Police Interceptors S24E14 (Jan 5 2026)
Transcript
00:00This is Police Interceptors, and you're riding with the pride of
00:10Northamptonshire, Ace Pursuit drivers, with air support, and a crack dog unit.
00:23They bring down the bad guys, keep the streets safe, and battle 24-7, in the war on crime.
00:44This is what it is, isn't it? We find them, we lock them up.
00:53Coming up...
00:54It's 1-0-5, temporary high risk, alongside the roundabout.
00:58High-speed moves and reckless manoeuvres fail to shake the cops.
01:03It's decamp, decamp, we're just looking for them now.
01:06Fresh footprints!
01:08An epic cross-country manhunt, led by a canine hero...
01:12Police for dogs, stay where you are!
01:15Do not pain!
01:17And...
01:18Oh my lord!
01:20On the motorway, a night of madness and mayhem.
01:23Crash, crash, crash, crash, crash, crash, crash, crash!
01:26Vehicle's in the ditch, vehicle's in the ditch!
01:298-5 kills me south, a spot of vehicle just hit.
01:48It's Wednesday night.
01:50We're going to 8-5 from here, can't we?
01:53Yeah.
01:54On the graveyard shift this evening are Sergeant Richie Gibson and Harrison Meverley.
02:00Oh, it's literally parallel to us, I reckon, come off here.
02:05They've been cruising the M1 northbound in the Mark III series
02:09and have just been alerted to a suspicious motor on an A road nearby.
02:139-9 to 6-1, 8-5 kills me south, a spot of vehicle just hit.
02:19Police suspect the vehicle is being used by an organised crime gang who steal from parked-up lorries.
02:25Knock a left at the top.
02:29This type of crime, also known as curtain siding, has risen sharply in the past decade
02:34and is thought to have cost the UK economy around £400 million a year.
02:40Standby. I'd hold here because it could potentially get back to Watford Gap this way.
02:45This is the A5. We might be ahead of it.
02:51Advance driver Richie loves a holiday in Australia
02:54and dreams of a sun-kissed life down under when he retires from the force.
03:00But first, there's a bad guy to catch just off the M1.
03:04We're just holding the A5 by Watford Gap.
03:07The motor they're looking for is a Volkswagen estate registered to an address in Leeds.
03:12I think, like, two minutes ago, it's just whether we're ahead of it or it got ahead of us.
03:18Or we push up to Killsby to have a look at it.
03:20But...
03:22I think hold.
03:24Harrison's instinct is to sit tight.
03:29Who's a clever boy?
03:30That's it. That's it. That's it.
03:33Richie falls in and does his best to lie low.
03:369-9, standby. We're behind that squatter vehicle.
03:39But he sticks out like a marked car in a rear-view mirror.
03:43Yeah, it's a fair enough to stop, isn't it?
03:46They think he's clocked them, so Richie hits the blues just to be sure.
03:50Yeah, 9-9. It is now about to stop.
03:54Can I have the film on channel, please?
03:56Not only is he failing to stop, but he's using the A5 as his own personal racetrack.
04:029-9, we're southbound at the moment. Speed is 1-0-6.
04:07We're just passing the junction for Long Bugbee. No deviation.
04:11No deviation.
04:14At these speeds, it's a good thing the roads are empty.
04:17We're on the A5 heading southbound.
04:20But figuring out this chap's escape plan is a real head spinner.
04:25It's done a reciprocal. It's a return route, return route.
04:30The boys are in a 369-horsepower BMW 340i.
04:35The third tactical option would be a Stinger Sight,
04:37if we can get to any dappuccinole bars or anything like that.
04:41Keeping tabs on this 19-year-old VW banger should be easy.
04:45We'll be coming back up towards Watford Gap for Clooney, telling where you are.
04:50But colleagues in an armed response vehicle are still a couple of miles away.
04:55Speed is 1-0-9. No other traffic. Medium risk.
05:00And now the driver shows how desperate he is to escape Richie's clutches.
05:06Wrong side to the roundabout.
05:07Going anti-clockwise on a roundabout is reckless and foolish.
05:13But you won't shake Richie that easily.
05:15Temporary high risk. Wrong side of the roundabout.
05:18It was a second exit.
05:21We're headed towards Crick now.
05:22Heading general direction of Crick at the moment. Still on the A5.
05:27Speed is 1-0-0.
05:30With another roundabout fast approaching up ahead.
