00:00This is Police Interceptors, and you're riding with the pride of Northamptonshire,
00:14Ace Pursuit drivers, with air support, and a crack dog unit.
00:28They bring down the bad guys, keep the streets safe, and battle 24-7 in the war on crime.
00:46Crash, crash.
00:48This is what it is, isn't it? We find them, we lock them up.
00:54The Interceptors battle road tax rage.
00:58Get on the floor.
01:00Get back! Get back!
01:03This is going to fail to stop.
01:05Service station thieves are caught in the act.
01:08There's parcels falling out of the back of the vehicle.
01:11And...
01:12There it is.
01:13The mystery of the vanishing van driver.
01:17He's parked it very interestingly.
01:19There were over 40,000 assaults on police officers in England and Wales last year.
01:40Situations the Interceptors face can change in a heartbeat.
01:44Dan and co-pilot Catalin from the neighbourhood policing team are on their way to a routine check on a motor.
01:53I received a call a few days ago that there's an untaxed vehicle parked on the road.
02:00If the vehicle's here that's untaxed, that'll be seized.
02:04Because I believe the tax hasn't been paid on it for over a year now.
02:10That's the vehicle there.
02:12One untaxed Nissan Navara exactly where they expect it to be.
02:22To try to find the owner, Catalin does some digging on the number plate.
02:27There's no insurance on it.
02:29MOT will aspire in 2024.
02:32And it has no tax since 2022.
02:35There's no insurance on it either?
02:36No.
02:37I mean, to be fair mate, it might have just been dumped here or something.
02:42Yeah.
02:43A solid theory.
02:44Until a woman says she's spoken to the owner of the pickup truck.
02:48Can he come here?
02:49Because I don't want to take his car away.
02:52Because he has no tax on it.
02:55He has traders.
02:56Yeah, you can't have traders, mate.
02:58You need to have a number on it for me to check that he's paying tax.
03:03Which I can't verify.
03:04He's paying tax.
03:06Yeah.
03:07Yeah.
03:08It's a clear-cut job.
03:09Without any proof of tax or traders insurance, the pickup truck can be seized.
03:14Hello.
03:15Can I arrange, please, vehicle recovery, no tax?
03:19However, the news isn't going down well with the residents.
03:24Standing in here like you're the man.
03:25No.
03:26You're a stick, mate.
03:27Absolutely smoking with your uniform off.
03:30I promise you I would.
03:32Or the untaxed motor's owner, who's just rolling up.
03:35Okay.
03:36You're taking what?
03:37You're taking what?
03:38You won't take nothing, mate.
03:39Okay.
03:40You won't take nothing, mate.
03:41I'm a trader, yeah?
03:42Okay.
03:43I promise you you won't take nothing, mate.
03:44Is that your car, is it?
03:45There's nothing you can do, mate.
03:46It doesn't look like a calm chat is on the cards, and the interceptors are outnumbered.
03:51Can we have another unit here, please?
03:53What do you mean?
03:54Can you have another unit?
03:55Get away from my vehicles, mate.
03:56I am a trader.
03:57There's nothing you can do.
03:58Yeah.
03:59Show me that.
04:00Mate, stay back.
04:01Stay back for me.
04:02Don't touch me, brother, mate.
04:03I promise you.
04:04Is this your vehicle?
04:05Listen, don't think you're a hero because you're not.
04:06Listen to me.
04:07Is this your vehicle?
04:08I am sick of you because you're tramped, mate.
04:09That's all you are.
04:10Okay.
04:11I think you can just take anything you want.
04:12Okay.
04:13You won't, mate.
04:14It's untaxed.
04:15It's been untaxed over a year.
04:16I've just bought it.
04:17I'm a trader.
04:18I get to drive with no tax for two weeks if I really want it.
04:20No.
04:21That's been...
04:22That's been...
04:23Mate, you don't know.
04:24I'm a trader.
04:25Okay.
04:26Yes, I know.
04:27I'll show you my trader's policy now.
04:28Get me this key for this thing now.
04:29Just calm down, buddy.
04:30Calm down, mate.
04:31Calm down.
04:32Move.
04:33Kill out my way.
04:34No, no.
04:35I'm not gonna move.
04:36There's nothing you can do.
04:37There's nothing you can do.
04:38I can do.
04:39You're not getting in there.
04:40Take this stupid thing off, mate.
04:41And I'll guarantee you couldn't do one thing.
04:42Okay.
04:43I promise you you couldn't.
04:44Because I promise you you wouldn't.
04:45Did you say you've got a...
04:46Take this...
04:47Yeah, sure.
04:48I'm gonna show you my policy.
04:49Don't you think you moron?
04:51Escalates.
04:52You think you're a hero because you've got this stupid thing on, brother.
04:55Take this off.
04:56I'll break your head.
04:57We don't think we're heroes.
04:58You couldn't, mate.
