come together...
00:19:48it's got really weird...
00:19:49in some states...
00:19:50regions...
00:19:51so...
00:19:52in the south...
00:19:53there were...
00:19:54limitations...
00:19:55having...
00:19:56ministries...
00:19:57that...
00:19:58had a black...
00:19:59person...
00:20:00a body...
00:20:01of white...
00:20:02people...
00:20:03when those laws...
00:20:04begin to disappear...
00:20:05however...
00:20:05because...
00:20:06this movement...
00:20:07had developed...
00:20:08with...
00:20:09the racial background...
00:20:10many of them...
00:20:10continued...
00:20:11because...
00:20:12they did not want...
00:20:13to offend...
00:20:14the other people...
00:20:15who were...
00:20:15truly...
00:20:16racist...
00:20:17in other words...
00:20:18the movement...
00:20:19was developing...
00:20:20where...
00:20:21racism...
00:20:22should have...
00:20:23stopped...
00:20:24but...
00:20:25accused...
00:20:26of people...
00:20:27in the movement...
00:20:28so...
00:20:29as this thing...
00:20:30in the 60s...
00:20:3170s...
00:20:32you're still seeing...
00:20:33predominantly...
00:20:34white people...
00:20:35behind the movement...
00:20:35there are just a...
00:20:36handful of names...
00:20:37that I can think of...
00:20:38that were black...
00:20:39as the movement...
00:20:40was developing...
00:20:40I can't think of...
00:20:41one single Jew...
00:20:42but...
00:20:43Jewish people...
00:20:44are of the Jewish...
00:20:45religion...
00:20:46Jewish faith...
00:20:47so...
00:20:48they're also...
00:20:49separated from this...
00:20:50and spreading...
00:20:51it is spreading...
00:20:52predominantly...
00:20:53white...
00:20:54those missionaries...
00:20:55go out to...
00:20:56other countries...
00:20:57and...
00:20:58it's...
00:20:59it's really odd...
00:21:00because...
00:21:00you've...
00:21:01you've made this point...
00:21:02and I...
00:21:03I want to stress it...
00:21:04in this podcast...
00:21:05when you're white...
00:21:06and you go to a...
00:21:07developing nation...
00:21:08that is...
00:21:09mostly black...
00:21:10when they see a white...
00:21:11person come...
00:21:12they see something...
00:21:13different...
00:21:14visually...
00:21:15they see somebody...
00:21:16who's coming...
00:21:17who's wealthy...
00:21:18who has plenty of food...
00:21:19who has a way of teaching them...
00:21:20how to...
00:21:20grow food...
00:21:21how to...
00:21:22how to survive...
00:21:23they see somebody...
00:21:24who is...
00:21:25superior...
00:21:26here's where...
00:21:28this podcast...
00:21:29interests me...
00:21:30relates to youth...
00:21:31with a mission...
00:21:32I can understand...
00:21:33as an adult...
00:21:34this is...
00:21:35this is problematic...
00:21:36you come...
00:21:37and you start to see...
00:21:38this thing happening...
00:21:39where...
00:21:40people are...
00:21:40starting to respect you...
00:21:41just simply...
00:21:42for your skin color...
00:21:43to an adult...
00:21:44you see it...
00:21:45you're a little bit...
00:21:46aghast...
00:21:47I don't want to be...
00:21:48thought of this way...
00:21:49this is really...
00:21:50this is offensive...
00:21:50but...
00:21:51to a child...
00:21:52how do you...
00:21:53separate this...
00:21:54because a child...
00:21:55understand...
00:21:56all of these things...
00:21:57they don't know the background...
00:21:58of history...
00:21:59culture...
00:22:00etc...
00:22:00how did that affect...
00:22:01the children...
00:22:02whenever you're in...
00:22:03youth with a mission...
00:22:04yeah...
00:22:05I think it's a great...
00:22:05great question...
00:22:06I think...
00:22:07you know...
00:22:08I was thinking...
00:22:09as you were talking...
00:22:10through...
00:22:10I spent...
00:22:11the better part...
00:22:12of seven years...
00:22:13involved...
00:22:14and on staff...
00:22:15with...
00:22:15IWAM...
00:22:16in various...
00:22:17states...
00:22:18and countries...
00:22:19a lot...
00:22:20over...
00:22:20Africa...
00:22:21and I think...
00:22:22I can think of...
00:22:23maybe one...
00:22:24base leader...
00:22:25that was...
00:22:25a person of color...
00:22:26and other than that...
00:22:27even in...
00:22:28Uganda...
00:22:29and even in...
00:22:30other countries...
00:22:31it was always...
00:22:32white bodies...
00:22:33from...
00:22:34England...
00:22:35or...
00:22:35America...
00:22:36usually...
00:22:37that moved...
00:22:38there...
00:22:39to...
00:22:40take on...
00:22:41those...
00:22:42mantles...
00:22:40of...
00:22:41power...
00:22:42and...
00:22:43I think...
00:22:44it often...
00:22:45created...
00:22:46unquestioned...
00:22:47and...
00:22:48I think...
00:22:49it often...
00:22:50created...
00:22:50there's this...
00:22:51this phrase...
00:22:52third culture kid...
00:22:53where there's a lot...
00:22:54of...
00:22:55confusion...
00:22:56for...
00:22:57kids who grow up...
00:22:58on the mission field...
00:22:59where it's actually...
00:23:00not...
00:23:00their...
00:23:01their culture...
00:23:02by heritage...
00:23:03but it's the culture...
00:23:04they live...
00:23:05and so there's...
00:23:05always...
00:23:06this feeling...
00:23:07of...
00:23:08displacement...
00:23:09and...
00:23:10a feeling...
00:23:10I don't belong...
00:23:11but also...
00:23:12I'm in a position...
00:23:13of...
00:23:14power...
00:23:15and...
00:23:16and I think...
00:23:15that in itself...
00:23:16tends to then...
00:23:17breed...
00:23:18these isolations...
00:23:19and...
00:23:20and it becomes...
00:23:20this...
00:23:21funnel...
00:23:22as we've been...
00:23:23talking about...
00:23:24where it becomes...
00:23:25these insular...
00:23:26worlds...
00:23:27because you...
00:23:28sense that...
00:23:29nobody outside...
00:23:30they will...
00:23:31understand you...
00:23:32and...
00:23:33I think...
00:23:34it also...
00:23:35further...
00:23:35traumatizing...
00:23:36and...
00:23:37confusing...
00:23:38when we talk about...
00:23:39spiritual warfare...
00:23:40I...
00:23:40I think about it like...
00:23:41if you've had...
00:23:42glasses...
00:23:43that are like...
00:23:43a certain color...
00:23:44and you put...