05:34It's a relief when he takes the safe option.
05:38Or does he?
05:39Round the roundabout. It's wrong way. Wrong way down the dual carriageway. We've not followed.
05:45The bloke is now hurtling the wrong way along the dual carriageway.
05:50It's too dangerous for the cops to follow. He knows it.
05:54Temporary loss. Roundabout. It's wrong way. High risk.
05:57While Richie's silky skills and Harrison's eagle eyes keep them within sniffing distance.
06:04I'm going to ride right there. It's into this estate here.
06:08The VW has swung into an industrial park.
06:12It's into dearth. It's into dearth. It's right into here.
06:16Which probably means he's ditching four wheels for two legs.
06:20It's gone into dearth control. It might be a big fanny tandem.
06:24Sure enough, he's gone for the decamp.
06:27Ready for some exercise, boys?
06:29It's decamp, decamp. We're just looking for them now.
06:33We'd have to get us on mapping control.
06:35The suspect has gone to ground.
06:38But has he gone for good?
06:39Round the roundabout. It's wrong way. Wrong way. Down the dual carriageway. We've not followed.
07:00In Killsby, a bloke suspected of being a spotter for an organised crime gang tried to give cops the slip on the dual carriageway.
07:09Temporary loss. Roundabouts. Wrong way. High risk.
07:13But Richie and Harrison soon caught up.
07:16It's into this estate here.
07:18Before the driver entered an industrial park, ditched his Volkswagen estate car and scarpered.
07:25It's decamp, decamp. We're just looking for them now.
07:27Harrison and Richie scour the car park.
07:31Unfortunately, the trail has run cold.
07:36So frustrating.
07:38But there is one colleague en route who could help.
07:42And we've got a dog mobile.
07:44Right behind us, so.
07:46It's gonna hold the weight for the dog now.
07:50Within a couple of minutes, dog handler Ash arrives.
07:54Just getting my live location on for everyone.
07:55Yeah, no worries.
07:56Yeah, no worries.
07:58Wait.
07:59And in the boot is his trusty partner, German Shepherd, Ebby.
08:03Come here.
08:05I'm just getting the dog started now. I'll let you know where we go.
08:08In.
08:09Go on, find track.
08:11Find track, Bob.
08:13To us mere mortals, a police dog's ability to pick up a scent is like a superpower.
08:18Go on, track up.
08:20Right, we're into the car park, hooking a right, following the road back down towards the main roundabout.
08:28A well-trained dog can even smell fear, picking up on the hormones we release when we're afraid.
08:33Right, we've got a big metal security gate down the bottom here. He's climbed over it.
08:39Just gonna work out how to get the dog over.
08:41Ebby!
08:43Ebby's convinced the suspect has scaled the fence.
08:46Oh, good girl, wait.
08:47Which means that's the same route Ash must take too, whether he likes it or not.
08:58OK, two-sixes, we're over the fence.
09:06The track through the woods leads Ebby and Ash back to the dual carriageway.
09:11Good girl.
09:13But where to now?
09:15Right, we're hooking her right onto the pavement, back towards roundabout.
09:20A blue light around the corner tells Ash all he needs to know.
09:24Ah, surprise, surprise. Up to Tony and Paul.
09:31Firearms cops up ahead have just collared the suspect, beating Ebby to the pull by only a few seconds.
09:38Ah, yeah, two seconds. We've tracked right up to him.
09:42Good girl.
09:44Good girl. Clever.
09:47The bloke is already in cuffs. So, what's the story?
09:50From Leeds, where the car's from. Disqualified and can't tell us how he's down here.
09:57So, yeah, perfect minute. So, the dog's tracked straight to him.
10:03He admits he's from Leeds, but this Yorkshire pudding offers no good reason for being 120 miles from home in the middle of the night.
10:10Come on in. Take a seat.
10:13His pockets are clean, but he's being locked up for a series of motoring offences, and he'll get a grilling back at the nick.
10:20As we come past here, we see him dipping, saw his car, dog was here within five minutes.
10:26Um, ARVs have stopped him here, and the dog's literally tracked right to him, right to him here.
10:30So, it's good enough for us at the minute. So, it's a good little job. Get the one in custody.
10:36So, let's go on in there.
10:38While Ebby takes a well-earned rest...
10:40Well done. Yes, you clever.
10:43Richie takes a closer look at that Volkswagen.
10:46These, um, number plates are covered in perspex.