04:59I promise you.
05:00We're just doing our job.
05:01Mine.
05:02Mine.
05:03See?
05:04Mine.
05:05Now move.
05:06It's a standoff.
05:07Mate, I'm telling you you're not getting into that.
05:08I'm telling you.
05:09Catalin tries again to reason with the owner.
05:11Show me that you're a trader, okay?
05:14And you can prove to me that you can drive this without a tax.
05:17Yeah, okay.
05:18And I'm not taking it.
05:19I'll show you right in the second, mate.
05:20There you go.
05:21That's how much you...
05:22That's all we want to see.
05:23Yeah.
05:24Pass your phone.
05:25The owner phones his dad and asks him to bring proof of a trader's policy.
05:29Is he...
05:30Can he get the policy?
05:31Yeah.
05:32Okay.
05:33Well, if he can get the policy, we'll just wait.
05:35But the pause in hostility doesn't last long.
05:38Where are you from?
05:39My detail is this.
05:40The country you probably come from.
05:41I do not like racism.
05:42I guarantee if you turn back at your own country in that uniform, they'd probably be edger.
05:46Okay.
05:47That's probably what they would do to you.
05:48A simple seizure of an untaxed motor is taking a sinister turn.
05:52If you want to...
05:53Please, can you just get this paperwork?
05:54This fat knob's pissing me off.
05:56Fortunately, the cavalry are arriving.
05:59Yeah?
06:00Let me find out what's going on.
06:01You're saying chill, but it's...
06:02Don't do that.
06:03Come on, don't do that.
06:04Along with a recovery truck ready to lift the untaxed Navara.
06:09Literally two minutes and then I'll let you know.
06:13However, they are closely followed by another truck driver...
06:21...who's seen red.
06:23What's the need for that?
06:27What?
06:28What's the need for that?
06:29What?
06:30What's the need for that?
06:31Blocking the road.
06:32I know, because we're dealing with an incident here.
06:33So am I.
06:34In here.
06:41The raging driver is pushing ahead.
06:45Forcing recovery further down the road.
06:48Right, you chill out, because otherwise you'll get yourself locked up for public order.
06:53Move.
06:54You move.
06:55And stop swearing.
06:57Go on, go.
07:00Oh, my days.
07:03You're lucky.
07:04You need to go somewhere.
07:05Go.
07:07Sounds familiar, because he's the untaxed motor owner's father.
07:14And he's about to kick off.
07:16You're taking what?
07:17You're taking what?
07:18You're taking nothing, mate.
07:19In Northampton, Dan and Catalin's simple inquiry into an untaxed Nissan Navara is going from 0 to 100.
07:37I'm going to show you my policy.
07:38Don't you think you moron?
07:39I promise you.
07:40We're just doing our job.
07:41First, the owner turned up making threats.
07:44Take this off, I'll break your head.
07:50And now his dad has arrived.
07:53And he's even more volatile.
07:56Get pictures in.
07:57Can you move the car?
07:58Can you get out of the way, please?
07:59Yeah, no, don't even get my car.
08:02No, no, no, don't even.
08:03Let's get out of the way.
08:04Let's move out of the way.
08:05Get out of the way.
08:06Get out of the way.
08:07Get pictures in.
08:08Get pictures in.
08:09Get pictures in.
08:10It's not good.
08:11Buddy, can you get out of the way for us, please?
08:13Get out of the way.
08:14You don't want to get yourself hurt.
08:15An officer tries to defuse the situation.
08:18Get out.
08:19But the families hit boiling point.
08:21Dad!
08:22Dad!
08:23Dad!
08:24Dad, leave it!
08:25Dad, leave it!
08:26The whole team rush to assist and Katalin is forced to pull the parva spray.
08:30Get on the floor.
08:35Get on the floor.
08:40Even with a full face of parva, Dad is still resisting.
08:43Let me just pull it out.
08:44Let me just pull it out.
08:45Let me just pull it out.
08:46Stay away.
08:47Let me just pull it out, man.
08:48It's my dad.
08:49It's my dad.
08:50It's my dad.
08:51Stop.
08:52Stop.
08:53More people are gathering.
08:54Don't put one hands here now.
08:56Don't.
08:57Straight away, it didn't do nothing.
08:59And the aggressive son isn't backing down.
09:02Move away.
09:03Dad!
09:04Dad!
09:05Taser!
09:06The Sarge draws his taser.
09:08Get back!
09:10Stay back!
09:11Stay back!
09:12Stay back!
09:13Stay back!
09:14The prospect of 50,000 volts does the job.
09:19Whilst getting the dad in cuffs, the son flees in his golf.
09:29Yeah, you made off.
09:30You made off.
09:31Driven off.
09:32Driven off.
09:33Driven off.
09:34Take yourself out and fit your high shirt.
09:36No, no, no, no, no.
09:37We're gonna lift.
09:38Truck's gone.