00:23:45it on and the world's all that color so like if we imagine putting on our white suppression
00:23:50and see glasses and being like let's just see how we actually see the world if we look
00:23:55at it through this lens so much of the spiritual warfare language
00:24:00is nations that are dark and and it it always seems to be
00:24:05correlated with melanin and the places that are the most dark tend to be
00:24:10nations that have people of color and jesus is this white bright
00:24:15pure person and so there's there's always this internalized
00:24:20of darkness of other of um these things
00:24:25that are uh really um different from how people have lived with
00:24:30nature and seasons and not
00:24:35living in duality in many parts of the world but it really creates this uh bind
00:24:40of this system and what i think that does for folks
00:24:45who grew up in white bodies in these world
00:24:47is similar to what we were talking about last
00:24:50last time i think it produces chronic shame because you are
00:24:55from the beginning set up as a trope you are the good one because you're white
00:25:00white you are called by god you are holy so you better not throw a temper tantrum
00:25:05you better not you know have these things that normal kids or normal humans have
00:25:10and if we don't live in an environment where our true authentic self
00:25:15self can be seen and validated and empathized with we will
00:25:19and
00:25:20inevitably develop a really strong sense of shame there is something so
00:25:25wrong with me and we will split off those parts of ourselves that we have
00:25:30learned are quote-unquote dark or bad or sinful and so we'll either
00:25:35kind of project ourselves into these better bigger than life versions
00:25:40where we're like the superstar missionary or and both maybe
00:25:45maybe we implode into systems of into cycles of self
00:25:50harm because we feel so bad about just our very existence and who
00:25:55we are i think it's incredibly damaging for children you just mentioned
00:26:00something that i've been trying to put into words and have not yet been able to i think you did
00:26:05there are things that exist in
00:26:10there are things that exist in the religious world today especially the charismatic world
00:26:14that only
00:26:15exist because of this racist history and it isn't that the people who are
00:26:20doing it are racist it isn't that they are targeting black people
00:26:25or
00:26:26there's no hate behind it it's just simply part of the development
00:26:30of the religion as it related to the ideology and exactly what
00:26:35you said you go into africa that's where the demons lie we would hear i listened to recording
00:26:40things at branham growing up he had recorded sermons from 1947 and 19
00:26:451665 church for us as we would go into a building and the minister
00:26:50and the minister would say okay brother harold play the tape whoever harold is and
00:26:55um
00:26:56they play the tape and then we would all sit and listen to this sermon that was during
00:27:00the years of all of these racist um demonstrations of the
00:27:05politics we don't even understand
00:27:06politics we don't even understand
00:27:10and we don't even really recognize the events until you start to put
00:27:15together to a timeline here's the sermon here's the what was happening in politics and the
00:27:20world we start to see all of this if you put it into a timeline but
00:27:25i i began to have that same exact thought they would often talk about
00:27:30and that's where the demons are and so you
00:27:35you get this mental image of everybody worshiping demons in africa which isn't
00:27:40the case i have friends from africa and you get the also the idea that
00:27:45everybody's primitive it's a primitive culture which is partially true
00:27:50especially during the years he was preaching but it wasn't as true as it was made up
00:27:55for the men who werecloudives and 15 evidents coapped cars across the world
00:27:56but i played it out to be a controversial
00:27:57but i played it out to be while he was preaching but the thought hit me
00:28:00If you were to, like you said, if you were to have some glasses that just took color away from everything,
00:28:05watch how differently this looks.
00:28:07What about the Native Americans?
00:28:10Is that would not the same spiritual warfare apply here, but these people go on.
00:28:15This like you with a mission, they're going on the mission, because that's where the demons lie.
00:28:20Where is youth with a mission going in to treat the demons that are in the.
00:28:25Native American cultures, right?
00:28:27It should be the same thing, but we view Africa.
00:28:30Africa is entirely different because of this ideology and it's planting.
00:28:35Into the children's minds, the idea you're there's association that happens there.
00:28:40So I'm using the word children purposefully.
00:28:44Whenever.
00:28:45Whenever I started to learn history, I was in high school, I'm learning history.
00:28:50And I'm understanding the basics of culture.
00:28:53It wasn't until really my third.
00:28:55Think shuts my heart.
00:28:56Have I here in theji and your pilot have kept becomingini.
00:28:57Netting
00:29:10that makes it less sustainable.
00:29:13Without going forward, We'll let my heart out.
00:29:14There is a share of the, we'll let the people around the world and our children and our children
00:29:20have kept redistribuzz.
00:29:22We'll let them both다는 iz mayo as well.
00:29:23In the next movie, it was holy.
00:29:24And you begin to associate that with the color of the skin naturally because you're in Africa
00:29:29which is predominantly black people.
00:29:31So for me, when I see this,
00:29:34this whole setup like Youth With A Mission,
00:29:38the entire
00:29:39establishment doesn't make sense to me.
00:29:41Why are there not the same missions happening here?
00:29:44I know of one YWAM base.
00:29:48There may be
00:29:49more that is on a reservation in Montana.
00:29:54But
00:29:54it isn't
00:29:55it doesn't get the same airtime that going to
00:29:59the 1040 window or Africa does certainly.
00:30:03And
00:30:04to me,
00:30:05my understanding of that is that that is because
00:30:09unfortunately,
00:30:10in the membrane of the US,
00:30:12historically,
00:30:14we have done such a good job segregating indigenous people that they are
00:30:19not, quote unquote,
00:30:20a threat in the same way that black people
00:30:24during desegregation became.
00:30:26And so there was this there was
00:30:29more overt forms of racism against black bodies, but of course,
00:30:34with indigenous residential schools and the murder.
00:30:39and removal of indigenous people from their lands since the inception of the United States.
00:30:44that has existed, but it's taken on a different form.
00:30:48And I think it is
00:30:49because of that that sense of keeping the bloodlines pure and
00:30:54this is why I think focusing on purity culture.
00:30:57That's why I do so much of that in my
00:30:59work in that it is often around the trope of protecting
00:31:04young white women.
00:31:05And really what that is,
00:31:07is
00:31:09a signal for keeping the races pure.
00:31:12You know,
00:31:13the
00:31:14the
00:31:14the
00:31:151915
00:31:16clan movement had the momentum that it did.
00:31:19because the very first Hollywood movie,
00:31:22the birth of a nation show.
00:31:24showed white men in blackface sexually assaulting a white woman and
00:31:28and there became this frenzy and this stereotype of
00:31:33the oversexual black man and often it was
00:31:38used as justification for burning down entire towns like Rosewood.
00:31:43That we're in quote-unquote the defense of the innocence of a white.
00:31:48And so I think it plays out differently because it really is
00:31:53who is in this world who is considered a threat to
00:31:58white bodies staying on top and being superior.
00:32:03And I think part of the reason that...