10:50They've obviously done it to try and evade ANPI detection.
10:53Needless to say, it didn't work.
10:57Obviously, he's doing 100, 110 mile now in the A5.
11:00He takes significant risk, going the wrong way round, roundabouts, cutting the corner when he can't see.
11:05Heading the wrong way down the suburban dual carriageway sections.
11:08Uh, leaving other road users no choice.
11:11Heading round, uh, blind bends.
11:13Not only is he putting his own life at risk, but he's putting other people at risk.
11:16On his nighttime trip south, the lad from Leeds picked up three driving charges,
11:21including driving whilst disqualified, no insurance, and dangerous driving.
11:26He pleaded guilty, and received a three-year driving ban,
11:30and sentenced to a year at his majesty's pleasure.
11:39Police for the dog, come out now!
11:41Come out now! Do you understand?
11:43Canine cops really are an Interceptor's best friend.
11:47Good boy!
11:51Boasting intelligence.
11:53You've got pups, haven't you?
11:55Stamina.
11:57And a unique ability to sniff out a wrong-un from miles away.
12:00The feeling at the end of a track where you've found people, that is probably the best part of this job, I think.
12:10Um, because tracking is all about teamwork.
12:13It's about the dog having skills that I don't have, and me bringing things to the incident that he doesn't have.
12:21And you have to work together and get the result with the end of it, and I think tracking in particular demonstrates that.
12:29And that's why it's my favourite part of the job.
12:31It's the early hours of a Saturday morning.
12:44Six miles outside Northampton, security cameras at a storage facility capture some troubling nocturnal activity.
12:52A figure dressed all in black has breached the perimeter fence and broken into the depot.
13:02He's soon followed by another, and another, and then finally a fourth.
13:08Before the group, apparently armed with power tools, attempt to gain entry to one of the containers.
13:21What they don't know is that this CCTV feed is monitored 24-7.
13:27And someone's already called the cops.
13:31Suddenly they hear something.
13:33Clearly spooked, the gang's scarper.
13:39Seconds later, a police car arrives on the scene.
13:43Inside are two firearms officers.
13:48Tom, Tom, get your ass here. Tom, get your ass here.
13:52Get on that box. Get on that box. Come on, get on the box. We're going in.
13:56Come on.
13:58But are they too late?
14:00Police are taser! Stand still! Stand still!
14:04The four suspects have split.
14:08Watch that side, mate.
14:10It's now a race against time to make sure they don't get too far.
14:14Yeah, where you are, Rob, that's where they've come out.
14:17Just outside the facility, a second unit have been alerted to more night-time noises.
14:24Stay there! Stay where you are now!
14:26Oh, please, let's go!
14:28It's two suspects dressed in black.
14:31Come on this way.
14:33And they've got two interceptors hard on their heels.
14:38Stay on the floor! Get down on the floor!
14:42Stay where you are now!
14:44One at a time. Keep going, keep going, keep going.
14:45Run through that one.
14:47That's one in cuffs.
14:48You're on your response, Mr Burgery.
14:50But the other one got away.
14:52He's gone towards Belton Lane. Have we got that covered?
14:56What cops need now is an expert in sniffing out cross-country runners.
15:02What's happened? I'm just living in to Belton Lane.
15:04As luck would have it, dog handler Lucy Skulko is on the scene.
15:13And she's got six-year-old German shepherd Bryn in the boot.
15:18Is that all cops out of it?
15:19Yeah.
15:20Cool, thanks mate.
15:21First things first, a quick wrecky.
15:26We ain't gonna be able to get the dog over there, are we?
15:29Gonna have to go round for that, I think.
15:34That's the one they've been after then.
15:35That lock's broke.
15:37And that one.
15:39There's evidence of attempted entry at two separate containers.
15:44And even though it's now 40 minutes since the crime,
15:46there's more than enough here for Bryn to pick up a scent.
15:49I've got one of their shoes, I think.
15:54Bryn is known across the force for his tenacious tracking skills.
15:58And when he's not tucking into bad guys,
16:00he's a sucker for soft scoop ice cream.
16:04Down to one seven, just quickly.
16:06I'm tracking, got a fresh footprint in the grass.
16:11Try and get officers in front.
16:14He's led Lucy 300 metres off-site to the corner of a field.
16:17But is there any gold at the end of the rainbow?
16:23Covid mask.
16:24Good boy.
16:25Bryn, help.
16:27A dog's sense of smell is up to 100,000 times more powerful than a human's.
