00:00Hi, this is Mariah Gullow from The Hollywood Reporter, and I'm in studio today with Noah Schnapp.
00:09Hi, thank you for having me.
00:10Hi, Noah. Thank you for coming in.
00:12Of course. I'm glad to be here.
00:13It's always very exciting to get somebody from Stranger Things.
00:16Yeah.
00:17And I know that we probably won't be hearing much about season three, but I'm going to ask you a few questions about it.
00:23Okay.
00:24But first, I want to talk to you about season two.
00:26Yeah.
00:27This was a big season for you. This was heavy duty. Will has been through the ringer now.
00:34Yeah.
00:35What was it like filming? Okay, you've been almost eaten by a demogorgon, and then you were possessed by a mind flayer.
00:45Yeah.
00:46So, how are you feeling now? Is it time for, I don't know, like a spa day or something?
00:52I could go for a nice massage and, like, yeah, that'd be nice. But, I mean, Will, he definitely went through a lot last season.
00:59It was crazy to film, just because of the kind of stuff that I had to do last season.
01:04Yeah.
01:04Yeah. You had to spend a lot of time in a hospital gown.
01:06Yeah. That was, those scenes were really cool because, I mean, it was all very real and the set was so cool.
01:13And I got to work with Paul Reiser.
01:16Yeah.
01:17And I just, it was definitely challenging last season because, I mean, for one of the scenes that, at the, it's, it's the last episode and they're getting the monster out of me.
01:26We filmed that till, like, eight in the morning.
01:28So, we were filming all night.
01:30And I was just screaming and screaming and, and I lost my voice for a few days after that, but.
01:35Wow.
01:36Yeah. And then there was a scene, I remember I was on the field, like, screaming at the monster to go away.
01:41And that scene was really tough because I was just, like, kind of, I was looking at nothing.
01:46And it was just, a lot of the season was just me screaming at a sky and a green screen.
01:51Wow. Yeah.
01:52And you've had to go through post-traumatic stress disorder from season one.
01:55Yeah.
01:56And then you had to.
01:57And now there's more that I get to face.
01:58I think it's going for these kids.
02:00Yeah.
02:01But you had to, you know, kind of get angry and demonically possessed.
02:05Did you study any other kind of possession movies, like Exorcist or Poltergeist?
02:10Yeah.
02:11I watched Exorcist, but it's, it's very hard kind of to research about, like, possessions and stuff because it's, I mean, it's not things, it's not a thing that, like, happens in real life.
02:20Right.
02:21So, I kind of just had to, I had nothing to really.
02:23You had to pull from within.
02:24Yeah.
02:24I just had to, like, look at movies and kind of think about it myself.
02:29But it was definitely really hard.
02:31And then there was one scene where I had to do, like, a seizure.
02:34And I remember watching videos of people having seizures.
02:37And my friend actually has had a seizure before and I've seen it.
02:41So I had to, I used that too.
02:43Oh, wow.
02:44And we had Shannon Purser in here last year when she was nominated for her Emmy.
02:49I love her.
02:50Yeah.
02:50Are you excited for awards season?
02:53Of course.
02:54I mean, I just, there's so much to come and our show and me and Millie and Dacre and we've been nominated for different things.
03:02And I'm very excited for the MTV Movie Awards.
03:07Yes.
03:08Oh, you are nominated for Most Frightened.
03:10Yeah, that's, wow.
03:12I mean, I'm so grateful to, I mean, it's my first kind of, like, solo nomination.
03:16So it's very exciting.
03:18And I'm just very excited to see what happens in awards season and that our show kind of gets recognized.
03:25Yeah.
03:26Okay.
03:27So let's talk a little bit about what's happening now because you are jumping into 1985.
03:34Yeah.
03:34Do you, I know you can't talk that much, disclaimer right from the beginning, but does Will get a little bit of time to kind of process everything that's happened to him from the past few seasons?
03:50Well, I can't tell you much.
03:53It's set in 1985.
03:55There's eight episodes.
03:57I mean, Will, I don't want to get in trouble.
04:01I can tell you that.
04:02Do you want to see him have a nice summer?
04:04I'd love to see Will kind of just relax and have a spa day, you know, just chill for one time.
04:10Yeah.
04:10But, I mean, this season is definitely, it's great because it has a lot of, like, a lot of the dark parts from season two and a lot of the light, playful parts from season one.
04:20Right.
04:21But that's all I'm going to say because I can't say more.
04:23Well, there's a few, maybe, okay, so maybe the way we do this is I tell you a couple of things that we already know.
04:29Okay.
04:30And you can comment on them.
04:31Okay.
04:31As if you're not in the show.
04:34Okay.
04:34Oh, but before I do that, we're in 1985 now.
04:39So, what kind of research did you do for 1985?
04:42I mean, I, there's, this is now set in the summer and the costumes are really different this year.
04:49So, I just watched movies from, I, I, it's, I can still pull from the movies.
04:54That's Back to the Future.
04:55Yeah, yeah.
04:55Yeah.
04:56Yeah.
04:56I mean, I watched that movie.
04:57I love that movie.
04:58Yeah.
04:59And there were so many great movies that came out during the 80s.
05:02And it's very different this season because it's in the summer.
05:06So, you kind of get to see a different version of everyone.
05:10Are adults constantly boring you with 80s trivia?
05:14Are they, like, telling you what it was like all the time?