09:39Truck's gone.
09:40During the altercation, someone's also driven off in the untaxed Navara.
09:44You good?
09:45Yeah, I think I've got parved a little bit, but…
09:48It's my mate.
09:49It's my mate.
09:50It's my mate.
09:51I took home and down.
09:52He was holding, his dad was going for me.
09:54Yeah?
09:55and then he's gone, so he hasn't actually, like, touched me.
10:00The simple seizure of an untaxed motor has escalated
10:04to cops on the lookout for one man, as well as both of his cars.
10:10And his parvered father being nicked for public order.
10:15Yeah, there's times like this
10:17that you realise how much you can rely on your colleagues
10:22to come and assist.
10:25The team wastes no time in getting back on the road
10:27to find the sun on the run.
10:29Sometimes, you know, you can meet someone who's really angry,
10:33but if you talk to them in the right way,
10:34some people respond better to that.
10:36You know, that works most of the time, luckily,
10:38but it's the people who can't de-escalate,
10:40and we may need to resort to using PPE,
10:43like Catelyn did today with the parvered spray.
10:47Sometimes we have to, you know, use force,
10:49which is portion to be able to get a situation under control
10:51to make sure that we don't get injured
10:54and the members of the public don't get injured either.
10:58Within the hour, there's some search success.
11:02They found the golf.
11:06Another unit finds the sun's white golf unattended
11:09and they seize it.
11:10If he wants to get his car back,
11:12he's going to need to present himself to get that.
11:14So, at some point, he's going to...
11:17His luck's going to run out, unfortunately,
11:19and he'll have to answer what he's thought he's done.
11:23Interceptors also picked up the untaxed Navarra that afternoon.
11:33The owner's luck ran out when he was arrested the following day.
11:36He pleaded not guilty to assaulting and obstructing the police,
11:40but guilty to using threatening words and behaviour.
11:43He was ordered to pay £141 in fines.
11:47After some time in the cells,
11:49no further action was taken against the father for public order.
12:04Some of the country's main arterial routes,
12:07such as the M1 and the A14,
12:09run through Northamptonshire.
12:10And these roads are often hit hard by travelling crime gangs
12:15committing curtain-side thefts from lorries.
12:19What you'll tend to get is a spotter vehicle,
12:22which will go into the service areas,
12:24cut the curtain fabric of the lorries,
12:27and then if it's worth taking,
12:28they'll normally call forward a carrier vehicle
12:32and the team will then go about
12:35emptying the contact from the back of the curtain side
12:38into their vehicle.
12:41It can be quite a difficult crime to detect
12:43because a lot of times the lorry drivers are asleep,
12:47so don't hear it.
12:48It's a big problem,
12:49but I think we do quite a good job at trying to prevent it
12:54and also pursue it as well.
13:01To crack down on the country's £66 million cargo crime problem,
13:06there's a national police operation up Barrack.
13:12Tonight, dog handler Lucy and canine crime fighter Bryn
13:16are on Barrack duty,
13:18looking to catch the thieves red-handed.
13:20We'll just be checking service stations,
13:27lorry lay-bys, lorry parks,
13:30anywhere really where suspects could park up
13:34and try and steal loads from the back of HGVs.
13:39It's just a little bit of luck
13:41and a little bit of looking in the right place.
13:44The right place tonight is a service station off the A14.
13:48Lucy spots a van parked up next to a lorry.
13:58And the driver isn't sticking around.
14:04A vehicle check, please.
14:07Loaded with loot, tail lifts still down.
14:09I think we've just come across a barrack in progress.
14:14This is going to fail to stop.
14:16Lucy has caught curtain-side thieves in the act.
14:20We're now A605 north.
14:23It is failing to stop.
14:25It's a hasty getaway with a van load of stolen goods.
14:29If the driver can keep hold of them.
14:31There's parcels falling out of the back of the vehicle.
14:42We're now into Thrapston.
14:44I think there were some other people in the hedge line.
14:47There was torches flashing in the hedge line.
14:50It's likely the crime gang had to spot a car as well as this van.
14:53Unluckily for the van driver, it's him Lucy got a glimpse of.
15:00From what I could see of the driver, it was a fairly well-built male wearing a light-coloured grey jumper.
15:08Still into Thrapston Village, speed 2.7, low risk.
15:11As pursuits go, it's strangely slow and steady.
15:16He was panicking, didn't he? He didn't know what to do.
15:18Perhaps the thieves don't want to risk losing any more loot.
15:24Left, left. Speed 2.3.
15:28Or perhaps they're looking for somewhere to bail out.
15:34As the passenger side opens, one is out and running.
15:41It's touch and go.
15:43He's still going, isn't he?
15:44I've had one bail out on the foot. Stand by.
15:48But the van comes to a stop.
15:52Running now would not be a wise move.
15:56Stay there.
15:59There's another suspect also in the passenger seat.