16:33Bryn, where is he?
16:34Where is he?
16:35So, wherever Bryn goes, Lucy follows, no matter how bumpy the ride.
16:41This is barbed wire as well, just be careful.
16:45Lucy's been on the force more than 15 years and says her top three passions in life are dogs, long walks in the country and catching criminals.
16:56So far, this shift's ticking every box.
17:02I've now got two sets of footprints that we're tracking side by side.
17:08The evidence is now clear.
17:10Two runners have made off in this direction.
17:14Out.
17:16Out.
17:18Out.
17:19Get on.
17:20Track on.
17:22And it looks like they may no longer be dressed in black.
17:26I'll just come back for that.
17:28But following human scent in open rural spaces is one thing.
17:33Track on.
17:35In a built-up area, it's much more difficult.
17:39If he's come across that field, the bottoms of his trousers and his shoes will be soaking wet.
17:43So, while Bryn tries to figure out where they've gone...
17:48On a residential street half a mile away, things are haunting off.
17:54This fiesta's making off.
17:57Officers are behind a Ford Fiesta, which they saw make-off from a road near the storage facility.
18:04But the clueless drivers try to make his getaway down a cul-de-sac.
18:08Get out.
18:10Get out.
18:12Get out.
18:13Get out of the car.
18:15And that's two in cuffs.
18:18One detained.
18:20Stryver.
18:22At the moment, mate, you're under arrest.
18:24On suspicion of attempted theft.
18:26What's more, just around the corner, police have nicked a third.
18:32Cops now reckon five people could have been involved in the job,
18:35which means two suspects remain at large.
18:39Fresh footprints.
18:41But with no other clues as to where they may be, all eyes now are on Bryn.
18:46One seven, we've got more fresh footprints.
18:50Despite tracking for almost two miles, that nose is still as keen as mustard.
18:55You being serious?
18:56And having dragged Lucy through yet another hedgerow, Bryn hits the jackpot.
19:04Right, police for the dogs, stay where you are.
19:07Delta one seven, I've got one.
19:10Do not move.
19:12Do you understand me?
19:14Do not move.
19:15A 35 kilo German shepherd charged up on adrenaline is more than enough to make the bloke surrender.
19:22Watch him. Good boy. Good boy. Watch him.
19:28The runner is fully compliant.
19:33And, with the help of colleagues, is cuffed in no time.
19:37What a good boy, Bryn. Good lad.
19:40Good lad.
19:43It's unlikely this chap would ever have been found were it not for our canine hero.
19:48One of you might as well do the property sandwich, because it's only going to be tiny.
19:52That's four detained.
19:53And I'll try and carry on tracking.
19:55And, incredibly, Bryn's still got some juice at the tank.
19:59Bryn, track on.
20:00Track on.
20:02And soon enough, he locks back into the scent, hauling Lucy to a second property down the street.
20:09Wait.
20:11Where there's yet more hurdles to overcome.
20:15Track on.
20:17Something around this front porch is getting right up Bryn's nose.
20:23Bryn, Bryn. Bryn, come here.
20:26Right, police for the dog, get out.
20:27Another one.
20:29Stay where you are.
20:31Don't move.
20:33Watch him.
20:35Watch him.
20:37Watch him.
20:39It's a stunning result, as Bryn's got the fifth and final suspect.
20:44He was hiding between two wheelie bins and the dog got to him before I could stop him.
20:49The fella got his top nibbled, but suffered no injuries, which just goes to show that our pal Bryn is firm, but fair.
20:59Good lad. He's a good boy.
21:03He's a good lad.
21:05Yes.
21:06With five suspects rounded up and headed for the nick, it's been one heck of a night for the interceptors.
21:13And proof that teamwork and tenacity can deliver top results.
21:18Having Bryn on your side helps too.
21:21I'm so chuffed because he's worked so hard for that.
21:25I can't even tell you how far that is.
21:28That's a long old way.
21:30He's picked up a track.
21:32He's tracked through three or four open fields, ditches, barbed wire fences, electric fences.
21:37He's come out into a housing estate, which immediately makes it more difficult because there's less scent available.
21:44He's managed to find the first one hiding.
21:46And then after that, he's managed to continue tracking and find the second one hiding another hundred meters down the road.
21:52So in terms of dog work, that's what we're here for, because they wouldn't have been found otherwise.
21:57He doesn't know how good he is. It's all a big game to him.