00:32:08So many missionaries are sent to places like Africa now is it's...
00:32:13This soft power of empire setting up...
00:32:18So many missionaries end up creating businesses.
00:32:23Where they hire Ugandan women for very little money to make jewelry.
00:32:28And then come back to the United States and sell that jewelry for hundreds of dollars.
00:32:33Or various things that you see that continue to keep this...
00:32:38Cast in place of who gets to have access to the levers of power.
00:32:43And who doesn't?
00:32:45Have you ever wondered how the Pentecostal movement...
00:32:48started?
00:32:49Or how the progression of modern Pentecostalism transitioned through the...
00:32:53latter reign, charismatic, and other fringe movements into the new apostolic reformation.

00:33:39On behalf of William Branham Historical Research...
00:33:42we want to...
00:33:43thank you for your support.
00:33:44The other thing that goes with this...
00:33:47whenever the...
00:33:48ladder rain movement was spreading...
00:33:50and it turned into the worldwide...
00:33:52they call it the world...
00:33:53the worldwide revival.
00:33:54They would often go into countries like this...
00:33:57because the photo operation...
00:33:58opportunities were significant.
00:33:59If you were to go into one of these nations...
00:34:01and say...
00:34:02well...
00:34:03hey...
00:34:04we're going to have dinner on the ground...
00:34:05we're going to have free food...
00:34:06come...
00:34:07you would have people buy the busload.
00:34:08that's coming.
00:34:09I mean...
00:34:10that's the way...
00:34:11it is in a developing nation...
00:34:12or a poor country.
00:34:13So...
00:34:13whenever you see these massive crowds...
00:34:16you're seeing the result of...
00:34:18what...
00:34:19led to the marketing that drew those crowds...
00:34:21you're not seeing the actuality of what...
00:34:23what was going on behind the scenes...
00:34:25and a lot of that has to do...
00:34:26just simply with the...
00:34:28overall wealth of the nation...
00:34:29that they're going into...
00:34:31but...
00:34:32the photo...
00:34:33the photo opportunities...
00:34:34were really what drove the movement...
00:34:36if you can get a...
00:34:37large gathering...
00:34:38of people...
00:34:39and say that you're healing them...
00:34:40and...
00:34:41you know...
00:34:42maybe some people did...
00:34:43get healed...
00:34:44but...
00:34:45we've examined many cases...
00:34:46where they would claim that it happened...
00:34:47and it didn't.
00:34:48but...
00:34:49the photo opportunity...
00:34:50brought enough people together...
00:34:52that you can...
00:34:53post it on magazines...
00:34:54now...
00:34:55you can start printing...
00:34:56and distributing it...
00:34:57people...
00:34:58started seeing this as...
00:35:00this is the spreading of the gospel...
00:35:02the gospel is going out to...
00:35:03the entire world...
00:35:04and then the end of days happens...
00:35:06so along with this association...
00:35:08of race...
00:35:09and culture...
00:35:10and...
00:35:11the demons that are hiding...
00:35:12under the skin color...
00:35:13you also have...
00:35:14this association to it...
00:35:15with the end of days theology...
00:35:18that also...
00:35:19when you combine all of this...
00:35:20with your ideology...
00:35:21as you're forming an ideology...
00:35:23you're starting to associate...
00:35:25the darker skin...
00:35:26with the end of days...
00:35:27which is...
00:35:28also problematic...
00:35:29I did this to a limited extent...
00:35:32I was not aware...
00:35:33of how racist...
00:35:34I was supposed to be...
00:35:35when I was in the religion...
00:35:36had no idea...
00:35:37of many of the things...
00:35:38in fact...
00:35:39in high school...
00:35:40many of my close friends...
00:35:41closest friends...
00:35:42were black people...
00:35:43I just had no idea...
00:35:45but...
00:35:46to a person...
00:35:47who is starting to...
00:35:48associate those things...
00:35:49in their mind...
00:35:50with their ideology...
00:35:51you can't help...
00:35:52but...
00:35:53draw links like this...
00:35:54draw conclusions like this...
00:35:56and honestly...
00:35:57if you study the...
00:35:58history of how this ideology...
00:35:59began to grow...
00:36:00and spread...
00:36:01it was mostly because...
00:36:02of that exact...
00:36:03you started to see...
00:36:05the separation of...
00:36:06it's a visual difference...
00:36:07right...
00:36:08you're starting to see...
00:36:09the separation...
00:36:10because of skin color...
00:36:11so...
00:36:12having people...
00:36:13younger...
00:36:14who are going...
00:36:15on these missions...
00:36:16and not having...
00:36:17the proper grounding...
00:36:18in history...
00:36:19and culture...
00:36:20not having leadership...
00:36:21that is very experienced...
00:36:22on how to deal with it...
00:36:23like this...
00:36:24for me...
00:36:25I see this as a huge...
00:36:26huge problem...
00:36:27absolutely...
00:36:28yeah...
00:36:28I...
00:36:29as you're saying that...
00:36:30I remember...
00:36:31it was...
00:36:32a conscious...
00:36:33thought for me...
00:36:34often...
00:36:35when I was preaching...
00:36:36in Uganda...
00:36:37where I would be like...
00:36:38what if this is the...
00:36:38last group...
00:36:39to have never heard of Jesus...
00:36:40and like...
00:36:41me preaching this...
00:36:42is going to make...
00:36:43him come back...
00:36:44and it was...
00:36:45one...
00:36:46just really grandiose...
00:36:47thinking...
00:36:48and also...
00:36:50you know...
00:36:51Jesus has existed...
00:36:52in Uganda...
00:36:53for centuries...
00:36:54Ugandans...
00:36:55don't need...
00:36:56people to tell them...
00:36:57who Jesus is...
00:36:58but...
00:37:00the...
00:37:01and...
00:37:02you know...
00:37:03and many times...
00:37:04similar to...
00:37:03healing...
00:37:04it was like...
00:37:05oh...
00:37:06these 500 people...
00:37:07got saved...
00:37:08and then you come back...
00:37:09the next week...
00:37:08and those same...
00:37:09500 people...
00:37:10get saved...
00:37:11and...
00:37:12it really pulls...
00:37:13into question...
00:37:14the issue...
00:37:15of consent...
00:37:16it...
00:37:17you know...
00:37:18because...
00:37:18of centuries...
00:37:19of...
00:37:20the...
00:37:21under development...
00:37:22of Africa...
00:37:23there is a necessity...
00:37:25for...
00:37:26um...
00:37:27the missionary...
00:37:28industrial...
00:37:28complex...
00:37:29or...
00:37:30these various ways...
00:37:31in which...
00:37:32nonprofits...
00:37:33bring...
00:37:33things...
00:37:34that are...
00:37:35necessary...
00:37:36um...
00:37:37because...
00:37:38of...