16:03I've got one detained, one's run off.
16:06I need officers to me.
16:08Put your handbrake on, mate. Put the handbrake on.
16:09Put the handbrake on.
16:11Right, we'll put it in gear then.
16:14No, it's not. It's rolling, mate.
16:18Too late.
16:20It's rolled backwards into my car.
16:23But a prank to the Skoda is a small price to pay for bagging a suspected thief.
16:28This male is compliant.
16:29He was the driver, for certain, although he's now sitting in the passenger seat.
16:34Bryn Spark may have stopped one suspect from running.
16:37Just so we've covered the legal side, at the minute, you're under arrest for failing to stop, all right?
16:43But with another unit on scene to deal with the driver...
16:46Bryn and Lucy turn their attention to looking for his accomplice.
16:52Hold on a minute.
16:53Dream team, Lucy, and five-year-old German shepherd Bryn once tracked three armed robbers who'd taken a car at gunpoint.
17:07Yes, yes, I've got, like, an office block to my left.
17:10We're tracking up towards a car park.
17:11And this evening, Bryn's finely-tuned sense of smell...
17:15One-seven, where I am, the dog's indicating over the fence to some back gardens.
17:21..is catching a whiff of curtain-sight thief.
17:24It's definitely gone this way, but it's a spiked fence.
17:29Finding a way into the garden on the other side...
17:32Where is he then?
17:35Bryn is drawn to a shed, which has been left wide open.
17:38He's been in there, haven't he?
17:44Hands locked.
17:46I think he's gone back, cos he was all in that garden.
17:48It looks like the thief could be on the move.
17:57Taking a left down another alleyway.
18:00Tracking quite strongly now.
18:03The canine cop has a solid lead.
18:05So we're tracking down the hill.
18:09Until, all of a sudden, the track goes cold.
18:17This is a pick-up point.
18:19100%.
18:20Tried him in all four directions, and he's just nothing.
18:24He came flying down here as well.
18:27Despite Bryn's best efforts, Lucy suspects the runner
18:30has been picked up by other gang members in the spotter car.
18:34He's worked his nuts off, bless him, he's done really well.
18:36Good lad.
18:38Hey, boy.
18:39Good boy.
18:40Yes, he is.
18:42He's a good lad.
18:44What's the best way back from here?
18:45Back at the scene, cops have discovered the getaway van is a stolen vehicle on false plates.
18:52And the bloke Lucy arrested is a disqualified driver.
18:55Clearly, he was pretending he wasn't the driver, because he was sat in the passenger seat when we got round to him.
19:01Which is an age-old trick.
19:03But unfortunately for him, I saw him in the driver's seat.
19:06So, unlucky.
19:09To come across a crime in progress like that is quite rare.
19:15And to obviously get the driver of the stolen vehicle arrested is a brilliant result.
19:19Really, really pleased.
19:21Good boy.
19:22Good boy.
19:23Come on then, in.
19:25Good lad.
19:25Next stop, the services, to continue the investigation.
19:36Not before a little carriageway clear-up.
19:40This is one of the boxes that came out of that van.
19:45Can't tell what it is, but we'll take it back to the lorry.
19:47We can have that back.
19:53At the service station, it looks like more boxes were destined to be stolen, had Lucy not intercepted.
19:59So, this will be where they've cut the side to have a look at what's inside.
20:05And then they've evidently tried to pull some of the bits out of here to see what the property is.
20:13It looks like...
20:17It's electronic equipment of some description.
20:21Soundbar, subwoofers, it's going to be relatively expensive electronic equipment, I would say.
20:27And given that that Luton van was half full of these boxes,
20:32I would say we've probably prevented quite a high-value theft from taking place.
20:38So, yeah, good.
20:42High value indeed.
20:43Lucy recovered around £3,500 worth of stolen goods.
20:47The man in the van is awaiting trial for stealing from the lorry, driving whilst banned and without insurance.
20:58No legal action was taken against him in relation to the damage to Lucy's car or the nicked van.
21:04Coming up...
21:11I've got a town centre C3, I see a vehicle swerve in.
21:16The interceptors go looking for a drink driving suspect.
21:19What was that about?
21:21I was moving out of the way, traffic.
21:23And the banned crash suspect goes looking for the interceptors.
21:26Go on, mate. This is my vehicle. I just had to go and get my insurance details from my friend's house.
21:31Oh, interesting.
21:32Northamptonshire is home to nearly three-quarters of a million people.
21:50Many will take to the roads during rush hour and could face increased dangers.
21:54The main issues with driving during rush hour is just the volume of traffic and the fact that people tend to be quite impatient.
22:06If a car loses control where there's a lot of pedestrians around, for instance, like children walking home from school,
22:13it can be catastrophic really for them because cars are effectively one-ton killing machines.
22:34It's the Friday morning rush hour and interceptor Callum Donoghue is blue-lighting through traffic to the scene of a crash.