22:00He does love a McFlurry, so I think he's earned one tonight.
22:03Later that evening, police picked up another man suspected of being involved in the job.
22:10At court, all six of them pleaded guilty to attempted burglary and were fined more than £200 each.
22:18The driver was also banned for six months after being found to have no insurance and no license.
22:25Coming up...
22:27Speed is one three zero, lane one.
22:30Fast, furious and downright foolish.
22:33Oh my lord.
22:35And...
22:36Have you had anything to drink tonight?
22:37No.
22:38No, nothing.
22:40A ruined motor and a wrecked driver.
22:4386, so you have been drinking.
22:45Have you eaten or drank anything in the last 20 minutes?
22:46I had a bottle of Moretti, but that's it.
22:48It's a social taboo that's been a crime since the 1960s.
22:52I feel your lungs one long continuous blow until I tell you to stop.
22:53No problem.
22:54Go for it.
22:55No problem.
22:56No problem.
22:57Go for it.
22:58No problem.
23:00But over 40,000 people a year still get busted for driving whilst over the limit.
23:02Yeah, so you've failed.
23:03Okay.
23:04So, currently under arrest for driving a motor vehicle on a road whilst over the prescribed
23:06limit.
23:07Drink driving is still a massive problem for us on the road.
23:08I'm not quite sure why the message doesn't get through.
23:09It's the most valuable thing to do.
23:10This is a moral problem.
23:11It's a real-time problem.
23:12I'm not a real-time problem since the 1960s.
23:13I feel your lungs one long continuous blow until I tell you to stop.
23:14No problem.
23:15Go for it.
23:16But over 40,000 people a year still get busted for driving whilst over the limit.
23:21Yeah, so you've failed.
23:23Okay?
23:24So, currently under arrest for driving a motor vehicle on a road whilst over the prescribed
23:31limit.
23:32Drink driving is still a massive problem for us on the road.
23:36Not quite sure why the message doesn't get through but drink driving ruins lives it ruins relationships it ruins family lives
23:44It's a serious problem. We're 100% committed to reducing drink driving on our county roads
23:51I
24:05Have 16
24:09Callum and Stewart have just been alerted to a serious incident involving a car and a lorry on the dual carriageway
24:15We've had a report that a lorry has been driving along the roads and there's a vehicle
24:23That's collided with the back of it the vehicles and deviated and then ended up in a ditch a
24:30Present there's no police or ambulance on the scene. I mean it's got to be along the stretch somewhere
24:38But the lorry driver and another eyewitness have apparently stayed to assist the cops
24:45Oh
24:47Are you alright? I think that's fine, but down to the ditch
24:50Drive is still down me, okay?
24:53This eyewitness was overtaken by the person who crashed I
24:57Saw the car past me about under one hour. All right, but he was coming across the lanes
25:01Yeah, and then he didn't break to last me for garden from okay. Give me two secs. I'll just nip down here, okay?
25:09The lorry driver who was struck is unharmed and eager to help out
25:15Okay, yeah, this drive still in yes, yes, sir
25:18But the suspect driver is yet to get out of his motor
25:23Hello
25:25Police
25:27How are you?
25:29You sure yeah any injuries no you sure you're okay? Yeah?
25:36Considering the state of his car the man is in remarkably good shape
25:40Have you tried to get out?
25:42But Stewart senses something's not right
25:46Have you been drinking no you sure no, okay? You just shaken?
25:52Shaken, but apparently not stirred. Oh
25:55You can get out that side. Yeah. Oh, I didn't realize the door was open. Yeah, get out that side. I'll come round
26:03It turns out the man isn't trapped
26:05But the angle that his motor landed has made it tricky for him to get out
26:11Okay, right, I've got you, but I'll get you up this hill, okay?
26:16Right one two three go
26:18Go go go
26:20Follow me down mate
26:23Free at last and perhaps understandably a little wobbly
26:26Good stuff. Oh
26:31Sit down there
26:33Like this turn around then come on don't hold on to that
26:39Turn around
26:42Sit down take it take a seat
26:45There you go
26:46Right well Callum goes to secure the road Stewart must check on the man's welfare
26:50Have you got anywhere that hurts? Hmm any where does it hurt? It's fine
26:57So when you were sat in the car, it was okay. It's just now that you've come round. Yeah, okay
27:04Stewart's all-time favorite movie is die hard and says if a film were made of his life
27:09He'd want to be played by Hollywood legend Bruce Willis
27:14But he won't need a sixth sense to crack this case
27:17Have you had anything to drink tonight? No, no nothing. What speed were you doing?
