00:00What do you think, in your personal opinion, is the worst thing that Dee has ever done?
00:05Oh my...
00:06Hi, I'm Caitlin Olson, and I am in studio with a Hollywood reporter.
00:13It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, season 14.
00:1714!
00:18It is upon us.
00:19Yes.
00:19And this is a record-tying season.
00:21Yes, we now are tied with Ozzie and Harriet for longest-running live-action comedy.
00:27Yes.
00:27No one's going to ever beat The Simpsons.
00:30It's not...
00:30Yeah, it's not possible.
00:31It's just unattainable.
00:32I know, it's like they're immortal or something.
00:35I know, I know.
00:35We're going to try, though.
00:36We're going to try.
00:37I want to be like the Golden Girls of inappropriate basic cable comedy.
00:41That's perfect.
00:44Is there any news about season 15?
00:46I mean, I assume that everybody would be excited to break the record.
00:49You know, I don't even know if it's about that, but it's just so much fun.
00:53I don't think we really ever want to stop doing it.
00:57I think that it's very easy for me to say because I don't produce this show, I don't write it, and I don't edit it.
01:03So it's a two-and-a-half-month-out-of-the-year commitment, so I would do it forever.
01:08It's more about whether Rob and Charlie feel like they want to jump right back into the writer's room and Glenn.
01:14And, you know, it's a lot.
01:17They put a lot of pressure on themselves to make really great quality episodes, and sometimes you need a little bit of a break.
01:23But hopefully we'll take a break and come back.
01:25Well, let's talk about this season.
01:27Okay.
01:27So, okay, so I've watched a few of the episodes.
01:32I assume there might be some that you would be excited for the world to see.
01:36Are there any that you were particularly excited about?
01:40Yes.
01:41There is an episode called A Woman's Right to Chop, which is all about how the guys think that women shouldn't be getting very, very short haircuts because they don't like it, and they have to look at it.
01:54So they should have an input on whether or not women should be able to do that, and I love that one very, very much.
02:01There's an episode where we tackle climate change that cracks me up.
02:05Excellent.
02:05And then we do a film noir episode this year just because we always like to do something weird to mix it up to keep ourselves entertained, and that one's really fun.
02:15Oh, and Dolph Lundgren.
02:17Oh, yes.
02:18Can we talk about that?
02:19Did you get to meet Dolph Lundgren?
02:20I didn't get to meet him.
02:22I was like the one day that I didn't work.
02:24He was so dreamy, though, right?
02:26Yes.
02:27Yeah.
02:27Yes.
02:27That was really exciting.
02:28I actually very much enjoyed that episode just because of the whole idea of focus grouping Maximum Thunder.
02:38Thundergun.
02:39Thundergun.
02:40Maximum Cool.
02:41Yeah.
02:42I love that.
02:44I mean, I love any send-up of the movie industry because right now it is so rife for, I mean, it's so easy to make fun of it just because it's gotten so sequel-y and so crazy and out of control.
02:57Well, and also because, you know, we're very good friends with the creators of Game of Thrones, and I loved Game of Thrones so much.
03:05And it was so ridiculous to me, the outcry over, fine, you didn't like the finale.
03:12Okay.
03:13Demanding they rewrite and reshoot the finale is the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life.
03:19Just some random people who don't know how to write demanding that it could be done better is so funny to me, so I like that.
03:24So one of the things about It's Always Sunny that is great is that the characters don't change.
03:30They don't ever learn anything.
03:31They don't ever evolve.
03:32But you've been inhabiting this role for over a decade, and the gang has been creating together for over a decade.
03:41So what has evolved on the show if the characters aren't evolving?
03:44Yeah, well, I think that, you know, that fifth or sixth character is really the city of Philadelphia and the environment.
03:52And we really like exploring how that's evolving and how we're trying to adapt to it while holding on to this idea that we have zero desire to change.
04:02Right.
04:02And that's really funny to me.
04:04And I love the idea that Danny really disrepresents what we're going to turn into.
04:09I mean, hopefully nobody grows or evolves.
04:13Rob gets asked this question a lot because his character is now gay.
04:16But the beautiful thing about Mac is that he's still Mac, and even though he's gay, he's still fiercely Catholic and does not believe.
04:27I mean, it's the struggle there is so much more fun to watch now that he's come out.
04:34And he's still, you know, a despicable person.
04:37Yes, he's still actively torturing himself.
04:40Yes, that's right.
04:40He just now thinks that everyone wants to see him without his shirt, and we don't.
