AccuWeather's Tony Laubach reported live from Dallas, Texas, as sleet and light snow fell during the overnight hours.
Transcript
00:00From Dallas, Tony, you've already had some sleep falling throughout the morning.
00:03It's been relatively light, but as you talked about earlier,
00:06this is going to be a long-duration problem, first with the ice and then the cold.
00:13Yeah, this is not going to be the most joyous time for folks here in Dallas,
00:18and that is not counting their football season by any stretch, wink, wink.
00:21But we are definitely in the grips of this winter storm here,
00:24and the early processes of it yesterday, it was a drizzle and a rain for most of the day.
00:30Then overnight, we saw that freezing line work its way into the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex,
00:35and we started to see that changeover, mostly to sleet.
00:39If you want to say there's good news with that, that beats freezing rain out any day of the week.
00:43We're seeing a mix of sleet and light snow falling right now.
00:47You might be able to see a little bit of that pellets bouncing off my arm here on the jacket,
00:51and occasionally we're getting a little bit of a breeze, nothing too crazy in terms of the wind,
00:55but just enough to remind you that it is uncharacteristically and uncomfortably cold here in North Dallas.
01:02We'll show you some of the video from overnight as that sleet really started to get down in this area here,
01:06kind of coating a lot of the cars in the parking lot.
01:09Again, we saw brief periods of freezing rain mix in, but certainly not enough to really get too big of a concern.
01:16Slick in some spots, yes, but more than anything, just an inconvenience.
01:20Most people getting up here this morning at our hotel are spending a few minutes having to scrape off their cars
01:26to get some of that sleet and ice off.
01:28Generally speaking, though, the ground just kind of sleek covered with some slick spots,
01:34particularly in areas that are untreated.
01:37Roads, fortunately this time of morning aren't terribly active.
01:40We're going to get out on those roads here over the next hour or so
01:42to really get a firm idea of what the conditions are like driving around,
01:46but that's something we are strongly suggesting you don't do if you don't have to do that.
01:50Folks, yesterday really taking heed of that.
01:52As you can imagine, Dallas, notorious for its traffic on a Friday evening.
01:56Did not see a lot of vehicles on the road.
01:58Certainly much, much lighter volume of traffic yesterday during the rush hour
02:02than we would see on a typical Friday here at DFW.
02:05That due in part to a large number of businesses closing.
02:08As Bernie talked about earlier, DFW canceling a lot of flights preemptively ahead of this storm.
02:14So we've seen a lot of that. That will go on today into tomorrow.
02:18So check with your flights heading out of Dallas-Fort Worth, Dallas Love Airport.
02:22Call in ahead and make sure that your flight is still on.
02:25Anybody trying to get in and out of here, likely not going to have much luck with that right now.
02:29We're seeing, again, that sleet mixed with light snow.
02:32For you record nerds, if you're really wondering here,
02:36Fort Worth Airport recorded light snow at about 5.07 here.
02:39We're about two miles north of the airport here where we are right now.
02:42That keeps the streak alive for measuring at least a trace of snow every single year here in Dallas.
02:49Probably not something you would associate with Dallas,
02:51but that record is safe thanks to the light snow that's falling.
02:55See, we've got the sleet coming down now.
02:57We're expecting on and off heavy precipitation through the morning,
03:00maybe a lull this afternoon, and then we'll get the second round,
03:02which might have a little bit more snow with it as we head into the day tomorrow, guys.