27:2460 60 yeah, I don't really believe that
27:28Well, I've got witnesses saying that they thought you're doing there a hundred so huh? Yes. No, okay
27:36While the lorry driver keeps the chap propped up Stewart prepares a breath test
27:41Feel your lungs one long continuous blow until I tell you to stop. Okay, go for it
27:47Stop I see it done
27:51Anything over 35 is a fail
27:5586 so you have been drinking okay time is 22 38 you're currently under arrest on suspicion of driving whilst over the prescribed limit
28:05He's almost two and a half times the legal limit
28:08But they don't want to risk moving him until the ambulance arrives
28:12If this condition does work in the meantime, please do give us a call back
28:16But we will be there as soon as we can
28:18Perfect. Thank you
28:20It could be another three hours till it gets there
28:24Can't wait three hours
28:26I generally feel
28:27I generally feel that this is more down to us
28:32being pissed than
28:35like serious injury
28:37And I just wonder whether the injuries are sort of coming to the fore because
28:43There's more that he's under arrest now
28:47Interceptor Rachel McCready has now arrived to offer assistance
28:51And as for our suspect
28:53Keep your arm up
28:54Don't go to sleep
28:56It looks like the evening's festivities have finally caught up with him
29:01If you're in so much pain
29:03Why are you going to sleep?
29:05I think you're only going to sleep because you're pissed
29:09It's now more than 40 minutes since they first called the ambulance
29:13Let's just get him out of here
29:16We can't leave you in a ditch, okay?
29:18Because all you're doing is falling asleep on us
29:22So after another quick health check
29:24One, two, three
29:26There you go
29:31The wobbly driver is escorted through the woods and back to the road
29:35Where he can relax in the relative warmth and comfort of Rachel's police car
29:39Keep going
29:41There we go
29:42And on that note the drama should be over
29:49Look away now because the chap's just brought up his dinner
29:53Are you going to be properly sick or not?
29:56Yeah
29:57Yes or no?
29:59Because I'm not going to be impressed if you're sick in my car
30:01The plan is to take the man to hospital for an evidential blood test
30:06But just as they're getting ready to go they get some visitors
30:10Hello
30:11Bit of a rough night, yeah?
30:14The ambulance has finally arrived
30:17Have a feel of your neck
30:19And the paramedics confirm Stewart's suspicions
30:23Where's the pain?
30:23The man has suffered no serious injuries
30:29They said he's fine to go to hospital
30:33I think they'd rather not have the sick in their ambulance
30:35So we're going to take him down considering he's already in our car
30:39And then we'll go through the blood procedure at hospital
30:42Let's hope he doesn't redecorate the inside of Rachel's car en route
30:46Before Stewart heads off, the lorry driver wants to show him something
30:52Bloody hell
30:54A chunk of the car's bumper remains wedged into his rear
30:58So that is solid metal
31:02And he's literally hit it so hard that he's bent the metal beam right underneath the lorry
31:10And that's part of his car that's still embedded in it
31:13I'm just going to pull this out now
31:15Of course
31:18It's a sobering reminder of how this whole incident could have had a very different outcome
31:24You don't know what we've got to do to get it across to the public
31:27You cannot drink and drive
31:31We could have had fatals tonight
31:34And having to go and tell the family that their loved ones are dead
31:38Purely because of this individual who's decided to drink
31:42Quite heavily and then drive on the road
31:45It's such a selfish act and I completely despise them and I'm quite happy to say that
31:51Back at hospital the man's blood test confirmed him to be more than twice the legal drink drive limit
31:56For drink driving he was banned from the roads for 18 months and was ordered to pay almost 2,500 pounds in fines and costs
32:04The number of people killed or injured in collisions in northamptonshire is at its lowest level since records began six decades ago
32:18But it only takes one high-speed reckless driver to cause carnage on the roads
32:26In the early hours of Saturday morning police have received reports of a mercedes driving erratically along the m1 northbound
32:40Yeah, I just passed the waffled gap
32:45Interceptor michael holiwell is hunting it down
32:50Let's see the hazard lights on the vehicle
32:53The hazard lights up ahead belong to the person who called the police in front of them is the suspect merck
32:59Yeah, I've got the vehicle in front of me now is approaching 17
33:06But michael's flashing blue lights apparently have little effect
33:13Instead the car continues veering slowly from left to right before finally picking up the pace
33:19Vehicle's weaving from lane one to lane two speed is four zero
33:27Dodgy moves like this often go from naught to a hundred in a fail to stop
33:32He's committed past drinking 17