05:17All the time on set, like, Winona will tell me, like, oh, I remember we, we had this.
05:23Or, like, the crew will be, will say, like, when there's a certain piece of clothing, they'll be like, oh, I used to wear that.
05:29And, and it's just cool to think, like, that people in that age range had that when they were younger.
05:35And my dad used stuff from that, that time.
05:37And I just always think about, like, when I'm older, I hope I'll be able to watch, like, a show that has stuff from when I was a kid.
05:44Yeah.
05:45Yeah, what's it like having Winona there on set for you?
05:47Because she's kind of, she's an icon of the 80s.
05:50So, she's probably, like, the, the best person you could probably get 80s advice from.
05:58I mean, she's just, first of all, she's amazing to work with.
06:02I love her.
06:02And she's, she's the best.
06:04I mean, she's so kind to me and to everyone.
06:07And whenever I need, like, help with a scene or anything, she'll always, she'll be like, oh, can I help you?
06:12Let's, let's talk about the scene.
06:13Let's talk through it.
06:14And she'll bring me in her trailer and talk to me about it.
06:16And I, it's so great getting to work with, like, a good actor.
06:21Because that just makes this job so much easier when you get to work off of someone who's really good.
06:25Yeah.
06:25And it just, it really helped me last season getting to work with her.
06:29Oh.
06:30All right.
06:30So, I'm going to tell you some things that we already know.
06:33Okay.
06:34All right.
06:35We are going to see Will and Eleven hang out together.
06:39There will be more interaction because the two of you haven't really met yet.
06:43So, should we be excited about that?
06:48Very.
06:50Super excited.
06:51And then we have two couples now, right?
06:53We have Mike and Eleven.
06:54We have Lucas and Max.
06:55So, are Will and Dustin feeling like third wheels?
06:59I mean, who knows if they find a true love or not.
07:03But, I guess they could be third wheels.
07:06Or, you know, there's plenty of D&D to be played, too.
07:09Yeah.
07:10Okay, another thing we know.
07:12Lucas's little sister Erica will be on the next season.
07:14Oh, I love her.
07:15Yeah.
07:16She's so funny.
07:16Are they, now her and her friends are going on adventures of their own?
07:20She definitely has a bigger part this season.
07:22Mm-hmm.
07:23And she is in, she kind of has her own storyline with one of, someone from the cast.
07:29Sweet.
07:30Yeah.
07:30That's exciting.
07:31Thanks for the exclusive.
07:33All right.
07:33So, we've had a couple of pretty high-profile television stars on, and we've been asking them this question about their next season.
07:41Just to give me a word, just one word to tease it out.
07:45Just something to make the fans feel crazy.
07:47They're going to have to start doing some investigation based on this one word.
07:51Okay.
07:52Um, oh, I know.
07:54I have a good one.
07:55Okay.
07:55Spreading.
07:57Spreading.
07:57Mm-hmm.
07:58I mean, I already have some series of my own.
08:01Okay.
08:01Yeah.
08:02I mean, I feel like I need to actually go through an old D&D book and look at more monsters on there.
08:08I mean, it's crazy, because some people, like, I've been watching YouTube videos on people talking about season three and stuff, and some people are just so spot on.
08:17And it's just, it's crazy.
08:18I'm like, how do you know?
08:19And then some people just are so off.
08:21But it's nice to, like, see what people think.
08:23Yeah, I definitely will get involved in Reddit threads, because they're more entertaining sometimes than, you know, while you're waiting for the new episode to come out, you're, like, reading the Reddit threads, and you have this whole other thing.
08:38And then you watch the show, and you're like, oh, okay.
08:40Exactly.
08:40That's not what happens.
08:42Okay, so just another fun little game for you, and this is, like, totally, like, spoiler-free.
08:48I'm assuming that you are perhaps entering into high school.
08:54In real life?
08:55No.
08:56Oh, okay.
08:57I assume that you're entering into high school, your character, Will, is entering into high school, and all the kids will have a yearbook.
09:06So I asked this from a cast member of Star Trek as well, and it's kind of a fun game.
09:11This is, like, what would be on your yearbook.
09:14Okay.
09:14Okay, so we're, I guess we're jumping ahead to your high school yearbook, but let's say that any cast member from Stranger Things is a possibility here.
09:22I'm going to ask you to name most likely to succeed.
09:26Out of, like, the whole cast?
09:28Yeah.
09:29Um, oh, that's hard.
09:32Voted most likely to succeed.
09:35Like, which kid is going to end up being?
09:38Dustin.
09:39Oh.
09:40I think he'll be really smart.
09:42Best dressed.
09:44Oh, um, Billy.
09:47Nice.
09:48I like that.
09:49Class clown.
09:52Dustin.
09:52Yeah.
09:54I think so.
09:56Teacher's pet.
09:58Dustin.
10:02Most athletic.
10:04Oh, um, um, Lucas.
10:06Nice.
10:07Biggest flirt.
10:10Uh, Lucas.
10:12Life of the party.
10:15Oh, definitely Steve.
10:19Nice.
10:20And most likely to die in a horrible interdimensional accident.
10:27I have to give it to myself.
10:29Noah, thank you so much for coming in.
10:32Thank you for having me.
10:32See you for season three.
10:35And see you on Netflix.
10:37Soon.
10:38Hopefully.
10:39I don't know how soon.
10:40Yeah.
10:40Yeah.