22:42A van has apparently collided with a pole and the driver's fled from the scene.
22:48We're going to really need to try and identify where the driver's gone and work out the reason why they've fled from the scene.
22:56Callum has an early prediction on the reason for the driver's disappearing act.
23:01I would normally be suspecting drink or drugs, so we'll see what we can find when we get there.
23:06At 8.15 in the morning, Northampton streets are busy with commuters and families on the school run.
23:15There it is.
23:16This crash and dash has caused serious damage, but it could have been lethal.
23:29Bury Papa 6-1.
23:31I'll pass you the wedge for this van.
23:32After ploughing into a pedestrian crossing, the abandoned van is wedged on the top of the railings and blocking one lane of traffic.
23:41A lady out there said he's done a red light.
23:51Yeah.
23:51Laurie's flipped him and he's made off.
23:53Oh, interesting.
23:54Where's the lady?
23:56Whilst the fire crew fight any further danger by disconnecting the wrecked van's battery,
24:01Callum speaks to the eyewitness.
24:03It's a stupid move.
24:33Thankfully, no one seems to have been injured.
24:36It's pretty stable, so if you're happy, they'll leave you too.
24:40Absolutely, mate, that's fine.
24:42Now the scene is safe, Callum can focus on solving the mystery of the vanishing van driver.
24:49We'll wait for the vehicle to get recovered, and then we'll go round to the address where it's registered to
24:53and see if we can speak to the driver or the owner.
24:55See if he's using drugs or any alcohol, see what his explanation is for this, because he's parked it very interestingly.
25:06Even more interestingly, the runaway driver has left their motor unlocked and full of expensive power tools.
25:13There'll be a bigger reason behind it, and it's annoying me because I'm yet to find out why,
25:18but leave it with us.
25:20We'll get an answer by the end of the day.
25:22An answer might present itself sooner than Callum is expecting.
25:26All right, mate, this is my vehicle.
25:28I just had to go and get my insurance details from my friend's house.
25:30Oh, interesting.
25:31Sorry.
25:31The van driver has come back.
25:34What happened?
25:34Basically, the light's changed, and the lorry come round here, and I've had to swear to Mr. Lorry,
25:39and I ended up going up the...
25:40Basically, so I didn't hit anything, I thought I hit the central reservation.
25:43Oh.
25:43How fast were you going?
25:45I only got 30.
25:48What, 30 from there?
25:49That takes a bit of force, doesn't it?
25:51Huh?
25:51That takes a bit of force to get it up there.
25:53Oh, I was...
25:54Yeah, I was doing 30, mate.
25:56Have you got your licence on you?
25:57Yes.
26:00Callum is an advanced driver.
26:02Who is trained to handle anything from a high-performance pursuit car to a riot van or a 4x4 response car.
26:10Could you have been involved in a collision?
26:12I'll have to put you on a breath test and a drug test as well, just to make sure that's all fine.
26:15No worries.
26:16Is this van crash just a simple accident, or are Callum's suspicions about drink or drugs correct?
26:23Just make a seal around it with your lips, and one long continuous blow until I tell you to stop, okay?
26:27Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
26:29Stop.
26:29That's the time at the same time as you.
26:33Zero.
26:34One test's passed, one to go.
26:37So, not as I first assumed.
26:40We'll still wait on the results of the drug wipe.
26:42He's very nervous, but he came back, and I'd argue if there was something more to hide, he probably wouldn't have come back.
26:49Another unit are en route with the drug wipe kit.
26:54In the meantime, Callum and a recovery worker are coming up with a plan to get the van off the rush hour roads.
27:01Let this lot go through.
27:03Do you need this one closing as well?
27:05No, leave that one open.
27:06So, just this bit?
27:07Yeah.
27:08He's somehow going to go over there and lift it onto the back of his truck.
27:11So, we've got to close the whole road, which will be interesting, because everyone wants to try and squeeze past this morning.
27:15All righty, all I've got to do is set the crane up, put the crane above it, pick it, and we're awake.
27:21Cool.
27:22At the next red light, the recovery truck moves in.
27:27Callum closes the second lane.
27:30You can't get that way, because the van in the way can't get that way, because the truck will be in the way.
27:33Cheers, mate.
27:34And Operation Van Lift begins.
27:41Weighing in at over a tonne, the van is wrenched from the railings.
27:51I bet he's great at the grabber machines and the arcade.
27:58Job done.
27:59With a clearer view, Callum notices a problem with one of the tyres.
28:06There's one here.
28:07You've got enough tread on them, haven't they?
28:08That's got cords showing.
28:09Oh, shit.
28:12Bald tyres can increase stopping distances, but so can drug driving.
28:21Having got the rush hour traffic moving again, another officer has arrived with a drug wipe test.
28:26Chief, just get some saliva on the end of the tunnel for me.
