00:02The Department of Homeland Security is shut down this morning, with Congress in recess until next Monday.
00:08The stalemate could last at least a week.
00:11The Trump administration's immigration enforcement operations will continue.
00:15ICE has separate funding coming from last summer's One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
00:20But the department's independent watchdog says the funding lapse could delay active investigations.
00:26The inspector general is currently reviewing eight cases, including the use of facial recognition technology and allegations of excessive force
00:35by ICE agents, according to Politico.
00:37Experts say most Americans won't feel the impact right away, though prolonged disruptions could eventually affect services like air travel.
00:45Meanwhile, Democrats are holding firm on demands for changes at ICE and Customs and Border Protection following the deadly officer
00:53-involved shootings of two American citizens in Minneapolis.
00:56One sticking point, whether agents should be allowed to wear masks during operations.
01:02Border czar Tom Holman says he's not a fan of the masks, but defends them.
01:07Look, you know, I don't like the masks either.
01:10But because threats against ICE officers, you know, are up over 1,500 percent actual assaults and threats are up
01:17over 8,000 percent.
01:18These men wouldn't have to protect themselves.
01:20As far as identifying themselves, they all have placards identifying themselves as ICE, E-R-O, H-S-I, D
01:27-E-A, FBI.
01:28So they all have placards on them.
01:30So I'll let the White House and members of Congress, you know, fight that out.
01:36Democrats are also pushing for body cameras, judicial warrants before entering private property, and an end to racial profiling, which
01:44Holman says is not occurring.
01:46House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries says Democrats are not backing down.
01:51Well, we're willing to have a good faith conversation about everything.
01:54But fundamentally, we need change that is dramatic, that is bold, that is meaningful, and that is transformational.
02:00And these are common sense things.
02:02As for Minneapolis, Holman says more than 1,000 immigration agents have left Minnesota since Operation Metro Surge ended last
02:11week, with more expected to follow.
02:13He says a small security force will remain in Minnesota.