00:37:38the...
00:37:39problem...
00:37:40that...
00:37:41our...
00:37:42countries...
00:37:43created...
00:37:44in the first place...
00:37:45and so...
00:37:46if...
00:37:47you're gonna say...
00:37:48to...
00:37:49come...
00:37:50get saved...
00:37:51and have a meal...
00:37:52and then...
00:37:53and then...
00:37:54the cycle...
00:37:53just...
00:37:54has to...
00:37:55continue...
00:37:56it's just...
00:37:57it...
00:37:58it's a snake...
00:37:59that just...
00:38:00begins...
00:38:01to eat...
00:38:02its own...
00:38:03if I can add...
00:38:04one more thing...
00:38:05this is a little tangent...
00:38:06but I keep thinking about...
00:38:07um...
00:38:08as you share...
00:38:08you're like...
00:38:09I didn't know...
00:38:10how racist I was supposed to be...
00:38:11you're like...
00:38:12these people...
00:38:13might not know the history...
00:38:13I think that...
00:38:14that's so important...
00:38:15because...
00:38:16um...
00:38:17I...
00:38:18for me...
00:38:19personally...
00:38:20I grew up...
00:38:21I was homeschooled...
00:38:22and...
00:38:23if you would've...
00:38:24asked my parents...
00:38:25is that so that...
00:38:26Jenny didn't spend time...
00:38:27around black kids...
00:38:28they would've said no...
00:38:29but if you look at...
00:38:30the history...
00:38:31of the homeschool movement...
00:38:33in...
00:38:34evangelical Christianity...
00:38:35it was a direct...
00:38:37outbirth...
00:38:38of desegregation...
00:38:39and as soon as...
00:38:40white and black students...
00:38:42started coming together...
00:38:43there...
00:38:44there was the birth...
00:38:45of the homeschool movement...
00:38:46and training your children up...
00:38:47and...
00:38:48parental rights...
00:38:49and...
00:38:50and that is why...
00:38:51I'm so passionate...
00:38:52about this history...
00:38:53because it's like...
00:38:54once we put those glasses on...
00:38:55once we start to see it...
00:38:57it's so much...
00:38:58harder to unsee...
00:39:00but if this is our first time...
00:39:01looking at it...
00:39:02of course there's a...
00:39:03reaction...
00:39:04because we want to be like...
00:39:05I'm not racist...
00:39:06and that in itself...
00:39:07is part of...
00:39:08I think...
00:39:08how we've been socialized...
00:39:09like...
00:39:10we have to be the good...
00:39:11white person...
00:39:12and if I start to admit...
00:39:13that I...
00:39:14am not...
00:39:15perfect...
00:39:16or all good...
00:39:17or all pure...
00:39:18then that...
00:39:18interrupts...
00:39:19how...
00:39:20whiteness has actually...
00:39:21been really constraining...
00:39:22for me...
00:39:23like it's...
00:39:23given me privilege...
00:39:24but whiteness also harms...
00:39:25white bodies too...
00:39:26it's not that it's like...
00:39:28this loving...
00:39:29like embodied...
00:39:30thing...
00:39:31for white bodies...
00:39:32it actually does a lot of...
00:39:33damage...
00:39:34for everybody...
00:39:35that is trying to move...
00:39:36and navigate...
00:39:37through these systems...
00:39:38it does...
00:39:40and...
00:39:41it's funny...
00:39:42because you use the...
00:39:43glasses analogy...
00:39:44which I've used before...
00:39:45if you had glasses...
00:39:46where everybody looks...
00:39:47the same...
00:39:48and...
00:39:49try to put...
00:39:50all of this religion...
00:39:51and this ideology...
00:39:52into...
00:39:53to play...
00:39:54it really doesn't work...
00:39:55you just can't...
00:39:56you simply can't do it...
00:39:57for me...
00:39:58I had the opposite realization...
00:39:59like I said...
00:40:00I grew up not knowing...
00:40:01I was supposed to be like this...
00:40:02when I suddenly...
00:40:03learned that I was...
00:40:04I pretended to have...
00:40:05the glasses...
00:40:06that I didn't have...
00:40:07I started to...
00:40:08literally see...
00:40:09black people...
00:40:10or white people...
00:40:11even though I could...
00:40:12visually see them...
00:40:13all my life...
00:40:13I never thought of it...
00:40:14like that...
00:40:15except for the marriage...
00:40:17doctrine...
00:40:18that we had...
00:40:19we were taught...
00:40:20not to marry...
00:40:21but I didn't even see...
00:40:22that as racist...
00:40:23as we were taught...
00:40:25that...
00:40:26how did he put it...
00:40:27he said something like...
00:40:28God made big mountains...
00:40:29and little mountains...
00:40:30green valleys...
00:40:31and brown valleys...
00:40:32and he was trying to say...
00:40:33that God's creation...
00:40:34needs to stay...
00:40:35exactly the same...
00:40:36and I never really...
00:40:37thought back to...
00:40:38well...
00:40:39how does that work...
00:40:38that Adam and Eve...
00:40:39were the mother...
00:40:40and father of all living...
00:40:41it's all the same...
00:40:42it should be all the same...
00:40:43it wasn't until...
00:40:45I was doing...
00:40:46the revival history series...
00:40:47with Charles...
00:40:48which I...
00:40:49I mentioned this also...
00:40:50in the book...
00:40:51whenever white supremacy...
00:40:53mixed with...
00:40:54British Israel...
00:40:55British Israelism...
00:40:56and created...
00:40:57Christian identity...
00:40:58the two...
00:40:59two...
00:41:00bloodline doctrine...
00:41:01it had this...
00:41:02element...
00:41:03that...
00:41:04through the lineage of Ham...
00:41:06came the black...
00:41:07bloodline...
00:41:08that was a popular doctrine...
00:41:09in the...
00:41:1050s and 60s...
00:41:11and...
00:41:12the way that...
00:41:13they would trace the lineage...
00:41:14if you...
00:41:15read the Bible...
00:41:16and you trace the good guys...
00:41:17and bad guys...
00:41:18they would...
00:41:18always trace...
00:41:19the bad lineage...
00:41:20through that direction...
00:41:21through the...
00:41:22through the dark skin...
00:41:23so people were...
00:41:24taking that doctrine...
00:41:25and...
00:41:26running with it...
00:41:27in different ways...
00:41:28that was just really...
00:41:29offensive...
00:41:30now that I think about it...
00:41:31to the extent...
00:41:32we have...
00:41:33and I think you mentioned...
00:41:34that you had...
00:41:35encountered this too...
00:41:36we had churches...
00:41:37in...
00:41:38South Africa...
00:41:39where the black minister...
00:41:40would preach...
00:41:41that they were...
00:41:42they were...
00:41:43cursed...