28:28Do you take drugs at all?
28:30No.
28:30No.
28:30And then just three.
28:32Okay.
28:33Perfect.
28:33So it takes eight minutes to fully work.
28:36All right, it's going to give us a reading of cannabis or cocaine.
28:40Well, hopefully, nothing.
28:41Now we play the waiting game.
28:44One in 20 fatalities on our roads are caused by drug drivers.
28:50Within minutes, it looks like Callum's suspicions could be correct.
28:54You see on the bottom one?
28:56Yeah.
28:56There's a second line under there.
28:59Right, okay.
28:59So that shows that it's testing positive for cocaine.
29:02Shouldn't be.
29:03Well, that's what the machine says.
29:05So at this moment in time, you're under arrest, okay?
29:07I'm suspicious of drug drive.
29:09You don't have to say anything, but it may harm you defence if you don't mention one question.
29:11Something you should let Ryan in court.
29:12Anything you do say may be given evidence.
29:13Having failed the roadside drug test, the van driver is taken to custody to give a blood sample for forensic testing.
29:23Obviously, it's a Friday morning.
29:24There's lots of pedestrian traffic about, as we saw.
29:27Kids going to school, et cetera.
29:29It was on quite a main road in Northampton.
29:31And for him to make that sort of manoeuvre, to be wedged into the fence, he was doing a bit of speed.
29:38Just lucky no one was stood in the middle of the crossing when that collision did happen.
29:45Blood test results confirmed the van driver was over the limit for cocaine.
29:49He pleaded guilty to drug driving, was banned from the roads for 17 months.
29:54When it comes to collisions involving drink drivers, the number of fatalities are at their highest level for more than a decade.
30:10Setting his sights on taking those over the limit off the road is Harrison Beverley.
30:15So we're on a Sunday night shift.
30:18We've got the England match on tonight, the first match of the Euros against Serbia.
30:22So I expect it could be a bit busier than normal for a Sunday night.
30:27Potentially on the roads, looking at people that have been watching the match.
30:29A few drinks, potentially.
30:31So we'll keep an eye out for that.
30:35Football fan Harrison supports Middlesbrough FC.
30:39As the night draws in, he's pleased to learn that England have scored a win.
30:44However...
30:46Lord, I'm just off at Junction 10 now.
30:48Are you still Barton Road out of town?
30:51Yes, mate.
30:53Interceptor's V suspected drink driver is about to begin.
30:57We've got a town centre C3.
30:59I see a vehicle swerve in.
31:01Nearly hit another vehicle, I think.
31:04So I'm going to go and get my leg up with getting the vehicle stopped.
31:08Fellow Interceptor Lloyd is already behind the erratic driver.
31:13So Harrison is plotting up, ready to join us back up.
31:16Yeah, it's got four or five occupants, I think he said.
31:20So it's, um...
31:20Don't we want to try and get stopped?
31:22And obviously, I've just been seen driving that bad on camera.
31:24Just double-checking out of the drink or anything.
31:26You know, it's an England match tonight.
31:27You'd hope that people are sensible.
31:28But...
31:29should be coming past us in a second.
31:41Harrison falls in directly behind the suspect.
31:44Enough of you've complied and stopped at Junction 10, Lloyd, you reckon?
31:48Yeah, I'm...
31:49Four passengers in a car with a suspected drink driver could be a recipe for disaster.
31:57See if it stopped here, it's a bit of a safe bit of a road for us.
32:03Without delay, they're lighting him up.
32:13Either he's failing to stop or something might be slowing the driver's reactions.
32:18Yeah, let's see if he's going to fail to stop.
32:20It's part of the road, catch him back into town.
32:23It's a recent amount of...
32:24Just as Lloyd calls it in, the suspect comes to a stop.
32:30Stand by. Stop, stop.
32:34Get out of the car.
32:34All right, lad.
32:39What was that all about?
32:40I was moving out of the way of traffic.
32:41You weren't?
32:42Give me time.
32:42I was.
32:43No, leave me time. Come out of the road, lad.
32:44Vehicle stopped. No damage.
32:46You've got the keys. It's five off at the minute.
32:50Lloyd gets straight to the point.
32:52The reason we're stopping you, mate, is...
32:53We might just be driving quite bad in the town centre.
32:56I don't suspect you're not.
32:58I'm going to charge a car.
32:59Any alcohol you can see here?
33:01I had a couple of bites while we were watching the road, so that was it.
33:03When was your last drink?
33:06It was 25 last midnight now.
33:09Good hour ago.
33:10You had to try to stress me off the roadside.
33:12Might as well, mate.
33:13Yeah.
33:13Refusing the breathalyzer is an offence in itself.
33:18If this footy fan's got nothing to hide, it's in his interest to play ball.
33:23Okay, nice step.
33:23I'll hold onto the device.
33:25Nice.
33:25Just take a big, deep breath and blow until I tell you to stop, please.