33:35So getting him off the motorway is a priority
33:41But michael's got a problem
33:44Increase it to six zero
33:45The driver suddenly seems to have located the accelerator
33:52Speed is increased to eight zero
33:55Fortunately because of the time of night there are few other cars about
34:00Speed is one two five
34:03Moving to lane two past heavies
34:06But at speeds like this one small slip could have devastating consequences
34:12Speed is one three zero lane one
34:16Michael can't make a move until backup arrives
34:20Oh my lord
34:24Until then all he can do is keep on the merc's tail
34:27Into lane three back to lane two
34:29Medium risk
34:31And pray that disaster doesn't strike
34:38Crash crash crash crash crash crash crash crash
34:40Vehicle's in the ditch vehicles in the ditch
34:45Another vehicle's been hit another vehicle's been hit
34:49At 120 miles an hour the merc clips an innocent motorist as it passes
34:54An impact which sends both vehicles tumbling across the carriageway in opposite directions
34:59A backup unit heads straight for the innocent motorist
35:07Hello
35:07Hello
35:08Hello
35:08Hello
35:09Hello I can hear you
35:10Yeah I can hear you just stay there stay there for me
35:12What the hell happened?
35:14The upturned vehicle contains a mother and her 12 year old daughter
35:17Do you know how to get these seats down?
35:22Incredibly neither have sustained any serious injuries
35:25There you go
35:26Hold on to my hand
35:27Hold on to my hand
35:28There you go
35:28Take some nice deep breaths
35:30Okay everyone's okay
35:31All right and that's the main thing
35:37Meanwhile Michael's priority is to stop the suspect from getting away
35:42It has crushed crash at 125 now
35:47The merc has penetrated the barrier rolled down the embankment and settled in the woods
35:52One car I'm with the vehicle I'm with the vehicle looking for the driver
35:55But where is he?
36:01Driver is moving is in the back of the car
36:04If he's ended up in the back he can't have been wearing a seat belt
36:08Driver can you hear me?
36:11Which suggests the only thing that saved his life is the airbag and a large dose of luck
36:17Driver of the mercedes is moving breathing but his eyes are shut and not responding to me
36:26The man doesn't even appear to have suffered any serious injuries which is a miracle
36:31Considering what he's just done
36:33Driver driver
36:35One four there's multiple bottles and cans in the vehicle of alcohol
36:39Driver come on
36:41Can you hear me?
36:43It turns out the 120 mile an hour speeder is already a disqualified driver
36:50He is breathing
36:52Within a couple of minutes a second officer arrives on the scene
36:55He's going to come out for us
36:58Yeah
37:00Together they managed to haul the death defying driver into the recovery position whilst they await an ambulance
37:06Stay there mate stay there
37:11Just stay there
37:13The mother and daughter were treated for minor injuries at hospital but were later discharged
37:19No action was taken against the merc driver for suspected drink driving
37:23But he was charged with dangerous driving driving whilst disqualified and without insurance as well as failing to stop
37:30He was banned from driving for a further 24 months and was sentenced to 16 months behind bars
37:36Still to come
37:38This car I came in the borders the car did not came in a little place
37:42A heated debate but ian keeps his cool
37:44Stop shouting
37:46I'm
37:46We're having a conversation
37:47Yeah but that's
37:48You don't need to shout
37:49It's Wednesday afternoon
38:05I want to get him stopped before he turns off
38:09Interceptor ian bayliss is tailing a mercedes amg that's given his copper's nose a bit of a tweak
38:15Looks like it's going to tear off
38:20As the merc pulls into a residential street ian gets a closer look
38:24This car in front has a foreign number plate
38:30and under the dvla regulations that vehicle might be being used immediately
38:40So i'm just going to have a quick chat and see what the score is
38:45the mercs plates are albanian hello hello how are you doing yeah good thank you
38:51is this yours yes excellent have you got your driving license what have you kind of can i see your
38:57driving license of course
39:00Smashing you can only drive a foreign car in the uk if you're a visitor thanks very much always
39:08if you're a uk resident your motor must be registered with the dvla
39:12oh is this where you live yes you live that here yes okay
39:18his license says he lives right here in the uk
39:22need to have a chat with you about your car of course because
39:25if you're living here yes you can't drive your car in this country well i can drive for six months no you can't
39:34how can um when you're visiting the uk well yeah because i was back home let me finish if you ask me a
39:40question let me finish no problem when you're visiting the uk you have a you have six months yes okay
39:45but the moment you become a resident here yeah you don't get that six months i was back with my
