00:00Protests continued in Minneapolis overnight following the weekend killing of Alex Prattie by an ICE officer.
00:07U.S. President Donald Trump has also shifted his tone with Democratic leaders in the state following conversations he had on Monday.
00:15White House officials, meanwhile, have been left scrambling as anger mounts following the killing of the second U.S. citizen in Minneapolis in a matter of weeks by ICE.
00:24For more on this story, we can go across to Fraser Jackson standing by in Washington.
00:29Fraser, what are you hearing about the administration's ICE operation now on the ground in Minneapolis?
00:38Well, the commander at large for Customs and Border Patrol is being removed from his post in Minneapolis and will be returning to California.
00:45This, of course, in the wake of the killing of ICU nurse Alex Prattie by Border Patrol officers on Saturday.
00:51The agency's commander then, Greg Bovino, he basically spent the weekend lashing out at critics on TV and online.
00:59In one interview with CNN, he said it was actually the Border Patrol agents who were the true victims in Saturday's shooting,
01:06something he also repeated online where he replied to many comments which led to Homeland Security officials removing his access to his social media accounts.
01:15That, again, according to CNN.
01:17Well, Bovino's claims that Prattie wanted to, quote, massacre law enforcement were, of course, undercut by the video evidence of the shooting that then came out online.
01:27And the White House pulled back from the heated rhetoric that other high-ranking officials have also engaged in.
01:32That includes the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, who called Prattie a domestic terrorist.
01:37Caroline Levitt on Monday said that the president hadn't characterized the 37-year-old nurse for veterans in the same way
01:44and tried instead to speak about what the White House says is an alleged fraud scandal,
01:51which was a key reason for the federal deployment of Minnesota in the first place.
01:55But allegedly Trump is not happy with what is happening in Minnesota and the optics of what's happening in Minnesota.
02:03And now he's starting to shift his stance on the deployment of federal officers there slightly,
02:09sending his Bordazar Tom Homan to the region.
02:13He will be landing there today and will be meeting with local law enforcement.
02:17He is seen as somebody who is a moderating force, a career immigration official,
02:22and somebody who will act as a linchpin between the government and the state and local officials there on the ground in Minneapolis.
02:31Frasier, just yesterday we had the U.S. president who posted on Truth Social that he had great conversations
02:37with Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey.
02:43What happened? What changed?
02:46Because just a couple of days ago he said these were officials who couldn't run the state.
02:51Yeah, well, Trump has been on those calls with both Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey
02:58and also Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who said that he asked Trump to end the immigration enforcement surge in the city.
03:06Jacob Frey said that Trump agreed with him that the present situation cannot continue,
03:11which of course means that Bovino will now depart the Twin Cities,
03:15with other agents also being stood down in the area.
03:18There are currently around 3,000 federal officers deployed in Minneapolis.
03:23That, though, outnumbering local police there by over 3 to 1,
03:26which is what prompted Tim Walz to call the state's National Guard in to help keep the peace.
03:31But Donald Trump is fully aware of the optics of this situation
03:34and, of course, is losing congressional support from even some Republicans
03:38who are now calling for greater oversight.
03:41Well, the latest that we have on that and on the kind of movement from the White House
03:45is that late on Monday there was a meeting for nearly two hours inside the Oval Office
03:50between Donald Trump and some of his top aides with Kristi Noem, the DHS secretary,
03:56and her aide, Corey Lewandowski.
03:58Now, a source told the New York Times that there was no suggestion that her job was at risk
04:02and that the meeting was actually at Noem's request.
04:05But one key person who was not at that meeting was Stephen Miller,
04:10who, of course, many believe is the man behind these policy ideas from the president.
04:16And there's also an interesting movement there that Noem is having a meeting with Donald Trump
04:20in the Oval Office the same day that Tom Homan gets announced to be heading to Minneapolis
04:25because Noem and Homan reportedly don't get on with each other.
04:29So, you know, there has been an idea that there's been a bit of a shift in the administration there,
04:35but the White House are very much adamant that Noem is not going anywhere.
04:40Frasier, you mentioned optics.
04:41I'm just curious, how does Donald Trump's MAGA base view the killing of the second U.S. citizen
04:48in the city of Minneapolis in just a couple of weeks,
04:53two Caucasian people, I might add, who have been killed?
04:56So how does Trump's base view all of this?
04:59Well, like many things in America, this has become deeply politicized
05:06and many in America see different things when they see the same video there.
05:11But I think something that has really touched the MAGA base
05:14and kind of really made them push back against this
05:17is the notion that this man was carrying a weapon.
05:21Of course, we have concealed carry laws here in the United States
05:23and Alex Peretti has a weapon on him,
05:27but he was legally carrying that firearm.
05:29And the immediate suggestion from the administration
05:32that people cannot carry a weapon whenever they go to a protest elsewhere
05:38really prompted a backlash from significant amounts of people
05:41within the conservative and MAGA movement.
05:44Even the NRA, the National Rifle Association,
05:47pushed back on this and pushed back against one regional attorney general
05:53who tweeted that, and that has kind of caused a bit of a stir online.
05:58Of course, Donald Trump has long said that he is somebody who supports the Second Amendment,
06:03the right to bear arms.
06:05Caroline Levitt said that no one had done more for the Second Amendment
06:07than this current president.
06:09But there has been a significant debate online
06:11about the fact that Donald Trump and his administration have been,
06:15their point on this has been arguing that the man was carrying a weapon
06:19and therefore posed a threat, considering they have been the people
06:21pushing these laws in the first place.
06:24But of course, it is also sparking wider debate about these tactics being used
06:30by ICE, by Customs and Borders patrol agents,
06:34and the polling for these raids has actually now gone through the floor.
06:40Whilst people may agree with Donald Trump's immigration tactics
06:43in terms of trying to get illegal aliens out of the country,
06:48the smash-and-grab techniques and the optics that are spreading online
06:52and on social media are not as popular as Donald Trump thinks that they were
06:56when he went into the election.
06:57So, let's look at the election.
