Despite record low murder rates in the nation’s capital, “appalling” BBC Panorama footage shows how much further the Metropolitan Police has to go, the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, said during an all-Assembly meeting at the London Assembly.
00:00That's why I'll continue to provide positive opportunities for young Londoners, fund activities for children during the school holidays, and support our Violence Reduction Unit, which is working to prevent crime.
00:10It's been a rough few months for the Metropolitan Police. A recent review of anti-black racism within the force concluded that the Met's systems, leadership, governance and culture are producing racial harm.
00:27And of course, that only came after the now notorious Panorama Exposé on Charing Cross Police Station. After the airing of that documentary, the Met's dismissed six officers attached to the station for what they described as their appalling conduct and said more misconduct hearings are scheduled.
00:50However, according to the mayor, murders in the capital during the first nine months of 2025 were at their lowest since monthly records began, representing a fall of 58% compared to 2003, while a recent week-long Metropolitan Police operation targeting crime in London's West End resulted in more than 140 people being arrested.
01:18Our funding so far has helped to create more than half a million positive opportunities to divert vulnerable young Londoners away from criminal gangs and crime and towards training and employment.
01:31The good news is that we know our approach is working despite our population rising by more than a million and austerity from the previous government.
01:42Since 2016, violence with injury is down by 14%, homicide is down by 22%, burglary is down by 29%, a reduction of nearly 20,000 offences.
01:57Gun crime with a lethal barrel discharge is down by nearly 50%.
02:03And compared to last year, knife crime is down by 18%, personal robbery is down by 13%, and theft from the person is down by 16%.
02:13In addition, the number of murders in the capital in the first nine months of this year was the lowest since monthly records began, and represents a fall of 58% compared to 2003.