00:41:44because they were black...
00:41:45and...
00:41:46that white people...
00:41:47should rule over them...
00:41:48I mean...
00:41:48hopefully they were...
00:41:49preaching this...
00:41:50but that's the ideology...
00:41:51that's what was being...
00:41:52spread...
00:41:53and...
00:41:54it's...
00:41:55whenever you look at...
00:41:56the...
00:41:57evangelical culture...
00:41:58because it is...
00:41:59developing through...
00:42:00the latter rain years...
00:42:01through the charismatic years...
00:42:02the early...
00:42:03form of the charismatic years...
00:42:04I should say...
00:42:05the ideology itself...
00:42:07was spreading...
00:42:08and that was the mission...
00:42:09that was why...
00:42:10you needed to go...
00:42:11and spread the gospel...
00:42:12you needed to...
00:42:13spread...
00:42:14literally spread the gospel...
00:42:15that you shouldn't marry...
00:42:16people who have...
00:42:17different skin than you...
00:42:18and...
00:42:19I'm...
00:42:20I'm not saying...
00:42:21that everybody in it...
00:42:22was racist...
00:42:23but there was a lot of that...
00:42:23going on in the movement...
00:42:24so that ideology...
00:42:25is clearly spreading...
00:42:26the fact that you're...
00:42:27seeing it...
00:42:28the fact that we have...
00:42:29ministers like this...
00:42:30and some of this...
00:42:31you can go into...
00:42:33other cults...
00:42:34that have emerged...
00:42:35from latter rain...
00:42:36and they also have...
00:42:37the same kind of ideology...
00:42:38yeah...
00:42:39I'm thinking of...
00:42:40James Dobson...
00:42:41said that...
00:42:43marrying across races...
00:42:45was being unequally yoked...
00:42:47and...
00:42:48I think there's just...
00:42:49so many different...
00:42:50verses...
00:42:51and justifications...
00:42:52that are...
00:42:53twisted...
00:42:54and used...
00:42:55for...
00:42:56maintaining...
00:42:57segregation...
00:42:58and...
00:42:59division...
00:43:00and...
00:43:01I really love...
00:43:02Rick Steves...
00:43:03and he says...
00:43:04it's hard to hate...
00:43:05up close...
00:43:06and...
00:43:07I think it's really...
00:43:08hard if you have...
00:43:09lived in these...
00:43:10insular worlds...
00:43:11or...
00:43:12even if you've...
00:43:13interacted...
00:43:13with people...
00:43:14that are different...
00:43:15but every time...
00:43:16you've interacted...
00:43:17with them...
00:43:18it's as a ministry...
00:43:19you're seeing...
00:43:18them as a project...
00:43:19you're seeing them...
00:43:20as something...
00:43:21that...
00:43:22is needing something...
00:43:23from you...
00:43:23there's...
00:43:25when there's not...
00:43:26a mutuality...
00:43:27and...
00:43:28a share...
00:43:28shared...
00:43:29respect...
00:43:30and...
00:43:31understanding...
00:43:32it...
00:43:33becomes a breeding ground...
00:43:33for stereotypes...
00:43:34and...
00:43:35me...
00:43:36as a 14-year-old...
00:43:37saying...
00:43:38that...
00:43:38I have a really hard time...
00:43:39loving Mexicans...
00:43:40even though...
00:43:41I don't have any...
00:43:42in my life...
00:43:43that's...
00:43:43such a...
00:43:44poignant example...
00:43:45I think...
00:43:46of...
00:43:47these worlds...
00:43:48that we're talking about...
00:43:48so fast forward...
00:43:49to the...
00:43:50birth...
00:43:51of what is called...
00:43:52the New Apostolic Reformation...
00:43:53if it can even...
00:43:54be called a birth...
00:43:55I think it literally...
00:43:56just put a brand name...
00:43:57on something...
00:43:58that...
00:43:58already established...
00:43:59St. Peter Wagner...
00:44:00was...
00:44:01strongly behind that...
00:44:02Youth with a Mission...
00:44:03definitely...
00:44:04is a component...
00:44:05to the...
00:44:06New Apostolic Reformation...
00:44:07Wagner...
00:44:08wrote a book...
00:44:09called...
00:44:10Our Kind of People...
00:44:11which is...
00:44:12one of...
00:44:13the most racist things...
00:44:13that you've ever read...
00:44:14but basically...
00:44:15it's describing...
00:44:16how...
00:44:17the...
00:44:18civil...
00:44:18rights movement...
00:44:19affected...
00:44:20the black churches...
00:44:21negatively...
00:44:22because it...
00:44:23was destroying...
00:44:24the culture...
00:44:25that separated...
00:44:26the blacks...
00:44:27from the whites...
00:44:28literally...
00:44:29that is the summary...
00:44:30of this book...
00:44:31he says...
00:44:32I'll read a quote...
00:44:33he says...
00:44:33a movement...
00:44:34called...
00:44:35caused...
00:44:36a distinct...
00:44:37change in attitude...
00:44:38of American blacks...
00:44:38towards their own...
00:44:39cultural values...
00:44:40in general...
00:44:41and towards their churches...
00:44:42in particular...
00:44:43what happened...
00:44:44to black churches...
00:44:45during the 60s...
00:44:46was not...
00:44:47unlike the process...
00:44:48of indigenation...
00:44:48that occurred...
00:44:49in scores...
00:44:50of cultures...
00:44:51around the world...
00:44:52where Christianity...
00:44:53has been introduced...
00:44:53so...
00:44:54this is coming...
00:44:55from a person...
00:44:56who's literally...
00:44:57some people...
00:44:58consider him...
00:44:59the father...
00:45:00of the new apostolic...
00:45:01reformation...
00:45:02even though...
00:45:03he simply...
00:45:04coined the term...
00:45:03but...
00:45:04he's very...
00:45:05fundamental...
00:45:06in what...
00:45:07would develop...
00:45:08into the new...
00:45:08apostolic reformation...
00:45:09especially...
00:45:10his work...
00:45:11with John...
00:45:12Wimber...
00:45:13spread...
00:45:14and explode...
00:45:15into...
00:45:16charismania...
00:45:17this was...
00:45:18at...
00:45:19point...
00:45:20he was...
00:45:21literally...
00:45:22trying...
00:45:23to...
00:45:24support...
00:45:25the idea...
00:45:26that black...
00:45:27people...
00:45:28needed...
00:45:29their own...
00:45:30culture...
00:45:31and...
00:45:32that black...
00:45:33people...
00:45:34needed...
00:45:35their own...
00:45:36culture...
00:45:37and...
00:45:38that black...
00:45:39was...
00:45:40communist...
00:45:41inspired...
00:45:42and...
00:45:43that he was...
00:45:44leading to...
00:45:44cause...