04:48So we all want a season 15 to happen.
04:51So how do we get the ball rolling on that campaign?
04:54Is there anything in the news that would pique your interest for a season 15?
05:00I mean, things are happening right now that I feel like.
05:02There's always something happening in the news.
05:04Because I think whether we did it now or waited a year or waited until 2020, which would be very interesting, there's always going to be something that we can satirize.
05:15I feel like Rudy Giuliani needs to be, like, related.
05:19Oh, please don't do that to me.
05:23Maybe someone that we model after Rudy Giuliani.
05:28Rudy Giuliani type.
05:29He's despicable, that's for sure.
05:32The show gets to be amazingly inappropriate, and it gets away with it.
05:38Why do you think it gets away with it, whereas other shows get called out for being crazy, crazy disgusting?
05:45That's a really good question, and we get asked that a lot.
05:48I'm not sure I know the answer.
05:50I think it might be because we started doing this when we've taken a year off, a year or two off?
05:57We started doing this 15 years ago, and not a lot of people were doing it.
06:03And I think the reason we get away with it is because we are clearly not advocating for this behavior.
06:09We're very clearly calling this behavior out as ludicrous.
06:13And because, you know, we are really pointing out, making fun of, sounds kind of mean, but I think we really are.
06:23I am making fun of extremes on all sides.
06:28Right, right.
06:28So I don't, you know, there are a lot of people who come up and they're like, that's so cool.
06:32You're making fun of those snowflake liberals.
06:34And we're like, are we?
06:36And then there's people who are like, oh, it's great that you guys are like bashing conservatives.
06:40And it's like, if you really watch it, we're just, we're looking at human behavior and how reprehensible it can be when you go to the extreme and you are completely narcissistic and not worried about the greater good.
06:55Right, because as we know from Sunny, from Veep, and from Curb Your Enthusiasm, selfishness is a human behavior not attached to any political side.
07:06That's right.
07:07That's exactly right.
07:08And when you take it to the extreme, it's absolutely ridiculous.
07:11And people who really, really firmly stand behind and defend that behavior is just funny.
07:16Okay, so the last question to you, and this is going to be a hard one.
07:19Okay.
07:20But what do you think, in your personal opinion, is the worst thing that Dee has ever done?
07:25Oh, my, the worst thing Dee's ever done.
07:32Maybe, oh, gosh, put shoe polish on a baby because a black baby is more desirable and more expensive than a white baby.
07:45Maybe, I don't know.
07:47There's a lot to choose from, but that's the first thing that popped into my head.
07:50That's pretty bad.
07:52Yeah, I have two babies now, so that's a bad idea.
07:56Do you think you're going to let your kids watch the show?
07:59Oh, my gosh.
08:00So my nine-year-old has been begging for two years.
08:02And literally, just last week, I let him watch most of D-Day.
08:10Uh-huh.
08:10And he was beside himself.
08:13Uh-huh.
08:13But he's been stealing scripts and reading them behind my back for a while, apparently.
08:19And so he's at a great age where it's like, we can talk about swearing.
08:23Right.
08:23He can swear at home as much as he wants just to practice and get out of his system.
08:26He knows, doesn't ever do it at school.
08:28It's really just, there's certain subject matter he doesn't really even know about in the world yet
08:34that I don't want him, don't want to protect him from.
08:36But there's a lot that he actually can watch.
08:38And my kids are really funny and have a really good sense of humor.
08:41So that's, I love that you asked that because that actually just started.
08:44That might be happening every Wednesday night.
08:45I love that your kids are getting excited about the business.
08:50Do you think they're going to go into the business?
08:51I don't think so.
08:52And I really hope not.
08:54Do they think it's ridiculous what mommy and daddy do?
08:56They don't really care.
08:58They just like craft services.
09:00They come and there's like, yeah, cool, where's the snacks?
09:03They're like, no, I'm about to do a really funny scene.
09:05Do you want to see it?
09:06And they're like, we would love to get some M&Ms.
09:09Is that an option?
09:12You know what?
09:12They get excited every time the billboards go up.
09:15There's like a billboard on the way to school.
09:17They're proud.
09:17They're proud of us, yeah, which is kind of cool.
09:19But other than that, I don't think they care.
09:21All right.
09:21Well, we're very much looking forward to a season 15.
09:24Fingers crossed.
09:25My fingers are crossed, too.
09:26Happy to watch the rest of season 14 on FX and FXX.
09:30Hope you like it.
09:31Bye.
