00:27The current Labour leader, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, was in the decision-making party
00:32not to let Andy Burnham stand as an MP.
00:37There were a total of nine people on that committee and the decision was made as eight votes for no
00:42and just one for yes.
00:45Previously, Mayor Sadiq Khan had said that if Andy Burnham wants to stand as an MP, he should be allowed to.
00:52I think if Andy Burnham wants to be a member of Parliament, Andy Burnham should be allowed to be a member of Parliament.

01:14At the same event, Sir Sadiq Khan also spoke about London, its role in the UK's economy and how it supports immigration.

01:26In my view, we should refuse the false choice between open borders on one side and net zero migration on the other
01:38and instead opt for a balanced approach which responds to our needs, not our prejudices.
01:46Because moving so far back in the opposite direction, while potentially particularly expedient in the short term,
01:54could come back to haunt us.
01:57For it would not only be to the detriment of our economy, but living standards too.
02:03In London, we're doing all we can to support economic growth,
02:10with a plan in place to make our capital's economy £107 billion larger by 2035.
02:19A radical decrease in net migration in London would make this much harder
02:25and see the construction sector grinding to a halt.
02:29True integration is what transforms immigration from a potential source of friction
02:36into a driver for economic growth and community cohesion.
02:42That's why I worry about the impact of making immigrants wait twice as long for settled status.
