Will Arnett discusses Is This Thing On?, a film loosely based on Liverpool comedian John Bishop’s life.Directed by Cooper, the film tells the story of comic Alex, played by Arnett, and his soon-to-be ex-wife Tess, played by Laura Dern.Set in New York, the film swaps Manchester’s Frog and Bucket comedy club for The Comedy Cellar, where Arnett, also voice of the titular character in animated TV series BoJack Horseman, began his comedy career.

00:00Well, obviously, in John's life, comedy has played a huge role in terms of, yeah, it does have a therapeutic effect.

00:06You know, comedy is a great way, and we all use it sometimes.

00:09We use it to break the ice.

00:11We use it to start a conversation.

00:13Sometimes it helps us navigate our way into heavier emotional things.

00:17Sometimes it lets the air out when you have a big, heavy conversation.

00:22We all use comedy for different ways.

00:24And so it is kind of a perfect vessel, especially in our story, for this guy, for Alex, this character, Alex, who's inspired by John, to sort of find his truth.