00:45:45a...
00:45:46holy...
00:45:47race...
00:45:48war...
00:45:49was...
00:45:50and...
00:45:51this ideology...
00:45:52was deep...
00:45:53so deeply rooted...
00:45:54in the movement...
00:45:54that people like Wagner...
00:45:55are carrying it forward...
00:45:56and...
00:45:57what's interesting about that is...
00:45:59if you were to read through...
00:46:00any...
00:46:01biography...
00:46:02or history...
00:46:03even the critical...
00:46:04histories of Wagner...
00:46:04most people...
00:46:05would not consider him...
00:46:06to be racist...
00:46:07but what he's building upon...
00:46:09is this ideology...
00:46:10that was...
00:46:11created...
00:46:12long...
00:46:13before him...
00:46:14this...
00:46:15component...
00:46:16and...
00:46:17he himself...
00:46:18has adopted it...
00:46:19racist...
00:46:20so...
00:46:21back to youth...
00:46:22with a mission...
00:46:23when you have...
00:46:24youth...
00:46:25who are in this...
00:46:26development...
00:46:27process...
00:46:28they're trying to develop...
00:46:29theology...
00:46:30and...
00:46:31they're given...
00:46:32this type of...
00:46:33background...
00:46:34to some of their...
00:46:34some of their...
00:46:35mission...
00:46:36you start to...
00:46:37wonder...
00:46:38how much of it...
00:46:39really came from...
00:46:40this racist...
00:46:41ideology...
00:46:42and...
00:46:43how much of it...
00:46:44how much of the mission...
00:46:45would even exist...
00:46:46if...
00:46:47this ideology...
00:46:48itself...
00:46:49had not existed...
00:46:49absolutely...
00:46:50I think about...
00:46:52um...
00:46:53Tema Oku...
00:46:54has...
00:46:55come up with...
00:46:56various things...
00:46:57that she calls...
00:46:58white supremacy...
00:46:59cultural norms...
00:47:00and...
00:47:01one of which...
00:47:02it's...
00:47:03sort of like...
00:47:04when you're...
00:47:04about...
00:47:05swimming through these waters...
00:47:06is...
00:47:07it's just what you...
00:47:08think...
00:47:09everything is...
00:47:10and then...
00:47:11again...
00:47:12you start to...
00:47:13see it...
00:47:14where...
00:47:15...
00:47:16what...
00:47:17.
00:47:18what...
00:47:20what...
00:47:21what...
00:47:22is...
00:47:23what...
00:47:24what...
00:47:25what...
00:47:27what...
00:47:29how...
00:47:30is that...
00:47:31what...
00:47:32what...
00:47:33more than you. And so I'm going to raise thousands of dollars and go
00:47:38across the ocean and step into your community and tell you the message
00:47:43that I think God has for you. And I think that will inevitably
00:47:48breed that sense of grandiosity that says you should
00:47:53go depart this message to God, to these people. They can't hear from
00:47:58the voice of God themselves, apparently. They need you to do this. I think
00:48:03absolutely. And I think it almost, whether it is conscious or not,
00:48:08the economics of it often becomes so self, uh,
00:48:13self-choosing because it is primarily white communities.
00:48:18That no people, they can call and say, Hey, I want to go on a missions trip.
00:48:21Can you send me a thousand dollars?
00:48:23The, the wealth disparity in the United States has made it so that
00:48:28generally speaking, that's going to be a lot harder in communities of color.
00:48:32So then you just,
00:48:33are going to naturally have more and more white people that are taking
00:48:38up these missional spaces and bringing these paternalistic messages to
00:48:43other communities.
00:48:44And you just hit the nail on the head that I was driving at.
00:48:48Can't hear the voice of God for themselves.
00:48:50So Christianity has spread all across the world.
00:48:53the globe and it did long before the Pentecostal movement existed.
00:48:58And Christianity was in the nations that they claim that they're going to do all
00:49:03the spiritual warfare.
00:49:04So if you believe that the Holy Spirit is the one,
00:49:08the one in charge and not the humans would you not then also believe that
00:49:13if the Holy Spirit is in the developing nations already through ministers that are preaching.
00:49:18that it could not be powerful enough to grow and spread the gospel within that nation.
00:49:23The ideology is such that no,
00:49:25the Holy Spirit is not in control.
00:49:26God is not in control.
00:49:28God is not in control.
00:49:29He has been in control.
00:49:30God is not in control.
00:49:31God is not in control.
00:49:32God is not in control.
00:49:33developing nation, yes, they may have Christian ministers, but the Christian
00:49:38ministers aren't powerful enough to convert the entire nation.
00:49:41We must do it.
00:49:42We must go.
00:49:43There because we're white, we can go over and have more dominance over the.
00:49:48People.
00:49:49I mean, literally that's what it comes down to.
00:49:50And you start to build this idea that.
00:49:53God is not in control.
00:49:54We have to do it.
00:49:55We have to do something that God can't do.
00:49:58When I look at youth with a mission and when I first encountered it, first off, I was
00:50:02asking.
00:50:03And the question is this a cult because, you know, I'm seeing this thing and it's so similar
00:50:08really problematic to many of the things that I grew up with.
00:50:13I was asking the question as a cult, but then that question didn't disturb me.
00:50:18So badly is what are they doing to the minds of the children?
00:50:22How are their.
00:50:23Minds going to develop when they're given this crippling setting?
00:50:28Instead of problematic doctrines that they're trying to this ideology that they have to.
00:50:33Go do this.
00:50:34None of it makes any sense.
00:50:36Not a single aspect of it makes any sense.
00:50:38I can understand a Christian missionary who is trying to do.
00:50:43Maybe go into a country that is poor.
00:50:48And the people are starving and they need food.
00:50:50Organize a mission to get them food.
00:50:52I can understand.
00:50:53I can understand this.
00:50:54I can understand any kind of humanitarian aid.
00:50:58But to try to overtake a country that already has Christianity in it and.
00:51:03Try to say that we need to forcibly go convert them.
00:51:06How is that different from the Spanish?
00:51:08Inquisition.
00:51:09None of it makes any sense.
00:51:11It doesn't.
00:51:12No.
00:51:13And it becomes these.
00:51:14It's often.
00:51:15It's.
00:51:16It's.
00:51:17It's often.
00:51:18It's often.