33:30Blow.
33:30You're not blowing.
33:31Okay.
33:32Yeah.
33:32Stop messing around.
33:34Okay?
33:35Yeah, ma'am.
33:35Yeah, imagine you blowing a balloon, okay?
33:37Yeah, ma'am.
33:37You can't trick the machine, mate.
33:39All right?
33:39If you're not blowing, if you don't blow hard enough again, then it's what's called failing
33:42to provide, we should be arrested for.
33:44All right?
33:44Do you understand?
33:45Yeah.
33:45Lovely.
33:46Big, deep breath.
33:47Blow out until I tell you to stop.
33:50Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
33:52Lovely, thank you.
33:54I'll do that and analyse the sample of the breath that you've given us.
33:56Hold on.
33:57You'll be all right and see what it takes.
33:57Legal limit at the roadside is 35.
34:04Yes, a fail at 72.
34:05This moment on time, you're under arrest.
34:06Drive more service, provide more alcohol.
34:08I'm standing.
34:09Don't be defensive, you're going to try and question some questions on the court.
34:11Let them do something to give evidence.
34:12All right?
34:13Put your hands out.
34:13All right?
34:14All right.
34:15I'll have a great time for my vote.
34:15No.
34:16He's going to be sent off to custody.
34:19Should have drive like an idiot, mate.
34:22And his mate will be taking the safer option of a stroll home.
34:25After a word from Harrison.
34:28I would say filming and laughing at your mate who's now with us is pretty stupid.
34:32Yeah?
34:33So, please step out the car.
34:39Good job.
34:39You don't want people like this driving, especially with passengers in the vehicle.
34:42You know, he's double the drink drive limit.
34:45Potentially prevented a serious accident.
34:48Drink drivers kill people.
34:50I've got no sympathy.
34:52What time am I going to be out tomorrow?
34:53Good night.
34:55You've got work?
34:57I don't know.
34:57What time are you going to work?
34:59I'm going to be getting pissed for half five.
35:01Yeah, you won't be going to work at half five, mate.
35:04And there's one more bit of bad news for the driver.
35:07Probably, he's failed to stop initially.
35:10We're going to get a second Section 59 warning, mate, which means we're going to seize your car.
35:15Section 59 warnings are issued for anti-social driving.
35:18Thanks to his earlier dodgy driving, he's totted up two Section 59s within 12 months, and his motor is shown the red card.
35:28I think he's going to have some regrets when he wakes up later today.
35:30After failing the breath test at custody, he was convicted of drink driving and disqualified for 18 months.
35:41He also had to pay £859 in costs and a fine.
35:45You see all sorts as an interceptor.
36:00And another set of wheels bombing along the pavement is raising eyebrows for Ian Bayliss.
36:09Stop there, mate.
36:11You can't ride that on the road.
36:12That's it.
36:13You see, it doesn't matter.
36:16Look, pull up and then we'll have a chat.
36:17Can anyone take it here?
36:19Well, I don't know yet.
36:20He's telling me to spot it.
36:21Okay, well, pull up and let's have a look.
36:27That ride could land this bloke in hot water.
36:30He claims he's just picked up the electric quad bike for his son.
36:34You can't ride that on the road.
36:35I thought it was just like, it's like a mobility scooter.
36:38Yeah, it's not, it's a motorcycle.
36:41That's what it's classed.
36:41So, technically, you need insurance, a driving licence and everything.
36:46And have you got any of that?
36:48I have, yeah.
36:48You've got it all?
36:49I've got a driver licence.
36:51You've got insurance?
36:53See, that's where I have to take it now.
36:55Look at my place.
36:56He's literally just got it.
36:57Where do you live?
36:57I live, I'll push it back now.
36:59I'll literally push it back.
37:00That cannot be on the road?
37:02I'll push it back.
37:03Okay.
37:04I'll take it out, I'll put it in pocket and I'll push it back.
37:07Potentially, Ian could seize the mini motor.
37:09It's classed as a mechanically propelled vehicle, which is a, it's effectively a motorcycle.
37:16Yeah.
37:17Same as a quad.
37:18Doesn't matter if it's electric.
37:20Electric.
37:21I don't think they've got it.
37:22No.
37:22But he decides the best road to take here is some words of advice.
37:26If he wants to ride it, you have to take it somewhere, private land.
37:31You can't just blast down, especially pavements as well.
37:35And the good old section 59 warning comes in handy again.
37:38If this is seen on the road again, okay, I'll put a thing in with your name on it.
37:44It applies to you and the bike.
37:46And then we take it, yeah.
37:49Sorted.
37:50Right.
37:52Walk it.
37:53Yeah.
37:54All good.
37:54Thank you very much.
37:56He can stay on it, but you're walking and you're not riding it.
37:59No.
38:00Cheers.
38:01Good luck.
38:02Anyone else have took that?