39:52wife and kids back in albania we had no plane to come here i needed to bring the kids yeah yeah okay
39:56back at school how can i come you know okay then find a plane how you can how you can come here you
40:00know what i mean i'm not keeping the car here i just came to bring that's fine kids and go back
40:06the man is saying he only brought the car here to transport his family over
40:12and claims he plans on taking it back to albania asap ian's not buying it i want to get the car
40:19recovered yeah okay you can you can get the car back but you must apply to the dvla to either
40:27re-register it as a car for the uk or you have 24 hours to export it you cannot drive a foreign
40:32registered vehicle how can i be stopped before and nobody told me that just that's because you
40:37haven't been stopped by me ian's been on the force for two decades and in that time he's learned the
40:44traffic laws inside out and back to front in moments like this the man's unflappable i'm a traffic cop
40:52okay and i know the rules all right okay i'm telling you yeah you cannot drive that's not a problem
40:57you can get it yeah obviously you can get it back i'm not going to get the car back obviously i'm
41:01going to go to the borders why you left me to go right with this car here so well you can do that
41:05but but that's pointless because i don't care i'm not living here i am a resident here but i'm not
41:10living here i'm living abroad the bloke now claims he lives in albania fortunately it's a bit late to
41:17be changing your story can i have the keys no we don't have the keys you don't have the keys that's
41:21fine we don't need the keys the mercs key has mysteriously gone awol can you organize a surety
41:29recovery for a foreign vehicle please but it won't stop it being seized and the man is not happy
41:35somebody should warn me before if anything no no they shouldn't why you let me come in
41:40if i'm not allowed with the car this car i came in the borders the car did not came in aeroplane
41:44yeah but the borders that told me you're allowed to stay six months after six months this car has to
41:48go back stop shouting i'm we're having a conversation yeah but you don't need to shout you're not helping
41:53me out yeah i told you 24 hours the car will be out you people want to rip us off okay that's fine
41:58i pay the fine i come grab the car whatever i do is my car great that's fine yeah having failed to
42:04riley in one way the man decides to shift tactic what's your name ian bayliss what's your base number
42:10six two four perfect thank you what what's the point of this because you're going to go in social
42:15media for doing no rights no simple as i'll tell you i told you this car i drive here from the
42:21borders you ask me for license i give you license anything else you need for me no you do your job i
42:27do mine ian refuses to take the bait so the rules are you can come into the uk and drive a foreign
42:36vehicle in the uk um if you're visiting for up to six months however if you become a uk resident
42:41you you forfeit that right so it's part of the dvla tax regulations what we do is we remove the
42:49vehicle and then they'll have an option of either exporting the vehicle which they have to do within
42:5524 hours or re-registering it as a uk car and if they do that they can still drive on the foreign plate
43:03for a short period while the dvla are processing the the request the man's license and insurance
43:09details check out fine and it looks like he's finally willing to play ball do you want your
43:15license back please if you don't mind okay give me the keys why should i give you the keys that's
43:20all my right to do i want to keep the keys look i do i'm just kidding mate you do your work that's
43:26not a problem i give you the keys wherever you want i don't care it doesn't bother me surprise surprise
43:31he does have the keys after all i like the keys but i don't need it oh so no do you want it or not
43:36well if you want to give me the key i'll take it off you but i'm not having an argument about
43:41whether i should or not you do you want to i would like the keys yes thank you very much is this
43:47is this the right key that's the right oh yes well that's a relief we'll look after it for you
43:56it's nice and clean anyway
43:57it seems the affable ian's finally won the man over i get angry but you just keep being nice to
44:06them i just give up in the end some valuable advice for life there from a man of experience
44:15it's important that we deal with these people for traffic offenses if it was involved in a collision or
44:20something like that it could just disappear and we'd never be able to find it again he hasn't actually
44:24checked the rules and he was upset about that i always try and remain calm i don't come to work
44:31to have a fight only boxers do ian the man's car was seized he was reported for driving an untaxed
44:39vehicle the case is now in the hands of the dvla