00:51:18not embedded in the community there's there are why we
00:51:23have a lot of places in Uganda that are acres and acres and acres and they have a
00:51:28high ropes course and they have their own garden and they have all of these things all for
00:51:33the base and and it's even my very first time
00:51:38in Uganda I kept thinking like why are people in Uganda if they don't actually want to spend time
00:51:42with Uganda
00:51:43where there was so many like insular communities
00:51:48that became these like little satellites of I would consider
00:51:53imperialism and bringing the ideology that um
00:51:58you know is is so part of these rhetorics and these movements
00:52:03and um yeah I don't I don't see it as separate from the
00:52:08long long long history of Christian supremacy
00:52:13colonizing the nation so you just hit the second nail on the head that I was trying
00:52:18to drive in so these youth go to these
00:52:23large camps sometimes they see people who are
00:52:28in the area who are Ugandans sometimes they don't but mostly they see
00:52:33each other and so they're mostly I mean there's no better way to say
00:52:38this this sounds like a children's indoctrination camp
00:52:41they're going so that they can be indoctrinated
00:52:43and they can come back so the mission is actually for the children themselves
00:52:48it's not so much about the outside world
00:52:50which again doesn't make any sense because why do
00:52:53that overseas unless you're trying to get the children away from their parents
00:52:58that's where for me this turns into a huge huge problem
00:53:01we have had I've
00:53:03investigated some of the children's indoctrination camp for the Branham cult
00:53:08and watching what happens when you can get a child away from their parent
00:53:11and then you can
00:53:13the children's nd the one and all who
00:53:15the children are
00:53:16that they can be
00:53:18I'm hearing from a child
00:53:18the person who's leading the camp, suddenly you can make
00:53:23the kid do anything that you want them to do, make them believe anything that you want
00:53:27them to believe.
00:53:28Because you've separated from their parent, they have no parental figure at that point.
00:53:33How long are the missions and how would you, would you agree that this sounds like indoctrination?
00:53:38Definitely.
00:53:39I mean, to be a part of YW.
00:53:43I'm to join staff or to do anything with YWAM, you are required to do what
00:53:48it's called a discipleship training school, which is a minimum of five months.
00:53:53And there are three months of what's called a lecture phase and then two months.
00:53:58And so during the three months of outreach, give or take.
00:54:03Three months of lecture phase, it is week after week after week of indoctrination.
00:54:08And it is highly, highly charismatic.
00:54:13Pentecostal services, you usually have a different guest speaker.
00:54:18Flying in from a different YWAM base each week from all over the world.
00:54:23And talking about that base and getting you excited about what that base is doing.
00:54:28And these weeks include hearing the voice of God and telling...
00:54:33Like training people what the voice of God sounds like or...
00:54:38There's like father heart of God, which often comes with people...
00:54:43...divulging their deepest, darkest traumas or secrets.
00:54:48And experiencing the love of God and these huge...
00:54:53...hudely emotionally charged weeks for three weeks and then you...
00:54:58...go on outreach for two months.
00:55:00So, I did my DTS discipleship training...
00:55:03...several months after I graduated high school.
00:55:06Like my parents had to help...
00:55:08...he helped me fill out the form saying like if I died on outreach...
00:55:11...they were responsible for getting my body...
00:55:13...back because I was 17 when I was applying to go.
00:55:17And then...
00:55:18...then my two months outreach...
00:55:20...one month was living in...
00:55:23...in Thailand in the red light district...
00:55:25...going into bars at night trying...
00:55:28...to talk to women to get them to come work at a business...
00:55:32...where they could make...
00:55:33...of jewelry...
00:55:34...where we no doubtedly caused more harm...
00:55:37...than...
00:55:38...we helped...
00:55:39...and there were several women that were beaten...
00:55:41...for talking to us.
00:55:43We had no business being there.
00:55:45It was incredibly traumatic for all of us.
00:55:48There was like, you know, a handful of 18, 19 year old men...
00:55:51...who are in a red light...
00:55:53...district being groped by women...
00:55:55...and reeling from that...
00:55:56...and trying to figure out what to do with that.
00:55:58And then our second month was in Malaysia...
00:56:01...Street Pride...
00:56:03...proselytizing in a Muslim country...
00:56:05...where it is illegal to proselytize.
00:56:08...and we could have been thrown in jail...
00:56:11...and I was still...
00:56:13...18 years old...
00:56:15...month out of high school...
00:56:17...and I...
00:56:18...absolutely consider it...
00:56:19...like...
00:56:20...this whole form of...
00:56:22...changing...
00:56:23...the way that you see the world...
00:56:24...the way that you see yourself...
00:56:26...in a very swift...
00:56:28...movement.
00:56:29And so by the time everyone comes back...
00:56:30...from their outreach...
00:56:31...they're already talking...
00:56:33...about what next school...
00:56:34...they're going to do with YWAM...
00:56:36...or where they're going to join staff.
00:56:38And it is...
00:56:39...it is very rare...
00:56:40...that people are like...
00:56:41...yep...
00:56:42...that was my five months...
00:56:43...I'm going back to go do normal life...
00:56:45...it is intentionally...
00:56:47...and...
00:56:48...brilliantly created...
00:56:49...to be this like...
00:56:51...mountaintop experience...
00:56:52...that is...
00:56:53...yes...
00:56:54...this is where God is...
00:56:55...I can step into these dangerous places...
00:56:57...and I have...
00:56:58...the protection of God...
00:56:59...and so I'm going to keep...
00:57:01...doing this...
00:57:02...and...
00:57:03...because of...
00:57:04...Seven Mountains mandate...
00:57:05...YWAM has...
00:57:06...schools...
00:57:07...literally...
00:57:08...designed...
00:57:09...for all of the different...
00:57:10...spheres of society...
00:57:11...so...
00:57:12...you would do a...
00:57:13...discipleship training school...
00:57:14...and then immediately...
00:57:15...before you finish that...
00:57:16...you're thinking about...
00:57:17...or even...
00:57:18...applying to the next school...
00:57:20...and it is this like...
00:57:21...salesperson tactic...
00:57:23...where...
00:57:23...your leaders are already like...
00:57:24...are you going to come back...
00:57:25...on staff...
00:57:26...you know the DTS starts...
00:57:27...in a couple months...
00:57:28...you could join...
00:57:28...you could lead a one-on-one...
00:57:29...and it's almost like...
00:57:30...this foot in the door...
00:57:31...where it's like...
00:57:32...well I've done a DTS...
00:57:33...I guess...
00:57:33...this is what I'm going to do...
00:57:34...for the next...
00:57:35...rest of my life...
00:57:37...so for those...
00:57:38...who couldn't see me...
00:57:39...because...
00:57:40...the camera was on Jenny...
00:57:42...I'm shaking my head...
00:57:43...and disbelief...
00:57:44...I'm like...
00:57:45...shocked...
00:57:46...that...
00:57:47...everything that you said...
00:57:48...I have no...
00:57:48...words...
00:57:49...I have literally no words...
00:57:50...and...
00:57:51...I'm looking back...
00:57:52...through the history...
00:57:53...of this movement...
00:57:54...in fact I was pulling up...
00:57:55...some...
00:57:56...some of my research...