38:04Cheers, mate.
38:04Damn right.
38:05Yeah, see you later.
38:06Two happy customers walk their new main machine home.
38:16Still to come.
38:17Hello there.
38:18Oh, you're still all right enough.
38:21A rescue mission on the A14.
38:23You got it.
38:24You're on.
38:25And Griff gets a couple of new crewmates.
38:36As we've already seen, the interceptors don't always get a warm reception.
38:52But managing suspects is only part of their day-to-day duties.
38:56A vast chunk of our time isn't dealt with chasing criminals down.
39:01It's dealt with helping people.
39:03And undoubtedly, that's what drives most cops to get out of bed in the morning.
39:07It's the roots of policing.
39:09It's all about community.
39:10It's about serving the communities in which we live.
39:13To try and make people's days a little bit better and to make those communities safer places.
39:25In the west of the county, worrying reports are coming in about a breakdown on the A14.
39:30This afternoon, Chris is joined by fellow interceptor Aaron Griff Griffiths, who's putting his foot down.
39:47Just like the occupants were out of the vehicle, but stood in the live lane.
39:50So you've got traffic travelling at 70 miles an hour.
39:55Maybe some higher speeds.
39:58So, see, that's a concern that is as reported.
40:02The call is being treated as a Grade 1 emergency.
40:06Look at his tailback.
40:08To reach the stranded couple, the interceptors are up against building traffic.
40:14Just on a Grade 1.
40:15Call you back.
40:18Griff received a police commendation for saving the life of someone involved in a crash.
40:23He's armed with advanced driving skills.
40:28Which are coming in handy today.
40:31Fair play, fair play.
40:32Thank you very much.
40:34Another unit are first for the scene.
40:36Griff and Chris aren't far behind.
40:40You've got them on, mate.
40:41And rears.
40:42And rears.
40:43And we've arrived.
40:45Fellow interceptor James fills them in.
40:47The lady, bless her, is ever so emotional because she's got scared.
40:51A bit of all the law is beeping up.
40:53So I've reassured them.
40:54Told them what we're going to do is tow them off.
40:56But the towing eye is not missing.
40:57So we're going to have to do a bit of a thing on the axle.
40:59We'll do underneath.
41:00If you stay where you are, JC goes in front.
41:04While Griff and James move their marked cars into a position to shield and tow the broken-down Renault,
41:10Chris comforts the shaken driver.
41:13Hello there.
41:13Oh, it'll be all right, my love.
41:16Hello.
41:18Hello.
41:20The couple were on their way to Wales on holiday when disaster struck for driver Sue.
41:25It's just come up with a red light.
41:27See, an engine failure.
41:29And it's still a palm.
41:31That's it.
41:32Nothing else.
41:33No sound.
41:34Nothing.
41:35It's never happened to me.
41:36Not in 40-odd years.
41:38Just come across back this way for me, sir.
41:44How old am I?
41:45How old am I?
41:47How old am I?
41:5093.
41:52The interceptors need to move fast to tow the elderly couple to safety.
41:56Where do you think of, where are you thinking of putting it?
41:58A missing towing eye puts a spanner in the works, but Chris is on the case.
42:08Although I think Rocky might have said, might have sussed out somewhere for it to go.
42:13You've, you got it?
42:15You're on.
42:16Good to go.
42:17James and the gent will be out front on towing duty.
42:24Chris will ride in the Renault.
42:27Whilst Griff...
42:28Sometimes these things happen.
42:31I'm not, but they're flipping A14 of all.
42:36..is crewing up with Sue and her canine companion.
42:40Good when you are, Josie.
42:41And we're off.
42:43If it ever happens in the future, first thing you must do is call the police.
42:47Between 40 and 70 miles an hour.
42:49If you break down a road like that, and you can't get the car out of the road,
42:52get out of the car and call us straight away.
42:54Right, I will.
42:55Yeah, because we'll come out and even if we have to just shut the road,
42:58keep you safe, shut the lane, then we'll do that.
43:02The team towed the Renault off the A14 and onto a side road.
43:07Where the couple can safely wait for their recovery.
43:11Just in case...
43:12I'll give him a phone number, just in case you do need me as a teammate.
43:15If I tell him he's been replaced, he won't be happy.
43:19Is that your partner?
43:20No, no, the one underneath your car.
43:22Oh, he's underneath my car.
43:23Chris's improvised towline worked a treat.
43:27Despite her initial distress, after a good natter,
43:30it seems Sue is feeling much better.
43:33I don't know which one I like the best, Ian.
43:37Isn't he lovely?
43:38Will you take a picture of us?
43:40Oh, yeah, I will, yeah.
43:40Will you crack this one, please?
43:41Ah, yes!
43:43Shows all of his lovely features.
43:45What one's that?
43:46I think I've just cracked the lens.
43:49Your turn, lads.
43:51Never had this many photos.