00:57:57...while you were talking...
00:57:58...but...
00:57:59...when...
00:58:00...when the Lateran movement...
00:58:01...started to establish this idea...
00:58:03...of Joel's army...
00:58:04...the focus was on the youth...
00:58:06...and...
00:58:07...the past...
00:58:08...the message from Joel...
00:58:09...it says...
00:58:10...your sons and daughters...
00:58:11...shall prophesy...
00:58:12...your old man...
00:58:13...shall dream dreams...
00:58:13...pentecostalism had...
00:58:15...started to die out...
00:58:16...before 1947...
00:58:18...it existed...
00:58:19...but not nearly...
00:58:20...so widespread...
00:58:21...and popular...
00:58:22...as it was...
00:58:23...when...
00:58:23...the Azusa Street...
00:58:24...revival was happening...
00:58:25...so it started...
00:58:26...to tame down...
00:58:27...there was a lot...
00:58:28...of divisions...
00:58:29...and they saw...
00:58:30...this new thing...
00:58:31...as the ability...
00:58:32...to...
00:58:33...create...
00:58:34...Joel's army...
00:58:35...and what was...
00:58:36...Joel's army...
00:58:37...the early...
00:58:38...anacostals looked...
00:58:39...at Joel...
00:58:40...Joel 2...
00:58:41...and it said...
00:58:42...behold...
00:58:43...I will pour...
00:58:44...my spirit out...
00:58:43...on all flesh...
00:58:44...that's...
00:58:45...how they were...
00:58:46...trying to say...
00:58:47...that this is the...
00:58:48...the...
00:58:49...day of Pentecost...
00:58:50...is coming to us...
00:58:51...well...
00:58:52...the second iteration...
00:58:53...the third iteration...
00:58:54...of this...
00:58:55...the second iteration...
00:58:56...of this...
00:58:57...they were saying...
00:58:58...that your sons and daughters...
00:58:59...need to be the focus...
00:59:00...we need to...
00:59:01...we need to build...
00:59:02...this army of you...
00:59:03...tooth...
00:59:04...and so...
00:59:05...Joel's army...
00:59:06...became established...
00:59:07...Kansas City...
00:59:08...IHOP KC...
00:59:09...they're trying to do...
00:59:10...the same thing...
00:59:11...they're trying to get...
00:59:12...the children to a...
00:59:13...hyped...
00:59:13...emotionally charged...
00:59:15...religious frenzy...
00:59:16...so that they can...
00:59:17...fulfill this...
00:59:18...and now...
00:59:19...I'm looking at...
00:59:20...Youth with a Mission...
00:59:21...it...
00:59:22...bears...
00:59:23...all of the...
00:59:24...similarities...
00:59:25...to this...
00:59:26...creation of...
00:59:27...Joel's army...
00:59:28...they may not have...
00:59:29...taught it in doctrine...
00:59:30...I think you and I...
00:59:31...have talked a little bit...
00:59:32...about this...
00:59:33...the children may have no idea...
00:59:34...that that was even a doctrine...
00:59:35...fueling it...
00:59:36...but the idea was...
00:59:38...we need to create...
00:59:39...spiritual...
00:59:40...super soldiers...
00:59:41...that was the idea...
00:59:42...behind Joel's army...
00:59:43...and everything that you're...
00:59:44...telling me...
00:59:45...I'm starting to understand...
00:59:46...and piece together...
00:59:48...this was that...
00:59:49...this was trying to create...
00:59:51...it's a...
00:59:52...it's literally a mission...
00:59:53...for the children...
00:59:54...themselves...
00:59:55...we need to...
00:59:56...supercharge...
00:59:57...spiritual warriors...
00:59:58...they're going to...
00:59:59...grow up into adults...
01:00:00...to engage in...
01:00:01...spiritual warfare...
01:00:02...this is the...
01:00:03...this is the...
01:00:04...this is literally...
01:00:05...the training centers...
01:00:06...for the army...
01:00:07...yeah...
01:00:08...and I think...
01:00:08...other important part of it...
01:00:10...based on some things...
01:00:11...we've talked about already...
01:00:12...is that...
01:00:13...it's...
01:00:14...it's well known...
01:00:15...in almost any base...
01:00:16...I think I went to...
01:00:17...that YWAM...
01:00:18...they say that...
01:00:20...the acronym...
01:00:21...it really means...
01:00:22...young women...
01:00:23...after men...
01:00:24...and...
01:00:25...it is...
01:00:26...very rare...
01:00:27...that you will go...
01:00:28...through...
01:00:29...a five-month DTS...
01:00:30...and not have...
01:00:31...at least one marriage...
01:00:32...that will come out...
01:00:33...of it...
01:00:34...and...
01:00:35...and that is part...
01:00:36...of the system...
01:00:37...is you are...
01:00:38...are here to find...
01:00:39...a good godly mate...
01:00:40...I just like...
01:00:41...thank all things holy...
01:00:43...I did not get married...
01:00:44...in YWAM...
01:00:45...that would have made...
01:00:46...things a lot more...
01:00:47...complicated for me...
01:00:48...I think I was always...
01:00:49...a little bit too...
01:00:50...opinionated...
01:00:51...to fit into the...
01:00:53...YWAM wife...
01:00:54...model...
01:00:55...but...
01:00:56...but...
01:00:57...and then it is like...
01:00:58...okay well now you're married...
01:00:59...now you need to start...
01:01:00...having children...
01:01:01...and it is...
01:01:02...this sense of like...
01:01:03...that...
01:01:03...that's how you get...
01:01:04...so ingrained in it...
01:01:05...and literally people...
01:01:06...would tell me...
01:01:07...it's easier...
01:01:08...to fundraise...
01:01:09...when you have children...
01:01:10...if you're having...
01:01:11...a hard time...
01:01:12...raising money...
01:01:13...to be a missionary...
01:01:14...you should get married...
01:01:15...and have kids...
01:01:16...because people will be...
01:01:17...more likely to support you...
01:01:18...it's...
01:01:19...I believe...
01:01:20...like I'm...
01:01:21...I'm still...
01:01:22...I'm in a state of shock...
01:01:23...I can't believe it...
01:01:23...that this even exists...
01:01:24...this is dangerous...
01:01:25...this is not...
01:01:26...this is not something...
01:01:27...that...
01:01:28...that's healthy...
01:01:29...and I...
01:01:30...so much more...
01:01:31...I want to ask you...
01:01:32...and I want to probe your head...
01:01:33...it looks like we've...
01:01:34...we've already gone an hour...
01:01:35...I've...
01:01:36...as we're getting into this topic...
01:01:37...because it is my...
01:01:38...passion...
01:01:39...there's so many more things...
01:01:40...that I can say...
01:01:41...but we'll split it out...
01:01:42...into another podcast...
